I suffer many other bugs with these devices, all of them related to the inhability to follow AP frequency changes in the 5 GHz band, but this one does not seems related to the wifi itself. When the bug triggers I can send and receive packets. Only sending arp messages seems to be missing. For example have you tried in a Windows laptop with the correct device drivers? Because you even might not be using the correct device drivers! I can't test the devices in Windows because I have no Windows here, I dont use windows either. But most manufacturers give correct drivers for them. but I have four dongles, from two different manufacturers, all of them with the MT7612U chip in it and all of them load the mt76x2u module when plugged, so I must conclude they are using the correct device driver/module. The problem exists with all the four dongles. This is not necessarily true. I recently bought a (chinese) wifi adapter (atheros chip) that was recognized as mediatek. The moment I linked the correct drivers with the device it worked properly.

Diagnosing one of my several problems with WiFi in Debian I found a problem this time not related to the WiFi connection itself, but I don't know how to get the culprit... Anyone can point me in the right direction? Symptoms: From time to time I lost Internet connection for a period of about 5 to 30 minutes. It happens at least two or three times a day. Setup: Desktop computer (192.168.1.2) running Debian Buster amd64 with current kernel 4.19.98-1 connected via WiFi to router / gateway (192.168.1.1). Wifi Adapter is MT7612U from Mediatek. While connection is lost: - I can launch wavemon and I can confirm the WiFi adapter is still connected and sending / receiving packets and beacons. - Arp command shows the gateway HWaddress as incomplete. - Launching Wireshark in the desktop computer I can see incoming packets from other devices, but I can also see a "Who has 192.168.1.1? Tell 192.168.1.2" ARP requests from my desktop every second. At first glance it seems the gateway isn't responding to my arp requests, but... - I can see arp queries from the gateway to my desktop, and I can see the responses, but they seem they never reach the gateway. - Forcing network activity with my smartphone, I can see also arp requests from the smartphone answered by the desktop, but a ping from the smartphone to the desktop machine gives no response. Of course the phone can use internet without any problem using the same gateway. - If I unplug and replug the WiFi adapter everything works again. If I left the WiFi adapter plugged, eventually I get an arp response from the gateway, and everything works normally again. This may take up to 20-30 minutes. Only once the wifi connection crashed after several minutes. It seems that when I lost connectivity I can't sent arp messages but I can receive them. They are sent, I can see them with Wireshark, but it seems they will never get outside the machine. I searched for known bugs but I wasn't able to find anything, only a message from an Ubuntu user aparently having the same problem, but with a different WiFi adapter and kernel version (4.18 I think): https://askubuntu.com/questions/1122683/no-internet-access-after-random-intervals-in-ubuntu-18-04-2-lts The problem is now I don't know how to get the culprit of this bug. Is the kernel? Is the Mediatek kernel module? I would check the `dmesg` command output. If there are erros there then they re coming from the kernel. The best solution would probably to do a fresh install. But if you want to take the chance, here is a trick to downgrade: https://wiki.debian.org/SystemDowngrade Interesting I thought you could downgrade with the package manager. from the looks of it you end up with an unstable system. But I no longer at all to have a graphical user interface ( I use GNOME as a graphical interface - desktop environment ) - Is the docker to blame? Delete it? But as of course on a portable notebook the cable-bound network interface is not always connected, it is a additionally also managed by NetworkManager. Hostname resolution takes place through systemd-resolved, that is, /etc/resolv.conf is a symbolic link to /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf . This all works fine so far, but when the cable-bound interface is not connected (that means, when NetworkManager de-activated the connection), the nameservers defined for that connection in the systemd-networkd configuration file are still in the active systemd-resolved configuration, as can be seen in the file /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf and in the output of "resolvectl status". Though this is - at least in my case with maximum of three nameservers - only a cosmetic problem, my goal is that the nameservers defined for the cable-bound connection disappear from the active systemd-resolved configuration when the cable is disconnected. Is it possible to realize such a combination of NetworkManager and systemd-networkd/systemd-resolved? For example this is how my config looks like ``` allow-hotplug wlx000f00bf4a3f iface wlx000f00bf4a3f inet static address 192.168.1.71 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.254 wpa-ssid ssid-name wpa-psk e8918bce6980814557b664fb52bda4d342174d2a2c95dd06078d7a29851de799 ``` Hope this helps. -- Regards, Nektarios Katakis

If you have issues with all the input hw I totally wouldnt suggest on proceeding with any further installation of software. You can check for the hw issues on the dmesg output (the kernel has really good messages that are easy to search online) and syslog files (as another answer suggests). For all I know you might have failing hardware that you want to detect earlier rather than later. Most likely though you ll be missing firmware/drivers. Regards, -- Nektarios Katakis

