Does it help if you drop vesafb completely? radeonfb might break things
for sure, I am not sure about vesafb.

Nice workaround :)

Not nice :(

And there is no way to get VGA-0 back to work at this point? (apart from
unplugging/replugging it)

Bug#443111: laptop: can't set brightness from within X11

My current experience with xbacklight is that it indeed sets the
maximum brightness I can reach by playing with the brightness control
keys on my Dell X1. These can still be used but they only change the
brightness between 0 and the maximum set by xbacklight.

That probably changes a lot between laptops and graphics card
flavours.

I sometimes also experience weirdness like having to hit the backlight
increase key to.decrease the brightness..:-)

Bug#443151: xserver-xorg-video-ati: vt switching activates external VGA monitor [Radeon Xpress 200M]

2007-09-18 Thread Marcus Better
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.7.192-4
Severity: normal

This driver causes very strange effects with console switching, which
used to work correctly before. The system is an LG LE50 Express laptop
with Radeon Xpress 200M and an external VGA monitor connected.

1. When the system starts I have kdm on the laptop panel, and the VGA
monitor is in powersave mode.

2. I switch to a virtual console (vesafb). The laptop now shows
garbage in the form of some jumping horizontal coloured lines which
move and flicker a lot. The VGA monitor is now activated and shows the
console.

3. Switching back to X restores the laptop display. Both the laptop
and the VGA monitor now show the same X session (like in clone
mode). (But the colours on the VGA monitor are fine, in contrast to
what I had before, see bug #440174!) However "xrandr" just shows the
following, indicating that it isn't aware that the VGA display is
active:

~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 2304 x 1024
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.0*+
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9
S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

4. Switching to console now gives the same console correctly displayed
on both screens.

Yes, I think you're right, a structured formulation like this will make
maintenance must easier. I'll see if I can get the equivalent running
within the bounds of autoconf. I think what I'll do first is readapt
the existing upstream code, to reproduce the existing variable but with
better maintainability.

Then when that's ready upstream, I'll make the Debian patch for the %t
bits. I think I might keep the Debian patch explicit in debian/patches
rather than applying it to the tree in our git, to emphasise that it's a
Debian-only patch not appropriate for pushing back upstream.

Currently, McGehee is still working to improve the efficiency of his solar cells and their

loaded with neurotransmitters to the synapses in your brain, allowing you to
read this. While some researchers are trying to make similar molecular motors
scoot around and throw switches on electronic chips, it's hardly certain these
motors can ever do better than the electrical contacts that are routinely used
today. The future of biological nanotechnology may not be clear, but what is,

Yet, there remains a problem with the "nano" in both nanoscience and nanotechnology. "Nanotechnology's a term with
not too much new in it. It existed a long time ago," says Dai. Indeed, the characteristic length of bonds that have always
been under scrutiny in the molecular sciences is on the order of a nanometer. Chidsey adds, "I worry that the term confuses
people about what's important: the length scale itself is not important." Rather, it is the novel properties that structures
exhibit at the nanoscale that is. As Dai puts it, "We work on carbon nanotubes not because they are small, but because they
are interesting. They just happen to be nano." For all the problems with the term nanotechnology, though, it may have done
some good. Chidsey remarks, "Just as nanotechnology has attracted the attention of outsiders, it also stimulates us
internally: it provides a context for tackling and defining grand challenges-things so out there you wouldn't tackle them
otherwise."

Bug#397542: #397542: libxt6: Should include %l_%t.%c, %l.%c and %l_%t in FileSearchPathDefault

Uh, the variable got pretty big.

More formally, it's just a matter of, where %L is used, to also use
%l_%t.%c, %l.%c and %l_%t.

