Season's Greetings from Asbury Park:
SNOW EMERGENCY UPDATE CANCELLATIONS BELOW:
THE FOLLOWING IS A LETTER FROM MAYOR JOHNSON:
Good morning!

We were out till 4am this morning and are just getting up again to go out
to start again. You are absolutely right, it has not been easy. We had 30+
inches of snow on the ground with snow drifts that cut our effective
plowing power in half. The depth and weigh of the snow made it necessary for
tractors to hit first then followed by snow plows. I know as my own street
was just done late yesterday. To make matters worse, we have cars that
jumped out on the road igorning the state of emergency that shut down the
plowing operations several times. This cost us more than a day to deal with.
Several times I myself had to direct traffic on Asbury Avenue, Main Street
and
several side streets where cars in traffic had blocked in our snow plows
from all sides. The State and County just arrived yesterday (over the night
Tuesday into Wednesday) as did our towing companies which hampered our
ability to get cars out of the way so that we could plow Main Street.

These past few days have been an absolute challenge every step of the way,
but thank goodness our crews never gave up and kept going. I wish every
street could have been first, but that was not the case. This was not a
matter of not being out there. It was a matter of where do you start and how
to work your way through traffic, abandon cars, medical emergencies to get
to every street. Our crews have been out there 24/7 since early Sunday
afternoon and will continue to do so until we reach everyone.

With regard to summons, it is absolutely necessary as we now have cars
parked on the snow routes blocking traffic and preventing the next step of
plowing (widening the roads and getting down to the blacktop). People have
parked their cars angled into the traffic and plowing lanes and that can't
happen. Giving summons is never good, but giving summons with no warning is
even worse.

Our messages to the community have been very clear and present. Our 911
Reverse, Website, Facebook and Greetings from Asbury Park have been constant
and will continue to be forth coming. I value the list as a great
resource, while I have not had time to thoroughly read each message I have had
 the
opportunity to scroll through some messages - I have seen both helpful
(Amy's maps and information sharing), some very justified frustration and
concerns and then some just outright nasty posts. I look forward to reading
through all of them once the streets are cleared. That has to be my
continued priority.

Ed

Season's Greetings from Asbury Park:
SNOW EMERGENCY UPDATE CORRECTION:
I accidentally sent out earlier an email response that the Mayor copied
to me. Below is the correct message from Mayor Johnson. I hope that this
did not cause any further problems:
SNOW EMERGENCY UPDATE Dec 30 - 9AM:

Statement by Mayor Ed Johnson Regarding Snow Removal
At 4 a.m., Asbury Park completed its third night of plowing operations.
While our daytime efforts will continue, the overnight efforts have proved
much more effective as there was virtually no traffic during those hours.
Our efforts have resulted in providing access to almost every street in the
city and widening access to major avenues. There are a few areas where we
will be working this morning and throughout the day to finally plow and/or
provide greater access. We expect to provide full access throughout the
city by the end of today. To assist us in these efforts, I am asking
residents to avoid parking along snow banks on plowed streets (outside of
normal
parking spots along the curb or driveways). Our crews are working to widen
these streets and can use your assistance in helping them get to get this
done.
As the snow melts, it will create icy conditions at sundown and overnight.
If you must drive, please use extreme caution as there are pedestrians
everywhere. Our snow response efforts have been focused on public safety
first and we ask for your help to keep everyone safe. We also ask for your
help in identifying and clearing space around fire hydrants in your
neighborhood. In the event of a fire emergency, this will greatly help to
increase
the response time needed.
Since the snowstorm hit us last Sunday, our crews and citizens have put
forth great effort helping one another and getting some semblance of access
and mobility back in the city. We have made much progress, but there is
still much more work to do. We will continue until it is done.
Mayor Ed Johnson

[AsburyPark] walking to CH and back

2010-12-30 Thread asburysteve
from asbury tower:

couldn't use the boardwalk, so i had to walk on kingsley. thank the lord
i didn't fall; i used the wand from my shark vacuum as a cane

kingsley is not good.one lane of traffic.possibly 2 lanes in
spots. i walked to 6th ave to ocean. 6th was all pavement for that one
block.

ocean ave is all pavementno place to park tho, and the meters are
buried.

the was one narrow path up to the boards by mc cloones. then i turned left
to get into the arcade...(since i work in there). in front of me was a 3ft
pile of snow. but there was a path into the arcade.

my 4 block walk seemed like i was walking foreverthen i had to come
back eventually.

aqua was opened, as was robert legere...but, no customers in sight.

i didn't really expect to see any..

now i need a nice nap. haha if the phone doesn't stop ringing.

not even sure if anyone will open tomorrow...prob aqua will for NYE.

[AsburyPark] Re: iraq or ap

2010-12-30 Thread fancypaaantz
Ok, I have to say again. Yes, this is not Iraq, nor are we trapped in a mine or
suffering after Hurricane Katrina BUT just because our situation is not a
million other horrible situations that are obviously much worse is irrelevant.
The issue is simple. There is no comparing it to any other disaster or other
situation. We had a snow storm. We live in a state that gets snow storms
periodically. We have a right to ask why our town cannot handle snow removal
without thinking Well, I wonder why my street is a mess four days after a
storm, but I shouldn't complain because at least I am not in a refugee camp in
central Africa. I drove today. AP is MUCH worse than any place else I drove. I
walked around with the dog a bit too and it was FREAKING INSANE. People walking
like zombies down the center of streets that are still snow covered on day 4.
Come on. Yes, this is not the black plague or a nuclear disaster, but that
doesn't mean we shouldn't complain about why our town can't seem to remove
snow. If we were hit by a giant tidal wave, I wouldn't ask the mayor why my
street was a mess, but this is snow. And snow that was from a storm that was
predicted DAYS in advance. Why was there no plan? Where were the plows?

I have an idea. People at the Jersey shore think we don't get snow. So, when we
do, it is a big shock. So, here is my advice. The next time the Weather channel
says that we may get a big snow storm, get the powers that be together in a
room and come up with an action plan before the first flake. And don't treat
the residents of AP like they don't matter.

Dave - the snow removal response sucked. It borders on criminal. I don't know
who is to blame but the results are unacceptable. You and I in the private
sector measure things that way. The results. Late to the game. Not only AP and
other Shore towns, but NYC as well. Disgraceful and as I said, bordering on
criminal.

This is not Iraq.

So, here is my advice. The next time the Weather channel says that we may get
a big snow storm, get the powers that be together in a room and come up with
an action plan before the first flake. And don't treat the residents of AP
 like they don't matter.

I will follow my advice. The next time I hear there is going to be significant
snow I am getting out of AP and the Shore. I will never be subject to this
imcompetence again.
