ARUtilities may be a reasonable option if you do not want to pay high
prices. ARUtilities is pretty cheap compared to some of the others, and
may have a lot of functionality that you could use. In addition,
ARUtilities is updated on a regular basis to offer as much functionality
as possible (a new version is coming soon).

Have a look at http://www.arutilities.com and download a free fully
functional evaluation copy.

Hope this helps.

Maybe ARSmarts can do what you want. If you have not looked at the tool
yet, just register here (http://www.arsmarts.com/register.htm), and you

ARSmarts v2.1 : batch definition export, search in XRef, and much more......

2009-10-07 Thread support

Dear List,

We are pleased to announce the release of version 2.1 of ARSmarts.

The main new functionalities in ARSmarts v2.1 are:

_*Export definitions in batch*_: using the new "batch mode" of ARSmarts
v2.1, you can create .def files from any number of ARS servers in one
single operation. You also have the possibility to use the "batch mode"
from the command line. Typically the kind of task that can be run at night.

_*Export Search, Compare and Browser results*_: run a Compare operation,
or a Search, then export the resulting list to a .def file.

_*Save/reload ARSmarts Search parameters*_: save the parameters of the
Searches that you often use, and run these Searches in one click.

_*Search Fields XRef*_: run a Search within the workflow objects
XReferencing selected fields. This functionality can be used to make an
ARS application "Submitter Mode: Locked compatible", to find the
workflow that puts a Field (say Status) to a given value, even if there
are multi-level joins on the Form (cfr CMDB),

Want to know more? Register here http://www.arsmarts.com/register.htm

Well...

You would expect removing a field form base, to remove the field from the
base form, if you are working in base-development, but still retain it in
the overlay.

I tried this. It was OK to remove it via DevStudio from the Base-form, and
it is removed from both Base and Overlay (with overlaid view)...

I have not done logging, so I do not know if DevStudio updated both the
base and the overlay form.

  Kais,

As with all situations…a ‘delete’ of a field removes the field from the
table. Due to the fact that Overlays retain the base structure (at
least,
that’s my understanding)…I wouldn’t expect you to be able to delete the
field…but you should be able to overlay the view and remove the field
from
the view, thus leaving it still ‘existing’, but without being visible to
your users.

Hello John,

The next version of ARSmarts will support Overlay, and also bring
additional navigation/search/comparison features in relation with
the Overlay.  We are considering different ways to present things,
and using __o is one of the options.  The question is if it would be
clear for everybody.

I think it would be part of the learning curve when starting to use

The Developer Studio hides it (the fact that there is an __o form once you overlay the original), while it is VERY obvious in Migrator, and has been since day one. You will also see all of the __o forms in the arschema table, where they get their own unique schema ids.

- access all the fields (even hidden fields, even fields in no View,
...)
- access to all the Forms (even hidden, ...)
- search, create, modify records one by one or in bulk
- connect to multiple servers in one session, copy an paste records
-

The goal of the ARSmarts Data Manager is to provide to the
"super-users" or to the "managers" of ARSystem applications (ITSM
and other) a way to get to their data quickly and efficiently,
without all the visual bells and whistles.

This tool is currently under development, and a brief demo was given
at the WWRUG11.  We are currently working on it and hope to release
a version in Q2 2012.

Hope this helps.

Hi listers

Concerning the enhanced search, I suggest you have a look at our tool.

It does all what Jose said about that and even more.

You can download an evaluation version for free from www.arsmarts.com

Additionally, we just started the 2.8 beta version this morning.

ARSmarts 2.8 has full support of overlays.

** Guillaume,

I know that Remedy development is very different from structured or object
programming. But my point is about the quality and possibilities of their
development tools.

I will explain in detail what I consider essential:

ONLINE DEBUG:

There is a tool in Remedy that allows you to debug step by step. But it's text
based. I want to log in in debug mode, that executes normally. Set breakpoints
at some filters. When these filters arrive stop execution, see the fields
values at this particular moment, and continue executing filters step by step.
If this can be done by text, Why is it not possible to do through dev studio?

UNITARY TEST:

Configure some actions (like creating a request with some values or call a
service action with some values) and program the expected behavior. So when you
run the unitary test the system checks it. Maintaining a library of unitary
tests on your system and reexecuting them at every change, you get more
control. I do it now, with some very complex situations, but I need to use
SOAPUI to call a web service and get the response, checking it to see if it is
valid.

