yes the cruise is a rare option on any chevelle. i don't know the numbers
for my year (65) but i have never seen one on a car in person. i have been
fortunate to find an NOS speed and cruise control for it. its not in my
possession yet but I have been promised it by my supplier of NOS parts. The
only problem is I have been told that it may interfere with headers and I may
have to run stock exhaust manifolds to use it.

I recently went to Floyd Garretts Musclecar Museum anticipating the site of
that car, that was the whole reason I blowed my $10 to get in. I looked all
over that garage and it was nowhere to be found, I went up front and asked
about it and I heard about him selling the car to some guy in California
just recently. Hmmm. Sounds to me like somebody wanted to make some extra
dough like many people did when #3 tradgically died. But anyway its kind of
funny that people didn't mention Smokey too much while he was alive but just
as soon as he passed he got tons of coverage. Sure he got some here
recently before he died, he did some advertising for Pro-Long (still don't
trust the stuff, at least when they did the drain your oil out and drive a
few hundred miles, sounds like snake oil to me), but now its Smokey this and
Smokey that, why didn't they do that while he was alive? Anyway I am a big
fan of the car and I would really like to see it in person one of these
days, but I doubt it since now it will probably disappear into the hands of
private collectors who will keep it out of public view for years to come, or
worse yet, some moron will start vintage racing it. I know its supposed to
be at some race in the next little while, I would hate to see some hotshot
try to push it thinking it was like a new car and slam it into the wall.

Hello - I have been trying to find info on an old racecar, Smokey Yunick's
1966 Chevelle which was driven by Curtis Turner in the 1967 race season. In
fact, during the non-Chevy-factory sponsorship years, this car came out of
nowhere to win the pole at the '67 Daytona 500.

This car is famous for the liberal rule bending incorporated in it's
construction. Smokey felt that if the rules did not say you couldn't do it,
it was fair game. Like large diameter fuel lines which coiled all over the
car and had a capacity of 6 gallons...floorboards hammered flat so they
acted as a bellypan, which was outlawed...'stock' bumpers re-made so they
fit tight to the body...etc...etc. The car was even rumored to be actually
7/8 size! Many of Smokey's 'innovations' would be discussed and outlawed by
NASCAR in the week between races, but he seemed to keep coming up with more
creative ideas. Some stories I've read suggest the competitors and Bill
France of NASCAR were getting pretty fed up, but other stories sound like
there may have been some under the counter collusion helping Smokey along!

The original race car crashed and disappeared, but the back-up car still
exists. It was in Floyd Garrett's Muscle Car Museum for awhile, but I
understand it has now been sold to a private party in California.

The Sept. 2001 issue of Super Chevy has a small feature on Smokey and this
car. I have seen the car briefly on one of the weekend car shows, where
they
called it a '67. But that's about it.

Do any of you have any sources of info on old NASCAR trivia? Website
suggestions? Other magazine articles? I am not finding much...

Thanks for any help.JimACES #20202 - '66 SS's

All I got to say on this one, go to stickdeath.com I know its a violent
site, pretty senseless, but its still funny, he's got a bit on anti theft
devices that I would like to see put in production. Before I get a million
e-mails about it, no I am not satanic, no I am not a violent person, no I am
not like my peers that enjoy acting like dumb asses, and no I don't listen
to the music he has on his site. often.
Now for the reality, I live in a pretty decent area, still have the morons
that would rob you blind but I can still leave my car unlocked with the
windows rolled down, and my CDs sitting out and still not worry that
somebody will steal my stuff. But in the incident that I go someplace big
(kind of like how I went to Lexington the other day to meet up with Wes) I
lock my doors and don't leave the car for very long, even while it is out of
my site I know how easy it is to get it started without the keys.
Eventually I am going to get a Bulldog security system with the beeper that
tells you when it is going off. On my dirt bikes I put a toggle switch
under the gas tank on the coil so when I stop at a gas station or something
I make a motion like I am turning the gas off when actually I am flicking
the switch, it works and has already stopped one theft, sometime or another
I am going to put one back on the Chevelle, took it off when I was have
electrical problems.

Floyd Garrett sold the #13 66 Chevelle race car before Smokey died. Smokey
wrote in his book that he built that car for the 1968 Daytona 500 but never
ran it. He sold it, then later repurchased it and restored it to race ready
condition. He said that with modern tires and Dale Earnhardt driving it would
still run over 200 at Daytona. He also said in his book that Floyd Garrett
recently had sold it.

As always, thanks for all the responses. Given that I really like my
current loud exhaust system (it definitely has an aggressive resonation
inside the interior with the windows up or down), I really do think that
the 40 series 2-chamber mufflers are for me.

Trouble is, though, that after calling some local auto parts stores and
looking through my Chevelle catalogs some generic catalogs (Jegs,
Summit, Whitney, etc.), I can't find anyone who sells the 2-chamber
mufflers. None of the local stores I know of (inlucing the chains like
Pep Boys, NAPA, etc.) carry any Flowmaster equipment, while the various
catalogs seem to carry a variety of Flowmaster pipes mufflers except
for the 42543 2-chamber 2.5 offset/offset mufflers that I need.

I plan to contact Flowmaster directly on Monday, but in the meantime is
there anyone out there with 42543 mufflers and if so, where did you get
them? Thanks again in advance!
