[cobirds] Sage Thrasher/Nunn

We had an adult Sage Thrasher Sunday morning--early fall migrant? We never

Burrowing Owl feldgings are out and about ...

2012-06-25 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
There are two others that were singing just east of the Golden Eagle nest
on north--they were present last year, too.

Looks like the Wellington SWA had a lightning strike fire last night, large
burn on south in between LCR 3 and LCR 5--"Nunn Road" (aka LCR 64 and WCR
100) was blocked this morning.

For you "burn" lovers--I saw a map in the Nunn Post Office showing WCR
59/100 SW corner had a prescribed burn this year, I haven't checked it yet.

Two Dickcissel singing on north; east of Golden Eagle nest site (just east

[cobirds] Checkout Nunn's "New Lake"/Weld

2012-07-16 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Due to Lonetree Creek flashflooding (I presume) Nunn's Dover Reservoir is
chockful of H2O. I've NEVER seen water here in 10 years.

At the corner of Hwy 85/WCR 108 SE corner (you can't miss it!) before the
bridge that crosses what used to be a dry Lonetree Creek. This private
area has a riparian ribbon that extends NW to SE for one mile across
section; we (Scott Rashid team) get access to it each Nunn Christmas Bird
Count. Great for owls (Great Horned, Eastern Screech, Long- and
Short-eareds).

It looks like Lonetree Creek washed out from where it crosses WCR 108 (west
of Hwy 85) all the way to Dover Reservoir. Similar to Owl Creek drainage
crossing CPER up the road.

Hey Scott--FYI it is the entire basin surrounded by those trees.

I wonder what surprises we might see here this fall migration ... :-)

[cobirds] Re: "Birding Makes The Cover of Sports Illustrated!"

2012-07-25 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
If you wish a copy of the aforementioned SI birding issue cover ... here's
how:

"Gary, I was wrong in my earlier email. We have a site (sicovers.com) where
you can purchase a 11x 14 copy of that for about $20. Unfortunately, it's
not currently on the site but our photo rights person is adding it in the
next day or two (you're not the first person to ask). So bookmark that
site, go back to it on, say, Friday and you should be all set. If not, let
me know and I'll figure out why it's not working.

Apologies for that email earlier. I didn't realize covers were different
than photos that appear in the mag.

Thanks.

[cobirds] Re: Question: Burrowing owls anywhere?

2012-09-26 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Not too many Burrowing Owls around this time of year. There was one at WCR
100/WCR 33 .25m E of intersection on WCR 100 on N. Also, one at WCR 96/37
about .5m S on WCR 37 on W. WCR=Weld CR

At DIA loop there are a few:
BURROWING OWLS at the prairie dog town at 3.4 miles east of Tower Road &
96th avenue.
BURROWING OWLS (two) along Gun Club Road at 0.5 miles south of Colfax
Avenue and (four) at the northeast corner of E470 & 6th Avenue.

I presume some still remain on the many Pawnee NG dog colony sites.

[cobirds] Speaking of Hereford Ranch/Cheyenne

2012-10-24 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
I joined up with the Audubon trip to Hereford Ranch last Saturday. We
were treated by Dr Hale (Owner) with access to the western portion of the
property accessing Crow Creek riparian corridor from (new) Campstool Road
(water treatment plant on west side) to the Hereford Reservoir two miles to
the west. Dr Hale said call them up if you wish to access this section of
Hereford Ranch. Dr Hale was great leader shared the history of the ranch
and you can tell by his passion how much he loves the ranch.

Once you get permission (http://wyomingherefordranch.com/contact.htm) to
access--you take Old Campstool Road (dirt road just before (.2m) Hereford
Ranch driveway on west) about .5m (or 1.0m) to two gated entrances. Open
and close gates behind you--even the interior ones. They own property from
the Water Treatment fence line all the way to the reservoir about a two
mile hike along Crow Creek.

I was tracking the birds during the trip:

Canada Goose Mallard Red-tailed Hawk Belted
Kingfisher Downy Woodpecker Northern Flicker
*Red-bellied
Woodpecker* Blue Jay Black-billed Magpie Common
Raven Horned Lark Black-capped Chickadee Mountain
Chickadee Red-breasted Nuthatch *Eastern Bluebird (2)*

Goldfinch House Sparrow

[cobirds] Lapland Longspurs/Nunn

2012-11-05 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
There are 2-4 Lapland Longspurs hanging around with Horned Larks along WCR
33 between WCR 100 and WCR 98. I take walks regularly there and have heard
and seen them on almost every visit--usually mornings but I've seen them in
afternoon, too. I walk from WCR 100/33 south about .5m or so--prairie dog
colony on west.

They are also probably with the Horned Larks on WCR 100 near WCR 31
intersection SE field (large); and along WCR 100 (flying between both
sides) between WCR 27 and WCR 23.