GRAPHICAL ENHANCEMENTS LIKE BLOCKING OR HIDDING:

Set some elements in a view and group them in layers. Then you can easily hide
a layer, but only when editing. Or you can block a layer, to be sure you can't
select it.

ENFORCEMENT OF BEST PRACTICES:

Have a set of best practices configured (like naming convention) and the system
automatically checks them. So if you brake a best practice the system warms you.

WORK WITH FIELDS NOT IN VIEW:

If you want to reconfigure or change a field that is not present in any view,
then you must add it (where you can't search it from the fieldid, only by the
name) to a view, change it and remove it again from the view.

ENHANCED SEARCH:

I can only search elements from one criteria. And the available criteria is not
enough. If I want to list all filters with some word in the name that are part
of a particular application, this is not possible. If I want to know which
filters are used in a particular form, this is not possible (I can only search
for the primary form, but not shared). I want to list all filters that use a
particular field in the qualification, this is not possible. I have a Remedy
form that feeds from the Remedy's data dictionary that can perform all these
searches.

Under my point of view, the developer studio has the minimum set of feature to
allow developing, but it is far from being a good tool.

Regards,

Jose Huerta

Jose,

I think some of the points you mention are not applicable in the ARS world,
since as you very well know, ARS is not a 3rd generation language like java or
.net.
The general consensus is that ARS is greater than a 4th generation language,
it's either 4.5 or 5th generation.
As a point of reference PL/SQL and T-SQL are 4th generation languages.

Therefore you cannot really compare the developer tool of a of 5th generation
language with the developer tool of a 3rd generation language.
We need to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges to make an objective
and rational comparison.

So... if you are familiar with a 5th generation language's developer tool and
want to compare it with Developer Studio, please go ahead and share your
analysis, the community values them, and hopefully BMC will incorporate new

New version of ARSmarts available: COMPARE ARS APPLICATIONS

2009-03-26 Thread support

Dear List,

A new version of ARSmarts is available on our website. This version is
still regarded as a beta, but as most issues are now fixed, it is very
stable. It is perhaps for some of you the opportunity to have a look at
ARSmarts. Just register here (http://www.arsmarts.com/register.htm),
and you will receive the necessary instructions.

In a nutshell, ARSmarts main functionalities are:
- works off-line from a .def file.
- navigate your workflow, follow cross references, ... (all places where
a menu is used, in a glance...)
- search through your workflow (for all objects using $PROCESS$, setting
the Status to Closed, ...)
- compare .def files (two or more), easy-to-read results in color-coded
window.

- export large applications (like ITSM7) in just one click.

ARSmarts makes AR System experts work more efficiently. It also greatly
improves the quality of their work, as they can be certain to modify
_all_ the necessary objects.

Re: AR Inside with 7.5

2009-04-02 Thread support

Hi Greg,

What exactly are you trying to achieve?
I mean, what is your actual goal?
Generate a paper documentation of your application, or something else?

I'm just trying to see if we can help here.
Unfortunately, no experience with AR Inside and AR7.5, but we could help
in other ways if what you want to achieve can be done with ARSmarts.

Best regards.

Kaïs

Dear list,

The Document functionality of ARSmarts is currently in an advanced phase
of development. We plan a beta program sometime in May.

The Document feature produces an HTML documentation of AR System
objects. It includes the cross-references. It works with cascading
style sheets to allow users to modify the layout, put their logo in the
header, ...

ARS7.5 will be supported.
//
The Document feature will be available from a number of places within
ARSmarts. You will have the possibility to document selected AR System
objects, obviously. You will also have the possibility to document the
result of Search operations, the result of Compare operations, .

We'll post a call for beta testers on the list when the beta program starts.

Best regards.

ARSmarts Documenter beta program started

2009-06-02 Thread support

Dear List,

We are proud to launch the Beta Program for ARSmarts Documenter. You
can _register to the beta program_ at
http://www.arsmarts.com/register.htm . Once registered, you will
receive the password to the download area.

_ARSmarts Documenter_

Using ARSmarts Documenter, you can document any object of your AR System
applications. The ARSmarts Documenter module gives you the possibility
to generate a detailed or an overview HTML documentation for any number
of ARSystem objects.

