jessie: USB Optical mouse not powered after resume

2015-05-27 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
[CC me please]

Hi folks,

I am trying to diagnose why my USB mouse wont get powered up (DELL
Optical mouse) after resume. It used to work just fine on wheezy
(amd64).

Here is what dmesg says after resume:

[ 5022.967737] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[ 5022.979881] usb 4-1.3: new low-speed USB device number 5 using ehci-pci

If I unplug/re-plug the mouse:

usb-:00:1d.0-1.3/input0

Then everything is back to normal.

For reference, I am using a DELL Vostro 3750, jessie amd64 (uptodate).
USB Mouse is using the USB 2.0 port (not one of the USB 3.0 port).

Thanks,

poor wifi connection

2014-05-26 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
[CC me please]

Dear all,

I am trying to diagnose why my wifi connection is so bad from my
current laptop. If I reboot into windows 7 (default OS when shipped)
everything is working nicely.

I followed [*] and the output is given at:

http://pastebin.com/h2Mc1rF3

I do not see anything abvious from the log file. Does anyone see any
obvious mistake (misconfiguration) I could have ?

Specify "mail from:" in postfix + relayhost

2012-04-12 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  I've just finish setting up a postfix + relayhost conf thanks to :

http://wiki.debian.org/Postfix#Installing_and_Configuring_Postfix_on_Debian

  This works great. However using the `mail` command line interface I
can only send email from my main gmail adress. I did a small test
using `telnet localhost 25`, I can then specify any of my
pre-configured gmail adress (eg @free.fr).
 However using telnet is pretty tedious. Does anyone knows what is the
command line option to specify the 'mail from:' information ?

Thanks much,

I choose to switch back to debian/stable after a broken update in testing.

ACPI I/O resource conflicts with ACPI region SMBI

2011-10-03 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Dear all,

  I am trying to install a debian stable on my new DELL Vostro 3750.
the d-i went perfectly fine. However when booting up debian, boots
stops at:

Waiting for /dev to be fully populated
[10.133655] ACPI I/O resource :00:1f.3 [0xefa0-0xefbf] conflicts
with ACPI region SMBI [0xefa0-0xefaf]

All I could find was people complaining about this message in dmesg,
however in my case, booting simply stops. I cannot go any further.

Does anyone knows what I should try next to get passed this ?

Thanks

You should really keep windows on your toshiba for the moment. I had
to return mine after 6 month of using debian/stable. ACPI support is
just terrible, cooling fans were running 24/7.

'lvm/hpdesk/root'. From within the shell:

grub-install /dev/sda

but upon reboot the grub list is empty ...

Not quite there, but making progress

re-installing grub (lvm)

2011-06-05 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi all,

  After installing Windows 7, I lost my grub installation. I would
like to repair my grub installation. I prepared a bootable USB key
with a squeeze netinst iso. I can boot into 'rescue mode'. After
network autoconfiguration I can go to a shell, but when I type:

# grub-installer /dev/sda

It reports:

chroot: can't change root directory to /dev/sda: Not a directory

  Disk is simply: Win7 as primary partitation and the second one is
simply an LVM with /root, /home, / and swap (in this order).

Thanks a bunch !

Actually I never understood why people would want to install i386 when
amd64 is possible. Since from amd64 you can still run x86 code ... but
not the other way around. Is there a drawback when installing an amd64
kernel ?

This driver is just horrible ! It dumps tons of unused debug/warning
message to var/log. It makes the kernel ooops, connection drops
without notice. I am using it right now all I want to do is very very
simple: how do I build just a kernel module from source of a running
kernel.
I do have the source, I just want to make it the debian way until
linux 2.6.40 comes out with this exact driver.

Dear all,

I did that too. I convert the single entry 'John Doe / Mobile Phone /

Indeed that fixed the issue. I quickly hack an updated package:

This now works fine. I could sync phone entries with nice looking entry name.

Hi,

  I would like to import my contact from my previous phone onto a Noka

opensync (*). But again with no luck, USB interface is empty and
segfault. I tried using the bluetooth interface but syncml-ds-tool
simply segfault:

$ syncml-ds-tool -b **:**:**:**:**:** 11 --slow-sync text/x-vcard
contacts Contacts --wbxml --identifier "PC Suite"
** ERROR **: A disconnect event was received but there is no connected

aborting...

  I tried sending all contacts at once from the old phone (Sony

every sent to the Nokia E72.

Even with LAN access to your SVN server, try a svn-bisect and then
compare it to a git-bisect.

There is no going back to SVN, once you understand the whole
decentralized approach. git merge just works. I do agree that setting
up the git server to refuse most delete operation take some time and
tweaking.

