The event held last Wednesday night at the Venkata Subba Rao Concert Hall, was arranged to honour Martin Luther King III – son of Martin Luther King, Jr – on his visit to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his father’s prilgrimage to India in 1959. His father was here to meet Gandhiji and learn about his methods of non-violence so that he could employ them in the Civil Rights movements back home. The evening began with renowned Tamil poet Vairamuthu reciting his poem, *The Black Mahatma, *which had specially been written for the occasion. The creation was inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr, Gandhiji and Barack Obama. Alluding to Obama, he wrote: “Thy lofty dream has come true Martin Luther! A black dove built its nest in the White House!” What followed was a musical tribute by the students and faculty of A.R Rahman’s K.M Music Conservatory as they presented two popular Rahman compositions. The first one was the theme from *Bombay* with its underlying message of non-violence. The piece began with a mellifluous Indian flute accompanied by the low, muffled, subdued rumbling of two giant drums known as the Timpani. It was the kind of rolling thunder before the first monsoons – a premonition of the wet, grey days to follow. A synthesizer sustained a low bass note throughout, creating a sombre atmosphere, and the joyous tinkle of the triangle and the Glocken Spiel (a xylophone-like instrument) was deliberately lost in the foreshadowing gloom, to accentuate it by contrast. This is a sad piece. And when the flute side-stepped to give way to a quartet of three violins and a cello, you couldn’t help but feel the knot in your throat. Oh how beautifully they played! Well, created. Because that was what it was, a most soulful creation, as if the four were weaving together an intricate mat of such harmonious sorrow that it paradoxically made you feel peacefully content. It was strange. And while the violins gently wept, the flute came back in, improvised consolingly and led the quartet out to a lingering end… “Jai ho!” the sixteen-member student choir shouted with such vigour and obvious glee, pumping their fists in the air, that the gloom that had settled like a thick layer of dust was blown away in a single breath, leaving the audience gasping. The second song, performed to pre-recorded music, was Rahman’s Oscar-winning song *Jai Ho*from *Slumdog Millionaire.* There was a drastic shift in moods as flashing, stroboscopic lights came on and the student-choir, clad in black straight-jackets swayed to the rhythm, smiled from ear to ear, snapped their fingers and pumped their fists high in the air every time they shouted “Jai ho”! There was celebration in the air as they sang to the Oscar-success of their idol, their teacher, their inspiration and founder of their school. The thunderous applause at the end was a fitting appreciation. The next performance was a dramatic rendition of Martin Luther King, Jr’s “most famous and stirring speech”, *I Have a Dream, *by Kamal Haasan. He had memorised the speech and as he walked around the stage delivering it in his deeply rich baritone, there was a photographic projection on two screens in the backdrop.. Photos of the most stunning quality – Gandhiji, Martin Luther King Jr giving his speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC on August 23, 1963, and of past and present Indian and American leaders – recreated history. As Kamal Haasan ended his dramatic performance, with the final words “…Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” the visual projection in the backdrop shifted to a black and white photo of Barack Obama in the Oval Office. And as the words still hung in the air and

He said that it was not only God's blessings which saw him win the coveted Gold-plated statuettes but also saw him selected to collect them on behalf of his fellow Indian musicians. “It’s the aspiration of all (the musicians) and God selected me to collect the award on their behalf. This award belongs to every person in the music industry,’ was Rahman’s theory on winning the Oscars. He repeated ‘Ella Pugazhum Iraivanuke’ (All Glory to the Almighty), which he spoke at the Oscar awards ceremony last week. Rahman added: “I used to wonder why Naushad, Ilayaraja, M.S Viswanathan, Madan Mohan and others did not get the awards. But they have people’s love, which is greater honor than the Oscars.” The surprise of the evening was the presence of veteran Carnatic musician Balamurali Krishna, who was the chief guest and Ilayaraja, which set to rest speculation in the music world about their differences with Rahman. Balamurali Krishna said: “The Oscars awards is a recognition of Rahman’s musical creativity and hard work”. Heaping laurels on Rahman, the maestro Ilayaraja said: “There