Re: [slim] Artwork resizing - could it be managed better?

2008-10-23 Thread MrSinatra

i think a user, and esp a nas user, should be able to optionally run
scans with settings they choose.

imagine an "artwork only" scan. imagine a "music only" scan.

sure, this may mean your music and art are somewhat out of sync at
times, but the user should have the option.

(other options in a scanner would be what to look for, so you could
turn off looking for embedded artwork, or certain tags you don't need
or care about, and as i've mentioned elsewhere, the ability to turn off
automated logics like VA and GH)

I tried Audioengine's fix. It didn't work.

I picked up another SB receiver. Works fine.

The only downside is without the W1 hooked up, I can't get over-the-air

The SB products seem to work exactly as advertised, though.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have installed 7.2.1 over the 7.2 (without uninstall) to both ReadyNAS
and the computer without problem. After the installation, Squeezecenter
started immediately in my computer and run happily there after, but I
cannot access the Squeezecenter in my ReadyNAS. I guess it may be due
to the low CPU power in the ReadyNAS. After one night, I have no
problem accessing the Squeezecenter in ReadyNAS and I feel there is a
bit speed improvement when I search/browse through the SB3.

Re: [slim] Support for ASX "starttime" and WMA stream seeking

2008-10-23 Thread davepeck

Cool, thanks.

My OPML wrapper gives users full access to the streaming archive -- it
is dynamic and tied to the published KEXP playlist. Pretty cool if
you're a KEXPophile.

One last thing I'd love to do is support KEXP's uncompressed archive.
Their stream is strange: they send back a mms:// URL that actually
streams an uncompressed WAV file. Based on other forum posts it sounds
like SqueezeCenter gets confused and assumes WMV -- and therefore can't
play it. How hard a fix is this, too?

I have a bizarre setup to do this right now, since SqueezeCenter can't

3. Point the squeezebox to my laptop.

[slim] Support for ASX "starttime" and WMA stream seeking

2008-10-23 Thread davepeck

I was excited to discover that SqueezeCenter now supports seeking in WMA
streams.

Can we improve the ASX file support, too? Recent versions of ASX have a
"starttime" tag. For example, the following blob in an ASX file says to
start three hours into a stream:

A number of radio stations -- including KEXP, a favorite -- use this
technique to help users pinpoint songs and shows in their streaming
archives.

I've written an OPML wrapper around KEXP's streaming archive. Support
for "starttime" is the only thing standing in the way of making it
awesome:

Dave

Assuming you have no other significant traffic on your wifi while
testing, and that you have a 54 Mbps router, it means that at least
half of the packets transmitted on your wifi fail. You should try to
improve that figure instead of working around it by lowering bitrates
(which means lower sound quality).

Re: [slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2008-10-23 Thread JJZolx

Just downloaded 0.8 and have it running fine on Windows XP as a service.
Seems less temperamental about command line switches, whereas the
previous version had some issues. Which is nice.

Two questions regarding the --volume option. In the Help, there's
this:

Code:

-v, --volume : Enables/disables volume changes done by
SqueezeCenter during its operation, such as when
changing the volume through the web interface or
when applying replay gain. Defaults to sw.
on: volume changes performed on device.
sw: volume changes performed in software.
  off: volume changes ignored.

What's the difference between device and software? The 'device'
(Squeezeslave) is a software one.

Also, I posted a while back that with a Squeezeslave player, I don't
see any Replay Gain options in the Audio settings. Are they supposed
to be present?

[slim] Skin for Android/Tmobile G1

2008-10-23 Thread dmahmoudi

So this is first time on the forums since everything has worked like a
charm on my slim devices (and recently my squeezebox duet).

But I did it - I got a T-Mobile G1 with Android on it - preordered it
and it was delivered on Monday. First thing I did was scan in a book
and see it find the lowest price on the internet. Second thing I did,
was of course, put on some music by connecting to by SqueezeCenter
through the wifi.

Radical.