In a bash-like notation, that would be a matter of replacing %L with
{%L,%l_%t.%c,%l.%c,%l_%t}. The result is:

XFILESEARCHPATHDEFAULT='$(sysconfdir)/X11/%L/%T/%N%C%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%l_%t.%c/%T/%N%C%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%l.%c/%T/%N%C%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%l_%t/%T/%N%C%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%l/%T/%N%C%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%T/%N%C%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%L/%T/%N%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%l_%t.%c/%T/%N%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%l.%c/%T/%N%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%l_%t/%T/%N%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%l/%T/%N%S:$(sysconfdir)/X11/%T/%N%S:$(datadir)/X11/%L/%T/%N%C%S:$(datadir)/X11/%l_%t.%c/%T/%N%C%S:$(datadir)/X11/%l.%c/%T/%N%C%S:$(datadir)/X11/%l_%t/%T/%N%C%S:$(datadir)/X11/%l/%T/%N%C%S:$(datadir)/X11/%T/%N%C%S:$(datadir)/X11/%L/%T/%N%S:$(datadir)/X11/%l_%t.%c/%T/%N%S:$(datadir)/X11/%l.%c/%T/%N%S:$(datadir)/X11/%l_%t/%T/%N%S:$(datadir)/X11/%l/%T/%N%S:$(datadir)/X11/%T/%N%S:$(libdir)/X11/%L/%T/%N%C%S:$(libdir)/X11/%l_%t.%c/%T/%N%C%S:$(libdir)/X11/%l.%c/%T/%N%C%S:$(libdir)/X11/%l_%t/%T/%N%C%S:$(libdir)/X11/%l/%T/%N%C%S:$(libdir)/X11/%T/%N%C%S:$(libdir)/X11/%L/%T/%N%S:$(libdir)/X11/%l_%t.%c/%T/%N%S:$(libdir)/X11/%l.%c/%T/%N%S:$(libdir)/X11/%l_%t/%T/%N%S:$(libdir)/X11/%l/%T/%N%S:$(libdir)/X11/%T/%N%S'

All things considered, maybe XFILESEARCHPATHDEFAULT could be set this
way instead, much more readable:

XFILESEARCHPATHDEFAULT=
for i in "$(sysconfdir)" "$(datadir)" "$(libdir)"; do
  for j in %N%C%S %N%S ; do
for k in %L/ %l_%t.%c/ %l.%c/ %l_%t/ %l/ "" ; do

XFILESEARCHPATHDEFAULT="${XFILESEARCHPATHDEFAULT:+$XFILESEARCHPATHDEFAULT:}$i/X11/$k%T/$j"
done
  done
done

(which is actually the way I generated the bloat above)
(not tested within autoconf's quoting crazyness)

Samuel

2007-09-18 Thread Drew Parsons
Hi Samuel, the current XFILESEARCHPATHDEFAULT defined in
libxt/configure.ac is sufficiently different to the one you provided
your patch for, that I can't easily evaluate if it now meets your needs
or not. I think we do still need the patch, since the .c entries are
still missing.

Would it be possibly for you to review the current setting of
XFILESEARCHPATHDEFAULT and prepare a fresh patch if required? I'll
apply the new patch straight away if no one else objects.

x11-xserver-utils (7.2-2) experimental; urgency=low

You probably have 7.3+1, right? So it should be fine.

Ok, so I tried with the git snapshot from
git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati

but there are no changes compared to the debian experimental package.
One thing I just noticed though: x11-utils changelog doesn't mention
xrandr 1.2.2 it only mentions 1.2.0, so may I have a too-old xrandr?

Indeed, let me do another test and eventually I'll merge the bug into
the existing one (I seem to have overlooked that one while scanning the
buglist)

> You might want to try latest upstream git snapshot, TV-out should be

Ok.

I guess I wasn't clear: I don't get X11 to start when I use any of the
monitor-Options. Not even if I just include the one for disabling
Tv-Out. And when I start without them, xrandr _always_ just complains
about the VGA-0 being connected but no modes being available, no matter
what xrandr call I use (including xrandr --output S-video --off).

This seems very similar to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=439322

You might want to try latest upstream git snapshot, TV-out should be
disabled by default there, so you might get some modes from VGA by default.

And finally, it would be good to send the output of xrandr, with and
without with TV-out disabled *at startup* (either in xorg.conf or with a
recent driver where TV-out does not get enabled automatically).

I downgraded my X server, X video package and X input packages by
taking them out of /var/cache/apt/archives and installing using dpkg
-i. I would start by going dpkg -r libpixman-1-0 as that tells you
which package to downgrade first. Then when X starts it also tells you
which one has wrong version.

I'm back working again in X because of this now.

