I have a similar scenario. The app works on tablets and on the Asus Flip

I'm wondering about posting a question in the chromebook developer forum ...

[android-developers] Re: Android App Developers - 15 minute phone survey $50 Amazon Gift Card

2016-02-11 Thread keycodegreen
Hi all,

I am one of the guys doing the phone surveys... we're still looking for
more people to participate, so that we can gather your thoughts and
feedback about a product aimed at people who develop and sell Android
Applications.

If you're interested and think you might be able to provide a little
reaction to what we might have, we're really interested in hearing from
you. We're that interested that we're simply giving a $50 Amazon Gift Card
to anyone who's kind enough to help by having a 10-15 minute chat! ...if
you're a developer or seller, whether a one man development outfit or part
of big company, your opinions are exactly what we'd like to know.

If you follow the survey (which is really really quick), and put your
details in at the end, then I will contact you at the email address you
provide and arrange a call at a time that suits you. Here's the link again,
and a big thanks in advance to anyone who can take some moments to help
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CR66ZPH

[android-developers] Re: Android app naming with brand name in it

2014-10-28 Thread JackN
If you use their mark fairly (as in fair use (e.g. education, critiques),
They don't get to dictate guidelines to you.

Of course, if you end up in court, (or they dmca you), it may be more
costly to prove your fair use than its worth.

On Sunday, October 26, 2014 5:31:14 PM UTC-7, Arshad Fendi wrote:

  Hello every one,

 As the name says it, I have a series of audio books on android and one of
 the books I made was an audio book talking about Apple iPhone, the name I
 want it to be is Audio book: Apple iPhone.

 I want to know if this is safe or not as I couldn't find anything too
 clear out there on the internet.

 According to android brand guidelines:
 http://developer.android.com/distribute/tools/promote/brand.html
 They talk about that android should not be main name of the app and it
 should not have the focus on the app icon, I assume these rules applies to
 most if not all other brands.

 According to Apples brand guidelines:

 https://www.apple.com/legal/intellectual-property/guidelinesfor3rdparties.html

 2. Compatibility: Developers may use Apple, Macintosh, iMac, or any other
 Apple word mark (but not the Apple Logo or other Apple-owned graphic
 symbol/logo) in a referential phrase on packaging or
 promotional/advertising materials to describe that the third party product
 is compatible with the referenced Apple product or technology, provided
 they comply with the following requirements.

 a. The Apple word mark is not part of the product name.

 b. The Apple word mark is used in a referential phrase such as “runs on,”
 “for use with,” “for,” or “compatible with.”

 c. The Apple word mark appears less prominent than the product name.

 As for the a) - the product name is Audio Book and apple is simply part
 of the title of what that book is.
 As for the b) - It sounds not correct saying Audio book for Apple iPhone
 since it is not for, or saying runs on or for use with. So how can I
 have Apple included if it is an audio book?
 As for the c) - Apple is not dominating here, Audio book is, or at least
 that's how I would like to see it. But I hope you could confirm if I'm
 viewing it wrong or right.

 According to Apple, I also should have a line saying the brand is copy
 right to Apple and iPhone is brand name in the description, which I can add
 it easily.

 Has any one encountered similar question and know the answer, and if it is
 OK with the guidelines to have it named like that without the risk of being
 suspended.

 The audio book currently named Audio Book: Info for iPhone

 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.twayesh.audiobooks.appleiphone

 Thank you in advance.

Hi:-)
The only way I know to execute Python scripts is with SL4A (scripting layer for
android and Pi4A (Python for Android). This is the project URL
http://code.google.com/p/python-for-android/;. I only loaded the software and
run the demo scripts. But everything runs in the Android device, doesn't need a
PC host with Eclipse. The Pi4A site have a wiki that helps.
Sorry but I can't remember where I read an article about Python on Android ...
maybe in a Linux magazine I bought (???)
Hope that be helpful,

[android-developers] Re: Android app with embedded tutorial

2012-01-16 Thread Kookamonga
Wow, sorry... I didn't see that my initial post had actually gotten
through. I have since asked the question again and come to some sort
of an answer:

Again, apologies for double-posting. :-/

  I found a similar question here:

 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5510258/building-a-tutorial-giving...

  But the answer that is given - showing toasts at startup - is pretty
  much a non-solution. Yes, I can simply have a series of Activities
  that represent the pages of the tutorial and have the user step
  through, but again, I'm looking to know the specific way in which the
  Google Currents app tutorial is written.

  Thanks for your help and time.

