imagine if there is an issue that completely stumps them they may ask

The OS and application are the same no matter if installed on server
hardware directly or virtual, installed on Hyper-V or VMware.

Our test ITSM 7.6 system is on Hyper-V and production is on VMware ESX
(the prod db server is physical though). Users access ITSM by
connecting to the Mid-Tier server with their web browser. The same is
true for using the Windows User Tool and Developer Studio, we just
connect to the application server instead. It works very well.

There is a quote from the 7.6.03 beta I see come up occasionally
regarding the speed of the first ITSM Preconfigured Suite Stack
Installer. That performance (installed in less than an hour) was
experienced on a single Hyper-V / Windows 2008 R2 server (app/db/web)
that was underpowered for I was asking of it. Granted that was for
installing and not under user load, the point being there really is no
functional difference between hardware or virtual.

Hope that helps,
Jason

Re: Using DSO to sync two AR Servers

2011-03-14 Thread Robert Molenda
It truly depends upon the complete requirements. I've used DSO for data
replication (foundation) as well as ticketing replication quite successfully
in near time synch.

As you might imagine, to circumvent a DSO Overload - I implemented a
queuing mechanism because of what I term ticket stabilization immediately
after submit. As you can think, a ticket gets Created, then many Updates
occur to said ticket, and if simply implemented as a DSO Operation, that
same ticket will get transferred multiple times, thus we build in a queue
and waited about 5 minutes (configurable based upon ticket priority) prior
to sending to the remote servers. We were keeping 3 global servers in
synch...

If you are using the remote server more as a reporting or DR type server -
and NO ticket entry/update will be performed (unless DR is in effect) - then
utilize other methods of sync - such as RRR / Database Replication (is this
Oracle, SQL, etc?)...

If this is a Live / Live setup as was mine - DSO certainly worked like a
champ.

 Hi,

When you need 2-way synchronization, I would go for DSO or database
 replication of some kind.

  Vikram,
I worked at a company that used DSO for exactly what you are discussing,
used to archive things off of production to a reporting server, and make
that reporting server 'real time'it was a good solution for us at the
time, but looking back, I wouldn't do it again. The DSO engine is NOT
intended for data replication, as others have mentioned...it's really
intended for follow the sun operations, as such its throughput is
  relatively
slow for the task you are looking to do. We are embarking on a similar
initiative at my current company and we are opting to go with db
replication. Replication comes with its own set of baggage, but I
 believe
  that baggage is manageable.

Subject: Using DSO to sync two AR Servers

  Hi listers,

  Greetings,

I have a new challenge thrown at me.. now the performance of the system
 is
good enough (if you remember my tiring question about ARS performance and
huge queries) now I have been asked to find a way to keep 2 application
servers in sync at real time. And what I could think of is to introduce
  DSO
to into the picture. So here it goes:

  1) Is it best to use DSO to keep 2 Application servers in sync all real
  time.
  2) Both the application servers are replicas of each other but
  geographically located.
  3) The ARS application is completely customized with 350+ forms to be
  managed in sync.
  4) Also DSO is to be used to archive data from one of the servers into
 the
other which will be used as just an read only reporting server.
  5) Both the servers are ARS 5.0.1 :)

So I would really appreciate if you can help me through this as well as
  you
  did in my previous endavour.

  My questions :

  1) Is it reliabe to use DSO in this big context?
  2) What all factors do I have to keep my eyes on while doing this?
  3) What is the performance hit that if at all one can expect?
  4) Any specific setting that can be implemented to keep the performance
  up?

I guess this is a nice learing experience for someone like me and would
  like
any help possible from you guys.

  Thanks in advance

  Regards,
  Vikram.

Rich-text formatting in data fields
You can add rich-text formatting (RTF) to character fields in browsers so that
users
can make changes to the format of text in a character field. For example, a user
might want to italicize or center text.

