Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC
>I hope Slim Devices choses to support non-DRM ACC files. >Yes, they do, through transcoding. I'm wondering why this is such a problem? Good question. AAC is supported through transcoding. In a typical SlimServer + SB scenario transcoding works well and there is no problem. AAC support in firmware is needed when you want to avoid transcoding. For example when SlimServer is setup on a NAS or the music is stored online ( Oboe Locker ). Someone could argue that these are very specific scenarios and that number of users interested in the requested enhancement is tiny. However, since both WMA and OGG support was added to the firmware in the past, there is still hope that this will be addressed in the future... -- shvejk shvejk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1337 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34130 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Assuming that the PC is dedicated to Slimserver and that your music collection is < 100GB, the PIII HP ePC plus Michael's SlimCD is a much cheaper option and it runs great. With some bidding luck on eBay, you can have a running Slimserver PC for about $100. It does not look as sexy as MAC mini, but you can easily hide it somewhere in a closet. See iPod Hi-Fi review at http://playlistmag.com/reviews/2006/03/ipodhifireview/index.php From the review, Zvox mini compared to iPod Hi-Fi: ZVOX mini ($200; $300 with battery and carrying case): The Mini, which is currently in our review queue, is in many ways the closest system to the iPod Hi-Fi: Although it doesn't include an iPod dock or remote control, it's a one-piece, box-shaped speaker system, designed to replace a traditional bookshelf stereo, with much more presence than you would expect. Although the Hi-Fi gives you better bass, the ZVOX system provides more treble detail (perhaps too much for some people), as well as slightly better imaging and a much wider overall soundstage—more than any other one-piece system mentioned here. It's also much smaller. Who will prefer it? People who want a bigger soundstage and more detail, or those who like the Hi-Fi but need better portability. Get yourself HP e-Vectra Pentium III PC on eBay for less than $100 Put in a large 3.5" hard drive to fit your whole music collection. Burn SlimCD and boot the PC from it. In 15 minutes you will get a fully functional SlimServer including many plugins. SlimCD works good with as little as 128MB of RAM. Pentium III e-Vectra is small, very quiet and energy efficient. Should also be more reliable then a laptop, which is not designed for 24/7 usage. Make sure you get a quiet hard drive. Like older Seagate Barracuda 5400 rpm models. The CPU fan is almost silent. The power supply is external and fanless. The hard drive is the biggest noise contributor. Good luck. It is going to be easier to learn Linux when you have SlimCD up and running. it was discussed here in the past no, SB2/SB3 is not an access point it could be done, but since routers/access points are really cheap, it is not on any todo list I had a Motorola wireless router connected to SB2 as access point at home, in the past, it worked fine CompUSA recently had wireless routers for $1.99 after rebate On 11/30/05, jlynch3 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >From what I understand, the bridging feature only connects wired clientsto the wireless network that the SB3 uses to connect to SlimServer. It is nice to see SB3 mentioned. However, the post is full of incorrect info: - Squeezebox scans your music libraries - higher quality audio on this model than previous models - 802.11g support (finally!) - a better display I wish they would know what they were talking about and give real reasons the box is the best on the market. http://us.gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/squeezebox-3-drops-133026.php -- shvejk ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Aqua? Cool. Can you see the infrared diode and the display internals when looking at SB3 from close distance? I hope not. The fact that you can see them when looking at SB2 does not bother me too much. However, with SB3 case is much more "classy". The see through glass would not been good. SB3 looks great. Congratulations! Now, please commission Fred Bould to design nice powered speakers to go with the main unit. This is going to look great as a standalone small-factor stereo system. Re: [slim] Bottom line re: Yahoo Unlimited Music?
I have been waiting for what seems like forever to buy one of theseboxes, mostly because I want it to work with a Yahoo Unlimited Music subscription. SB2 is a unique piece of hardware. Features like WMA and DRM support can be added with firmware upgrade. SlimDevices has a unique policy of adding new features to the firmware free of charge. The above might not be obvious to someone who only reads Slim marketing materials, but for me it was a deciding factor to spend my money on SB2 just after it came out. Re: [slim] Re: How to use FLAC?
agreed, but SlimCD on that machine may still be challenging (the old IBMlaptops needed some black magic boot strings passed because of their non-standard CD interfaces). SlimCD boots fine on Thinkpad T22. I do not know about any older models. Alternatively, you could pull out the hard drive from the laptop and hook it up to a desktop machine. Boot the desktop from SlimCd and run install to HD. It requires a bit of work, but then the laptop CD drive is not needed anymore. Re: [slim] Great Radio Tool for Squeezenetwork & question
>What format is .asx? It appears my SB2 does not>support them asx is Windows Media metafile which defines Windows Media playlist. The concept is similar to WinAmp mp3 playlist (pls). Windows Media is not supported by SB2, you need a SlimServer to transcode the stream. However, jugging by the recent posts in the developers forum, SlimDevices will rollout new SB2 firmware with WMA support. So, as of today, you cannot add WMA stream to your SqueezeNetwork favourites, but you should be able to do that, when the new version of the software is released. That's the beauty of owning SB2. The Ubicom chip inside SB2 is capable of doing just that. I am not a big fun of MS solutions myself. However, there are many good stations on the net that stream in WMA. That's a fact.
