Re: [arr] Watch ARR sing and dance in T20

2008-11-26 Thread Ranjith K
http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=qxtj0Ytre7I&fmt=18

append &fmt=18 to get the high quality version.
not all videos have high quality version. It is in mp4 format (h264/aac).

you can find the file in your browsers cache (sort by date modified in
descending order while you are watching the video and it will the one on
top) and append the extension .mp4 to the filename.
or you can use a youtube video downloader (the DownloadHelper firefox
extension works fine)

you can use avisynth and demux just the audio (simple stream copy) and you
will get file.m4a (aac).
you can also convert to mp3 in avisynth.

ranjith

[arr] A.R. Rahman and Selvaraghavan together

2008-10-31 Thread Ranjith K
Yuvan Shankar Raja has been so close to Selvaraghavan right from the early
days of his career. But then, as three of these special personalities;
Selvaraghavan, Yuvan and cinematographer Aravind Krishna split up, they had
to give up their joint venture of production as 'White Elephants'.

Finally, Selvaraghavan opted for G.V. Prakash to score music for his
forthcoming flick 'Aayirathil Oruvan' starring Paruthiveeran fame Karthi,
Reema Sen, Andrea and Parthiban in lead roles. Soon after getting completed
with this project, Selvaraghavan will kick-start his next project featuring
new faces in the lead role and A.R. Rahman has signed to score music for the
film…

Re: [arr] Let's go the legal way?

2008-10-30 Thread Ranjith K
Why cant we ask them to post it on some online music store. Then they
wouldnt need a minimum guarantee as the cost associated would be much
lesser. I guess ARR would have already given them the BGMs and additional
tracks just like the songs. They just have to encode it and upload.

Sometime back when Amith approached a music company for a release of Tu Hi
Mera Dil, they had asked for a minimum guarantee of 100 i guess. But that
was a re-release.

The song mampoove was from yodha (1992) and was reused in pavithra (1993).
Vaishnavar didnt have that tune. It was thrown in as an extra in its tamil
dub Andhi Maalai / Fantasy.

I dont think Saathiram means Scripture.

Found this translation on the net.
http://samadrishti.blogspot.com/2007/02/suttum-vizhi-sudar-bharatiyar-and-love.html

Suttum vizhi sudar than Kannamma
Suriye chandiraro?
Vattakkariye vizhi - Kannamma!
Vanakkarumai kollo?

Your gaze has the brightness of the sun and moon
Your eyes reflect (*) the darkness of the skies

Pattu karuneela - pudavai
Padhittha nalviram
Natta nadunisiyil - Therium
Natchathirangalladi!

The diamonds on your dark silk saree,
show me the stars in broad daylight. (*)

Solai malaroliyo -Unathu
Sundarapunnagai than?
Neela kadalalaiye - Unathu
Nenjin alaigaladi !
Kolak kuyil oosai - Unathu
Kuralin inimaiyadi!
Valai kumariyadi - Kannamma
Maruvak kadhal kondain.

Your smile is the bloom of the garden,
Your heart, the waves of the sea,
Your voice , sweet like the koel's
My love longs for union, Kannamma

Sathiram pesugirai - Kannamma
Sathiram yedhukkadi?
Athiram kondavarke - Kannamma
Sathiram undodi!

You talk of Rules, Kannamma
What rules do paramours (*) follow?

Moothavar sammadhiyil - Vadhuvai
Muraigal pinbhu saivom
Kathiruppenodi! - Ithupar

Elders , marriage and rituals can wait,
Can I ? Come now,

Kannatthu muttham ondru!

Let me kiss you.

(*) changed after expert opinion although the expert disagrees with the
translation to paramour, and thinks it should have been rational people ,
reflecting on Bharatiyar's call for rage/ anger/ passion in almost all his
poems. Anger / Rage in the positive sense of bringing about change and
opposing meaningless traditions , superstitious beliefs and of course,
oppression.

Notes and Links

This is not one of Rahman's works. He was just a musician in the group.

