Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 939661] Re: After a short period of use nautilus no longer reponds and becomes a zombie
Thanks for writing. In my case it was a miss behaving program, bst.linux, which is an IDE for writing programs for Propeller. This program was never completely finished and was last updated in March 2010. I suspect that it could not cope with the newer GTK files as it would crash when opening a child window. The source code was never released so someone could take it over. It would then cause Nautilus or Gedit it to crash. I no longer use bst as I wrote a spin.lang file for Gedit and an addon compiler. I did not notice a uname zombie. I have not been able to start a second instance of nautilus. Yes I did a lot of reboots to clean up the mess bst left. We agreed to close the bug report because I found the cause and no one else reported a problem until now. Is it possible that you are using a similar program that causes Nautilus to crash? Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 939661] Re: After a short period of use nautilus no longer reponds and becomes a zombie
Sebastien. An update. I ran nautilus for two days without a problem. I did not use bst.linux the program that fails. I suspect that bst.linux 'leaks' and corrupts other programs does that make sense to you? I understand that bst was written and compile in Delphi. The last and I suspect final update to bst was March 2010. Probably should close this item as resolved. Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 939661] Re: After a short period of use nautilus no longer reponds and becomes a zombie
Sebastien I shut down every night I will leave nautilus open and capture syslog. I looked back at syslog.7 to see if there was anything Yes it is weird. Nautilus graphic stays on the screen but does not respond to clicks. I use ps and kill to clear the screen. ps uafx | grep nautilus mike 1688 0.7 4.7 184572 24264 ?Sl 10:23 0:11 \_ nautilus -n mike 2167 0.0 0.1 5340 740 pts/0S+ 10:49 0:00 \_ grep --color=auto nautilus Gedit works fine so long as I don't launch it from nautilus. It locked up the same way when launched from nautilus. I now use gedit directly so I don't loose anything . I should be able to get nautilus to fail and capture syslog and the ps output in a few hours. Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 939661] Re: After a short period of use nautilus no longer reponds and becomes a zombie
Sebastien, Yes it happens every time I leave it open on that particular version of ubuntu. It does not happen on my 64 bit system. We actually have 3 machines running ubuntu but the third one has not been in use for long enough to know. We would need to set up 32 bit machine open nautilus and wait. Is there a way to turn on debug? I have been a software developer and computer system instructor. On that particular machine I am developing a system in spin for a parallax propeller. I am also starting to develop another piece of the system in python. For a while I was a unix administrator (aix). I would be prepared to do whatever I can if you want to give me guidance. I love challenges! I ran memtest on the machine and it passed but there could still be a hardware glitch somewhere but it seems to affect only nautilus. I thought it might be a problem with 'bst' which is a ide for spin as it is buggy but I added a tool to gedit to run the compiler and created a language file so I can use gedit instead.