Additionally, you can allow users to add an image to a field with RTF by

 Hi listers,

 Greetings,

I have a new challenge thrown at me.. now the performance of the system is
good enough (if you remember my tiring question about ARS performance and
huge queries) now I have been asked to find a way to keep 2 application
servers in sync at real time. And what I could think of is to introduce DSO
to into the picture. So here it goes:

 1) Is it best to use DSO to keep 2 Application servers in sync all real
 time.
 2) Both the application servers are replicas of each other but
 geographically located.
 3) The ARS application is completely customized with 350+ forms to be
 managed in sync.
 4) Also DSO is to be used to archive data from one of the servers into the
other which will be used as just an read only reporting server.
 5) Both the servers are ARS 5.0.1 :)

So I would really appreciate if you can help me through this as well as you
 did in my previous endavour.

 My questions :

 1) Is it reliabe to use DSO in this big context?
 2) What all factors do I have to keep my eyes on while doing this?
 3) What is the performance hit that if at all one can expect?
 4) Any specific setting that can be implemented to keep the performance up?

I guess this is a nice learing experience for someone like me and would
 like
any help possible from you guys.

 Thanks in advance

Re: Issue with a report

Christie,

Few things you may want to check,

   - Try an advanced search on the form with the qualification you are
trying to use. If it is retrieving the result, probably there would not be a
   problem with your qualification
   - Try removing the addition of seconds to your date/time and check if you
   get the results

 Christie,

I’m wondering if this could be a valid qualification:

 'Submit Date' = $Start Date$

That means `Submit Date` would be later as the `Start Date`, but Submit
Date in the most cases is the earliest Timestamp as it was set when you
submitted the record (eg. Click on the Save button)

There are no errors in Crystal Reports or the User Tool when I try the

that if I run the report with any quals it works but if I add '3'=1/1/11

Mary,

I think Jason hit the nail on the head. Just remember:
Server Side Table Field + Filter Guide table looping = Phasing Issues
(considerations at least).

When using a table field on the server side (i.e. in a filter), it doesn't
need to be refreshed, it will always have the current data (within the
context of phasing of course).

Hopefully that point you in the right direction. :-)

FYI undocumented feature / quirk - Request ID (field 1) of length 1 means length is 15 and no zero fill

2011-03-14 Thread Ben Chernys
Hi Folks,

Just discovered a case where a request id (field '1') had a database length
of 1 - one of the Task Template schemas in ITSM 7.6. This is valid and
means that the length is 15 and there is no leading zero fill. The old
Admin tool had a nice error message when setting a field 1 to say 2 bytes.
I can certainly find nowhere that this is documented including all .h files.
The doc says a field id 1 must be between 5 and 15 bytes long and mentions
nothing about the effect of setting it to 1.

Doc bug?

Re: FYI undocumented feature / quirk - Request ID (field 1) of length 1 means length is 15 and no zero fill

2011-03-14 Thread Mueller, Doug
Ben,

This has been a feature of the system for quite a while now. 7.5 most
definitely, 7.0 I think so, before that,
I am not sure.

I did a quick search in the on-line documentation and found a section of the
document titled

Working with the Request ID field

This section clearly calls out the possibility of setting this field to a
length of 1 to achieve the affect you are
commenting on.

I do have to agree however that in the section

Core Fields

where each of the core fields is described, it does not include the extra line
or two describing the affect of
setting the length to 1. So, that is a good doc bug/enhancement you can submit.

I didn't look further at other places to see if it does or does not discuss
this topic or even whether it is
appropriate for that discussion in other areas.

But, the key is that the capability exists to control the ID and get no leading
0s if that is what you want. It
does mean that sorting by the Request ID is no longer in clean order because
the request ID is a character
field and without leading 0s things do not sort numerically correctly as the
number of characters in the
value changes. But it is your choice.

Note: No lead 0's can work with a prefix as well. The prefix will be present
but no lead 0s between the prefix
and the Request ID number.

