SNMP Agent on Router

2001-02-26 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi All,

I need some help for making the router SNMP enabled. I
am actually testing it out SNMP Manager Utility.
I am using the following commands on the router

snmp-server community hppublic RO
snmp-server enable traps snmp
snmp-server host x.x.x.x traps hppublic

where x.x.x.x is the IP address of the machine on
which the SNMP Manager is running.

Do I have to specify a file or directory for which
SNMP Manager looks for ?
How will the SNMP Manager query the MIB database ?

Thanks & Regards

Amit

QOS for VoIP Traffic

2001-03-20 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi All,

I am using VoIP over a satellite link.

I am planning to configure some queuing mechanism on
the router which can provide dedicated bw to voice
traffic and at the same time use the entire bw for
data traffic when no traffic from higher priority
flows is available( voice )

Please send me your suggestions and comments on any
other feature that I can enable to improve quality.

Thanks & regards

Amit

Re : ISDN Backup

2000-12-13 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi All,

I am using the following config on my router.

router eigrp xxx
 redistribute static
 passive-interface BRI1/0
 network x.x.x.x
 distribute-list 2 out Serial0/0
!
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Serial0/0
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 bri1/0 150

I am using ISDN as the backup interface.
The problem is that when my Serial link is erratic
(not down), isdn backup is not able to activate
(momentarily activates and then disconnects)
what feature should I use to activate my backup
immediately as soon as it senses a break in the serial
link.
Can I set some threshold level?

Secondly I wanted to stop the www traffic when my ISDN
backup is up ??
Any suggestions.

Thanks & Regards

Amit

Re : ISDN Backup

2000-12-14 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi jenny,

Yes, I agree that with floating static routes backup
delay command would not work.
When my serial link is completely down then the ISDN
backup works perfectly well. It is only when the
serial link is flapping that the real problem comes up
as neither the condition of the link is good enough to
handle the load nor does it allow ISDN to takeover.

In such situations how can I prevent downtime by
allowing the ISDN to take the load.

Secondly I wanted to increase the ISDN bandwidth by
adding more ISDN lines.( The present bw is 128kbps
(multilink enabled)
Any hints/suggestions on that would also be
appreciated.

Thanks & Regards

Amit

You don't need to use the backup delay command if
you're using floating
static routes for backup, in fact I'm not sure that it
will actually do
anything (how does it know what the secondary
interface is without a backup
interface command?), but I've never actually tried
using it with floating
statics.
Using floating statics, how quickly the backup line
kicks in should depend
on the convergence time of your routing protocol and
design. EIGRP should
be pretty quick, generally.
What puzzles me, though, is the statement 'isdn backup
is not able to
activate (momentarily activates and then
disconnects)'. Do you mean that
the ISDN call doesn't work, or that the call is
disconnecting before the
idle timer expires or what?
Generally (depending on bits of the config that you
haven't shown), if the
serial link goes down for long enough for the routing
table to point to the
ISDN instead, the ISDN will call and will stay up for
at least 120 seconds
(default idle time), even if the routing quickly
reconverges back to the
serial.
If the serial link goes down (or has errors) for such
a short period that
the routing table does not point to the ISDN, then the
ISDN won't call at
all.

Does it work OK when the serial link goes down and
stays down? If so, how
quickly does the ISDN activate?
If the serial link is flapping, is the ISDN call
(including PPP negotiation
if you're using PPP) successful? debug isdn q931 and
debug ppp neg or
debug ppp auth may show any connection problems, and
debug dialer may show
why it is disconnecting.

You do not have to use the BACKUP INTERFACE command,
that is just another
way of doing
it. I like the floating static commands much better,
I can test the ISDN
connectivity
without having to take the serial interface down. And
the Backup Interface
command does
not work very well in a frame relay situation.

I do agree you need to add the commands for Backup
Delay, both for going to
ISDN and
going back to the primary.

As for preventing the WWW traffic when on ISDN, apply
an access list to the
BRI to
prevent it.

Voice Over IP

2000-12-27 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi everybody,

I need assistance on the VoIP problem I am facing :

We are planning to have a VoIP setup on the already
existing data link between our local and remote
office.
Both sites have Cisco 3640 routers configured for it.

The router on the local site has IOS 11.3(9)T and the
remote router has 12.0(5)T1 on it.

Is it necessary for the routers at both ends be
running a similar version of IOS for the Voice calls
to be successful. What kind of upgrade is required?