/Document Search Results, Comparison Results, /

Using the versatility of the *ARSmarts Navigator module* combined with
the power of the *ARSmarts Documenter module* makes the generation of
your project technical documentation an easy task. Indeed, the
Documenter module can be activated from virtually any screen of the
ARSmarts Navigator. This means that you can easily document the result
of a Search operation, of a Compare operation, .

Naturally, you can then edit the documents generated by ARSmarts in your
preferred word processor and make it a personalized document that you
can give to your customer as part of the project deliverables.

Like all other ARSmarts functionalities, the ARSmarts Documenter works
with all AR System applications (ITSM, SRM, custom built, ...).

Don't hesitate to contact us should you need more information.

ARSmarts Documenter beta program: new build available.

2009-06-19 Thread support

Hello List,

To those who were not too keen to join our beta program from the start,
here is a new opportunity. A new build of ARSmarts has now been
released (build 118). This build fixes all issues brought to our
attention so far, meaning that we are confident to have here a rather
stable version. It also brings some minor modifications to the
Documenter feature. More important, the documentation produced by
ARSmarts Documenter now includes a Table of Content.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the testers who
participated to the beta program in the early stages and who provided
feedback.

If you feel like joining the beta program now, you can do so here :
http://www.arsmarts.com/register.htm

Re: Converting MACRO

2009-07-01 Thread support
Or you can use ARSmarts to locate the Active Links containing macro's
and the Filter doing a runmacro.
ARSmarts will also decode the macro's contained in Active Links and
display the in a humanly readable way. Being able to understand what
the macro does makes it easier/possible to replace it by Active Links.

ARSmarts Documenter is now released

2009-07-14 Thread support

Dear List,

We are proud to announce the release of ARSmarts 2.0.0.

Beyond the functionalities that were already present in the previous
version of ARSmarts (*Browse workflow, Search workflow, Compare
applications*), ARSmarts 2.0.0 offers a new module: the Documenter.
*ARSmarts Documenter* produces professional documentation of any AR
System object. This documentation can be used "as is", or given your
company's look and feel.

The combination of our two modules, *ARSmarts Navigator and ARSmarts
Documenter*, makes them even more powerful. Indeed, the Documenter you
can generate documentation from nearly all results of the Navigator.
You just searched your AR System server for key objects, and would like
to document the results? Just click the Document button Even
better: think how easy it could be to *generate the technical
documentation of your project*, using the Compare function of ARSmarts
Navigator combined with ARSmarts Documenter.

new company is added to the Application configuration data? Something
seems to have broken on the server that I am currently working on and
a ready list of such objects would go a long way in finding what is
missing or broken on our server here that causes that group
creation to fail.

I totally agree with Axton: the ERD concept does not really apply to
Remedy.
However, as ARSmarts offers similar functionality to the ITMasters
product, we think we are quite close to an ERD.

It is also correct that an "ERD" of ITSM7x is rather heavy, but we
implemented a number of functionalities that make these graphs more
readable.  Anybody interested should give it a try.  The evaluation
version is free (just register on our website) and we will certainly
appreciate your feedback.

Generating an ERD for Remedy applications is going to be
problematic.  ERDs make some assumptions that don't necessarily
  apply to Remedy applications:
  - Data normalization (apps that operate on a normalized data
model are tricky to write due the tight binding between the UI
and the data model; couple this with the limited capabilities of
accessing referenced data [a join to a join to a join to a
join], and you have a scenario where designing and app with
a normalized data model is difficult and time/cost prohibitive).
  - Referential integrity (through constraints and cascading
operations) is necessary for a true ERD to be reliable in terms
of what it's trying to portray.  These things can be enforced
through filters, to varying degrees of success, but trying to
map what's in your filters to an ERD is probably not feasible,
at least in a systematic way.

There are some things that an ERD is not designed to
represent that Remedy frequently does:
  - push fields (to some other form)
  - set fields (from some other form)
  - value selection through menus

ITMasters used to generate the closest thing to an ERD that
could be represented, but for those of you who have been around
long enough to know what that looked like against the then
current version of Help Desk, it was nearly impossible to read
due to the complexity of the model that was rendered.

Hi everybody!