are only a few who possess immense talent and still go on to make it big. Rahman is a phenomenal musician. If MSV is Athara Sruthi, I am Panchamam and Rahman is Panchamam” On his part, veteran director K Balachander, who first introduced Rahman in his home production* Roja*, directed by Maniratnam, said: “Rahman is a rare genius. When other music composers make castles with their music, Rahman builds monuments’. MSV blessed Rahman with many more such awards and said it was a new beginning for the Indian music industry. Rahman in his speech pleaded with his fans not to create hatred between the music directors by comparing them. Said Rahman: “ I have been seeing the hate mails flooding the net. I request my fans from degrading someone else’s music, the music lovers should stop making such comments and using abusive languages” Ilayaraja presented Rahman with a golden chain while Harris Jayaraj presented a golden ring to the Mozart of Madras. Following her barnstorming performance at the Grammys last week, organisers are desperate for her to perform at this Sunday's ceremony. So desperate, in fact, that she could perform lying down if she wants to. According to reports today the rapper is keen to fulfill her commitment to perform her Oscar-nominated song from Slumdog Millionaire, Jai Ho, at the awards ceremony. She is said to be trying to find a way to overcome the physical issues of performing so soon after giving birth, including, it's alleged, an appearance by hologram or, failing that, one delivered from a bed live on stage. MIA, real name Maya Arulpragasam, went into labour just hours after performing at the Grammys with Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and T.I, where she marked the occasion by wearing an eye-popping transparent dress over her blooming belly. She blogged earlier this week that her baby boy was the most amazing thing on the planet, and confirmed he was born on Wednesday 11 February after she went into the early stages of labour on the night of her performance (8 February). Now Oscars producer Laurence Mark is said to have offered her a large bed to perform from at the 81st annual Academy Awards later this week, hoping that if being nine months pregnant won't stop her performing then neither will being a new mother. She's eager to perform ... we've said things like 'we're willing to have her enter on a large bed,' Mark is reported to have told the WENN network. We'll make it as easy for her as we can. MIA is nominated for an award in the best original song category for her collaboration with AR Rahman on Jai Ho, which features on the soundtrack to the Danny Boyle film Slumdog Millionaire. According to a BBC interview with Rahman, the Indian composer said that the issue of an MIA performance at the Oscars is the million-dollar question. She wants to. In fact, she said she'll do it with a hologram. She has all these ideas, said Rahman. He added: I don't know how it's going to be possible, though. Having a baby is such an important thing in your life – more important than winning an Oscar. Something tells us MIA will find a way to balance both. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/feb/17/mia-oscars-performance-2009

Re: [arr] Will there be a Slumdog Effect?
I guess so ... the airwaves in US ( let me not generalize .. atleast in the west coast ) - almost all of the FM Channels have been talking and playing SDM songs my whole class ( batch of 50 ) have bought the album in iTunes... quite a few have started looking for more from ARR. another pleasant thing about the radio attention for SDM is / was one of the RJ today had a lovely comment which goes something like when a composer releases an album , based on the genre of the song , a particular channel that specialises in it ( rock / slow rock , rb , soul etc..) pick it up and promote it and give it all the air time and love as per their liking .. with AR Rahman , everybody wants a piece of the action because every one of these songs are so different and so good that it is going to AR Rahman domination till the oscar fever settles ... from the 6 -8 stations me and frds frequent ...o Saya , Jai Ho ( of course) , Mausam and Liquid dance are getting their share of air time ... Jai ho tops the list ... followed by o saya . of course my observation is not substantiated by any stats , but just a passing note of a fan :) On Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 7:58 PM, Chord purev...@yahoo.com wrote: Does anyone anticipate sales of other ARR CDs going way up with all the attention he has been getting with Slumdog? I think those Westerners who like the song Jai Ho from Slumdog will be extremely impressed, even more so, if they hear other ARR's best CDs from the past. And perhaps sales of D6 in India will rise dramatically too.