iptables firewall and web sites not loading
Hello, I am running an iptables firewall on an openwrt router I ve got. Which acts as Firewall/gateway and performs NATing for my internal network - debian PCs and android phones. All good but specific web sites are not loading for the machines that are sitting behind the home router. When attempting on the browser (firefox but tried different ones) the browser stays at `Performing a TLS handshake to bitbucket.org`. wget has similar results: ``` wget https://bitbucket.org --2019-12-09 22:07:32-- https://bitbucket.org/ Resolving bitbucket.org (bitbucket.org)... 18.205.93.0, 18.205.93.1, 18.205.93.2, ... Connecting to bitbucket.org (bitbucket.org)|18.205.93.0|:443... connected. ``` When doing a tcpdump on the router side I can see some initial TCP session establishment and then nothing: ``` tcpdump -vvvi br-lan port 443 | grep bitbucket.org tcpdump: listening on br-lan, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 262144 bytes 192.168.2.168.54440 > bitbucket.org.443: Flags [S], cksum 0xb3a3 (correct), seq 2816225641, win 29200, options [mss 1460,sackOK,TS val 15744661 ecr 0,nop,wscale 7], length 0 bitbucket.org.443 > 192.168.2.168.54440: Flags [S.], cksum 0x5c8d (correct), seq 1149625734, ack 2816225642, win 26847, options [mss 1460,sackOK,TS val 4256708721 ecr 15744661,nop,wscale 7], length 0 192.168.2.168.54440 > bitbucket.org.443: Flags [.], cksum 0xf33d (correct), seq 1, ack 1, win 229, options [nop, nop,TS val 15744683 ecr 4256708721], length 0 192.168.2.168.54440 > bitbucket.org.443: Flags [P.], cksum 0x58a5 (correct), seq 1:221, ack 1, win 229, options [nop, nop,TS val 15744684 ecr 4256708721], length 220 bitbucket.org.443 > 192.168.2.168.54440: Flags [.], cksum 0xf211 (correct), seq 1, ack 221, win 219, options [nop, nop,TS val 4256708810 ecr 15744684], length 0 bitbucket.org.443 > 192.168.2.168.54440: Flags [P.], cksum 0x9998 (correct), seq 2897:3668, ack 221, win 219, options [nop, nop,TS val 4256708810 ecr 15744684], length 771 192.168.2.168.54440 > bitbucket.org.443: Flags [.], cksum 0x4e08 (correct), seq 221, ack 1, win 251, options [nop, nop,TS val 15744705 ecr 4256708810,nop,nop,sack 1 {2897:3668}], length 0 ``` Of course doing a wget from the router itself works fine as it also works fine on my desktop if I do dynamic port-forwarding with eg. `ssh -D 1050 router` (and configure of course firefox to use it). I m not sure what might be wrong here tbh. Of course other (most) sites work fine without dynamic forwarding or anything. I am attaching the output of `iptables --list-rules` for whoever is patient enough to read. But I downloaded for testing firefox 70.0 from mozila web site and same behavior exists. Font size for a specific site persists across reboots of the software. You definitely need in `about:preferences#privacy` to have `History>remember History` enabled. Otherwise it doesnt work even in the old versions! Regards NK.

Which simply means it installs various other packages. Metapackages are built for convenience to install things like desktop environments or linux kernel. If you remove those then you might remove other dependencies or the whole desktop. Definitely you wont be able to update the desktop. Easy solution if disk space is not an issue is to leave it alone. Difficult solution is to built your own metapackage that includes only the programs you need as described here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MetaPackages Regards Nektarios Katakis.

Re: August 10, 2019
You should check the debian documentation pages for hw support https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch02s01.en.html If some of your hardware is not mentioned there is a serious posibility that it wont be recognized from the OS. The most common firmware missing are graphic cards and wireless cards. Some are packaged in the non free repositories https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList. Tbh the errors there don't look good but not serious either. If the related output from `iwlist scan` shows only 2.4 Ghz networks (it maybe detecting only networks in the 2.4 GHz - if your nic is old). `lshw` output might be of use if you know what hardware you have in the laptop as a driver/device mismatch might cause the device not work very well (I ve seen it once only with usb wireless adapter). I m using an old PC. I wouldnt suggest a less powerful box as you will run out of ram. If you need fanless checkout an intel nuc. Debian should run fine with it although I think it will need some drivers from the non-free repos. Regards, -- Nektarios Katakis

You re not mentioning what software you re using to connect to wifi. For your case I would check 2 things: 1) `dmesg` output to check if you see any errors from your network card driver or if its loaded correctly. 2) The output of `iwlist scan` to see if the network you re looking for is detected from the hardware. The only logs appearing are from KDE applications (nothing in X11 logs): ``` Aug 4 22:40:41 buldozer org.kde.kpasswdserver[958]: The X11 connection broke (error 1). Did the X11 server die? Aug 4 22:40:41 buldozer org.kde.kuiserver[958]: kuiserver: Fatal IO error: client killed Aug 4 22:40:41 buldozer org.a11y.atspi.Registry[1251]: XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0" Aug 4 22:40:41 buldozer org.kde.kglobalaccel[958]: The X11 connection broke (error 1). Did the X11 server die? Aug 4 22:40:41 buldozer org.a11y.atspi.Registry[1251]: after 947 requests (947 known processed) with 0 events remaining. Aug 4 22:40:41 buldozer org.kde.KScreen[958]: The X11 connection broke (error 1). Did the X11 server die? ``` Unfortunately my PC even worse gets stuck after that so I cant really tell if X11 is running. I hadn't used multiple x sessions for sometime (after I got used to multiple desktops) but this seems an issue.