Sorry for the shameless self-promition, but since it's on-topic... We have a
somwhat different solution to this problem, have a look at our product...
http://www.northcraftanalytics.com

We use one architecture for Dashboards and Analytics. It's Microsoft-based
(not for everyone) so we use Excel, Sharepoint and Integrated Windows
Authentication combined for a seamless interface into Remedy (albeit
Microsoft-based). That way, when you login to windows you have access to our
product through Sharepoint (for the Dashboards) and Excel (for the Ad-hoc
Analytics).

In addition, we have:

655+ pre-calculated metrics
135 Key Performance Indicators
8 Process Areas

I will throw this in... If you're not up for a Microsoft solution - JSS is a
GREAT company. Back in the IT Prophets days, they were very helpful at Avaya
(Thanks John!). Just my 2 cents...

There are plenty of forums about running databases on VMs. It can be possible

Question about ARSmarts Foreign Objects functionality

2013-09-13 Thread Support

Hello List,

We have a question about the Foreign Objects functionality of ARSmarts,
and we would like your input.

_What is the Foreign Objects functionality?

_ In the ARSmarts Show Objects window (where you browse through Forms,
Filters, ...), select a Form. Then you can browse through the Fields,
Filters, Active Links, ... _attached to this Form_. There you also find
the Foreign Objects tab that lists all the objects that interact with
the Form, but _are not attached_ to the Form. Eg: a Filter attached to
Form A and performing a Push Field to Form B is a Foreign Object of Form
B, a Table Field on Form A showing records from Form B will be a Foreign
Object of Form B,

See the screenshots on our website and our User Guide for more details
about Foreign Objects.

_The question:

_As mentioned above, a Filter attached to Form A that does a Push Field
to Form A is _not_ listed in the Foreign Objects of Form A. A Table
Field on Form A that lists records from Form A is _not_ listed in the
Foreign Objects of Form A.

One of our users is asking that these objects would be included in the
list of Foreign Objects.

What do you think?

Best regards,

Kaïs.

Hello Paul,

You can also check ARSmarts (www.arsmarts.com). What you ask is really
the basis of the basics in terms of finding your way in workflow, and
your question will be answered in ARSmarts in 3 to 4 clicks. ARSmarts
will also show you the Foreign Objects (objects that interact with a
Form but are not attached to it, e.g.: Push Field actions, table fields,

I use these tools frequently and in my experience, they all work
quite well:

·Working list

·Relationships

·Searching

*BUT*, Dev Studio is lacking in at least one glaringly obvious area
(well, to me). That is the ability to sort by more than one option
in a list.

In the Remedy Admin Tool, one could click the column header of let’s
say list of filters. The list would be sorted. Then click another
column and it will apply the 2^nd sort while retaining the first one.
Similar to performing a custom sort in Excel. Like sort by Column A
and then Column B.

Hi Paul,

The search feature isn't really the best for getting a list of
filters that relate to a form. The best way to do that is with a
working list. If you create a "view by form" working list and select
the forms you want, then use the icon in the top right of that screen
to "view by type", that is probably the closest thing you are looking
for. The "view by type" screen will allow you to sort by all the
normal options like "execute on" and "enabled"

The search is good for finding embedded strings within code. Things
like specific error messages or run process commands.

Show relationships is also good for quickly finding all kinds of
workflow that relate to a specific field or other objects.

Audit and "Ignore Filters" option.

2013-10-06 Thread Support

Hello List,

I was wondering if the Ignore Filters option respects the auditing
settings.

In other words, if I have a Form with a field that is audited, and if I
then do an Import of data and that I flag the Ignore Filters option,
will the field be audited?

Thanks,

Kaïs.

The tool make a photograph of the application ARS remedy using Api remedy.
This picture takes on average 15 minutes; only in this moment ARSurf connects to
the application server remedy.
During this fifteen-minutes connection, on the machine where the exe Arsuf is
launched, a proprietary DB is created.
All searches explained on the user manual ARSurf are carried out offline on the
proprietary DB ARSurf.
No search is launched online on the application server remedy.
Concerning the compatibility we confirm our product has been checked and tested
on server remedy 7.5, 7.6 and 8.1.
Altought one-year test, it is likely that there will be few bugs but they
absolutely don't interfere with the application server remedy.

