Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?
I first came up with the Nonreality name back in 95 or 96 when I was part of a 3d world called Alphworld. It was a place that you had avatars and could build homes and chat with people from all over the world. I had started with a different name but thought that Nonreality was a perfect name for a person in a made up world on the internet. Now Alphaworld has become Activeworlds last I knew. It was a lot of fun for about 4 years but then the money making machine came along and it became less fun. As far as my avatar here, it was just a picture that I came upon in the nonreality of the internet and liked it. I'm not quite as old as it, but it seems to fit me well. If you see other Nonreality's out there it is usually me. I'm always amazed that 90% of the time it is still available for me. It's hard to find a screen name that you can still get after 13 years. Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?
-Dogberry- is a character from -Much Ado About Nothing-. The other name/handle I've used on purely social boards for twenty-five years (since the days of local BBSes) carries a persona that I felt didn't really fit for more serious and technical forums, so I latched onto Dogberry for places like this. When I got here, I was startled to see that the name was unavailable, because that had never happened before. But when I looked, I found that the other Dogberry was someone who had only one post, years ago, and apparently wasn't coming back. So I decided that meant the name was up for grabs again, and slapped a "2" on the end so I could register. Re: [slim] What is the origin or meaning of your user name?
Why "Moonbase"? History: - -Not- from "Moonbase Alpha One". (I only came to know about that years later.) - Actually from a 1969 U.K. TV series called "UFO". My parents scolded me, I loved it. The "Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation" (SHADO) was located beneath a movie studio in England, and they had a -Moonbase- – all the girls had pink hair and silver outfits. - Later on my nick for citizens band radio – »Stardust« was already taken, so I remembered UFO’s »Moonbase« and it’s been my nick ever since … Since that time (for almost fourty years now!) I’ve been constantly using this nickname all over the place. Later refinements and new explanations arose, like: - Watched Neil Armstrong setting foot onto the Moon live – the day after my tenth birthday. I then believed that manned spaceflight would become reality much faster. (Not realizing it was mainly politics that time.) So I was somehow expecting a -real- Moonbase. - Always believed that standing back two steps (or 238,714 miles, in this case) sometimes just gives a better perspective... (From up there, I could never understand the concept of little ants crawling on this little globe’s surface, them taking a pencil, drawing lines on the surface they call »borders« and fighting for these with their lives. I still don’t get it. No wonder the Aliens stay away from a backwardly planet like ours…) - Some think I’m much too idealistic and have too romantic ideas, like everyone could live in peace with each other, money that goes into military should go into food, a healthy planet, and manned spaceflight, and there could always be »win-win situations« between suppliers and customers. Well, I tried to do my share in business life, but I fear it was way too little. So they said I’m like "the man in the moon", meaning something like a dreamer here. The avatar is actually me, sitting on a bollard in some small harbour in Northern Germany. For fun, I sometimes claim it was photographed while I was doing a radio show, but actually I’m just watching a seagull. Tamanaco (Cacique Venezolano) - Venezuelan Indian Chief that along with his fighting men resisted the Spanish conquest. Soon after his warriors defeated the Spaniards in a battle, he was captured and sentenced to death. Rather than being hung, he choose to fight to death a Spanish fighting dog bare-handed. This last act of courage inspired his people to continue to resist the conquest. After his death Venezuelan native warriors yelled his named before going into battle. Not much is known or written about the heroes that resisted the Spanish conquest. By now, if ID theft becomes a problem, it would probably be easier to change my name by deed poll :-) My avatar: I should start by pointing out that I'm not a Prince fan at all. I think I have a copy of Purple Rain somewhere in the archive, but that's it. I don't even have 3121, and have never heard it. But since my teens (way back long back) I've been using "1312" as my logo - the 13 looks a bit like a B, the 12 a bit like an R; so when I saw the Prince album image at about the same time as I was wondering what to use for an avatar, it just seemed obvious. -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55256 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

12 years ago, I took home a cat from the pound: an evil evil black cat. The pound actually tried to tell me not to take her because she was mean. She spent the first week growling at me whenever I looked at her. So she was named Snarlycat. (And it turns out she was actually a very sweet cat, she just wanted life her way... She had the most impressive arched-back black cat hiss, too, and was brilliant: it took her less than 10 seconds to figure out laser pointers, and she would never chase them, just look at me with a "why do you keep pointing that thing on the floor next to me?" look.) And since I usually played Dwarves in MUDs at the time, I named my online persona after her. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55256 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

aubuti = older brother in the Setswana and Sesotho languages, spoken mostly in Botswana, Lesotho, and South Africa. I've lived in southern Africa off and on for the past 20+ years, first in Botswana (1982-85) where my friends commonly addressed me as aubuti (ah-oo-BOO-tee) and I addressed them in kind (ausi for women).
