Went ahead and gave it a try. These messages are apparently only
a warning. The kernel will compile properly. I am currently writing
from the system booted with the new kernel.

Do you use a home-made kernel? Do the versions (kernel, headers,
sources, whatever) match?

Did you try to reboot?

I didn't get those errors but your message made me think about a note
Flavio Stanchina wrote about a symlink /usr/X11R6/lib64 the package
doesn't make.

I tried again: making the symlink and disabling int10. So far so good.

I don't understand the previous packages (.deb made with Flavio's
sources) worked very well without those tricks.

Those ATI drivers seem very well developped and the installer is
perfect...

Hi Goswin,

I got Openoffice from the original Debian-AMD64 site ! O.k., I admit, it was a
little tricky to install it, but it runs ! How did I do ?
Well, I downloaded the debs manually, then installed them with the
--force-overwite option. I first installed the openoffice-ia32-libs, then the
opneoffice.org-debian-files (as I remember, there was a site, which described
that more specific).

Look at my name in the mailing lists, somwhere I described, how I did.

Openoffice is working now, but I cannot upgrade due to the missing ia32-libs
(see above)
I think, they must exist somewhere, due they are mentioned in the
dependencies.

If someone is interested, how I managed to get openoffice run on this machine,
I will like to describe it again ! :)))

Best regards

Hans

And where did you get openoffice.org-bin from?

Those depends sound suspiciously like the OOo created by my
amd64-archive package. That one has a bug with sid since OOo has
different depends there.

There are no official OpenOffice packages in the AMD64 distribution, as far as
i am aware.

There exists a package though, that will provide all necessary 32bit libraries
+ OpenOffice, so you can run it as a 32bit application (no chroot needed).
This package is called something like "amd64-archive" and was provided on
this list by Goswin von Brederlow. Try to search for the thread ...

I am running OpenOffice 32bit with the help of this package.

Yes, both Kurt and I get the same thing for libc6.

> If yes, should I report a bug ?

I believe this is a known issue and cause by glibc being compiled for
/lib. Is it a problem or just some warnings when prelinking? There
should be no need to copy those binaries to another system so strict
compatibility there isn't relay needed.

The problem should resolve itself when glibc changes to multiarch
paths at the latest.

Re: Evolution doesn't start anymore because of a dbus problem

2005-08-26 Thread Ernest jw ter Kuile

Are you sure this is related to amd64 ? or even Debian ?
Maybe you would get a beter answer if you would search on the Evolution site.

Anyway, after a quick reading through your mail I would try :
- Remove package evolution-plugins;
- Start evolution;
- Search for and un-check evil option about sending a message to dbus;
- Re-install package evolution-plugins.

And don't you _ever_ touch that check box again ;o)

Alternatively figure out which of the many plugins is attempting the evil
deed, and ... shoot it ('rm' will work too).

If it doesn't help, sorry.

Ernest.

OPenoffice libs cannot be found

2005-08-26 Thread Hans
Hello,

when I try to install openoffice I get these message. Sorry, it is in German,
but this should be no problem.

Message:
apt-get install openoffice.org-bin
Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut... Fertig

E: Kaputte Pakete

Where are those libs ? They are not in Debian-AMD64.

Regards

Hans

Evolution doesn't start anymore because of a dbus problem

2005-08-26 Thread Michelasso
Hello,
I have had the really bad idea to check the option "send a d-bus
message" (or something similar) in the Evolution preferences and now
it crashes immediately at every startup giving me this message:

Failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon: Unable to determine the address
of the message bus
4949: arguments to dbus_connection_get_data() were incorrect,
assertion "connection != NULL" failed in file dbus-connection.c line
4029.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-BUS library.
4949: arguments to dbus_connection_set_watch_functions() were
incorrect, assertion "connection != NULL" failed in file
dbus-connection.c line 3320.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-BUS library.

** ERROR **: Not enough memory to set up DBusConnection for use with GLib

I cannot uncheck that option since the program crashes immediately; I
have looked in my .evolution directory for some preferences file that
I could modify to disable that option, but I haven't found nothing.
The only way I have found to have evolution working again is to remove
the package evolution-plugins, but in this way I am, of course, losing
all other plugins.

The dbus related packages I have installed are:

FWIW, I'm running a kernel.org 2.6.12.3 kernel on a dual AMD64 and it
has been stable for 22 days right now.

Downgrading dpkg will cause some trouble. You will have to remove the
'log' line from the dpkg config in /etc/dpkg/ after downgrading or dpkg
won't run anymore.

You can either:

apt-get install package/stable
or
apt-get install package=versionnumber

Well I have an Asus A8V Deluxe, which uses the VIA K8T800 chipset, and
everything works great for me so far. I doubt gigabyte did anything
wrong in the design that would make it not work.

The network on the asus is a gigabit marvell yuken pci chip, which works
fine. Some newer models use a PCIe model which requires a kernel newer
than 2.6.8 to work apparently.

Re: Error while compiling kernel....

2005-08-26 Thread jason

Hi,

I encountered a similar error. It appears to just be a problem with that
version of the kernel. Try kicking up to 2.6.13-rc6 or rc7. I bet it will
compile.

Quoting Tim Matthews <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

how are you compiling the debian kernel? with fakeroot or on your own.

you may need a few more .deb's installed.

Xen on amd64

2005-08-26 Thread simon
I noticed there's an unstable release of Xen on xensource.org for amd64. Has
anyone tried this? I have an amd64 box I want to use as a dev system, running
64-bit Debian, but I need to develop a small custom distro for a thin client
system. I thought maybe I could install Xen and then put AMD64 Debian and a
32-bit-something-else on it.

Ok, I solved: I had a problem with the libraries in /usr/X11R6/lib and
/usr/X11R6/lib64; now the server works correctly (commenting out

Re: dpkg-architecture issues/vmware

2005-08-26 Thread simon
I did have 1.10.28 from sarge, but I upgraded gcc to build a package earlier. I
will change the link to point to the right one.

I got dpkg from amd64.debian.net unstable, I think. But I may be wrong.

Thanks for your help.

Also - forgive the newbie question - but can someone tell me how to 'downgrade'
a package? Is it a matter of removing it completely then picking the right apt
source to install from?

The high quality uses another compression method, when I remember
correct. And that one is broken in Debian since KDE 3.1.4:-(