 Hi Folks,

Just discovered a case where a request id (field '1') had a database
length of 1 - one of the Task Template schemas in ITSM 7.6. This is valid
and means that the length is 15 and there is no leading zero fill. The
old Admin tool had a nice error message when setting a field 1 to say 2

View Forms

2011-03-14 Thread Kemes, Lisa
I recently updated a view on the database with an extra field and I would like
to add this field to my View Form. When I right click on my form I get the

Are View Forms sort of locked out if you update your view? Do I have to create
a new view? (I did and I was able to include my new field), but I would like
to add this field to my already existing view.

Line Feed and Carriage Return in ARS

Hi there,

I'm transfering data to our partner via a Web Service. There is
WebMethods middleware on their side. While ARS has no problems
processing any kind of line breaks coming from them, they can't
process ours. What can I do to explicitly tell ARS to use a Line Feed

Rich-text formatting in data fields
You can add rich-text formatting (RTF) to character fields in browsers so that
users
can make changes to the format of text in a character field. For example, a user
might want to italicize or center text.

Additionally, you can allow users to add an image to a field with RTF by

You updated the view and then opened the form to add the field? The list of
fields able to be added is generated when the form is opened in the Admin tool.

Another possibility is you are using a type of field that ARS does not work
with.

The clause ('Assigned Person' != Mark Brittain) will not use an index since
it is a not equal, so the only Index you could use is one on Status. I was
told (a long time ago) it is better to use = instead of (supposedly = helps
the database use an index).

Can you look and see when the last time that the index on Status was analyzed?

First, about why your search is not working as you think it should have.

NULL is a strange beast in databases. It is a value. A very special value
that means there is no value. The
only way to find things that have this special no value value is to
explicitly look for it. No value does not
match a != comparison.

This is why you have to explicitly check for it in your qualification to find
things that are unassigned.

Now, about indexing. It actually is not the NULL test that is causing the
table scan. If you have a field
indexed and you search for NULL, you will use the index.

The thing that is causing the table scan is the != Mark Brittain clause. A
!= will cause the system to
perform a table scan as there is nothing to index on.

To find all the unassigned records using the index, just use the clause

'Assigned Person' = $NULL$

This will use the index on Assigned Person and it will find all unassigned
records.

I am not sure what the != Mark Brittain clause is for if you are looking for
unassigned records. That will
find ASSIGNED records that are not assigned to Mark. So, that search is really
looking for all records
not assigned to anyone (the NULL clause) and those not assigned to Mark. If
you can remove the != Mark
from your criteria, you will find things much more efficient.

Now, all this is assuming you don't qualify on Status too. If there is an
index on Status, it should help with
the search and that index can be used. However, the algorithm for determining
whether to use an index may
be determining that there is a large percentage match in the table so it
defaults to a table scan rather than
trying to use the index on Status.

I hope this helps,

Doug Mueller

Re: Discovery Tools

2011-03-14 Thread Pierson, Shawn
Depending on how you seek to integrate it can be easy or simple. For example,
if you have an external API or web service that you need to integrate with, it
will be a little more challenging than having AIE read values from tables in
databases.

For client PCs, we have LANDesk and pulling in the discovery data from there is
pretty simple, with the only gotcha being that the data needs normalized before
you can really use it. What I mean by that is that some applications (for
example, Winzip) show up with different manufacturers and different versions
that don't quite match. The CMDB provides you with a means to do this, but I
did it via SQL so that people could use the data directly in LANDesk in
addition to Remedy.

On the server side, you care about completely different things, so it does make
sense to use a different discovery tool. We already had one in house called
ECM. I was able to pull data directly from the DB here as well, but it
required a little more work and a lot more conditions in my SQL to make sure
the data was clean.

I just completed the ADDM class last week, and we are looking to implement that
in the coming months. It looks pretty cool and if it can do what BMC says, it
will help create a lot of the relationships in the CMDB, which is always the
greatest weakness of any discovery tool I've seen. Finding what software is
installed on a server is pretty trivial. Crawling web.xml files on a server to
look for database information then matching that discovered application with
its database and creating that relationship in the CMDB is a little more tricky.

