2013-02-24 Thread Weseloh,Chip [Ontario]
Yesterday afternoon, driving west out of Port Rowan, past the Bird
Studies Canada (BSC) Headquarters, crossing Hwy 59, and onto Lakeshore
Rd., we saw several small groups (3-25 birds) of Sandhill Cranes totally
59 individuals. Several groups of 3-5 birds were foraging in stubble
cornfields on both sides of the road ; the group of 25+/- was standing
and foraging in a small stream/creek on the north side of the road with
25-50 Canada Geese. Two other small groups of cranes were seen also in
other open-water areas along Lakeshore Rd.

Directions: From the south end of the town of Port Rowan at the overlook
of Long Point Bay, continue west, past BSC Headquarters, cross over Hwy
59 and continue on what becomes Lakeshore Rd. All the cranes were
within the first 1-2 kms of Lakeshore Rd.

[Ontbirds] CORRECTION: No Ring-necked Duck (Windsor)

2013-02-24 Thread Kelly M
Since yesterday, Josh Vandermeulen has gone over some diagnostic points
with reference to my duck photo and helped me reach the conclusion that
this was a female Redhead, not Ring-necked Duck.

I apologize to anyone inconvenienced by this mis-identification.

[Ontbirds] Trumpeter Swans (Windsor)

2013-02-24 Thread Kelly Morrissey
Hello,
There are two Trumpeter Swans at Lakeview Park Marina in Windsor affording
great views, vocalizing and dancing with each other. They are right up close by
the ice fishermen.

Lakeview Park Marina is at the end of Riverdale Ave where it meets Riverside
Drive East. Coming from outside Windsor, take the Manning Road exit and follow
it all the way north to Riverside Drive and turn west. That's the best I can do
from the field on a phone.

[Ontbirds] Bohemian waxwings on northern edge of Georgetown

2013-02-24 Thread paloma plant
At 2:40 pm there was a flock of 40-50 bohemian waxwings in a tree at the
southwest corner of Hwy 7 and Hyland Ave (across from Watch Tower). They kept
flying down from this tree to a fruit bush/shrub situated on the corner of
Jocelyn Cr.and Hyland Ave, behind 23 Hyland Ave. This section of Hwy 7 is to
the north of Georgetown where it curves slightly west and before the lights
where Hwy 7 meets with Trafalgar Rd.

Good birding.

The Townsend's Solitaire still [thankfully] remains at its previous location on

[Ontbirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Redpolls (Ottawa)

2013-02-24 Thread willott123
Hi Ontbirders.

Today a flock of 3 dozen plus Bohemian Waxwings flew over the Old Quarry Trail.
Last weekend, I saw a dozen or two there as well. Others saw a lot more.
From the parking lot, take the right-most trailthe one that allows
dog-walking. Go past the hydro station and follow trail until it turns left.
It's about a 2 minute walk.

Seveal dozen common redpolls at the Hilda Road feeders today. I saw one that
may be a Hoary but those things move around so hard to be sure. But a trio of
birders mentioned seeing two Hoaries there while I was watching the birds.
Mornings seem better for seeing greater number of the redpolls. Thanks.