All of us have encountered the numerous instances when composers have
flicked others' tunes and passed it off as their own. But have you heard
of someone crediting one's own compositions to someone else? That's
precisely
what Malayalam composer Ouseappachan did. He released his own album called
'Fantasy' under the name 'Andhi Maalai' in Tamil with an ARR composition
from
the film Yodha thrown in. The music was credited to Rahman. Needless to add
the
album sold lots more than what it would have under Ouseappachan's name. All
ARR
had done was play keyboards for the album. [Courtesy: 'AskGops' Gopal]
Andhi Maalai was released under Melody label in India in 1994. Fantasy was
later released by Pyramid audio.

Malayalam movie Vaishnavar had the same tunes as this album.

Sevvanam from pavitra is a reused tune from Mampoove of Yodha.
Vaishnavar was composed by Ouseppachan. ARR played the keyboard.
Gops has clarified this many times in the group. You may seach the archives.

2008-05-31 Thread Ranjith K
On the personal front, 1995 proved to be a momentous year for him. That
year, on March 12, he got married to Saira Banu, sister-in-law of the Tamil
actor Rahman and the daughter of a Madras based businessman.

In April 1995, Bombay got released. The leading character's name was Saira
Banu.
Is that just a coincidence ?

Re: [arr] What's the best encoding to listen to a rahman audio cd on portable?

2008-05-30 Thread Ranjith K
WMA offers lossless compression which will use around 450 MB per Audio CD.

AAC would be better than MP3. 256Kbps AAC should be fine. iTunes uses that
for the high quality streams they offer.

perfect,*here, and a nice scene at the hospital, featuring Nour El

Re: [arr] Those seeking Rahman from the 90s

2008-02-04 Thread Ranjith K
yes the sound still remains very very arr ... my uncle who recognises arr as
the composer of bombay & gentleman still recognises that its rahman when a
new song is played on tv ...

i would prefer to go back to my childhood days when i listen to arr of the
90s ... i dont want to remember the office days instead ... ;)

if he delivers 90s kind of music, we would say hes repetitive .. else we
would crave for the 90s music ..
arr bashing is becoming fashionable these days ...

Can you even imagine the no: of page visits this would have generated for
them from this group.
Let alone the no: of user reviews / comments. It could be a cheap tactic or
sheer ignorance from the reviewer, and either don't deserve the attention
that its getting. The reviewer probably would have got his raise by now,
seeing the response he has generated. ;)

Re: [arr] Rahman's Magic in background Score

2007-12-05 Thread Ranjith K

http://sureshmehcnit.sulekha.com/blog/post/2007/12/listening-movies.htm
This lack of importance to background score in Indian films can also be
because of two other external factors. They are lack of official recognition
for background scores and lack of good film critics in India. Till date
there is no category commenced in National Film Awards for best background
score.

I dont think this is entirely true. National award is given for best music
and not just songs. Jhonson got back to back national awards for his scores
in Ponthan Mada and Sukrutham. For Sukrutham the song composer Bombay Ravi
also won the national award.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Film_Award_for_Best_Music_Direction
Johnson is affectionately called as the John Williams of Malayalam
cinemafor his background scores; some of his best can be heard in
Padmarajan
movies like Namukku parkkan munthiri thoppukal.

[arr] I have no differences with Aamir Khan: AR Rahman

2007-11-23 Thread Ranjith K
http://www.santabanta.com/cinema.asp?pid=17827

AR Rahman made an impact with his debut in 1992, although not many believed
he would be around for too long. Today, he has become the heartbeat of the
nation. He chats about his past, present and future.

*Q. What is it about the music industry that makes you angry?*
A. I have stopped getting angry. There is no point blaming others. I believe
in being the change, not the observer. One person can inspire others, just
like one candle can light a million candles. Just be true to yourself. The
Internet helps people to focus on their objectives, and to consolidate
elements to make a difference.

*Q. The Internet is a boon and a bane, what with free downloads. *
A. The Internet is like your mind. It can be filled with either good
thoughts, or bad thoughts, or both. The Internet is a personal thing.

*Q. How do you strike a balance between South Indian films and Bollywood,
when it comes to your work?*
A. It is terrifying, trying to maintain in both. I am working in a team, the
director helps. If I were to work alone, then it would have been difficult.

*Q. Do you still work at night?*
A. Not anymore, no.