Some questions though. Neither the Touch or the N770 theme show up
correctly - they try to do some fancy things with the header/footer
which don't show up correctly. I've been using the Classic theme, but,
it's just too much of a pain.

Where can I find other "handheld/mobile" based skins? Has anyone else
run into issues with the default skins?

[slim] 7.2.1 problem: web interface hangs

2008-10-23 Thread Brian Ritchie

(I've reported this to Logislim by email, but it can't hurt to see if it
rings any bells here as well...)

Using the default web interface (under Firefox 3.0.3), it sits
permanently at "Loading...", displaying most bits except for the
playlist. None (*) of the items under Music Library work (nothing
happens). The player controls (on the web interface) still work, and I
can switch between players. The currently-playing track is displayed
and updates OK. I tried clearing FFox's cache and reloading, but it
makes no difference.

(*) minor update: I've since discovered that some menu items *do* work,
including Music Folder. Custom Browse works, but then none of its items
work. Artists, Albums, Genres, Years, New Music and Playlists
definitely don't work.

I tried Fishbone, briefly; it was even worse - no player display at
all, and most menus missing.

The Controller interface seems perfectly fine.

I had this problem with the first 7.2 release too, but didn't quite get
round to reporting it (except in these forums!) before 7.2.1 came out,
sorry; I simply went back to SC 7.1 (which worked fine).

(Actually, it wasn't simple: I went as far as wiping the SC cache and
rebuilding from scratch - which took ages and did no good. I'm
unwilling to try that again!)

Has anyone else had this problem, but got past it?

A symlink is just a filesystem shortcut to another location. Note that
it is NOT the same thing as a GUI-style shortcut you'd create on your
desktop. I only know for sure about how to do this in Linux, but I'm
pretty sure the syntax is the same on a Mac.

In Linux, you type "ln -s ". For example, if your
SC music folder is at /home/username/music and you want to add a drive
at /dev/sdb, you type "ln -s /dev/sdb /home/username/music/sdb"

I believe Vista recently added symlink-ish capabilities to Windows, but
I'm not sure how to use them.

[slim] Annouce: New Squeezeslave 0.8 release availabe on sourceforge

2008-10-23 Thread ralphy

A new Squeezeslave 0.8 release is now available at

https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=105169&package_id=176494

What's new in Squeezeslave 0.8

Works with squeezecenter versions 6.5.4 through 7.2.1.

Binaries available for Windows, Linux and Solaris both Sparc and
Intel.

Win32 version uses Direct X.
Linux versions continue to use the OSS audio driver.
Solaris versions use native solaris mixer interface.

A Pentium MMX binary is also available for linux. Works great on an
old Pentium MMX laptop at 133Mhz with 48MB of memory.

Modified volume_control define from bool to use the enumerated type
slimaudio_volume_t. Fixes issue with VOLUME_DRIVER always being
disabled regardless of command line option.

Upgraded portaudio library to 0.18.1.

Added define GETOPT_SUPPORTS_OPTIONAL to workaround bug in older
getopts.

Fixed endian problem with ogg/vorbis decoding for Solaris SPARC and
MacOSX.

Fixed various typos in comments and error messages.

Added error codes to the mp3 decoder error messages to help track down
what triggers the error.

Changed the default mac address to 0:0:0:0:0:1 to allow Squeezecenter
to create a new player using the squeezeslave player type and not the
old player type.

Added less than 1 check to retry interval and reset to new default of
5.

Applied flaac.patch to slimaudio_decoder_flac.c to allow 64-bit linux
compiles.

Applied sc7.patch to slimaudio_decoder.c to fix skipping issue with SC
7.x.

Added Solaris UltraSPARC and Intel build files to source tree.

Added incomplete Windows CYGWIN files, slimaudio_output thread spins.
Would appreciate some help getting this working with someone who knows
cygwin programming.

I would also appreciate it if someone could contribute a PPC and/or
Intel MacOSX and Linux AMD64 binaries for the new version.