Another thing to consider is that you need to clearly define the requirements.
BMC focuses extensively on the CMDB side in their marketing, but an important
thing to consider is the Asset Management side. Yes, it's very useful to build
that web of relationships for support personnel, but it's also vital for you to
be able to tell what applications are installed on what machine, then tie that
back to a software contract to know whether you are in compliance or not and
even if you can stop paying maintenance on some applications and retire them.
I would argue that from a corporate standpoint, Asset Management is
tremendously more important than Configuration Management, so your best bet is
to focus on tools that help your organization be aware of their install base
and licensing.

Hi Doug,

Great explanation and I appreciate the time taken to reply to the issue. On

Question about NULL

2011-03-14 Thread John Baker
I suspect the key question that hasn't been asked is, what database are you
using?

Getting onto my soap box, Oracle (the last time I checked) is completely
clueless to the meaning of null. ie == NULL as far as Oracle is concerned,
which may have been correct in 1985, but isn't correct now we're trying to map
data (where NULL exists) to tables.

I don't think so MarkI believe the reason you are causing the table scan
is because of the OR, not because of the $NULL$. You may try a compound
index on Status and Assigned Personthis MAY help avoid a table scan, but
you must include the $NULL$ to get those...let me know if a compound index
works for this.

This is correct. I updated the View and then opened the view form to add the
field. It's not greyed out so it lets me choose Fields from MyView but
then it doesn't do anything.

I added a brand new view form and purposely left out the new field. Created
it, then tried to add the new field and it lets me.

Just doesn't let me do this with the already existing View Form that I already
have. I then added another new field to the view and I was able to add this
to my Brand New View form as well.

Looks like my old View form might be corrupted or something. It's pretty

Filter Service Calls data base commits...

2011-03-14 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

I have created a Filter Service that I call from a filter. The problem is
that data seems to be committed to the database even though there is an
ERROR later on in the processing.

A1. Modify Filter in form A: Call Service X

X2. Service Filter: pushes data to form X

A2. Modify Filter in form A: generates ERROR (phase 2)

The data pushed to form X via the Service Filteris commited to the data

Is this as designed???

I was under the impression that everything should be rolled back if you
have a failiure. At least if you refrain from meddling with the filter
phasing, which I have not done...

Any comments?

My understanding is that since you are calling a Service (just like
consuming an external web-service logically) that is an independent
transaction. So an ERROR Trap will need to be constructed, and then service
X_rollback would need to be called in the error handling...

Yes it adds much complication...

Maybe, but the documentation does not say anything about this.

This would both limit and extend the use of servive-calls I guess.

Those functions are set field functions that can be used only in set or push
fields actions..

So create a temp integer field to hold the value of LENGTH(‘Field’) and then
use that temp field in the qualification in an active link that runs in an
order after the first active link..

Hope this helps..

Those functions are set field functions that can be used only in set or push
fields actions..

So create a temp integer field to hold the value of LENGTH(‘Field’) and then
use that temp field in the qualification in an active link that runs in an
order after the first active link..

Hope this helps..

Cheers

I must be being dense, but I’m trying to write an active link that only fires
if a field is more than a certain length. Can’t figure out how to do that.
Know how to trim it and set the length, but not check it in the qualification.
I tried this
LENGTH(‘Field’) 500
But it didn’t like that.

Unfortunately that’s how it is designed.. Those functions are not available at
the Run If level. Functions whose result is not a void but a value are used in
set field / push field kind of operations..

Only KEYWORDS can be used in Run If qualifications directly to be evaluated in
an expression..

Bummer. I was hoping it didn’t have to be a 2 step process. Thanks

Re: View Forms

2011-03-14 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza
It should let you add the new field to the existing view, unless like Fred
pointed out. if that field is a data type that is not supported by the AR
engine.. I have added fields in the past on the fly and have been able to
have my view for read the new field..