The approach I use in locating them are:
1-Know what a Horned Lark sounds like; listen for a different call (to me a
three-note cricket/rattle sound) <-- this would be "your" Lapland Longspurs.
2-Find Horned Larks
3-Shut off car; get and walk around listening primarily for the two
distinct calls
4-Once you know how they sound they are easy to physically follow and find
on ground/road
5-Best times seem to be during or after inclement snow weather--here they
love the melting roads. I call Horned Larks "storm troopers"--the worst the
weather the more you see ... :-)

There are many other usual haunts up on the CPER grounds north of Nunn.

[cobirds] Raptor Alley Results/Nunn

2012-11-13 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
A small group of "hardy souls" took a trip up Raptor Alley on
Saturday--finishing up just as the snow began to fly. Quantity low but
quality was usual.

Golden Eagle
Prairie Falcon
Northern Harrier
American Kestrel
Red-tailed Hawk
Rough-legged Hawk
Ferruginous Hawk

Special treat Lapland Longspurs--about 16-20+ along WCR 100 between WCR 27
and 23--a usual hangout. We had mixed flock above us which probably had
dozen or so in it. Also, a new prairie dog location at same location on
southside of WCR 100 in middle of open ag field--due slightly southeast of
lone tree in field on north. One I was not aware of until the weekend.
Didn't see the earlier reported Nunn Common Redpoll.

Timnath Reservoir, Woods Lake and Windsor Lake had nice waterfowl
assortment--Woods Lake having six Least Sandpipers and lone Greater
Yellowlegs.

[cobirds] Re: Little Gull at Windsor Lake (Weld) on 2Dec2012

2012-12-03 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

I was unaware of the Little Gull when I was at Windsor Lake (10AM-ish) ...
darn ... that being said there were "zillions" of waterfowl primarily
Common (boat load), Red-breasted (3) and Hooded (2) Mergansers, Common
Goldeneyes and Ruddy Ducks on Windsor Lake. Unfortunately I was looking
mostly at the loafing gulls on the ice shelf across the street on the west
pond (west of Hwy 257)-hundreds. I could only make out Ring-billeds,
Californias and Herrings.

FYI Drake Lake which usually hosts the Weld County Landfill gulls did not
have any birds yesterday though it did have some ice for gulls to land on.

[cobirds] Common Redpoll Returns/Nunn

2012-12-10 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Yesterday the Common Redpoll returned to our feeders. Also, yesterday was
"predator day" for our feeder birds--Merlin, Sharp-shinned Hawk and
American Kestrel--all looking for a "handout". Our neighborhood Lapland
Longspurs continue as well. This morning a female Downy Woodpecker--we
only get these "once in a blue moon".

Re: Rawhide Overlook

At times the security guards are slow to open gates at Rawhide Overlook in
the morning. If you walk up to the gate before the dam crossing entrance
you will see a telephone box with direct line to security shack on other
side of dam. You can use the phone to call security and request gate to be
opened--I've done it many times and they have accommodated the request.

Anyway to connect the two? Good database practice says "enter data

good folks at eBird can "flag" rare birds and send data to this list?
And you would think Google had the facility to be able to import it.

[cobirds] Re: Geolocater Birds and Records

2013-02-04 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
In the U.S. Forest Service world of remote mountain sites--during
annual physical inventory of mountain top radio equipment, if we know
the equipment is there, if we know it hasn't been replaced in year
previous, if a press-to-talk signal to mountaintop equipment is
successful that constitutes an "electronic touch" of that equipment so
we don't have to physically visit mountaintop and see the equipment.
It took us awhile to convince our auditors but they bought in after
understanding and exhibit.

So, if a electronically tagged Albatross happens to travel into our
"airspace" and someone notices it on tracking website ... I say "it's
a bird (and a record)" ... :-)

I've had "airspace" yard birds difference being I physically saw them
flying overhead.

[cobirds] Tuesday Morning Birders Info??

2013-02-04 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Some birders are inquiring how do they get in touch with the Denver-
area "Tuesday Morning" birder group? I looked around here:

http://dfobirders.org/wordpress/denver-field-ornithologists/field-trips-and-counts/tuesday-birder-count-reports/

and could only find reports of Tuesday trips (2011 last posts). This
group still exist?

If so, please post responses here so we all can see.

[cobirds] New Yard Bird/Nunn

2013-02-10 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
White-winged Dove (#111) on Saturday for three hours.

Funny story here, my birding "sixth sense" in action again. I
mentioned to my wife yesterday AM, "Lots of Eurasians let me see if I
can finally get my White-winged Dove", picked up binos looked at tube
feeders my next reaction to wife was "Holy , a White-winged Dove
is on one of the tube feeders!" This "sixth sense" of birding has
occurred before for me ... pretty cool when it happens.

Think it was Doug K on recent Greeley CBC who had similar experience,
three-digit Wild Turkey along river in circle.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings/Fort Collins

2013-02-25 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Just saw and heard flock of 33+ Bohemian Waxwings upon returning from
lunch at my Forest Service office on Prospect Rd/College Ave (just
west of). Heard them calling in tree on West Lake Ave (CSU Campus)
walked over there to look at them; after few minutes they flew SE.