No, Xserver 1.4 needs pixman 0.9.5 unfortunately. And there is no known
fix yet (the upstream bug is not very active...). The debian bug
severity has been increased so that people are notified of it before
upgrading, that's not much from our side but it's better than nothing.
We already got 4 people reporting it, so you don't have to be sorry for
asking, this bug is very important :(

Yes, we will have to document this for the release of Lenny. But it
concerns much more than just the ati driver. At least intel, nv (for
G80) and mga will have randr-1.2 support too. And upstream is not
willing to fix the server, although it may even crash with the old
Xinerama syntax in xorg.conf. So I guess we'll have a common
documentation somewhere for all this, not only something in the NEWS
file of this driver.

See my blog too, especially http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/9846.html

Did you add a Virtual line to subsection Display to create a large
virtual screen and then place outputs in there with xrandr --output FOO
--right-of BAR

Well, I think the documentation should've been done before uploading to
unstable. At least some basics ;)

So, I played with xrandr the last hour, but I can't get it to create a
dual head setup :(

I'll write a new bugreport for that.

Sorry for asking here, but bugs.freedesktop.org has been down all day.

You should probably use the xbacklight tool (xbacklight package) instead
of the brightness control keys. The latter might change things in the
back of the driver (through the BIOS), causing possible problems.

There are some problems with xbacklight though, for instance bug #438969.

Have you ever tried with previous releases of xserver-xorg-video-intel,
for instance 2.0.0 or 2.1.0?

Bug#443090: Fix

2007-09-18 Thread Andy Parkins
Hello,

I've just experienced exactly the same problem, but with a bit of playing
I've got the pad working again.

I had two mice configured in my xorg.conf, one for /dev/input/mice and one
for the touch pad. I had "CorePointer" set for /dev/input/mice. When I
removed it and put it in the touchpad section, the touchpad sprang back
into life.

Bug#443111: laptop: can't set brightness from within X11

2007-09-18 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.1.1-4
Severity: normal

After upgrading from version 1.7.2-4 to 2.1.1-4 I can’t set the
brightness with the buttons supposed to set the brightness on my FSC
S7110. In VT I can but if I switch back to X11 the brightness is set to
the highest level. I can change the brightness from within X11 if I echo
the appropriate value to /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/LCD/brightness. But then
after hitting the brightness control keys on my Laptop the brightness is
switched to the brightest value available and nothing else happens. It’s
switched to the highest value too if I set the brightness in VT and
switch back to X11.

This doesn't happen if I downgrade to 1.7.2-4.

Regards,

Dirk

For the record I had tried a couple random keyboard layouts as well.
They didn't seem to make any difference.

I guess this will go away eventually. Thanks a lot for your time, I appreciate
it a lot.

Re-Opening, IMHO this information belongs into a NEWS file, as it
completely breaks existing XServer installation and its not mentioned
anywhere in the docs of the package.

I'm leaving the severity as it was for now, but if you think this
doesn't break many systems feel free to downgrade to important.

Andreas

Yes, please.

A couple questions:
* do you have an actual freeze of the machine, or just of the X server?
Can you ping/ssh from another machine?
* does it help if disable DRI? adding "Disable "dri"" to the module
section should do the trick
* what kind of machine is this, and what kind of monitors are plugged?

Yes thanks.

But unfortunately, I still can't reproduce. I tried your whole keyboard
config (except pc104), including the dvorak layout (which gives me a
headache :)), but I still get "5th row turns on" in current unstable :(

Left control (which has been mapped to caps-lock by ctrl:swapcaps) and
left alt. This is a laptop. It has two controls and two alts. Right alt
works as compose. Left control suffers this problem, right control does
not (I hadn't tried until now). The problem as seen from xkbwatch with
unstable is:

1)
a. press left control -> 6th row turns on
b. press left alt -> nothing happens (6th row is still on)
c. release all keys

2)
a. press right control -> 6th row turns on
b. press left alt -> 5th row turns on (6th row is still on)
c. release all keys

3)
a. press left alt -> 5th row turns on
b. press left control -> 6th row turns on (5th row is still on)
c. release all keys

4)
a. press left alt -> 5th row turns on
b. press right control -> 6th row turns on (5th row is still on)
c. release all keys

The only difference is that in my old setup the "nothing happens" in
test 1 was a "5th row turns on." That is the method I always use to
activate C-A combinations.

I hope this makes things clear.