*Q. What are your forthcoming Tamil releases?*
A. There is one film named 'Sakarkatti', and an animated film named 'Sultan'
that Rajnikanth's daughter, Saundarya, is making.

*Q. It must be more difficult to compose music for an animation film.*
A. Not really. It is the same thing, in fact, you can use your imagination
more freely.

*Q. Now that you have Hollywood films, have Tamil and Hindi films taken a
back seat?*
A. In a way, yes. I used to do six to seven Tamil movies, and three to four
Hindi films, annually. I have reduced my work by half, and am taking things
easier. There is much less stress.

*Q. The dubbed version of 'Sivaji' will have Hindi songs with Tamil tunes.*
A. Yes, because the Tamil culture should be obvious. We are not trying to
set it in a North Indian environment. It is dubbed only so that people can
understand.

*Q. What are the other releases that you are looking forward to?*
A. The album, 'The Lord of the Rings'. It is releasing on December 10, and
it is going to be a huge event.

*Q. Whom do you like better, Rahman the music director, or Rahman, the
singer?*
A. That is a difficult question. If you like yourself too much, then you get
into trouble, and if you don't, then you get into trouble anyway. So, I am
critical.

*Q. How do you prevent yourself from getting too complacent?*
A. I have always been clear about one thing – I am just an instrument, and
God controls me. If I am lazy, just sitting in one place, then I am like a
battery that has not been charged. There has to be excitement, which is why
I take up projects that are exciting.

*Q. How do you deal with critics?*
A. The Internet has helped a lot – we can check blogs, and see what people
have written, what the negatives and positives are. When we make a film with
a big star, we have to make sure the music is in his favour. We cannot then
experiment.

* Q. How do you adjust to the different environments that you work in?*
A. When you are an adult, you speak in varied tones to your child, wife, or
intellectual. You become a different person within each situation. That is a
simple analogy for the way I work.

*Q. Tell us about 'The Lord of the Rings'.*
A. It is probably one of the most complex projects that I have been involved
in. It is good composition. The whole team was in Chennai recently to
complete the mixing. It has more than 15 tracks.

*Q. There are rumours of differences between Aamir Khan and you.*
A. Just because I am not composing his next film does not mean we have
fallen out.

*Q. The music of 'Elizabeth – The Golden Age' seems deliberately loud.*
A. When we began, the music sounded very arty, and I felt that the film
would drag if we continued with the same music. The film itself is artistic,
so the pulsating, throbbing music is in contrast to the feel of the music.
It was a creative decision to make the film enjoyable.

*Q. What are your other forthcoming films, besides 'Ghajini'?*
A. There are a few – 'Jane Tu Jane Na', 'Jodha Akbar', 'Yuvraj', 'Aadab',
'Dilli 6', and the Hindi version of 'Sivaji'.

*Q. What are your favourite top 10 projects?*
A. Very difficult to choose, when it is your own work, but here goes –
'Roza', 'Bombay', 'Taal', 'Lagaan', 'Zubeida', 'Rang De Basanti', 'Dil Se',
and 'Rangeela'

Re: [arr] Re: Out of the ordinary tracks in ARR's creative repertoire- abt ViwsaVidhata

2007-07-03 Thread Ranjith K

Humdum Pyara Pyara was not by ARR.
One of the Vishwa Vidhaata releases had 2 Instrumentals though. Think it was
the indian release.

Is it really an ARR composition for the movie??
OR the music company put in to fill the CD?
This one sounds soo out of place in the listing.
And interestingly, the lyrics were by Mahbood
whereas all other tracks are by Mishra.
Its surely no there in south versions.

 Gopal,

Agreed that NETAJI version was the INA anthem, but so is our current
Jana Gana Mana. As we list Rahman's JanaGanaMana as HIS
interpretation / composition, so also can we accept the INA version
as Rahman's interpretation of that anthem, hence his composition ?

We will have to wait till the DVD of NETAJI is available. Any idea
when it will be released ?

Shouldnt 'Rahmania' the Bollywood Brass band album also be on the list?

Also, there is a recorded and released live performance of Tu Hi Re by
Hariharan when Colonial Cousins performed on MTV Unplugged (the first
Indians to do so) nearly a decade back.
I have an mp3 that I will upload to the Files section.