If the field is a supported data type, I would check to see if there is an
open known issue with AR system 7.1 Patch 7 or thereabouts with view
forms...

This is correct. I updated the View and then opened the view form to add
the field. It's not greyed out so it lets me choose Fields from MyView
but then it doesn't do anything.

I added a brand new view form and purposely left out the new field. Created
it, then tried to add the new field and it lets me.

Just doesn't let me do this with the already existing View Form that I
already have. I then added another new field to the view and I was able to
add this to my Brand New View form as well.

Looks like my old View form might be corrupted or something. It's pretty
old

You updated the view and then opened the form to add the field? The list of
fields able to be added is generated when the form is opened in the Admin
tool.

Another possibility is you are using a type of field that ARS does not work
with.

I recently updated a view on the database with an extra field and I would
like to add this field to my View Form. When I right click on my form I get
the option to select a field from my view, but when I click on it nothing
comes up.

Are View Forms sort of locked out if you update your view? Do I have to
create a new view? (I did and I was able to include my new field), but I
would like to add this field to my already existing view.

Re: Filter Service Calls data base commits...

2011-03-14 Thread Jason Miller
I have the same trouble with the error handler feature. I was so excited
when it was introduced but then realized it wasn't exactly what I wanted it
to be once I used it. It seems you still need many filter qualifications to
account for all of the different situations that will cause an error in your
process.

For example we have a custom db table where records are inserted and an
escalation touches the new records using a Vendor Form to bring them into
ARS processing (filter pushes them to a Help Desk ticket). There are a
number of errors that can occur: invalid CTI combination, invalid Region,
Site, Department combination, missing Region, Site or Department, etc. When
this happens we want a ticket created to review and correct the record so it
can be processed for the customer. When we initially created the process we
though if the push fields fails say because a require field on the
destination form is missing then our error handler field would create the
ticket to research the failure and processing would stop after that. This
statement is where our idea fell flat:

Pg 165 of 7.5 Workflow Objects Guide

When all the If actions of the error handling filter complete successfully,
*the error is considered handled*, the error information and keyword is
cleared, and the filter in which the error occurred continues execution with
the next action. If another error occurs during the execution of the filter,
the error handler is executed again.

In our initial development attempt would end up with a ticket to research
the error and a ticket missing the required field(s) (who knew that was
possible, they are required). So then the though was to throw an error in
the error handler after the research ticket push fields but then entire
transaction rolled back and neither tickets were created just as if we
didn't even have the EH.

We ended up having our push fields filter still evaluate that all of the
requirements were met in the qualification. At the very end if the source
record status is still New (would have been set to Processed if ticket
was created) then we assume an error has occurred, set the status to Error
and create a ticket to research.

Another similar process on a web service integration form varies a little
bit by throwing an error if a pre-check fails (CTI, RSD, item # not in the
catalog). The error handler is called and sets the status field to
Error. The pre-checks continue since the error was handled and
concatenates the $ERRMSG$ and $ERRNO$ to a character field that is returned
in web service. All of the filters that do push fields do not fire if
'Status' = Error.

In both situations we need to figure out all of the possible points of
failure ahead of time. If an unexpected error is encountered then our error
handling actions fall apart.

I see value in the way it is designed but it would be nice if there was an
option to terminate normal processing if an EH filter is called and only
process the filters triggered by the EH. Sometimes you want to take a
special action due to an error but you still want a hard error that stops
the original processing.

 Hi Robert,

Maybe, but the documentation does not say anything about this.

This would both limit and extend the use of servive-calls I guess.

In my case, when my service picks the next of several counters, it will
create holes in my counter-series. I guess I have to redesign...

My understanding is that since you are calling a Service (just like
consuming an external web-service logically) that is an independent
transaction. So an ERROR Trap will need to be constructed, and then
 service
X_rollback would need to be called in the error handling...

 Yes it adds much complication...

 Hi,

I have created a Filter Service that I call from a filter. The problem
 is
that data seems to be committed to the database even though there is an
ERROR later on in the processing.