Thanks,

Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.7.192-4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

today I upgraded my unstable system and with it came Xorg 7.3 including
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.193-3. After restarting the XServer I had a
garbaged display and couldn't access the second monitor-part. I'm
running a pretty usual Xinerama setup on a Radeon Mobility 9200, with
the external monitor being a CRT. I'm _not_ using the MergedFB mode as
that doesn't work reliably.

As you can see from this report I also tried to upgrade to the
experimental version, but that one doesn't have proper dependecies and
didn't upgrade the rest of X11. Obviously that rest is needed for the
experimental version, I got a segfault when trying to start X11 with
that.

So the only solution was to downgrade the whole X11 to the Etch version
(video-ati == 1:6.6.3-2) to get a usable system again.

I'm attaching my xorg.conf

I added ctrl:swapcaps to my config, downgraded xserver-xorg-core and
drivers to testing, downgraded xkb-data to stable. Then I upgraded them
one at a time up to current unstable, I haven't been able to notice any
difference when playing with ctrl and alt in xkbwatch. Could you please
clarify what you are exactly seeing when doing what in xkbwatch with
current testing (your old working setup) and current unstable (broken)?
Also, are you using the right ctrl or the left one, when trying to use
"ctrl+alt"?

experimental version, I got a segfault when trying to start X11 with
that.

So the only solution was to downgrade the whole X11 to the Etch version
(video-ati == 1:6.6.3-2) to get a usable system again.

I'm attaching my xorg.conf

Did X ever work on this board? If you switch to the vesa driver, does it
work better?

Hi,

this is caused by a change in 1:7.2.ds3-1 to drop the server detection
code, which actually dropped too much...
I think the following patch will help, and I'll commit something like
that once I've tested it. It sets the shared/default-x-server variable
to 'xserver-xorg', which should allow dexconf to work again (at least in
theory).

Cheers,
Julien

Yes, leds are broken, already reported at #442887, but keys should be
working fine apart from that.

Bug#443090: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: Touchpad not working since today's upgrade

2007-09-18 Thread Julien Valroff
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 0.14.7~git20070706-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

My touchpad do not work since today's Xorg upgrade.

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics was upgraded from 0.14.7~git20070517-2 to
0.14.7~git20070706-1.

USB mice work fine, and I can see the touchpad leads to activity testing with
evtest.

Both the touchpad and the buttons have no effect at all in X.

I can't see any interesting details in the Xorg logs.

Cheers,
Julien

Please send the whole output of 'xrandr' after reinstalling 1.9.99 so
that we see all available modes for each output. You can change the mode
of output FOO with something like
xrandr --output FOO --mode 1024x768 --rate 75

> Are these newer drivers likely to get fixed anytime soon or is the

I don't know about 1.4.7, it could be the last old-style MGA driver. But
1.9.99 will very very probably be fixed. It doesn't get as much
attention as Intel or ATI driver, but Tilman Sauerbeck has been taking
good care of it in the last month, so there's no reason why it would
change now. This RandR 1.2 driver is the future way to go, most drivers
are going this way now. MGA 1.9.99 is too young to be perfect, but it
should improve in the future. If you're really interested about this,
you might want to talk to Tilman directly, for instance on IRC.

Package: xorg
Version: 7.2-5
Distribution: Debian Lenny (testing)
Kernel: 2.6.22.6

Intel Driver:
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.0-2

After running apt-get dist-upgrade and switching my xorg.conf to use "intel"
instead of i810 (which no longer exists) I no longer can run at 1600x1200.

I have tried the 915 resolution 'hack' but to no avail.

My xorg.conf is shown below and my Xorg.0 log is attached and bzip2d.

Any help would be appreciated as the highest resolution I can achieve is
now only 1280x1024.

It appears the i810 driver is now obsolete and no longer supported so
reverting back is also not an option.

Thanks,

Justin.

Could you try xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.7.192-4 currently in experimental?

thanks,
Brice

Could you test the latest upstream git snapshot? Or just find me some
time to upload a new snapshot to experimental :)

The backtrace doesn't look broken to me... Debugging X without a second
machine with ssh access is quite hard, and your bug looks similar to
others already reported, and to upstream bug #12398
, so for now I don't
think there's a need for you to jump through hoops to get a better
backtrace.

Cheers,
Julien
