RE: [Chevelle-list] Rear Upper Control Arm Bushings
I did mine in the garage with no air tools and just good old fashioned hand tools and elbow grease. It was a chore. I used a torch and burned out the rubber and used hammer, chisel and punches to remove the sleeve. I cut one side of the sleeve with a saw and collapsed the sleeve. It was pretty rusted in. I used c clamps and steel plates to press in the new bushings. I took the control arms to a buddy's house and pressed those out and in with a press. -Original Message- From: Brad Waller [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 15, 2005 3:06 PM To: 'The Chevelle Mailing List' Subject: [Chevelle-list] Rear Upper Control Arm Bushings Well, after almost 40 years mine are shot. Any of you ever done this job yourself? I had my front end aligned, and the guy at the shop recommended that I replace them. RE: [Chevelle-list] Powertrax Revisited
I made the mistake of buying a new style powertrax for my diff after I blew up the spider gears. These are only available for open style diffs and not the posi diffs. Mine is a posi and their web site and ordering is not clear on this. I was quite disappointed and ended up putting in an Auburn Pro series posi unit. I believe I ordered it from Summit and they took it back no questions asked. There was a feature on Hot Rod TV where they swapped in one for a chevy real. I recorded it on DVR and used it when I attempted to install mine, they didn't mention the open diff thing either. They gave it high marks. I use a club with the wheels cranked to lock toward a curb or in the garage toward the wall. When I switch out the engine to the LS1 I will run a hidden kill switch shutting off the fuel pump. I'm pretty happy with my Auburn Pro Series and 4.10 setup. It locks up great and is smooth/quiet. Mine is a 12 bolt with Superior axles and I completely rebuilt it. I broke the stock carrier. I am beginning to lean toward the Auburn unit. I know the 8.2 10 bolt is not the best, but will a beefed version be at least as good as a stock 12 bolt? I am planning on going with all new innards with 3.08's and aftermarket c-clip axles and a girdle type rear cover. I'm still going to have about $1,200 in it. The 3.08 are temporary as I am saving toward a Gear Vendor unit in about two years from now, then I will go with something in the 3:42 - 3:90ish Range. It also stands to reason that the 8.2 would allow for less parasitic power loss and be quicker and return better gas mileage due to the lighter weight of the internals. But since the ring gear is smaller in diameter, the pinion would have less leverage so theoretically it would probably equal out...or only be marginally better? Is anyone out there running an 8.5 10 bolt? RE: [Chevelle-list] Ring and Pinion
I have 4.10 gears with a turbo 350 transmission and 28" tall tires. I run about 3,500 at 65MPH with a small block. I don't like it but chose this gear ratio knowing I was going to swap in a 4L60E trans giving me a cruise rpm of about 2,600 at 65MPH. A taller tire will only help. 3.73 is still a fairly steep gear and I agree with John would be considered marginal with a 1:1 final drive ration trans such as the TH350/400. If you ever plan on swapping in an overdrive trans it would be worth the short term discomfort of high rpm cruising. It's more difficult to change gear ratio than trans in my opinion. I set up my own diff and it's a job by yourself in your garage on your back. Hope this helps. I would stick with 2,500 rpm as a target cruise rpm. I guess what I was wondering was would a numerically lower gear set be a better route for a cruizer? I would still like a little snap at times but I also dont want to be running 4500rpm down the highway. I know there are formulas out there but was wanting personal opinions from people that have cruizers. Let me know what you think. Re: [Chevelle-list] 71 Chevelle LS1
Tim, I have checked into stand alone harnesses like Painless and Street and performance. I have the complete stock harness and ECM and feel confident enough that I can make it work. I'm pretty good with electrical and if I get the wiring diagrams I know I can figure it out. I was thinking of going with a Dakota Digital Dash for gauges to clean things up. I have a gauge pillar and column mounted tach now. The spedo works but is way off due to gear change to 4.10. I know I can fix that but with the 4L60E my spedo wont work any way. The Dakota spedo will work with the new computer controlled trans. Re: [Chevelle-list] 71 Chevelle LS1
Here is the info I got on the fuel system mods. Joe, The tank listed in Jegs is by their request for a stock style conversion that can be adapted with an after market fuel pump such as the ones made by Walbro or Bosch which will handle your proposed HP out put but will be pushing the pump to its limits. I recommend that you look into our Stealth line of fuel tanks utilizing an Aeromotive A1000 with a 100 Micron Pre-filter all in the tank. The tank is baffled front to back and features a unique fuel reservoir for the fuel pick-up. This reservoir ensures proper fuel pick up when moving with great force in a lateral or longitudinal direction. The tank it self fits in the stock location and has a CNC machined access cover at the top should you ever need to service the pump and/or filter. The line sizes are a -10 AN feed and a -8 AN return. We can make these exit anywhere on the tank you would like preferably on the front face of the tank. The proposed set up is suitable for the 650-to1000+ HP range. This tank can be purchased directly from us or through Jegs on a special order basis only. I will give you a call tomorrow so we can further discuss this. It appears to me that you should have less problem since the 1st gen Camaro was a rear steer and I think yours is front steer so you should have less problem with clearances. Motor mount adapters for the Camaro set the engine back 2 1/2" to clear the subframe and headers are real expensive. Good luck and I look forward to seeing some answers to your question. I managed to break the differential in my 12 bolt rear end last weekend. I was wondering if anyone had experience with the Powertrax locker carrier. [Chevelle-list] RE: Chevelle-list Digest, Vol 18, Issue 21
I would recommend the edelbrock style for a street driven car. They are very well mannered and easy to tune. I've personally never had good luck with Holly's. They are more the racers choice and like to be tampered with from what I have seen. If you want a good mannered carb that doesn't require a lot of tweeking go with the Edelbrock. If you're looking for that extra .10th in the quarter go with the Holly of BG. I would'nt go any bigger than 750 on your engine. A 650 would spin it to 6,000 with no problem. I have a modified 283 which is bored, 2.02 intake valves, ported, .454 lift cam and I have run a 750 on it fine. I currently am running a 600 and it seems to run well up 6,000 with that. I'm sure a 650 would do fine on a 327. It's only a function of your CID, max engine rpm and volumetric efficiency which is probably 90% for a modified engine. Here is a link to an article on carb sizing formulas http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/56919/. RE: [Chevelle-list] Tranny slipping?
Sounds like the trans will probably need to be rebuilt. The only other thing you might check is vacuum modulator and vacuum getting to it. This can cause the trans to feel very different but mostly noticeable when you let off the gas the engine will just drop to an idle.