Did they remade the songs in tamil for thic compilation or what?
Also, the listing still shows all the song titles in hindi.

The single DVD set comes with deleted scenes, which I had already seen
before, thanks to a pirated DVD I bought off National market . It also
includes the song 'Rey Bhaiyya Chhootey Lagaan' , previously released as
'Zin Kinak Zin' in a double-cassette collection called The Spirit of
Lagaan that had background scores, dialogues and the songs from the movie.
( Including the Sadhna Sargam version of 'O Paalanhaare', which I think is
way, WAY better than the Lata version we are familiar with) Also picked up
the documentary, though only the VCD seems to be available right now.

Is 'Rey Bhaiyya Chhootey Lagaan' same as the previously released 'Zin
Kinak Zin' ? Then why does CNN-IBN claim it as never heard before ? Does
the new collectors edition contain all the Dialogues and Songs which was
part of the cassette The Spirit Of Lagaan, including the sadhana sargam
version of O Paalanhaare. Could someone please list out the contents of the
new collectors edition lagaan dvd.

Can someone please post the movie version of O Paalanhare and also Zin
Kinak Zin ?

Can someone please post the Extended Version of Only You and Hey Jawan
Tujhe Salam ?

Similar to O Palanhaare, wasnt there 2 versions of Humma Humma and Gopala
Gopala. Is there other such instances?

Was there an S P B, Sujatha version of Pudhu vellai mazhai in Roja as it

Gops,

I meant the extended version of only you (released in indian mantra) ...
and just the normal hey jawan tujhe salam song ...
i dont have both ... will it be possible to get the mp3 ...

Other instances of extra songs like shauk hain getting released in
compilations like the mp3 cd that got just released. for eg: the extra songs
in jeans, tehzeeb, dil se, kannathil muthamittal ...

I saw a rahman compilation with Instrumentals of Taal. Was it done by rahman
? AFAIK, only roja and gentleman instrumentals were released officially. Was
there more ?

Regarding the WOHE query, sometime back i saw a compilation with Warriors in
Peace in music world and kept it aside. Thought i'll check my cd and
comeback and buy it. But i couldnt find it when i came back. I dont clearly
remember whether it had the chinese version or the hindi version :(

Does the new collectors edition contain all the Dialogues and Songs which

This is not really a song. It's just a recitation of a few verses somewhat
musically.

Kinak Zin ?

Tujhe Salam ?

There is no extended version of Hey Jawan Tujhe Salaam. In fact, there is
no released version. It was performed just once at a benefit cocnert for
Kargil soldiers in Delhi back in 2001. It's just the Vande Mataram song with
Maa Tujhe SAlaam replaced with Hey Jawan Tujhe Salaam.

I don't think so. I checked this with SAtish back then, he wasn't sure

[arr] 'Rahman's music doesn't seduce immediately'

2007-06-14 Thread Ranjith K

http://www.rediff.com/movies/2007/jun/14rahman1.htm

'Filmnews' Anandan, a well-known publicist, remembered in an interview some
years ago how Rahman was initiated into the world of films while he was
still a toddler and was called Dilip Kumar. The family embraced Islam after
Sekhar's death and his widow's marriage to a Muslim businessman.

Anandan remembered Rahman going to the film studios with his father Sekhar
who was an assistant music director in Malayalam films.

'Once a music director overheard the four-year-old trying out a tune on a
harmonium,' Anandan said. 'He quickly spread a cloth over the keys.
Undaunted, the child repeated the tune, this time running his fingers
confidently over the cloth. Who would have thought then that the boy would
scale such heights?'

Rahman says he has a simple explanation for his success. "I believe that
every individual, even an atom, can move only with the will of God," he
offers. "I don't take credit for doing all this. If I did, then I would fall
flat."

Re: [arr] Provoked MP3s out on streets!

2007-04-11 Thread Ranjith K

Checked karen davids myspace page and these are the 4 tracks up there.
"Carry me home" is the latest live studio recording (inklien version) up
there and not normal one which was previosly there. So somebody has recorded
it from her myspace page.
But only the track "Alive" is from Provoked.
I seached for provoked tracks on the net and was really surprised to see a
site giving mp3 ringtones (25secs) of "Alive" in both English and Hindi
(Jiye To Jiye).
Has anyone heard this Hindi version of Alive before ?

