I totally restored a Canadian 66 Malibu SS. I did the hole car myself except
for the finishing of the body and painting the outside body.
I also restored a 69 chevelle last year and maybe this year I will get the
1967 Beaumont done or I have a 1971 chevelle that needs doing too.
I have some pictures up on web site and in the classified section I have
pics of the 1971 chevelle.

I have used alot of the after market parts PUI door panels and seat covers I
am impressed with. I haven't had problems with the door rubbers either, not
sure of make. I hate the after market wheel well chrome, never fits right
and can be very agrivating to make it look good.

I used the GW 12" brake kit on my 71. I also have the PST kit with squeaky
poly bushings... Besides the squeaking, I love the setup. My car handles
great. I don't race it or anything, but it handles great everytime some
jerk pulls out in front of me and I have to swerve to avoid her... e I
mean 'them' hehe

I haven't done anything to the rear suspension, but just doing the front
suspension is a night and day difference. Btw, I used TRW springs on the
front, not the ones from GW, but only because I had just bought and
installed the front springs before I did the front disc brakes from GW.

[Chevelle-List] 1972 Chevelle Rebuild

2002-02-07 Thread Kevin M. Bowman

Well, a little bio on me Just getting into cars and decided to buy a
1972 Chevelle from a friend. The body is OK (some mud), but for the price,
not bad. It has the stock 350 and I am replacing the Saginaw 3spd with a
Turbo 350. Right now, there is no trans in the car and the motor has a
whooped cam (minimum). The car has set for the last 6 yrs as a project by
the wayside. Luckily, my friend is a body man and is helping with the car.
Add that to the motor man in the bunch, I am will be OK.

Before the car hits the road, I plan to do some work. If someone can help
me with ballpark figures, that would be great...

Upgrade to front disc brakes (plan to look in salvage yards)
Power Brakes
Would like to upgrade to rear disc, but have not seen too many mentions of
it...
Suspension: shocks, springs, drop spindles
Rear end: posi unit with 3.73 gears
Rims and tires - street
Rims and tires - strip (not a priority)
Ignition System
Race Exhaust with Cut-outs for open header at the track
15 Gallon Fuel Cell

I am 'designing' an engine right now. Trying to find the best bang for the
buck. I realize that 11's on pump gas will be difficult, but it may be
possible. Even low 12's would be great. I plan to run electric accessories
to maximize horsepower gains. Based on my reading, I will most likely
stroke the motor on the rebuild. After the car hits the street for awhile,
I will debate on the 6-71 blower vs. a big block. IF (more like WHEN) it
becomes a full blown race car, I will price the better fiberglass available.

As far as my past, you can tell I run with a lot of Mustang guys.. I told
everyone it would be an old muscle car, an old wagon, or an 87-93 Mustang
Coupe that I would build. Money and convenience landed me the Chevelle.
GREAT CHOICE for me

If anyone races at Norwalk, send me an email offline. Or if you are
somewhat local and know where some great hangouts are, write me offline as
well.

It never gets started! It gets parked in my big garage when it starts
getting cold, out comes the battery, on goes the cover, in go the mothballs,
and there it sits until the weather warms up 10 or 11 months later. At least
it seems that long.

My buddy's '67 SS sits right next to it. When the anticipated Spring day
comes, we do a lap around the block - which is about 10 miles out here in
the country! Our wives usually sit out on our deck, and they tell us they
can hear the Chevelles the whole time...the traditional first Spring lap is
mostly at WOT. They also remind us that tickets are expensive and
embarassing, but so far we've been lucky, I guess. Can't wait to get to try

Re:[Chevelle-List] Truck/clutch help

2002-02-07 Thread rickas

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Folks
I got the following email from a coworker. As I recall, the truck is an early
90's chevy with 305 and a 5 speed manual tranny. Can anyone offer up a suggestion on
what is going on? Thanx.

rick
Hi, OK, let me run this by you and see if anything crops up in your Chevrolet brain.
As he was leaving Albany the clutch stopped working (pedal to the metal). So he shifts
without using the clutch and then he hears and feels a "bang" and it won't come out of
5th gear.

When we crawled under it, the line from the master to the slave was broken off at the
slave. We've replaced that and tried to bleed it. Only get a drip out of the master
cylinder. (He's going to pick up a new one or rebuild kit tomorrow.) We even
disconnected the line at the master cylinder and still only a drip.
In addition, the bell housing has a crack in it that has a line of oil on it. I don't
see how that would cause any of the problems. BUT he had the oil changed at Avis Lube
a couple of weeks ago and we can't seem to find the transmission oil filler plug. So
OK, I would think if it was a problem involving lack of lubrication that he would have
had some whining, grinding, etc. etc. noises before he busted a gear or something? He
was able to drive it all the way home in 5th and said no untoward noises.
So any ideas?