Re: [arr] Oscar Watch: Composer
Hi RR Hollywood music in movies ( of late ) is predominantly sound effects rather than music. There is a huge difference between music and sound effects as we all understand ... The fact that ARR tried to bring music into SDM rather than sound effects and punctuated the whole movie with it along with very strong intervals of silence , makes me think SDM is ideal candidate for a nomination and a BIG win This is what i love abt SDM in terms of its BGM's , Sound track and Music - Music rather than sound effects - New sound ( Hollywood is hearing a completely different style in SDM , so far apart from the regular winners ) ( ARR has done the traditional hollywoodish score in Queen E ) - And the intelligent use of melody throughout the movie. On Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:17 PM, Ramesh R triscod...@yahoo.com wrote: ARR's effort in SdM works great as a combination of songs and score. Evaluated for just the music score there's not much that stands out for me. For sure, it supports the movie and the action on screen but does it go beyond that? And I think I've mentioned this earlier-- there's little or no thematic development (and that's something I could say for a lot of ARR scores in general). It looks like he's just scoring the scene. But where is he really connecting the dots? I'd like to think that a good score is something that, in addition to supporting the movie, introduces certain ideas, toys with them, and develops them. Cohesiveness is another attribute that I'm looking for. A good score can provide a subtext or commentary not just on what's happening on screen, but also on what might happen or where is this going. I'm not saying that SdM is a bad score. It's a good soundtrack, and a real departure for ARR. Latika's theme is lovely-- it represents Jamal's love and longing and was used to good effect in the end with a summary of the journey. The action theme (Escape) was another that was put to good use in the chase sequences. I just think that there's not much in it to make the cut for best score when the field is already rich with some great works this year. Alexandre Desplat has been in great form this year with strong scores for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Largo Wench. Danny Elfman has Milk Standard Operating Procedure. James Newton Howard has The Happening Defiance. Zbigniew Priesner has Anonyma. Thomas Newman has WALL-E. Adrian Johnston has Brideshead Revisited. I'm not just blindly putting these names out. There are a number of sites (Itunes, Youtube, Amazon) where you can listen to free clips. Anyone remember the Oscar-winning scores of Brokeback Mountain or Babel? Both were by Gustavo Santaolalla. Both of those were very minimalistic and sparse with little or no themes. Perhaps the recent trend is that if you have a wildly popular film, it will just drive the critics and voters into having a favorable opinion of it for the sub-categories too (yes, I do think that ARR's score for SdM is riding the crest of the movie's massive popularity). Or perhaps the critics really do believe in the 'less is more' philosophy. How else would you explain bewildering decisions like nominating Clint Eastwood for Best Score for Changeling, or James Newton Howard's dronish score for Michael Clayton for last year's Oscar? If it's really a trend then I don't like it one bit and perhaps I'm in the minority here. As a parting thought I'll link to the youtube clip of what I consider as signs of brilliant scoring in recent times. Check out the opening scene to Birth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hFO9sA7LsA scored by Alexandre Desplat. It's a beauty of construction. There's a delicate repeating motif with flute followed by the celeste (a Desplat favorite), drones, bass strings, tympani, romantic violins, horns and a lot more. It does way more than just scoring the jogging scene. It's proof of why Desplat is rated so high today. Robyn Hitchcock makes the list with his song (Up to Our Nex) from the excellent *Rachel Getting Married*. Sadly, Tunde Adebimpe's touching Neil Young cover from the same feature isn't eligible. *High School Musical 3*has a bone-shuddering 11 songs on the list, so expect that to feature somewhere. Other songs of interest include the memorable Dracula's Lament from *Forgetting Sarah Marshall* (which would make an awesome live performance on Oscar night) and M.I.A.'s collaboration with A.R. Rahman on the *Slumdog Millionaire* soundtrack (O Saya). Jack White and Alicia Keys' Bond theme Another Way to Die also makes the list, and could make for a memorable live performance