Secondly the loopback test (hairpinning) was
successful for the local site but a similar test at
the remote site was unsuccessful.
Could that be due to any signalling problems ?

Thanks & Regards

Amit

Ping response between subnets slow

2001-01-02 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi Everybody,

Need some help on the following problem

I have 2 subnets configured on my LAN say ( x.x.1.0
and x.x.2.0 )with a SM of 255.255.255.0.
There are 2 Catalyst switches ( each one on a
different subnet)

The router is configured with a primary and a
secondary address on the ethernet port say x.x.1.1 and
x.x.2.1

When I ping a station on one subnet to another and
viceversa the response time is very high (sometimes
upto 80ms) while the response time while pinging in
the same subnet is less than 10ms.

Need some clues on the possible reasons for this

Thanks & Regards

Amit

Re: Ping response between subnets slow

2001-01-10 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi Tony,

Yes you were correct. There are a large number of
packets crossing the subnet. This is think creates a
bottleneck on the ethernet port on the router.
The Ping response within the same subnet also was
badly affected.( I could see a lot of users coming
towards me... so Rebooting the router saved me
temporarily.

could enabling something like ip route-cache on the
router help.

Even pinging from the router to machines on either of
the subnets gave this output

ping xxx.xxx.1.76
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to xxx.xxx.1.76,
timeout is 2 seconds:
!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip
min/avg/max = 24/41/52 ms

#ping xxx.xxx.2.199

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to xxx.xxx.2.199,
timeout is 2 seconds:
!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip
min/avg/max = 36/48/56 m

Need your suggestions

Thanks & regards

Amit

Aggregating Multiple ISDN lines [7:1564]

2001-04-22 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi,

I am upgrading the bandwidth of my ISDN link which is
used as backup.I am adding another ISDN line to have a
bandwith of 256kbps ( 2 lines )
I am currently using ddr with floating static routes
and the remote router dials at our end when the
primary link is down.

I plan to use the foll config at the remote end
int dialer1
encap ppp
ip address ...
dialer string
dialer string
dialer group 1
dialer load threshold 1 either
ppp multilink

int bri0
dialer rotary group 1
encap ppp

int bri1
dialer rotary group 1
encap ppp

And a similar config at the local end ( excluding
dialer string commands)

As soon as I try to configure the dialer load
threshold 1 either command on the dialer interface, I
get a message that " Configure dialer in band, dialer
pool or dialer remote name first"
Am I missing something in the config or do I have to
add dialer in band...

Need your valuble comments / remarks

I plan to use the foll config at the remote end
int dialer1
encap ppp
ip address ...
dialer string
dialer string
dialer group 1
dialer load threshold 1 either
ppp multilink

int bri0
dialer rotary group 1
encap ppp

int bri1
dialer rotary group 1
encap ppp

And a similar config at the local end ( excluding
dialer string commands)

As soon as I try to configure the dialer load
threshold 1 either command on the dialer interface, I
get a message that " Configure dialer in band, dialer
pool or dialer remote name first"
Am I missing something in the config or do I have to
add dialer in band...

Need your valuble comments / remarks

Amit

I came across this in a "Brainbuzz" newsletter. They are an organisation
for the " development, promotion, and implementation of performance based
IT testing" - Field Certification (Trade Mark).

Cisco, Red Hat and Novell staff are on the steering committee. It looks
like the aim is to have a "hands-on" component to the CCNA and CCNP
certifications eventually.

VoIP QoS [7:6586]

2001-05-31 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi Everybody,

I have configured the following parameters on the
serial interface for VoIP.The quality of the calls is
not very good during working hours you can feel some
delay/small interruptions while using it.

interface serial 0
ip tcp header-compression iphc-format
 no ip mroute-cache
 no fair-queue
 ip rtp header-compression iphc-format
 ip rtp priority 16384 16383 64

Could anybody suggest any other alternative to improve
the quality.
Will removing the compression help ?
Do I need to have something like Link Fragmentation
and Interleaving configured.

Thanks

Fwd: FW: VoIP QoS [7:6586]

2001-06-05 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi ,

I presume that the "ip rtp priority 16384 16383 64"
would also reserve 64 kbps of bandwidth for voice
calls.I am still not clear about how CBWFQ would be
different than this.