I use kernel 2.6.37 and fglrx. I found that the driver in squeeze did
not support my card. So I simply used fglrx from unstable (it pulls
lots of xserver-* package from unstable).

BTW it would be really useful for everyone if you posted something like:

Actually the solution was simply to get the driver from unstable:

sudo apt-get install -t unstable  fglrx-control fglrx-driver fglrx-glx
fglrx-modules-dkms

It did pulls lot of update xserver-* packages but glxinfo/glxgears are
 working very nicely.

[Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series]

  I followed the steps for squeeze from the page:

  Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)

  According to the log file I have the following errors:

Maybe one thing. I have not been able to directly use a system that
was on a partition. VMWare has a tool to convert a physical system to
a virtual one.
For VirtualBox, I had to boot each system (WinXP&Win7) and use
disk2vhd to convert the running system to a virtual image.
VB recognize /almost/ directly the VHD file (you have to use
virtualbox-ose-fuse >= 4.0 to open the VHD image as filesystem).

I tried vmware once. When I realized the script needed root power, I stopped.

I moved to VirtualBox without regret so far. The version in debian
does not have USB & rdesktop, but that was not on my requirement.

VirtualBox support most images, but you can always use qemu to convert
your vmware to virtualbox images.

Watch out that for 6'bits sytem you need VT-x on Intel, one way to
know is executing this from a shell:

$ egrep '(vmx|svm)' /proc/cpuinfo

Re: upgrading linux kernel

2011-02-24 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Just:

apt-get install -t unstable linux-image-2.6.37-1-amd64

This should update your squeeze with the minimum (linux-base will be
upgraded). then reboot, select 2.6.37. You can always select 2.6.32
and then remove  linux-image-2.6.37-1-amd64.

For anyone interested in the story. All I had to do is remove : .zshrc_history*
There were some junk history files that caused all the above...

I am making some progress

$ ssh hpdesk hostname
hpdesk

however:

$ ssh -v -v -v mathieu@hpdesk /bin/sh
debug1: Sending command: /bin/sh
debug2: channel 0: request exec confirm 1
debug2: fd 3 setting TCP_NODELAY
debug2: callback done

debug2: channel 0: rcvd adjust 2097152
debug2: channel_input_status_confirm: type 99 id 0
debug2: exec request accepted on channel 0

... and then it stops right here

Still no login prompt

ssh login ok, no prompt

2011-02-22 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi all,

  I have two linux boxes. I can connect from one to the other but not
the other way around anymore. It seems to have happen after a apt-get
upgrade. I can `ssh target`, however it display the debian banner and
then stops. I cannot Ctrl-Z or Ctrl-C...

  Has anyone seen this before ? Using ssh -v -v -v does not reveal
anything nor does inspecting /var/log/auth.log on both machines...

Thanks

This is what I get when installing the package:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=613667

Looks like my laptop does not use APM anymore.

However it does not look like ACPI is supported:

$ find /proc/acpi/thermal_zone
/proc/acpi/thermal_zone

The directory is empty !

Dear all,

 I recently bought a new laptop (Toshiba L670). When using it for a
little while the CPU Fan is turning ON for no reason (IMHO). How do I
display temperature information on a latop ?
  I tried sensors-detect but it simply returned: "No sensors found!"

VMware Converter equivalent

2011-02-09 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi all,

  I recently bought a laptop with a microsoft windows 7 OEM OS. I
would like to convert into a virtual machine for later use in
VirtualBox.

* I tried using restore DVD, but upon installation within VirtualBox
it keeps on claiming an insane amount of disk space for installation
* I tried using VMWare Converter but the software fails miserably
during conversion (around 1% progress).

  Does anyone knows of any other alternatives software to convert a
physical machine to a virtual one ?

Thank you

This looks ok. Doing a file does not reveal anything. However using
hexedit I can find the strings: Apple_partition_map

This is somewhat my question: how do I know that ?

Again this is my question. Anyway I used dd and I can copy the iso image:

$ dd if=/dev/sr0 of=backup.iso
16386432+0 records in
16386432+0 records out
8389853184 bytes (8.4 GB) copied, 687.9 s, 12.2 MB/s

I'll try next to see if I can burn that iso now.

Thanks

Hi there,

Just for reference I gave up on icedove/thunderbird, it would simply
sit, do nothing and fill up 38% of my 4Gb memory for downloading a
folder of ~4000 messages.
I gave up on firefox/iceweasel a couple of weeks ago for chromium for
the exact same reason.

I am giving imapsync a try.