[android-developers] Re: Android app to send to C2DM server

2011-12-11 Thread Jacob Nordfalk

On Dec 11, 3:38 pm, smoogli roy.ben.ha...@gmail.com wrote:
 I bumped in C2DM which is, as far as I understand, the equivalent to
 iPhone Push. Seehttp://code.google.com/android/c2dm/

 It is required that there is a 3rd party server that sends messages to
 the C2DM server.

In theory: No.

But 'the C2DM server' is Google (https://android.apis.google.com/c2dm/
send), which routes the messages to the phone (actually its the
Android Market app that does the routing) and the C2DM server
requires a Google login authtoken (which you get by logging into the
Google account used for C2DM).

So, in practice: Yes, as the sender needs the authtoken (the login
credentials for the Google account used for C2DM).
So unless you keep them safe on a server, you'll have to hard code
these credentials into your app, exposing them and making any skilled
hacker able to log into the account (and, for example, disable
C2DM :-)

 I'm writing a server-less application.

 1. Is it possible that an Android application will communicate with
 the C2DM directly?

C2DM works like this: You App gets a registration_id (actually from
the Android Market app that does the routing)

Those that wants to send a message to the device needs to know that
registration_id + authtoken (login credentials for the Google account
used for C2DM).

 2. Can such solution work for pushing small messages to applications
 installed on other devices?

Thats the idea of C2DM

[android-developers] Re: android app throws exception on map overlays tap events

2011-11-23 Thread SripadRaj
well , i'll edit the code and narrow it,
I have a class FestivalEvents which shows a list of events and the
click of each item in the list shows a view containing the complete
details of the events.
the events, details are read from a xml file and the detailed view is
given with this method:

private void setUpDesc(int position) {

SearchListView.setVisibility(View.GONE);
mCheckView = true;
final ParsedData parsedData = items.get(position);
fv.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);

tv1.setText(parsedData.getArticleTitle());
tv2.setText(parsedData.getArticleDesc());
tv3.setText(parsedData.getLink());
date1.setText(parsedData.getDate());

Bundle lBundle = new Bundle();
lBundle.putString(url, parsedData.getImageLink());
Message msg = new Message();
msg.setData(lBundle);
handler.dispatchMessage(msg);

}

the map activity has the same number of events as in the
FestivalEvents class and there are balloons showing the events and the
location of the event. I'm trying to send the indices of the balloons
to the corresponding festival events.
i.e. if I click on the balloon with index = 1, i need to open the
first event in the list. So I'm sending the indices to the setUpDesc()
method of FestivalEvents class to open the detailed view, but the app
crashes with null pointer exception.

I'm sending the balloon indices like this below:

public void onBalloonTap(int index, Item item) {
Intent i = new Intent(c,FestivalEvents.class);
i.putExtra(index, index);
event.setUpDesc(index);
c.startActivity(i);
}

and i'm catching the indices in the FestivalEvents class.

Am I doing anything wrong here? Please help me out.

Thanks in advance

2011-07-08 Thread oochieman
Is your activity still active? You may need an intent to restart it. I
did read somewhere that it's not good practice to start an activity
from a broadcast receiver. The usual way seems to be to add a
notification and let the user choose to start it, like receiving a sms
message. I know that if I were using an app and some other app
interrupted and brought up its own activity I would be more that
annoyed...

 requestLocationUpdates() is asynchronous. It may take seconds or more for
 the location to be determined, depending on the location provider being used
 and the user's circumstances (e.g., is the user getting a GPS signal?). You
 cannot simply call getLastKnownLocation() immediately after calling
 requestLocationUpdates() and expect to get any value.

 Your whole premise (press a button, get a location) will only work if
 either:

 1. You have location updates started early (e.g., onResume()), so by the
 time the user presses the button, you probably have a fix, or

 2. Pressing the button triggers the request for the location, and it simply
 does not have an immediate effect, until the fix arrives

Now I updated the code and even then the same error comes :

LocationListener ll = new mylocationlistener();
lm.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 0, 0,
ll);
Location l =

 Use adb logcat, DDMS, or the DDMS perspective in Eclipse to examine
 LogCat and look at the stack trace to find the line that has the
 NullPointerException. If I had to guess, your location variable is
 null, because getLastKnownLocation() is null, because there is no
 location for the provider, because you have not requested location
 updates on that provider.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Android app crashes when invoking getSystemService(LOCATION_SERVICE)

2011-05-05 Thread Mark Murphy
requestLocationUpdates() is asynchronous. It may take seconds or more
for the location to be determined, depending on the location provider
being used and the user's circumstances (e.g., is the user getting a
GPS signal?). You cannot simply call getLastKnownLocation()
immediately after calling requestLocationUpdates() and expect to get
any value.