Brad,
I just love hearing good things about the global west set up. I bought
and installed the whole set up including the 12" brakes, tubular upper
control arms, rear tubular lowers, del a lum bushings front and rear and I am
using an AGR steering box. The pieces are in my 65 elky which is not yet
finished. I`m using a 383 small block w. 700R4, 3.31 posi rear and can barely
stand it until it`s finished. I have to keep telling myself to take my time.
I would love to hear more about chevelles using the global west setup
particularly about handling impressions and experiances. Can you share more?
Anyone else? Please I`m dying here. thanx, bob Myers

Bob,

Sounds like your rearend was set-up by someone who knows what they are
doing. There is a method used to "tune" a posi. I read that it was used
by road/solo racers to help achieve better traction coming out of the
corners (?). If my memory serves me correct, the method used to test the
posi was to leave one rear tire on the ground (with the weight of the car),
remove the other tire and then with a homemade tool (described below) attach
a torque wrench an apply pressure to see at what lbs/ft. of torque the
rearend would break loose from the other side. The goal was to get it break
loose at 120-140 lbs/ft. (?).

The homemade tool: was a 1/8"-1/4" plate of steel, with holes that allow
the plate to be placed over the axle studs, and sit flush against the brake
drum. Then a nut was welded to the center of the plate for the torque
wrench to attach too.

Maybe once a month. My sister is storing my car for me this year and I've
only gotten out there twice to start it since October. (who knew I could've
kept it out till almost Christmas??) If I do start it up, I let it run long
enough to get up to temperature + 5-10 minutes. I wouldn't start it if I
wasn't going to let it get up to temp. I also don't let it idle the entire
time. I raise the revs (2000-3000) for a couple minutes here and there
while running.

Jeff I am very wary of even the "good" repro vinyl. I ordered a PUI interior several
years ago in Tan. Within 3 years it was green/mustard where exposed to UV light.
I've mentioned this both here and at chevelle tech, but never heard of anyone else
with the same problem.

When I replaced the door panels I went with parts from Distinctive (owned by ACC now)
and so far no problems. But the car is exposed to UV a lot less now.

Good Luck

If you can match a cross section of the weatherstriping, it will work wherever it
comes from. The JC Whitney catalog has a variety of weatherstriping and they show
cross section views. See if you can match it up. I have seen the catalogs in
bookstores or you can visit their web site.

Buckets vs Bench is a personnal decision. I went with late model buckets just
because they are more comfortable.

I can't speak for Herb (and his car likely has not seen much high
performance driving quite yet), but I have had my Chevelle in extreme
situations with the full GW setup. I have the full negative roll front
end (tubular arms, 11" F-body brakes, beefy springs (maybe the big block
or race springs), 1 1/8 sway bar, and Koni adjustable shocks; and in
back I have my 1967 untouched springs and upper arms along with GW lower
tubular arm and Koni shocks.

I've been at Willow Springs race track with the Chevelle and the car
felt great. A very slight understeer, but fixable with the gas pedal.
I did a self timed lap and got 1:48, which is an 83 mph average. Speeds
in Turn 2 (a high speed right hand sweeper) work out to 1.03G average
(470 foot radius, 85-90 mph through the turn).

I believe rating on the engine was about 165hp when I

were another thing at the top of my list (besides

Hi Guys,
It`s me again with another question. I had my elky on a lift {not on the
road yet] and I could turn one rear wheel without the other moving or it
moved slowly. I know it`s a posi, I have seen the clutch pack and springs and
I had a pro check it prior to install. What`s up, I thought both wheels would
always move at the same time with a posi. Thanx, Bob Myers NC

I usually put my car in heated storage from Nov-march, and never start it, till the day i take it out, my thinking is if you start the darn thing, your exhaust gets all wet from the condensation, and if you dont run it long enough, guess what  the ole rust starts  from the inside of your exhaust pipes, this of course is short term storage, long term might be a different story, cause its allways good to keep every part lubed and in working order,   ive  never had a problem yet doing what i do, i just pull the battery out, i dont even raise it off the ground,  like i said ive never had a problem   this of course is my opinion.

I put doug thorley tri-y headers (pn 376Y) on my el camino and am very
happy with them, now that they are ceramic coated. They came with an
industrial chrome finish.. I have heard that DynoMax headers fit a
small block chevelle very well. Summit & Jegs both sell these, already
ceramic coated, for less than $200.00 A very nice package price.I
have a set of dynomax in the shed, awaiting install in my camaro.