Re: [arr] Provoked MP3s out on streets!

2007-04-10 Thread Ranjith K

"Alive" and "Carry Me Home" was up on Karen Davids myspace page. I think
"Save Me" was also there. But dont remember seeing "Shillong".
Sometime back there was a hack to download mp3s from myspace just like
d/ling videos from youtube. Myspace fixed the problem pretty quickly. But
somebody could have sneaked it by then.

Does it have the new version of Alive also there on Karens myspace page ? Is
the "Shillong" song also a full version or is it the 30 sec samples
available on the net ?

He was just answering to why his 3 songs didnt bag any awards at the oscars.
And saying how the indian music composers can increase the chances of
winning at the oscars, i.e., in case they are craving for it.
He, in turn, is trying to create a sound of his own to be recognised

Abt the reuters interview, I dont think ARR would have meant this, even if

DVD Review: *Pray For Me Brother*
March 11, 2007
Kishore

*A.R. Rahman - In
Concert*
DVD
*Buy now* from [image:
Amazon.com]
One piece of memory that has lingered in me from my visit to New York City
a few months earlier is a middle aged woman who sat under a skyscraper in a
shady corner of Times Square clutching a tiny board in her weak hand, which
read - *I lost my job. I have two kids. I don't have anyone else. Please
help me*.
If there is one language common across the world it's the language of
suffering and tears - be it a remote village in Somalia or a hip center of
America. That's one reason why Bharatbala, the producer of this music video,
chose to shoot *Pray For Me Brother* amidst the skyscrapers of Los
Angeles, rather than a war ravaged African village.
A.R. Rahman's *Pray For me Brother* is an initiative by the A.R. Rahman
Foundation to collect funds for the UN Millennium Development Program aimed
at eradicating poverty by the year 2015. Rahman spins his magic once again
with a music and lyrics that is sure to have a global appeal. Add the video
to the song, and you get a real treat to your soul - all for a noble cause.
As is always the case with Rahman, the music grows on you.
The video for the song has been shot in Los Angeles, with towering
skyscrapers at one side showing the great economic strides the world has
made and beggars taking street corners on the other - symbolizing the idea
that suffering is universal, irrespective of which part of the world you
live in.
The video is filled with symbolism and emotions. Human suffering has no
color. And it is only pertinent that the entire video symbolizing human
suffering be shot in Black and White. Los Angeles being the location, the
video has a Krumper dancing through the rap part of the song.
Krumpingis a form of dance that
originated in the African-American community of
South Central Los Angeles - a rather sinister and aggressive dance form,
intended as an expression of anger or a release of pent-up emotion through
violent, exaggerated, and dramatic moves. (Definition Source:
Wikipedia
.)
The music has a mix of traditional western and rap. And the very
composition is intended at reaching out to a global audience, the universal
message being - "Are you searching for a reason to be kind..." and binding
this message with another universal emotion of "Prayer". Rahman's
melancholic voice and Blaaze's rap couldn't have merged better. To enable
access to the video across all media including mobiles and PDAs, the entire
video has been shot in Vertical-Cinemascope, rather than the usual
Horizontal picture. At times it is a pain to your eyes watching a *
vertical* video, given that most of the audience would actually be
watching it on television, rather than their mobile phones.
The DVD contains the song "Pray For Me Brother" and "The Making of Pray
For Me Brother" featuring A.R. Rahman, Bharatbala and Blaaze taking us
through the conceptualization of the album, purpose and their experiences
while making the music and shooting the video. Given the non-commercial
nature of the album and the cause behind it, it is a must-have for anyone
who appreciates good music.

It is well aware that AVM Productions is bringing out 'Sivaji' directed by
Shankar, with Rajanikanth and Shriya in the lead in Tamil with a heavy
budget.

The Telugu dubbing rights and distribution rights were bagged by Bellamkonda
Suresh.

This prestigious film has music from AR Rahman.

The producer is making efforts to release audio of the Telugu version on
March 15.

While Suman playing a key role in the movie, Nayanatara is shaking her legs
in a special song. It was planned to release the film on the Tamil New
Year's Day., i.e., on April 14.
