[Cooker] OpenOffice.org-1.1rc3 performance issue
Hi all, has anyone notice that OpenOffice.org is very sluggish? I have: OpenOffice.org-l10n-en-1.1-0.rc3.2mdk OpenOffice.org-1.1-0.rc3.2mdk OpenOffice.org-help-en-1.1-0.rc3.2mdk OpenOffice.org-libs-1.1-0.rc3.2mdk The only thing that is not installed is the latest Bitstream Vera fonts as they weren't in my mirror when I installed OO.o. (it complained and I had to --nodeps it). I do have ttf-bitstream-vera-1.10-1 though. Redrawing the widgets with the install from the above RPMS is very slow - you can watch it happen. If I swap the old .rc3 back in (from OpenOffice.org) it's back to its spritely self. Could the lack of the Vera fonts rpm cause this? Or is is some other issue - like a compilation or linking error, or a bad patch? Please let me know how I can provide more information. Cheers! Paul. Oooh, and anyone else noticing the quietness of this list? Any reason, or is everybody taking the day off? :o) PD. OOooh, and I'm shifting to Sydney, Australia on Monday, so if I'll be a little out of touch over the next few days. PD.

An enhancement would be to have a not so verbose intermediate mode (maybe like Gnome or KDE, only showing the main steps). It would be an alternative to the progress bar all alone on this blue screen.

[Cooker] [Bug 4852] [drakxtools] drakboot dual boot Linux Mandrake is not Linux friendly
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4852 [EMAIL PROTECTED] changed: What|Removed |Added Version|9.2-4mdk|9.2-9mdk --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-12-09 03:38 --- still valid with Mandrake 9.2rc2 at installation... windoze is correcly identified, Mandrake 9.1 does not appear for initial configuration of lilo. I will try and reproduce completely the bug tomorrow. Installation detects previously mounted partitions and keeps the /mnt/ directories, nicely done ! -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: Facts : - drakboot is Windoze friendly and configures correctly lilo to take into account previous windoze installation - with an existing Linux partition (with MdK9.1), drakboot is not friendly and obliges to edit lilo.conf manually in the end (or at least do manual operations) What I wanted to do : - for installation of Mandrake 9.2 beta 2 I did not want to mess my MdK9.1 stable installation - hence I've dedicated a partition for fresh install of Mandrake 9.2 so that MdK 9.1 is preserved (if data is partitionned, my assumption is it's separated and hence safe !). That's what I did when some time ago I switched from Windoze and still gave a chance to revert easily, and it worked flawlessly being very Windoze friendly (I did not revert though, I've kept moving forward). - So I expected Mandrake 9.2 to cohabit with Mandrake 9.1 and easily revert, which proved more difficult than expected but worked in the end. My diagnosis is that drakboot makes the assumption that another Linux is in /boot and that taking into account another partition is not well managed hence this is more a request for enhancement than bug report). It could simplify life for the noobie (avoiding manual steps ). At first I pointed at lilo (see previous bug report http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4829), now I think it's more an enhancement of drakboot to exploit lilo features to the best : provide a simple strategy to detect previous versions of Linux, in the same way it detects windoze. Enhancement Proposal : - detection of another partition with Linux - configure lilo correctly, either way : . identify the mount point (e.g. /mnt/linux-0) and configure lilo to take it into account (may require to copy files - as I had to do - to local partition /boot...) . obtain previous configuration and adapt/check it (as partition naming may have changed in between, as was the case for me) The point is to use the latest install to take into account previous ones (of course there are other possibilities), as I tend to expect the latest release not to break anything (it lowers immediately my confidence in it). What do you think of it ?

Configuration does not make a difference between "Free non dégroupé" and "Free dégroupé", how do you select dhclient or pppd ? Well I think that both are launched : I'm with "Free non dégroupé" and dhclient is launched, it exits nicely though... - next configuring LAN shows a warning that it has already been configured (maybe it chooses eth0 when configuring sagem before LAN ? This warning makes the user uncomfortable, made me believe there's an error, when everything is correctly configured aftewards or nearly). [Cooker] KDesktop crash - if anyone has a bit of time...
Hi all, now I'm sure this will be resolved real soon, but I'm going a way on holiday next week and I *really* need to know that my users can see their floppy and cdrom icons, and their background while I'm away (and they aren't too familiar with the UN*X file system!). I believe that this situation is not a general Mandrake bug that affects a lot of people, but it has come about through fairly normal periodic updates from 9.1 to cooker. If anyone has a bit of time to look at the last errors I received I would be really, really appreciative! As I said in the bug report, I've reinitialized all pam files, and deleted *all* dotfiles in ~/, but the bug still occurs and spits out the .xsession-errors file I've quoted in my report. The machine has fully updated Cooker RPMS from this morning, but if anyone suspects any packages I can brutally reinstall that'd be great. The bug report is here: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4882 Cheers! Paul Oh, and before anyone starts telling me off about using Cooker with users, please understand that the machines in question have been completely stable apart from a few CUPS related errors and this one (okay, and a couple more, but they are gone now). And the benefits of the new 9.2 packages are excellent! PD

