[Cooker] Here is the sound fix for via686a
Ok I've managed to find a way for sound to work properly, the kcontrol information to be correct and the arts daemon to not conflict with the via 82cxxx ac97 sound card. Please do this by default for any installation as sound will never work properly on this card otherwise. Install alsa instead of the oss/lite modules edit the modules.conf file correctly # ALSA native device support alias char-major-116 snd options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1 alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via686a # OSS/Free setup alias char-major-14 soundcore alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss then start the arts daemon (artsd) with the -r 48000 option to reflect the proper sample rate playback. If you don't want to include the alsa drivers by default then even with the -r 48000 option the arts daemon will fail. The other problems will be that all x-apps and the esd will playback sounds at higher pitch (44100 sample rates played at 48000) and kcontrol will not be able to recognise the sound information. Sound will only work sporadically. Please do this by default on installation as there are many of these motherboards around now. Re: [Cooker] reiserfs.o
Compile your own kernel. Yes, I know it sounds daunting, but the whole process is well documented (see the README). Remember to patch your kernel using this command: zcat linuxreiserfs.gz | patch -P0. get the linux kernel 2.4test9 at www.kernel.org get the linux reiserfs 2.4test9 patch at www.reiserfs.org ... and whatever you do, DON'T skip a step in the README. [Cooker] reiserfs.o
Hello cooker, Using mdk 7.2 rc 1 with reiserfs, I decided to upgrade to the latest hackkernel (2.4.0-0.35mdk) using rpm -Uvh and then following the instructions on your website for people using reiser file system, I installed the stock kernel via rpm -i and then did the depmod -a, etc, etc. I tried to mkinitrd and got the message "no reiserfs module found". Any ideas? TIA, Mike

Re: [Cooker] Kdevelop in 7.2?
You might be better of waiting until Kdevelop2 is released. It should be released at about the same time as KDE2. However, I did find an rpm for Kdevelop2 for the SUSE 7 distribution. I have not seen any source rpms though. Please let me know if you have any luck with this. Also, has anybody here had succes with getting KDE Studio to work. I keep getting dependency errors and asking for a kde-addon library. Mark

Anyway, what is > 255.240.0.0 in "your" notation? Well... since all addresses are 32 bits long with the first set of bits denoting the network and the last bits denoting the host, the IP/m clearly tells me the number of bits to use for "mask"ing the address to get either part. In your example: /12 (8 from first octet plus 4 from 2nd octet). In dotted decimal notation, most people need to convert from decimal to hex to see the number of bits in the mask. My ealier point was that decimal is not "natural" in a binary world... Besides, "/20" in Udo's case is faster to type and much less error prone than " 255.255.240.0") :^) Udo correctly responded that the mask is legal and required. It makes sense to me that the server should give out both the address and mask. Having a dhclient that refuses to accept _classless_ IP addresses indicates that the code is overdue for a rewrite to bring it up to date. Pierre

I think it does not make sense to talk about if and which netmask I should use, fact is that my netmask is legal and should work. Maybe this was a little bit confusing, I had put the netmask it in my ifcfg-tr0. But now I have removed it from there and pump take the netmask provided from the dhcp-server. This netmask 255.255.240.0 is the offical netmask which is used by all clients in our network. So I have to use this netmask too. In the past I think, the dhclient got the netmask correctly and was working well without special config-files. Should I now create a dhclient.conf ? or is this a bug in dhclient ? Udo

Since discontiguous mask bits (such as 0xfff0e011 aka 255.240.224.17 (now _that_ would have been confusing :^)) were deprecated several years ago, we should move on to using the clearer and more compact "/[0-32]" notation, like this: 172.16.0.0/0 (0x aka 0.0.0.0) 172.16.0.0/1 (0x8000 aka 128.0.0.0) 172.16.0.0/2 (0xc000 aka 192.0.0.0) 172.16.0.0/8 (0xff00 aka 255.0.0.0) 172.16.0.0/16 (0x aka 255.255.0.0) 172.16.0.0/20 (0xf000 aka 255.255.240.0) 172.16.0.0/24 (0xff00 aka 255.255.255.0) 172.16.0.0/32 (0x aka 255.255.255.255) to avoid all this mask confusion... [Cooker] character set in linux console
Hi, this problem was not fixed for a rather long time so I better report it here: On the linux console, special characters like german umlauts ä,ö,ü are not displayed, instead there is e.g. a sum sign for an ö. This looks like there is a wrong char set in use, but I know that I didn't modify a setting. Indeed there were still few bugs in RC1, so I think it would be useful to have another RC, maybe for 2-3 days before the "true" 7.2, what do you think about that? Anyway, if other developers and testers think that all has been fixed, don't care of my thoughs =:-D Bye and thanks for your great work! Claudio
[Cooker] Aurora
Tell me, MandrakeSoft people, why is it that when I do a CDROM install from CDs made from the latest ISO images, the bootup and bootdown are both using Aurora to display the process commentary, and it all looks quite wonderful, Whereas when I do an hd install from the latest 7.2beta tree, which is a much later development, I am only given the old line by line textmode bootup and bootdown process commentary? I have noticed that the kernel and hackkernel packages do not include the uncompress version of the linux kernel.