Help on VLAN configuration [7:8127]

2001-06-12 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi All,

The scenario is such that I have 2 subnets configured
on the LAN. They are x.x.1.0 / 24 and x.x.2.0 / 24.
The IP address for the Routers ethernet port are
x.x.1.1 and x.x.2.1. Similarly workstations in either
subnet point to these addresses ( x.x.1.1 and x.x.2.1
) as their default gateways.
I am having Cat 5509 and Cat 6609 ( With MSFC) with
all the ports in the default VLAN1

I have the following queries on this :
Config on MSFC

Can the IP addresses of the vlan interfaces be any one
of the free IP address available on the LAN.
For eg x.x.1.3

What will be the default gateway address configured on
MSFC in this case ? ( Will it point towards the
address of the Ethernet interface of the External
router )

On the Switches

Can both switches be configured in the VTP Server mode
?
Do the trunk ports have to have an IP address ?

DHCP Server

How would I have to define the scopes on the DHCP
server.
Suppose I plan to have 1 Vlan configured for 1 subnet
and 4 VLANs in the second subnet. How to go about it.

Thanks in advance for any kind of help/ suggestions

Two EA fields in Frame Relay & ISDN Addresing Fram [7:9749]

2001-06-25 Thread Amit Mohanty

Dear Co-Group members,
I am confused why have people given two bit (that too separately) in the
address field in both ISDN and Frame Relay. Basically the 1st of the two
Extended Address bits if sets allows a extended addressing but what happens
to the2nd EA bit? Why do they have this extra provision?
Any specific reason's? Anyone has any answers?

Amit

Strange problem with UNIX machines [7:36993]

2002-03-01 Thread Amit Gupta

hello All,

I am facing a strange problem with one of our UNIX
Servers.
I am able to ping and telnet from this UNIX machine to
any other server/machine but it pings occasionally the
other way round.

I have checked the speed and duplex settings on the
Cisco Catalyst switch and matched it with this HP UX
Server

I have also checked the Subnet Mask of the server.

Any Suggestions ?

Source Quench [7:12477]

2001-07-16 Thread Amit Gupta

Hi All,

I am getting a " Source Quench message " from one of
my HP-UX Servers when I try to ping it from an NT
machine / Switch

I am getting the following msg when I ping the server
from the external router
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to x.x.x.x timeout is 2
seconds:
Q

However if I ping the same server from a Unix machine
/ server, it is ok.

Could it be a problem with the server NIC

Thanks & Regards

Amit

Hello Stephen,

Thanks for your reply.

The Speed and the duplex settings of the server giving
problem is hardcoded to 100 and Full.
The ping from any other Unix machine is Ok.

Re: Source Quench [7:12477]

2001-07-17 Thread Amit Gupta

Hello Priscilla,

Thanks for your response.

Yes, it could not be a problem with the NIC since Ping
from any of the UNIX machines is fine.

I am using the default timeout while pinging from Unix
machines. I get a Source quench message even when I
specify a higher timeout setting.

2001-09-26 Thread Amit Gupta

Hello All,

I am facing some problems in making an end to end VoIP
call over an IPLC.We are using 4 wire e&m, type 5
signalling
The local loopback/ hairpinning is working fine at one
of the ends but it fails " sometimes " at the remote
end.The IPLC link is stable and has no errors.

Can someone suggest any debugging areas.
Could it be some kind of signalling problem. Please
suggest.

Hi ,
How can I find out the collision rate of .1% ( comparing the collisions with Output packets or bytes)
Here's the output from my ethernet interface

 119069488 packets output, 3373784736 bytes, 0 underruns
31 output errors, 41597688 collisions, 0 interface resets
 0 babbles, 0 late collision, 5543538 deferred

The network would be considered unhealthy if it is experiencing more than
.1% of packets colliding (do the math). As for your question regarding
what does it take to shut a port down (errDisable) take a look at this

I understand you to say that there are two 5505s on each
floor. Half of the
users on each floor connect to each 5505 through a single
vlan. Each 5505
connects to a 6509.
Has anyone changed the config of any of the switches lately?
Any hardware
changes?
Thinking intermittant hardware failure.
Do all the users on a floor who loose connectivity connect
to the same 5505?
Does the aggregate of all users on all floors who loose
connectivity connect
to the 6509 through the same blade via their 5505s? Any
error messages on
the 6509? What's the uptime? What does a show log provide?
What is the bandwidth of the links between the 5505s and the
6509?
If gig, do you have any spare GBICs? I have heard reports of
failing units.
Any construction in the building? How about lots of dust in
the wiring
closets?
Any commonality to the electrical feeds for the switches?
UPS or not?
Can you log error messages to a syslog server?
