 Hi

Im thinking about buying an SB3 but wondered about the levels of jitter
that may be introduced by the length of ethernet cable, 20 feet in my

I intend to use my Belcanto dac2 into a Valve amp. Ive had fantastic
results using my pc and foobar2000 with coaxial digital out from
soundcard to dac. How far do you feel the sound will be compromised by
 using the lan?
 Jack.

Most people use the wireless version of the SB so as to avoid the
inconvenience of running long ethernet cables everywhere. For the same
reason as stated above, there is no jitter induced by this, and the
transmission is bit perfect due to TCP/IP error correction (unless your
network doesn't have enough bandwidth, in which case the sound will stop
or stutter - but it won't be a subtle effect like jitter). Think of it
just as a way of copying the audio files stored on your computer over
to the SB - it has nothing directly to do with audio, and the copies
are perfect essentially always, just as any file copy over a computer
network is.

By the way, there will of course be some jitter induced during the
transmission from the SB to the DAC, but jitter at the SB digital out
has been measured and is very low (almost certainly much lower than the
jitter induced by a soundcard out going through 20 feet of digital audio
cable).

Have on order a dac for mine, a Digital Storm DO2, my system is for

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Lite Audio DAC-60 thinking about getting one..

2006-05-18 Thread DerekDenyer

crooner Wrote:
It's a great DAC for the price. I recommend it!

I have had my lite dac60 for a few weeks now (shipped direct from HK to
the UK) and I must say I'm impressed with the build and the sound. With
no UK dealership service may be a problem, but then it is half the
price of other comprable offerings.

It's a little hard to do direct A/B comparisons with a naked SB3 as I
found SB's analog volume to be quite low, making it hard to do A/B's
with a CD too. As best I could I compared the Dac60 to the SB and must
say there was much more atmoshpere with the dac60, and I did (sorry
cliche warning) find myself tapping feet and fingers.

Do you leave yours on all the time?, if so what's the expected lifetime
of the tubes?.

Regards, Derek

I'd go along with that Azur comparison - maybe even a bit higher up the
food chain for older CDP's.

2006-05-18 Thread davidcotton

I'd been using an all marantz combo (66 KI SIG amp and matching 63 KI
SIG cdp)quite happily, but the amount of discs overtaking my room was
starting to irritate me, which is why I went for the sb3/qnap combo.

I've been using an m-audio superdac between amp and sb3 and just sent
that off to have some mods done to that (all the basic op amps and
circuit board upgraded basically!). I'd love to send off the sb3 to
somewhere like bolder, but not sure of the shipping costs from here in
the uk, plus theres something like an 8 week waiting list anyway!

Cheers...

I prefered the look of the 'N' (natural) enclosures to the 'B' (black

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Signle FLAC/APE/CUE

2006-05-18 Thread lovemov

While waiting my hardware to arrive, I'd start to play with the
slimserver.
90% of my music are classical, so I prefer than to be a single image
file, which also plays fine in foolbar or winamp. I have been reading
the forum, looks like there is lots of problems with cue file handling.

I really want to keep the existing images, and still have the flexibity
to pick tracks easily within the image. What's my best solution? I don't
mind doing some bit of covertion jobs.

(sorry for the double posts. no idea how to move between forums. people
suggested I might get more replys in audiophile forum for this question)

You mentioned that you're going to start playing with Slimserver. Have
you installed it? Are you having any problems with your cue files?
Slimserver is supposed to support them--it should all work fine. Let
us know if you have any problems then we can start troubleshooting real
problems rather than hypothetical problems.

BTW, reread my post...didn't mean to sound short with you. Just that a
lot of questions can be easily answered by just trying it!
Slimserver's a free and easy install, and don't forget to try out
softsqueeze. Even if your box doesn't arrive before the weekend you
can have a good old time this weekend just playing with those two
pieces of software.

Hi,
I am glad you like yours. Mine keeps getting better and better. I
upgraded the coupling caps with Sonicaps and added a pair of Amperex
6DJ8 Bugle Boys from the early 1960s. Sound quality improved
considerably.

I usually power mine up two hours before any serious listening. I only
left it running 24 hours at the beginning to break it in.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Tube Pre-Amp or MF X-10 Tube Buffer?

2006-05-18 Thread Horizons

I find it interesting how many people buy the Benchmark due to its razor
sharp resolution and then spend lots of cash to tame it down. I
auditioned several dacs and the Benchmark has a great transparency but
left me cold. I'm not sure that tubes will ultimately fix your problem
but a used X10D would be a cheap way to find out. You might also try
the Tubalizer.

2006-05-18 Thread sleepysurf

Actually, overall, I'm VERY pleased with the Squeezebox paired with the
Benchmark. The Benchmarks razor sharp resolution was exactly what I
found lacking with the stock SB. Together, they bring out the best in
95% of my collection. However, the remaining 5% are older or poorly
recorded redbook CD's, with an exceptionally harsh digital sound.
It's probably foolish to think the X-10 will make those 5% more
listenable without deleterious effects on the other 95%. I'm looking
forward to an extended listening session this weekend, and will report
back.