if the song is nominated. Peter Gabriel's contribution to the *Wall-E* soundtrack, Down to Earth is also another likely (and somewhat unusual) contender. Fortunately the rules have been changed this year, and only two songs from a single film can be nominated. Waiting for the master to belt out his melodies. Dream, because very tune is designed to buoy up the musical bar codes. Which adds up to the right time for me to meet the diminutive 42-year old composer for a quick round of questions. Excerpts from a musical chat: Q: Your Slumdog Millionaire has earned rave reviews. How is composing for an international director like Danny Boyle different from composing forSubhash Ghai or Mani Ratnam? A: Danny Boyle seemed like someone I had known from my salad days. He loved the music I liked to experiment with during my earlier days as a music composer. It was almost as if I was coming full circle. This was the stuff I always wanted to do and now I had a director willing to tap that. It all happened like a flash in two months. Each director is unique and comes with his different set of experiences. It's like one man's food is another person's poison but both have their unique quality. While Mani sir is very futuristic,Ghai saab has an uncanny understanding of the pulse of the North Indian audience. In a way, working with Ghai saab helped me learn a lot and I have also unlearnt some stuff. Q: You were assisting Illayaraja at one point and your assistant Harris Jayaraj has now branched out independently. When you look back, what thoughts come to your mind? A: I think music is a gift to people and you cannot deny it to anyone. People like Raja sir are a legend and Harris has a great understanding and sense of setting lyrics to music. I also like music composer Yuvan Shankar. We meet sometimes dung awards ceremonies. In the pressure of finishing your work, you end up not listening to the good compositions of others. You can't casually say this is good or bad.Illayaraja and Harris are both popular and I respect them. Q: Harris Jayaraj scored the music for the Tamil version of Ghajini. You've done so for the Hindi remake. Are you ready for the comparisons? A: (Laughs) Yes there will be good and bad comparisons. But, I am prepared for them. No can replace anyone. I have not seen the original Tamil film because I didn't want to be influenced by it. I wanted to finish my work and then watch the film. Q: What roles has your apprenticeship with Illayaraja played in the music person that you are today? A: Err... Illayaraja's influence is so overwhelming on everyone in Tamil Nadu, it almost permeates your body. I respect his music so much. But just to get my style in, I had to stay away from his music. In the past when I have said that people read it out of context and things got misunderstood. Q: You mentioned you had fights with Subhash Ghai over the music of Yuvvraaj. A: (Giggles) Oh I said that to make conversations with journalists spicy. Otherwise, it's boring. Well, we had creative differences, just agreeing to disagree , deciding on what works best for the film and trying to strike a balance between what we like and what the producers want. Q: This is the first time you have composed for Salman Khan. Was he involved in the music? A: No, this is the second time. I did a film earlier called Dil Ne Jise Apne Kaha, which he starred in. I did two songs for the film but couldn't complete it as something came up for me in London. Q: You have a yen for

Giddier than A Life Less Ordinary, grimier than Trainspotting, more horrifying - in a real-world way - than 28 Days Later, Slumdog Millionaire takes your breath away before you get a chance to suck it in. » Click to enlarge image Freida Pinto makes her movie debut in Slumdog Millionaire. (Fox Searchlight Pictures) 'Slumdog Millionaire' Running time: 121 minutes Rated: R (violence, disturbing images, language) The story, adapted by screenwriter Simon Beaufoy from a novel by Vikas Swarup, is 21st-century Dickens by way of India. Set in contemporary Mumbai, the picture opens on 18-year-old Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a penniless orphan who grew up homeless yet has somehow managed to be on the verge of winning millions on an Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? With each trivia question, the picture flashes back to an earlier time in Jamal's tragicomic life, revealing the extraordinary education that lead to his knowledge of the answers. Boyle credits casting director Loveleen Tandan as a co-director on the film, and certainly her assistance in finding the right Indian actors to play Jamal, his brother