Buchan Milne wrote: Bryan Whitehead wrote: Thanks for the kick in the pants. Looks like autofs can do what I need. Looks like this "feature" slipped in during 9.0 (or 8.2) and I didn't notice. Now if only autofs would support direct mounts we'd be another step closer to Solaris... ;) Could you explain what it is/how it works? auto_direct allows you to assign a directory a specific disk/nfsserver when it is accessed. this means you can make any directory managed by autofs without having autofs control the parent directory. most common use of direct mount is /var/mail. This config wants "mail" in /var/ to be mounted from a nfs server, but you can't have "/var" managed by autofs. So autofs will watch the "mail" directory directly. When a program enters/opens the directory autofs will mount the directory from it's configured source. An auto.direct entry would look like this: /var/mail -actimeo=0 s383:/export/mail someone may say... "why don't you just keep in mounted??!?!". Because of stale NFS handles when servers go down. Even when the server comes back up the client may be hosed... if you have several hundred workstations this can suck real fast. NFS mounts should only be mounted when "in use". If no one is looking at /var/mail then /var/mail should not be mounted via nfs. Currently on linux we would have to change /var/mail to be a symlink to /net/s383/export/mail. However, this becomes a problem when applications decide to save the "mail folder" as /net/s383/export/mail. If we move our mail services to another server we'll have problems. But mail is just a simple stupid example... /usr/local is software that is installed by the SA. Many shops share this over nfs (very common at JPL) so each workstation can have new software by installing it on the server... auto_direct would look like this: /usr/local -rw s383:/export/opt/local having /usr/local as a symlink to /net/export/opt/local can screw up many things. For example, if a project compiles software on their workstation configure/makefiles and binarys can end up with /net/export/opt/local in them... resulting in huge problems when servers are moved, or decommissioned. -- Bryan Whitehead SysAdmin - JPL - Interferometry and Large Optical Systems Phone: 818 354 2903 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sorry, I wasn't clear. It was decided a while ago that packages which are patched by mandrake, can be called hack%name, because it's a hacked up version of the original. I think there was a cdrecord package which deserved that name. Most packages which are called hack%name are not much more then development releases from the projects cvs (hackabiword, hackeroaster), so the preferred name would then be something like k3b_0.10, or k3b_0.10cvs, like the gettext_0.12 package in contrib. Just compare it to sylpheed and sylpheed-claws, both codebases for essentially the same project. I don't really care of it should be k3b_0.10 or k3b_0.10cvs, but there are libpackages made from it also, and a libk3b_0.100 as packagename is rather confusing, while libk3b_0.10cvs0 sounds just a bit more sane :-) I can change it, that's not too much trouble. Re: [Cooker] [Bug 5566] [kdebase] New: use of proprietary menu location defeats the purpose of a standard Linux desktop

Well, even worse is the fact that by default, the menus in the two competing default desktops are totally inconsistent, and that they cannot be edited confortably and have both desktops reflect the changes. The menu system works around this deficiency. >No Linux distribution should expect third party > developers to create different versions of their installers to take care of all > the distributions out there. Such developers are few and far between, Mandrakesoft provides packages for the majority of the products the majority of the user base uses, and the community supports the users of proprietary software (in how to add entries to the menu). > The menu location should be standardized and the > KDE default location can be used by all Linux distributions. And what about users who use GNOME, WindowMaker, IceWM? Or, do you think it is more feasible to support 11 desktops/window managers instead of one menu standard (currently shared by Debian and Mandrake)? > If not, third > party software installers will not create links in the KDE "start" menu. Tough. The use of menudrake is covered in the documentation in the distro. > > I verified this with CodeWarrior 6 and there were no links created in the > Mandrake menus. And how do you propose ensuring that these menus do not get removed when the new ones are rebuilt? Sorry, but the problem is upstream. All the desktops should support the standards for menus as specified int he freedesktop.org specifications. Until then, it is impossible to satisfy everyone completely. Mandrake provides easy to use solutions for both strategies, but defaults to using a single consistent menu across desktops. If you install so much software that it is such a waste of your time to create menu entries, swap to using the original menus using menudrake. @resolution=invalid -- |Registered Linux User #182071-| Buchan MilneMechanical Engineer, Network Manager Cellphone * Work+27 82 472 2231 * +27 21 8828820x121 Stellenbosch Automotive Engineering http://www.cae.co.za GPG Key http://ranger.dnsalias.com/bgmilne.asc 1024D/60D204A7 2919 E232 5610 A038 87B1 72D6 AC92 BA50 60D2 04A7 * Please click on http://www.cae.co.za/disclaimer.htm to read our e-mail disclaimer or send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] for a copy. *

I think this release is very important for Mandrake. I think every release is important... Anyway, I have some fresh figures. I am running a Mandrake mirror, and a RedHat mirror. Traffic is equal these days, or mandrake is actually 5 % more for the last month than RedHat. This is quite an improvement for Mandrake compared to about half a year ago, where redHat was double of Mandrake. I think this reflects the success of MDK 9.1. best regards keld

This is very funny, because, _each_ release, this is the same story, people say that rcX is not good enough and we need a rcX+1. OK, I will assume that your router is then doing network address translation, you use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, which means that no icmp (ping) traffic should be generated by lisa to any machine outside your network. Thus, the only traffic that lisa could be causing is arp traffic for 255 nodes (which shouldn't fill the arp cache on any device designed specifically for this situation, and should not cause any weird behaviour), and portscans to machines which replied to the ping (which should also not cause a problem). > > They all plug into a 6-port hub which uplinks to the router which then > plugs directly into my cable modem. > > If you need any more information, let me know. I'll try disabling lisa > on my own machine to see if that makes any difference. If it really is lisa causing this, then we would have to disable lisa, since there is no way to prevent this if it is indeed the problem. However, the blaster worm would cause almost identical (except much higher traffic) traffic, and I have't seen any reports of linksys routers being rebooted by blaster.