Just FYI, I finally decided to use thunderbird/icedove ... and it
worked like a charm (well it is *much* faster) ! I do not know why
evolution is so slow (this is the same DSL connection)...

Thunderbird was a blast to configure (assuming you know your gmail

eg: browser.cache.memory.capacity & mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks

GMail backup on debian

2011-01-17 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  Last week I decided to back up some of my mails from my gmail
account. I remember that there used to be gmailfs mechanism for this.
However the package is not available on my debian/squeeze anymore.
  I also tried using the imap service, using evolution, but it became
quickly a nightmare (it is just impossible to retrieve just a single
mail). I even selected 'Basic Headers' from the IMAP headers
preferences in evolution.

  What are other people using when there gmail mailbox is becoming big ?

Thanks !

Getting the memory used by a process

2010-12-08 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  I am trying to find out the memory used by a process (peak memory
actually). I found the command 'pmap', howeverI cannot find a way to
retrieve the PID of a process when execution time is really short. For
instance, this does not work:

/bin/ls && (ps ax | grep ls)

  Any other tool, other than pmap to do find that information ? I
would also like to avoid something as heady as valgrind --tool=massif.

Thanks !

oops while answering your email, I ifdown'ed eth0 just to make sure it
was up. I forgot to ifup'ed it back.

$ netstat -nr
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0   U 0 0  0 wlan0

0.0.0.0 192.168.0.254   0.0.0.0 UG0 0  0 wlan0

$ ip route show
192.168.0.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.21
192.168.0.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.19
default via 192.168.0.254 dev eth0
default via 192.168.0.254 dev wlan0

This is a small ppc mac mini, connected to a freebox (french tivo). I
thought I could use eth0 for upnp (mediathomb), while having wlan0 for
remote ssh session from my laptop...

How do I configure prefered route ?

Thanks again,

Hum... this is bad, it looks like I am using wlan0

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
192.168.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0   U 0 0  0 wlan0

192.168.0.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.21
default via 192.168.0.254 dev wlan0

Is there a way to change the default. Otherwise I'll comment out the
wlan0 section in etc/network/interfaces

Mounting cdrom ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1 / ISOFS: changing to secondary root

2010-08-22 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  I have been experiencing a very bizarre behavior in the last couple
of weeks. I am running a lenny system with kernel 2.6.32 from backport
and for some reason I cannot mount cdrom from the gnome session
anymore.
  From the command line, it works after much struggle (*).

  What is odd is:
- DATA CD with ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A are fine, no problem
(typically my bootable cdrom of lenny) (3 different cd tested)
- DATA DVD are fine, no problem (3 different dvd tested)
- DATA CD with ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 1 seems to
all have the same symptoms on my machine (4 different cd tested). They
do load perfectly fine on a windows machine.

The only bug that ressemble those symptoms is:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=583949

However I find it hard that so few people would experience that.

Any suggestion ?

Answering myself, one need to use the name in the VG column (not the /dev id):

  sudo lvdisplay Debian
  sudo vgchange -ay /dev/Debian
  sudo mount /dev/Debian/home /tmp/test

Cheers

mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'

2010-08-21 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  I am trying to mount an IDE disk from an old (broken) machine. I am
using a USB adaptor. After attaching the IDE disk to the USB adaptor,
I cannot do anything with the disk.

dmesg reveal:

[13927.196346] usb-storage: device scan complete

[13930.050267] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 100200

When trying to mount, I get:

$ sudo mount  -t auto  /dev/sdb7 /tmp/test
mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'

But it looks like I do have a LVM2 filesystem on this disk:

$ sudo pvs
  PV VG Fmt Attr PSize PFree
  /dev/sda2  dhcp-67-183 lvm2 a-   148.81G0
  /dev/sdb7  Debian  lvm2 a-17.89G0

Same issue with :

$ sudo lvdisplay /dev/sdb7
  Volume group "sdb7" not found

Any suggestion greatly appreciated !
Thanks,

BTW make sure to umount the usb key first.

I used the simple solution you were previously suggested:

http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s03.html#ftn.id318505

It did work pretty well for me. The tricky part is to understand that
zcat should be applied on the whole filesystem, not the first
partition:

zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdX

which is not:

zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdX1

Checking burned image is ok

2010-07-27 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  I am looking for a way to check I did burn my debian installer iso
properly. I am trying:

$ cmp /dev/cdrom debian-505-powerpc-netinst.iso

  This works on CD-RW, but it fails on CD-R with the following:

cmp: /dev/cdrom: Input/output error

Has anyone seen this before ? How else could I check the CD-R is
actually properly burned ?

Thanks !