Bill, A complete suspension rebuild is doable in the garage/driveway,
but it CAN be intimidating.I have re-done mine (front & rear) twice.
It was far enough apart in time, that each time was a learning
experience. I won't say that it was easy, but definitely doable by a
rookie. You also have many resources available to help. Check the
TECH Forums at www.chevelles.com (where you signed up for this list).
Also Check the WorkShop area of http://links.chevelles.net/links
Some very good internet links there. Also several folks on this list
will be glad to help you thru the difficult parts.

Before you buy/do anything, decide what goal you have in mind for your
chevelle. Drag Racing??? Sports Car Handling??? Daily Driver???
Original Restoration??? Each will require different parts and
approaches. There is a link to P-S-T, as well as several other
suppliers at http://links.chevelles.net in the supplier/suspension area.
A complete stock rebuild kit is $250-$300.00 for the front.

My personnal experience is to make sure that you use quality parts (MOOG,
TRW, DANA) . I used a "kit" for the first rebuild, and after only
50,000 miles EVERYTHING needed replacement again. This time around, I
shopped for MOOG parts. They will cost a bit more, but IMHO well worth
the cost.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Rotisserie

2002-02-07 Thread GRAYCAV56
Josh,

I may do the same for my metal magician!  I picked up the project from Redi-Strip yesterday and U-Hauled the carcass back to Johnstown.  If you have never seen a car after Redi-Strip is done, you need to do so some time.  Wow.

The car is completely devoid of any rust, bondo, paint, sealer, wax, goo or french fries.  You have fresh tin to play with.  Even the lead seams used by the factory disappear.  When I dropped off the car last night, my metal guy was truely impressed.  The amount of expensive labor that Redi-Strip will save him (and eventually me) is huge.  Plus there won't be any hidden surprises.  All the sheet metal is there without makeup.

I did find a few areas that will need repaired that I thought were solid, but since this one is my AACA Hershey project car, I won't skimp.  I was also surprised at the quality of some of the previous repairs as there was a significant dent in the trunk lid that I had no idea was there, of course now the dent and puller holes are glaring me in the face.

Cost?  $1000 for the body and roughly $100 each for the doors, hood and trunk.  I didn't do the fenders since one is shot and the other is in really good shape as is.

I believe rating on the engine was about 165hp when I
looked it up. The engine seens to be in pretty good
shape, but I'm not an expert. I do already have
electronic ignition, so I guess that's a plus. Headers
were another thing at the top of my list (besides
suspension/brakes). Recommend any brands in
particular??

Thanks!

I know it's a lot of time/money/work. I already spent
way too much on buying the car. I'm sure I'll
deffinately spend more on the car than it's worth, but
that's half the fun, right?

Thanks all for the suggestions, they helped a lot!
Suspension was deffinately high up on my list, the car
doesn't handle too well right now. How involved is it?
Where can I get the PST kit and how much does it cost?

Thanks again for all of the ideas.

These are all mods that I plan to do to my 350sb '72 chevelle... just
trying to find the best solution since I need HP to run fast, but don't want
it to be a race-only vehicle. I actually picked up a book called "How to
Run 11's on a budget" 400SB was the only difference. No NOS, blower, fuel
injection, etc.. It was pretty interesting reading..

I am planning on taking my time with the car. It is not my #1 priority to
get it on the street. I plan to upgrade brakes and suspension (anyone done
REAR disc brakes?), ignition system, and build the motor last. My car was a
basket case, but for the money I paid, it was a good price. Although it has
some mud in it, the body is pretty straight.. Amazing things happen when
your good friend is a body man and wants to do a great job on it.

I am currently looking at different motor combinations. Since the motor
needs rebuilt, I am thinking about stroking it. and then later, maybe a
blower... (the motor!!). Still have some time to think about it though.

BTW, there is a Chevelle (not mine) on the webpage. It is going to be one
BAD A$$ vehicle, especially when he decides to 'get serious' and go with the
blown 502+.

Have a great one!

Hi Bill, Welcome to the list.
You didn't say what hp your 350 is or what condition it is in. A small block
makes horsepower by compression & breathing. 300 to 350 hp is not that hard
to get out of a 350 & it sounds like you already have the beginnings with
the intake & carb. Working within a budget is tough but things like a mild
cam kit, headers & an electronic ignition system are not that expensive &
should fit into your budget. You don't need extravagant aluminum race heads
but a good set of heads with 202 valves is a must for breathing on a 350. So
are a good intake/carb & a decent set of headers. A solid shortblock making
around 10 to 1 compression with the above bolt ons will make good power.
The hood I can't help you with.
The brakes are not really hard but do involve quite a bit of work. There are
a couple of options as to how to go about it. There are kits made that will
include everything you need to completely convert everything over to disks
with new parts but they are somewhat expensive. You can also salvage used
parts from other cars or buy & swap new/used parts from other individuals.
Some of the other members can give you a lot more details on what's involved
& the expense of this changeover.
Good luck on your Malibu!