To build the mingw32 version which is the win32 release you'll need to
download the directx sdk from microsoft and populate the lib/dx
directory like so;

lib/dx

I've never messed with the OPML stuff. Someone probably has the path
and import solutions for you. What happens if you create a folder then
manually add a station (not opml)? Does it keep it then?

Yes, no computer needed for SN. However SN's functions are quite
limited in regards to Favorites (i.e. no way to create Folders
etc...). But the SN guru AndyG is working on this for future updates
to SN.:)

I'm guessing it's not anything so exciting. I imagine the only big
roadblock is they'd have to rewrite the "Browse Music Folder" UI to
accomodate multiple paths. It currently seems designed for navigating
a single directory tree.

Yes, that is how SlimServer currently accesses my music, spread over
four drives.

The question I was asking is what is the *reason* that SlimCenter
doesn't work in the same way as every comparable program I know and
allow you to select multiple paths. I am curious. I imagine it might
something to do with the cross-platform nature of the server, but would
like this confirmed (or not) and to know more.

My problem was Squeezecenter wants to default to a folder path I had in
XP prior to recently upgrading to Vista.

I created a new folder with the correct path to the myradio.opml file,
and then enterted a station. All is well, however if I navigate away
from that page and return, again Squeezecenter gives me the "error
trying to load..." the file from the old pathname and I cannot see my
new folder or station entries, although they are still accesible from
favorites on the player. Any thoughts on how to change the default
path?

Seperate question. The favorites of SquezeCenter and SqueezeNetwork
are two seperate with I assume the advantage of having favs in
SqueezeNetwork is in not having to have the computer on, correct?

Is there an easy way to transfer all the SqueezeNetwork entries to the
Squeezecenter favs file? I see an "import" button there which gives me
hope of not having to manually enter all the data again.

Thanks,

RG

The stream is AAC+. Have you configured SqueezeCenter to play AAC+
streams. See following Wiki.

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/AACplus

It is because they are using AAC+ that the sound quality is so good
with just 64k.

I intstalled it over 7.2 and it worked fine. I had to stop and restart

You can also create folders using New Folders then same as above.

Sorry again, but I somehow lost my nerves when I wrote my earlier
post.
But after 2 hours of installing, re-installing and configuring my
SqueezeCenter / Transporter / Controller system without success it
still was not working properly.

I had some minor issues with SC 7.2 which I supposed to be solved in
7.2.1:

1. Controller firmware update SOMETIMES did not work (only when
connected to SqueezeNetwork)
2. Controller hangs in some situations

After installing the situation changed:

3. Connection to SqueezeNetwork with Controller NEVER works (register
Controller to SqueezeNetwork with PIN is impossible)
4. Controller hangs more often than with SC 7.2
5. Transporter never switches off audio outputs when switched off
although it's correctly configured in the settings
5. Transporter hangs when I try to play any music, locally stored MP3s
AND internet radio

Just to name a few.

After downgrade to SC 7.2 AND Transporter factory reset plus xilinx
reprogramming almost everything is as it was before I tried SC 7.2.1.
But issue 3. is still there and additionally Controller firmware update
NEVER works.

What is reason that SqueezeCenter only allows the user to select one

Re: [slim] Announcement Squeezecenter 7.2.1

2008-10-23 Thread matt123

Hi there

I have a few issues with v7.2.1 i must admit i had the same errors with
v7.2 but hoped they may have been resolved

setup =

SqueezeCenter Version: 7.2.1 - 23630 @ Mon Oct 20 19:54:08 PDT 2008 -
Debian - EN - utf8 (ubuntu 8.04)
Perl Version: 5.8.8 i486-linux-gnu-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.51a-3ubuntu5.1
Platform Architecture: i686-linux
Name: Squeezebox
Model: Squeezebox v3
Firmware: 113

Issue 1.

When accessing music library menus do not allow access to music for
example goto music library press right to artist press right artist
displayed again press right artist dispayed again, i can never get past
the artist menu, these happens for all menus accessed from music
library

Issue 2.

>From Squeezeenter GUI, player is never found

Issue 3.