On a recent DELL Opteron I had to use a squeeze installer (kernel

Are you using squeeze ? If so I would suggest:

http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/nvidia-kernel-dkms

-> apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms

I am using module-assistant on my debian lenny box, but this require
some tweaking.

setting XKBLAYOUT to gb in squeeze ?

2010-07-15 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  I am wondering if anyone has been able to setup XKBLAYOUT properly
on debian/squeeze. I am reading

http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/InputHotplugGuide

  It says:

$ grep -C 3 -i xkb /etc/default/console-setup
-> return nothing on my computer.

Reading the file it seems I actually need to change
/etc/default/keyboard instead, so I did:

$ grep -C 3 -i xkb /etc/default/keyboard
# /etc/init.d/hal restart

# The following variables describe your keyboard and can have the same
# values as the XkbModel, XkbLayout, XkbVariant and XkbOptions options
# in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="gb"
XKBVARIANT=""
XKBOPTIONS="terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"

# If you don't want to use the XKB layout on the console, you can
# specify an alternative keymap. Make sure it will be accessible
# before /usr is mounted.
# KMAP=/etc/console-setup/defkeymap.kmap.gz

As specified, I did rerun the hal deamon:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart
Restarting Hardware abstraction layer: hald.

$ lshal | grep xkb
-> return nothing

If I look at the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I can see something weird:

...
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Dell Dell USB Keyboard"
(type: KEYBOARD)
(**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev"
(**) Option "xkb_model" "pc104"
(**) Option "xkb_layout" "us"
...

I also tried :

  dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

and I explicitely specify dell USB keyboard, it then picks up that my
keyboard is 'gb' style and not 'us', but the change has no effect even
after a gdm restart.

Any advice ?

Thanks,

Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.

2010-06-22 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi,

  I updated gcc-snapshot this morning, it updated locales, and then I
realize something went wrong. When I start a gtk app I get warning:

(process:5389): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.

I thought I could just reconfigure locales:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
[sudo] password for mathieu:
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = (unset),
LC_ALL = (unset),
LANG = "en_US.UTF-8"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by
another process: Resource temporarily unavailable

Does this rings a bell to anyone here ?

debian stable + nvidia driver

2010-06-09 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

   Has anyone installed a debian stable + nvidia driver recently. I am
stuck with linux kernel 2.6-26, I do not understand exactly what is
going on with backports:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/linux-headers-2.6-amd64

  I even tried moving to the linux image in testing, but udev
apparently changed a lot, so I had to revert the change (I do not
remember the exact error).

  Anyway, I went back to installing a stable 5.0.4 with linux 2.6.26
and installing nvidia-kernel-2.6.26, I discover the driver
173.14.09-5v (stable/non-free) did no support my card (heavy
flickering on any action).

  I then tried to compile the nvidia-graphics-drivers on my amd64,
since it now requires ia32-libs  (>= 20090804) [amd64]. I do not care
about any ia32 stuff, so I simply remove all references to ia32 from
the debian/control file and then compiled it by hand:

  dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -uc

  All seems well until depmod exit with a 1 error code. Where can I
see what is going on ? Is there a log ?

Thanks,

Boot order / Grub / USB installer

2010-06-04 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  I am trying to install a stable debian 504 using an USB key. Here is
what I did:

$ wget
http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-amd64/current/images/hd-media/boot.img.gz
$ wget
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.4/amd64/iso-cd/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso
$ zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdd
[remount cycle]
$ cp debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso /media/Debian\ Inst

However after installation it looks like grub switch its internal hd0
/ hd1 (device map file) in between /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1.
I had to manually invert them, re-run grub-install.

This happen on a DELL Precision WorkStation T7500.

Does this ring a bell to anyone ?

I think those instructions are deprecated. If you are using current
non-free you have to do something like:

apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms

It should automatically build the latest nvidia driver for your running kernel.

Affordable big endian machine to run debian

2010-05-26 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

  For a toy project I am looking for a big endian machine where I
could run debian on it (of course!). I tried using qemu + a powerpc
image but running a C++ compiler / linker was extraodinarly slow.
  G5 is just way to expensive for me. If possible I would like to
avoid having to buy a used machine on ebay. Can I find something in
the range [1000$ - 1500$] ?

Thanks a bunch !

VMWare Player as debian package

2010-03-22 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hello,

  Has anyone tried to package VMWare-Player as debian package ? I am
not able to find anything up-to-date for things related to vmware. I
am not very incline to run the shell (.bundle) script as root.

Thank you,

Ps: no flame please, I was given a vmware image.

I do not understand your question since XML is supposed to be 'human
readable' format. However I have recently uploaded a package that
allow opening an XSD file as tree:
