[cayugabirds-l] Sunday Walk
After splitting up from the birdwalk at Mudlock, my dad and I went over and checked out Montezuma. There was a little open water at the pool by the visitor's center, which had a Tundra Swan, Wigeons and several Green-Winged Teals. Mixed in was a EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL, the white stripe on him quite visible. We stopped at the boat house in Aurora on the way back- nothing much, two pairs of Bufflehead. Just before we drove through Locke, a Rough- Legged Hawk flew over. [cayugabirds-l] Thanksgiving birding
Hello everyone, I just got back from Wisconson for Thanksgiving, so I wanted to give people a brief description of birding highlights. In Ohio, we stayed at a hotel on Lake Erie. I got good looks at Ruddy Ducks and several Bonaparte's Gulls on the lake. As we drove past a nuclear power plant, an immature Bald Eagle flew over. We stopped at the Ottawa N.W.R., which was closed for deer hunting. I stayed with my brother in Madison, Wisconson. One day, he pointed out a flock of twenty Sandhill Cranes that flew high over his house. We drove out to Devil's Lake park, looking for reported Townsend's Solitaires hiding in the junipers. We didn't see any, but we got good looks at Pileated Woodpeckers. The highlight of the trip was a visit to Natural Bridge State Park. We got spectacular looks at a pair of adult Bald Eagles. One was calling. They were perched in a tree, and then they flew up and away. There was a forest in the park filled with dead trees. As soon as we entered the forest, I immediately saw a Red- Headed Woodpecker, perched on a stump. As we walked through the forest, we kept seeing and hearing more of them. I had never heard a Red-Headed call to one another. It was neat. We must have seen or heard a dozen of them. There was also a Pileated and a Hairy in the forest. We stopped at Indiana Dunes National Park on our way back. We saw a swallow- like bird by the steel plant, but couldn't I.D. it. We ran into a birdwatcher, who was waiting for a reported Northern Gannet to fly over the park. He said the bird we saw could've been a Cave Swallow. What an adventure. [cayugabirds-l] Cockatiel
My neighbor down the road just called to tell me she found a cockatiel flying around her yard. She coaxed it in the house, and was holding on to it when she called me. I told her that her best bet was to take the bird to the Cornell vet school. I wonder if this was the same cockatiel flying around Cornell a week ago? [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake
I birded Dryden Lake Saturday afternoon at 3 PM. Highlights were a DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, a flying OSPREY with a fish in its claws, WOOD DUCK, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, RED-EYED and BLUE-HEADED VIREOS. As I was watching the vireos, a small brownish hawk with a short tail flew over my head. I got a brief glimpse of it with the binocluars before it flew off. I think it might have been a MERLIN. There were also a pair of PIED-BILLED GREBES on the lake. Other more common birds included Phoebes, Catbirds, a Redtail, Great Blue Heron and Blue Jays. The duck hunters were putting out decoys on the far end of the lake. Also seen were WOOD DUCK and BROWN CREEPER. There was a single REDWING mixed in with a flock of fifty COWBIRDS. We then drove over to George Lake and saw the dark phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake
I birded Dryden Lake Saturday afternoon. Nothing really exciting. There was a warbler flock in the bushes near the parking lot. I picked out NASHVILLE and BLACK- THROATED GREEN WARBLERS. There was also Red-Bellied and Hairy Woodpecker around. The lake had one Cormorant. Then there were common birds like Phoebe, Song Sparrow, Catbird, Downy Woodpecker, and Kingfisher. The most active birds there were GREAT BLUE HERONS. A pair of them flew in and landed on a log. They strutted on the log, wings out, necks sticking up. It was quite a display! [cayugabirds-l] malloryville preserve
I birded the Von Englen preserve Sunday afternoon. I saw a few interesting things. Just as I was starting, where the two trails branch off, I saw a thrush. I'm pretty sure it was a SWAINSON'S THRUSH. It had buffy cheeks and eye ring, and it wasn't one of the more common thrushes. I heard a PILEATED call out once. I also saw SAPSUCKER, FLICKER, TOWHEE, CATBIRD, and a flock of ROBINS. I also saw one warbler, bluish gray on top, yellow and white underneath. I saw a yellow spot on its back. My guess is PARULA WARBLER. fall birds
I birded East Hill and South Hill recreation parkways today. On the East Hill trail, the highlight was a PHILADELPHIA VIREO (new life bird) along with more common birds like FIELD SPARROW, RED EYED VIREO and others. A buteo hawk flew through the woods and landed on a dead tree. As I walked back, I saw about five BLUEBIRDS perched on the tennis courts fence. The South Hill parkway was quieter, except for a flock of confusing fall warblers. I picked out BLACK-THROATED GREEN, but the birds flitted around so fast, it was tough to identify them. A PILEATED WOODPECKER called out from the woods, but I didn't see him.