Your whole premise (press a button, get a location) will only work if either:

1. You have location updates started early (e.g., onResume()), so by
the time the user presses the button, you probably have a fix, or

2. Pressing the button triggers the request for the location, and it
simply does not have an immediate effect, until the fix arrives

RE: [android-developers] Re: Android app crashes when invoking getSystemService(LOCATION_SERVICE)

2011-05-05 Thread Tommy
You are getting the null pointer b/c getLastKnownLocation has nothing to
give... In this case you would need to call up the GPS listener... When it
gets the current fix it will pop off its subroutine.. Inside there you can
get the lat/lon do what you need to do with your button click then kill the
GPS listener..

[android-developers] Re: Android App developed by third part but no instruction provided.

2010-07-08 Thread Eric F
You haven't offered anyone in the world enough information to help
you.

exe program that will allow me to update the app

Android apps don't have anything to do with exe files. So I am
guessing you have an Android app that does something with a database
on the internet. And the .exe program somehow allows you to edit this
internet content? This wouldn't be considered updating the app.

If you really mean to update the app. Then you simply upload the
new .apk (Android application) to market.android.com and users will be
able to update their app if they want to.

I'd be very warey of any .exe file you receive from developers that
you've likely underpaid. Could you please let us know what your App
is? Its in the public's interest to steer well clear of it due to
potential security risks.

It's a database application built in Delphi I believe. It allows the user to
update an existing database but the database doesn't automatically refresh
in eclipse. That's where we are having the trouble.

You might try further questions at the android-beginners group:
http://groups.google.com/group/android-beginners?pli=1
or http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/android
You might try right clicking and hitting refresh on the folder where
the database file is (in eclipse) if something doesn't automatically
appear. Other than that, you can't distribute any exe files to users
via the android market.

[android-developers] Re: Android App Stores:

2009-11-05 Thread admin.androidsl...@googlemail.com
AndAppStore and SlideME are the best.

But here's the real deal. 20% of my purchases are declined. I then
mail those people to tell them about my app being available on SlideME
and less than 1% of those people convert to SlideME sales even though
they wanted to buy the app initially.

So why is this?
1. They are worried they have already incurred a charge and don't want
to risk paying twice.
2. AndAppStore and SlideME both require download of client installer
app AND authorization of payment method, e.g. Paypal (AndAppStore) or
Amazon billing (SlideME). Both payment types have to confirm identity
- a process which can run to several days if the identification
process requires checking bank statements for confirming bank details
are genuine.

So the user gives up on the purchase.

This is because they want the app immediately - no messing around with
client installs or setting up new payment accounts. They may then
choose to purchase an alternative app or look to download an illegal
copy - sad but true.

Sorry to be negative - but this is my experience.

Recommendation to AndAppStore / SlideME - when users buy apps, they
want something instantly - hesitation means no sale. Alternative
markets should aim for simplicity of click on a weblink, pay with
Paypal and have the download come straight down.

[android-developers] Re: Android App Stores:

2009-11-05 Thread Al Sutton
We, at AndAppStore, do offer PayPal as a payment option to make the
download as instant as possible.

Transaction and take place directly between the user and developer so
you're at the mercy of PayPals fraud screening system, and if their
system wants additional verification measures then there is little we
can do about it. That said most of the transactions go through
instantly and users get to download the app right away.

[android-developers] Re: Android App with Analytics like Flurry

2009-09-12 Thread Mark Murphy

 Do we as developers have to tell the user (via pop up at app start or
 eula or so) if an app is using analytics functionalities, like
 Flurry's or Admob's?

If you are distributing through the Android Market, the Android Market
terms and conditions you agreed to has language describing the
requirements for privacy policies and such.

If you are distributing through other markets, they may have similar
terms. You will need to investigate those.

Also, whatever service(s) you are using (Flurry, AdMob, etc.) may have
their own requirements. You will need to investigate those.

 And if yes, how do you let the users know or are
 there official regulations?

The real answer is that you ask that question of qualified legal counsel,
who can advise you on what is and is not required.

That being said, many applications on the market display their own terms
and conditions in what appears to be an AlertDialog on the first run of
the program. If the user declines, the app closes.

[android-developers] Re: Android App Promotions

From what I hear you could try offering your app on multiple stores,
e.g. Google Market, SlideME, and AndAppStore. Another option is making
it free, if it is currently a pay app, and generating revenue from
AdMob instead. I don't have experience with either method yet, so
can't say how well they work.

I run Google Ads (AdWords). I run a pretty small daily budget for a

generating forum posts about my product.