Click on music library nothing is ever displayed

So i guess all three issues are related

Any help would be very much appreciated

thanks

Matt

Re: [slim] Hard drive storage suggestions

2008-10-23 Thread GlenL

Squeezecenter only recognizes one path to the music files so you cannot
add a 2nd,3rd ... etc path.

What you can do though is add a shortcut in your existing music folder
that points to the music folder on any new disk you add.

e.g If your existing music is held in C:\Music and your new disk (D:)
also contains a music folder (D:\Music) then you need to create a
shortcut in C:\Music that points to D:\Music.

When Squeezecenter performs a scan for new music, it will then follow
the shortcut and scan any music in D:\Music.

If you are using a Linux based OS running Squuezecenter I imagine some
sort of symbolic link would achieve the same thing.

My wife reported that she had the same behavior listening to our SBR
this morning. Last night after the upgrade, I listened to my SB3 with
no trouble.

I'll be playing the SBR more when I get home to see if this is
repeatable.

I may put 7.2.1 in my secondary server since it seems to have some

HANG IN THERE! How we can we help you solve your issues unless you tell
us what they are and what your set up is? That way you're contributing
to improvement and learning along the way. I would advise you of
opening a new thread, telling us about your system, version information
(from the WebUI), and the problems you're having. Many people who know
how to help, which pretty much excludes me ;), will get into a dialogue
with you and make the system better for EVERYONE (which includes you! :)
My guess is that there's something specfic to your set up that is giving
you problems.

Good Luck and I'll help too if I can!

AH! No go for ReadyNAS and artwork "on demand" resampling then. But
what does it do for 13 hours then? It must be resampling and caching
the resampled images somewhere. What size are they and where are they
being cached to?

I turned on debug for artwork and noticed that SlimPronto requests
64x64 images to display a coverart collage. Squeezecenter then resizes
from the original folder.fpg of 500x500 to 64x64. Now if these 64x64
images were already cached then there would be no need for this on
demand resize. Images would just be retrieved from cache. So we could
have resampling enabled and the only downside would be the long scan
time.

I also noticed that the web interface requests 100x100 and those also
get resized and resampled on demand.

[slim] problems with remote streaming with 7.2.1

2008-10-23 Thread maggior

I upgraded to 7.2.1 last night and all appeared fine. Today I came into
work and attempted to put on some music. It played for a few minutes,
but then stopped abrubtly. So I started it again...and then it stopped
after a few minutes.

I have 2 servers running, so I turned one of the off to ensure it
wasn't some sort of networking conflict. No difference.

I reverted to 7.2 on one of my servers and it's been playing for about
1/2 hour with no issues.

So, I think this issue is specific to 7.2.1.

Does anybody else use this functionality? Has anybody else encountered
this problem?

[slim] 7.2.1 - 'Can't connect to SqueezeCenter' keeps repeating

2008-10-23 Thread Richie

If a turn on a Squeezebox and the server isn't running I get the
following message:

Can't connect to SqueezeCenter.
Left to go back, right to try again.

This message keeps repeating at approximately 10 second intervals until
I turn the server on. Since I have at least one Squeezebox plugged into
a power strip with my TV and hi-fi, the Squeezebox gets turned on along
with the other equipment. I don't always have SqueezeCenter running if
I'm not going to listen to music. This message soon gets very
irritating so I have to kill the power to the Squeezebox.

I'm sure that previous versions of Slimserver / SqueezeCenter used to
make the the Squeezebox screen go blank after the message had been
shown once.

Should I raise a bug or is this now the intended behaviour?

I found that the G+MIMO router I upgraded to (from vanilla 802.11G) made
a big difference. Even though I was getting 75% wireless strength, my

Changing to the MIMO router which had Auto channel switching made a
huge difference.

