[Bug 187547] Re: nautilus eat memory, locks desktop

2008-03-29 Thread logus
I confirm the original bugreport. Can easily reproduce it on current
installation (nautilus 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu1) by cutting-and-pasting some
files (esp. jpg images - no svg's in that folders!) around bunch of
directories. Nautilus began consuming more and more memory, while eating
about 80-90% cpu; if left up leads to fully inaccessible machine with
oom-killer traces in syslog. After pkill'ing nautilus process, all files
moved by last action in nautilus seem to be in their destination dir
(that is nautilus starts leaking after actual file move/copy
operations).

[Bug 208162] Re: files gone from USB flash drive

2008-03-29 Thread eliash87
Linux Mint 4, based on Ubuntu 7.10. When I had that worst problem, where
all the files were gone, I used Ubuntu 7.10 upgraded from 7.04.

Steps to reproduce? H. I'd say it is not reproducible always, at
least not from my experience. But, as said, files seem to disappear some
times when I do cut/paste to and from USB flash drives. I am sorry if
the information I have provided is not sufficient to help solving the
issue.

Hmm. Actually I could try to reproduce the problem by moving files,
though... Later, then. If it is a problem of the file system handling,
it will likely be very different now that I have reformatted the drive
with ext2.

[Bug 198134] Re: evince not respecting default printer

2008-03-29 Thread Wendy
Using Evince Document Viewer 2.20.1 in Ubuntu Gutsy, I noticed that the
the default printer settings are ignored and when entered in the print
setup, are forgotten as soon as Evince is exited and re-entered.

My default printer (a Brother) is remembered by my other applications,
but not by Evince. The same about paper size (A4). I know it's easy to
open the Print Setup menu and change Any Printer to Brother... and
Paper Size from US Letter to A4, but hey, since other applications
can remember such basic settings, I thought, well, let's just ask.

Thanks for your attention. Kind regards,
Wendy

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

2008-03-29 Thread soxs
It seems to happen randomly, somtimes it works just fine sometimes it does not.
Since I updated 2.22.1 (which is 5minutes ago) I did not get this error again,
but I only rebooted once since then, and it usually happens only on
boot/xserver restart as far as I can say.
Will not post any info about ubuntu version anymore in the title.

[Bug 184547] Re: epiphany-gecko crashed with SIGSEGV while resizing fonts with Ctrl+MouseWheel

2008-03-29 Thread Sero
Apport never caught the crash an nothing was written to /var/crash.
However I got the Epiphany dialog that offers me to load the last
session that was interrupted due to the crash.

Anyway - I can not reproduce the crash anymore in Hardy. Maybe my
installation was not in a consistent state due to some updates that
didn't install properly first (Sorry for that). Or maybe it got fixed
meanwhile. Actually that's good news - the crash is gone.

Furthermore, the problem window exhibited another bug. After failing to

After closing the window, I was unable to reproduce this effect.

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-29 Thread Marc Baas
Right, then why isn't VLC listed as a possible application to launch
upon entry of a DVD player?

The only options I have in Nautilus are:
1) Open Movie Player
2) Open Folder
3) Do Nothing
4) Ask what to do. Which gives a list of the 3 previous ones.

So, how do I define VLC (or any other application for that matter) as my
preferred application to open upon inserting a DVD?

Still, I cannot select another player than Totem the way the system is
set up.

I'm starting to wonder why gconf-editor clearly has been redered
useless. Are you telling me that Gnome is supposed to restrain the user
to the default selection made by the devs? Excuse me for saying so, but
that would be worse than the products I abandoned because I didn't like
them.

So at this point I still have no way to set VLC as my default player for
launching when I enter a DVD.

If someone can enlighten me what it is I oversaw, please let me know,
but replying with facts that are incorrect doesn't solve the problem I
inducated.

There is a bug to solve here! In the forums people are already talking
about it, why not fix it? However you guys do it is not of my concern,
but I do want the same functionality, to say the least, that I had in
Gutsy. Now I'm looking at a downgraded system in certain regards.

Please consider the fact that the more you limit the user the smaller your
audience will be. The way things are now one cannot possibly change certain
parts of the configuration at all anymore. This is a bad thing for both Ubuntu
and the Linux community.
One can add functionality, improve it, but not take it out. That is a guarantee
for getting unhappy users. And that is bad news for the community, but also for
you guys.

[Bug 208701] Re: gnome theme manager crashed

2008-03-29 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 207809] Re: Screen brightness regulation malfunctions

2008-03-29 Thread Drascus
screen brightness remains at 100 %, no matter if the laptop is on AC
power or on battery power

This has been a reoccurring problem for me as well. you can remedy the
situation by adding the power management brightness applet to your panel
and adjusting the brightness that way. If you adjust it with the key
board short cuts the computer will just override the setting. If you use
power management applet the computer won't return to 100% brightness.

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-29 Thread Murat Güneş
If VLC isn't listed, that's a bug; a separate one. File it. There are
other bugs about other apps not being listed, e.g. Epiphany. It's not
good practice to deal with separate issues in the same bug report.

So, how do I define VLC (or any other application for that matter) as my
preferred application to open upon inserting a DVD?

That makes a good topic for the support tracker or forums. This is the
bug tracker.

I'm starting to wonder why gconf-editor clearly has been redered
useless. Are you telling me that Gnome is supposed to restrain the user
to the default selection made by the devs?