Export definitions to CSV files with ARSmarts 2.8.1

2012-06-07 Thread Support

Hello List,

I thought you'd be interested to hear about the latest version of
ARSmarts and its new interesting feature.

The new version is poetically numbered 2.8.1. You will notice that it
is a minor version (after 2.8.0 that implemented Overlay support), so
you might think that there it's only bug fixing Well, you'd be
wrong. There is one new feature that will hopefully get you interested:
_the possibility to export ARS definitions to CSV files._ You can have
a look at chapter 4.11 of the User Guide (p47) for more detailed
information.

Clearly, this is "version 1" of this feature, and we will be asking for
your input real soon to design its next version.

Export definitions to CSV file

2012-06-19 Thread Support

Hello List,

At ARSmarts, we are currently developing an « Export definitions to
CSV » functionality. In version 2.8.1 (just released), we implemented a
basic version of this functionality that allows to export the content of
a grid to a CSV file. This is a start, but certainly not enough.

Now, here is where we can use your input: in order to build a really
useful functionality, we need to know what objects you would like to see
in the CSV file? What properties of what objects ...? In what
situations would you like to use CSV documentation? In short: what are
your needs.

Looking forward to hear from you all.

Hi Joe,

Most managers and non-technical people do not read XML.

Also, we are thinking of exporting in CSV format such things as the
result of a Search or the result of a Compare operation.

Finally, we would like to offer the possibility to export only some
properties of the objects.

Maybe an example will clear things up: a customer wanted a list of all
the notifications sent by a Remedy application, and wanted to know in
what circumstances these notifications were sent. We produced a CSV
file, with the name of the Filters, the Run If condition, and the
Notification details.

Re: Export definitions to CSV file

Thanks for your input.

With ARSmarts, we brought it so far that you can:
- compare Overlay with Overlaid
- produce a detailed documentation of the comparison result in HTML
- produce a basic report in CSV (Object Name, Type of difference)

The next question is: what else would be useful ? What columns would
you like to see in the CSV doc?

Kais,
Got you.. I should have guessed you were aiming it at management. But
since meta data reports are generally more useful to developers, I was
wondering what value it would serve a developer who may already be
capable of reading XML.
In reference to the new version, assuming that I was management
incapable of reading XML, I might have found a report of overlaid
objects compared with its original useful to see what may have been
changed on a excel sheet.. This actually would be useful to a
developer too as once an object has been overlaid and changes have
been made, even a developer looses visibility of the original object –
unless he deletes the overlay... This is my most spontaneous thought
that came to mind given your explanation on grounds you wish to cover...

Cheers

Off the top of my head maybe the form information, such as indexes,
fields in results list and the fields itself (Label, DB Name, data

reporting and need to provide a data dictionary of some sort.

Kais,

DETAIL QUESTION (to Joe, Saby, and everybody else ;-) ):

Don't you feel the need to select the properties that will be documented

Granularity?

I wonder why BMC developers didn’t think that would be a useful

I wonder if there is a plugin available (just like the unsupported one
for creating overlay of multiple views) where you could retrieve the
original object from the overlaid.. That would be a so nice to have
feature on the Dev Studio itself. It would save so much time
especially when developers change hands or if customization has been
more than 5% of all the objects when its almost impossible to remember
what was changed..

I'm no expert but I'm sure it comes down to dollars. They want
to know how much you make and how much you can make for them.
That, coupled with how many certified people you have and
probably other financially driven factors will probably

demonstrate your own value as a potential partner.

Seems that I was completely wrong. I'm trying to contact
the Senior Channel Manager at Spain, asking her about how

have the partners list full and don't want new ones. This
is frustrating. I'm selling their product. I'm convincing
their clients to continue on the Remedy way. I'm an active
member of the Remedy's community. I conforming a team of
developers. And, What I obtain? Nothing.

Sincerely I think that my Remedy team is outstanding. We
are creating what other partners previously said to the
client that was impossible. In fact one big client decided
to move out from Remedy after believing that the product
was a completely failure, and this was only because the
deployment made by other partner. We rescued this client,
re-deploying it, customizing it to their needs and
obtaining a good feedback. So... I'm not asking about What
needs to be done to become a partner, but, what needs to
be done to obtain a telephone call from the channel