and their girl neighbor at various ages was crucial to the movie's success. The fates of these three are intertwined throughout their lives. Our ability to remain emotionally involved in the expansive story depends largely on the six young actors - some of whom were found in the actual slums of Mumbai - who bring these characters to life. The most arresting parts of the film immerse us in those slums, though not via a Sally Struthers-type guilt trip. Instead, the picture recognizes both the misery and the vitality of life in Mumbai's poorest areas. Boyle's camera rushes through cramped, dirty alleys chasing after his young cast. With dynamic cinematography and fantastic framing, he captures the youthful exuberance of these kids - which of course makes the horrors awaiting them all the harder to bear. Hunger, kidnapping and abuse all arrive, yet Jamal meets and (mostly) conquers each with the sort of resilience that only exists in childhood. Slumdog Millionaire is ultimately inspiring, but in the most honest, gut-wrenching of ways. http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/napervillesun/entertainment/movies/1275582,6_9_2_NA13_SLUMDOG_S1.article

When we saw Boyle speak at the Toronto International Film Festival, he called A.R Rahman, the man who composed the 'Slumdog' score, the Puff Daddy of India. ** THis is an insult to ARR in my humble opinion ! In this interview with Anne Thompson from Telluridehttp://weblogs.variety.com/thompsononhollywood/2008/10/slumdog-million.html, Boyle discusses his upcoming crowd-pleaser, 'Slumdog' but also delivers this great little quote about music which we felt we had to excerpt cause it says a everything about how music is used in films and his unique approach. The music [in films] in India is much louder, much more confident. We hide music in Western films, because it's a hidden manipulative tool because we don't want people to notice. We want it to to work on you and massage your heart for whatever reason, but actually [as a filmmaker], you don't want it to be noticed. [In India] it's like BLAM, this is music! We can dance to this! So I love that fact that you can mix [the music] quite high, but it's also still quite melodramatic. One week I discover Roja and next week it is ADA and the week after that it is Duet and then it is Pray for me brother to give you sample of much I shift across the chronological order of his records. Coming to Hawa , sun Hawa , I did recognize that it was ARR's quite distinctively on the first listen. Saying just saying , the seasoned listeners have the extra burden of being familiar with all his previous works and expectations are also mile high. So may be it is just a classic case of wanting more from someone who is delivering consistently , but you are so used to consistency that it becomes a matter of fact and bar keep raising and raising from the receiving end ! Another thing I am amazed is , the rate of at which ARR churns out his songs. It is incredible ! Artists in this side of the world come out with albums after long gaps and release singles in between , but looking at the rate he delivers , I am not really sure how he manages. I was also told it is more do with the movie industry in india which churns out close to 1000 movies a year and that is a loot. Just my tots. Please dont bash me . I didn't mean any harm ! The problem is: I am not able to find Rahman's SIGNATURE in Pappu Can't Dance of JTJYN and Hawa, sun Hawa of Ada. Pappu got hit like anything and it feels great that our man did a Muqqala or a hello doctor again. Hawa, sun hawa is so calm and cool, so soothing, subtle like Water songs, it is a pleasure to listen to it. In rest of the songs of these two albums, I could find the telltale ARR effect, but not in these two songs. I feel that these songs could have been as well composed by anyone else. No, not copy, no inspiration, no nothing. Just a genre, a level, just that others have given songs of that type in the past. If I am still not clear, you listen to first 1 second of Tu Hi Rey, and you can tell it it ARR's. No, not memory, but the effect, the sound, the level. Nobody but ARR could have created it. Nobody could in last 10 years, even with inspiration from ARR. I have listened these two songs many times, still, I could not identify that ARR effect in these two. Could anyone help me here. Which part of Pappu and Hawa hold the telltale Signature that ARR is known for and that no one else could create so far? -- V

[arr] Singers count
Which singer ( female / male ) has sung the maximum number of songs under ARR's Music direction ? Is it Chinmayi / ARR himself by any chance ?