No. I'm only informing you that there's a new way of handling what
you're resorting to gconf-editor for now. The whole reason you used
gconf-editor and filed this bug is that you didn't know about the new
tab in the Nautilus preferences. Regardless, if the gconf keys aren't
doing what they're supposed to do, that's a bug.

If someone can enlighten me what it is I oversaw, please let me know,
but replying with facts that are incorrect doesn't solve the problem I
 inducated.

Nobody has replied to you with facts that are incorrect. You've drawn
your own conclusions from what was said and went on to rant about them.
That's called a straw man argument.

There is a bug to solve here!

Indeed; the bug to solve _here_ is that gconf-editor isn't changing
certain settings. It's not that VLC isn't available among the choices.
It's not that some other app isn't available. It's not that the new way
of choosing default actions upon mounting sucks. It's not some
conspiracy theory about removing functionality to deliberately annoy
users. It's one specific potential bug. If you want it resolved, it's in
your best interest to keep strictly on topic, and not waste the time of
the people who will be doing the work to resolve it.

Please consider the fact that the more you limit the user the smaller
 your audience will be.

Please that you're not talking to the people who are developing the
features, but to the people who are integrating them into the
distribution and triaging bugs that result from the integration. If you
see something fundamentally wrong with the changes that is beyond the
scope of _specific_ bug reports, you're welcome to discuss it on the
appropriate mailing list with the developers of the software. The bug
tracker isn't a good medium for such extended discussion.

It's really not my fault the backends do not provide a log about what's going

can, in the case it can't be reproduced by all the default users. If it could

2008-03-29 Thread eliash87
Hmmm.. I can feel I don't like that question... because I can't answer
it properly. In Ubuntu I have only seen the dismount volume option. I
guess that is the one you are thinking about. I must admit that I do/did
not always use that option (Ubuntu does not tell me to...). As to the
actual case, I do not remember, but I think it would have reached my
thoughts if I did not, as a possible explanation for the problem.

Hmm, tell me what would happen if I moved about 50 MB to the USB drive
and then unplugged it without dismounting.

(I will not get angry if this bug is closed because of an insufficient

[Bug 203877] Re: Hardy: gconf-editor changed settings ignored by system

2008-03-29 Thread Marc Baas
So does this mean that ignored settings in gconf-editor are considered a
bug or not?

Sorry if I came off harsh, but it seems to me that I was not the one
bringing up other tools or options.

To reply to your statement that there are some applications that don't
show up in the (new) nautilus tab: on my system not one application
shows up. But I'll file a seperate bug report on that one.

Don't get me wrong, but it tends to get a bit frustrating that I first
have to fight to convince your team that something is not working is a
bug.

Lets just get the bug fixed. That is my main point. gconf-editor
settings should work and at this part they don't, at least not
completely.

[Bug 208162] Re: files gone from USB flash drive

2008-03-29 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the way things are working is that the change on the fat devices can be
delayed, when you use the menu item the change waiting are writting. If
you unplug your key without using that you might have changed not
correctly stored on the device. The copy to a local partition should
always give you files on the local system though

[Bug 208650] Re: Rhythmbox visualization kills rhythmbox

[Bug 208260] Re: Too many commas in gcalctool

2008-03-29 Thread Chris Sherlock
No probs :-)

Not sure if it's worthwhile saying so here, but I suspect that the problem with
gcalctool is because refresh_display() calls
ui_set_display(). However, ui_set_display calls:

if (v-noparens == 0) {
localize_number(localized, str);
str = localized;
}

Basically, it looks like it's trying to localize the whole expression,
but this function is only build to localize an individual *number*. Thus
is adds in the comma every 3rd character regardless...

Not sure how you'd get around this, but I think that's the problem here.

[Bug 196152] Re: [hardy] totem-gstreamer DVB jerky playback

2008-03-29 Thread fargiolas
Same problem here with a working dvb-t stick (hauppauge nova-t stick). It works
with xine, mplayer, me-tv, mythtv but not with totem and gstreamer.
I don't have totem-xine installed neither i'm interested to try it.
Channels are loaded correctly, video starts but it is slow and jerky and no
audio.
Attached totem output with GST_DEBUG=2

Re: [Bug 208701] Re: gnome theme manager crashed

2008-03-29 Thread Franslight
Hi

I sorted out the problem...
just needed to change to a new theme, and restart... no errors then...
think it was because I was under --failsafe

thanks
Frans

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the
crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
 /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash
in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to
 report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I am running Ubuntu 6.10- the Edgy Eft

I changed my theme, and then the desktop crashed.
tried to get into the desktop, but did not work.
rebooted, and linux went into the terminal (not desktop)

 I re-installed Gnome-session, rebooted,
it started up in the desktop, but no toolbars
pressed ctrl alt backspace and choose failsafe to get in... default
 session did the same.

in the failsafe session, I want to change the theme back to default,
but then it crashed (log attached)

[Bug 208365] Re: There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon (timeout?)

2008-03-29 Thread Kjell Braden
The xsession-errors file does not contain any sign of gnome-settings-
daemon failing. Did you receive the error dialog you posted above this
time? If not, could you please give us the .xsession-errors from a
failed attempt?

Thanks,

2008-03-29 Thread fjgaude
Bravo! The gvfs 0.2.2-1 seems to have fixed all issues I was having with
Nautilus, LAN, and remote sftp. Thanks for fixing it.

Keep up the good work.