Of course, I'm sure the neighbours weren't as impressed that my signal
strength was blowing their network away. But I got there first :-)

In general, most people experience better performance (stronger signal
at longer distance) using the new N routers in "G" mode. I believe
this has to do with advancements in technologies involved in wifi
antenna design etc. A stronger signal at longer distance can equate to
more bandwidth, but you will never exceed the G standards of 54mbps. It
may prove useful if you currently have trouble spots in your wifi
environment, and the cost of a N router is probably not much more than
a after market high performance G antenna.

based on the experience of previous posters
- the mux should be raw.
- access should be http - you had "htt p" which could be a typo
causing a problem

If you have some coding skills you may eb able to update this plugin

I agree - I spend too much time in front of PCs. But I don't work at
home, and I obviously can't lug a real stereo with me from client to
client. The iPod has to suffice during business hours. But weekends and
evenings are when I want the music all over the house - just not enough
time to justify really beefing up what's in the office.

iPhone;352329 Wrote:

To be more specific about my setup, I have SC running on an ancient
Windows Server 2003 SP1 box with a P4 940, 4GB RAM, and all the FLACs
are on a 4x200GB SATA RAID5 set. The server does lots of stuff -
Exchange, domain controller (no private messages about why you
shouldn't co-locate DCs and Exchange, please) web server, SQL server,
etc, etc. It's not just for SC.

My desktop is a Windows Vista SP1 x64 box, Core 2 Duo E6750, and ASUS
P5K-E motherboard (including onboard sound, ADI AD1988B chipset) 4GB
RAM. So, OK, I have a goodly amount of memory, but I have not invested
in any kind of super fast sound card. Both machines are on the same
gigabit switch? That might make a difference?

The point I am driving at is that the sound card, in my experience, is
probably not affecting things. Unless my specific crappy onboard sound
card is the magic bullet for SoftSqueeze synchronization (probability:
low) then there's definitely other variables at play.

Track #6 is the track of the beast. ;-)

My SB3 is the most expensive part of my stereo. So I'm not going to brag
about it.
And my SBB as well...Is it wrong that my alarm clock is worth more than
most of my stereo components? I need to work on that.

Re: [slim] Any Video on the horizon?

2008-10-23 Thread funkstar

My problem with a video device is i woul also want it to do TV as well.
And from there it gets really complicated.

I did actually come up with a potential model SD/Logitec could use when
i was noodling about last night. It would mean that TV streaming was
possible but also wouldn't be a requirement for the basic unit. It
would also retail the slim client philosophy.

It's probably going a little out with the scope of this thread to start
detailing it, but I will if someone *really* wants me to :)

(btw, it could quite easily just be a load on nonsense in my head, but
it makes sense to me :) )

That's a popular opinion, but it's fast becoming old fashioned.
Especially with mobile devices it's a giant advantage to have only one
device in your pocket instead of two. I used to carry a PDA (HP100LX)
and a phone around and they were a major hassle to carry arround in your
pocket. Now, I have a smartphone that does the job of two. Much better.
It also has a GPS receiver which I would use if the software wasn't so
terrible. If the software were good enough I'd use it. The fact that
many smartphones are so bad at being MP3 players is due to terrible
software. The competition of the iPhone will soon force phone makers to
improve their mp3 playing ability. It's just not that hard to do.

I wouldn't mind a video squeezebox, but I suspect it's pretty hard to do
right and integrate it properly with the current software.

Regards,
Peter

Re: [slim] Artwork resizing - could it be managed better?

2008-10-23 Thread cwinson

I'm not sure that's the case - most of the NAS boxes out there are
stripped down Linux boxes which should be perfectly capable of running
a media server. Of course it depends on what the media server is trying
to do.

The issue for me around this whole episode was that ReadyNAS was
purported to be capable of running the software. It wasn't immediately
apparent that this came with big caveats. The option to run with
resized artwork was not workable for me - the artwork looked awful.

I should note that I also ran for a period of time with the software
running on a full PC. I still found the performance and responsiveness
of the controller disappointing - I guess I have high expectations...

Of course, that was when it was able to get a wireless signal..

Going to Settings->Advanced->Software Update gave a message that there

Reinstalled SC7.2 and all is good again.
