Not entirely true. There is software around that will make a pretty good
job of tracing edges and turning some bit maps into usable vectors.

trivia: do you know even OOo Draw can do that?
insert a raster drawing in Draw and use Modify-Convert-To Polygon.
(other programs able to do this are autotrace and potrace)

BUT, depending on the complexity of the drawing the result may or may
not be usable or even accurate.

the same is true for PDF: a simple PDF file, containing only plain text,
can be easily imported (for example using pdftotext, part of the xpdf
package) but when formatting is more complex it may be impossible to
obtain something usable.

In adding to this doc (350 or so pages, lots of tables, scatter plots
(ole objects), footnotes, etc. - over 9Mb for the .odt file to begin
with), including the equations I am afraid that I'm fighting a losing
battle, and it would seem simpler to break this down into chapters to
form a book (as in the old applix book-building process). That way I
could still do my TOC, index, lists of tables, equations, and figures,
 etc. fairly easily.

Is there any equivalent in OOo? Any pointers, docs, etc. would be
 greatly appreciated.

What works a bit like that is the master document feature. I have never
tried breaking down anything as husge as what you have into that; but I
know that using it is covered in some detail i some of the OOo books,
presumably since the authors had to master the feature themselves to get
the books out.

If the document is already broken into chapters, then save each,
individually as a file, and read up on master documents before reassembling
them. I know that you have to do a certain amount of preparation and make
the right choices when setting up the MD. But it sounds as if that would be
time well spent.

You can use the functions YEARS(), MONTHS() and DAYS() instead.

[discuss] Converting Presentation to Flash?

2005-08-01 Thread David Miller
Was recently presented with a problem for which I hope someone on this
list can offer a solution. I was given a simple PowerPoint presentation
that a minister friend of mine uses in a Bible Study that he presents.
The idea was to expand the presentation to outline the various talking
points he uses on each scripture (he normally just puts up the scripture
and talks about it), attach audio to each slide, then export the entire
presentation to Flash or some other multimedia format suitable for use
on a web site. He has a series of lessons that we hope to upload if I
can solve this problem. I got 1.9.118 since I was hearing how much
better it than 1.1.4 (have been a user since 1.0.1). Got a
proof-of-concept presentation put together, complete with audio, but
when I did the export to Flash (as many of you probably already know)
the audio and transitions didn't survive.

Here's the question. Do any of you know of a decent converter from
Impress or PowerPoint to Flash, AVI, or some other web-friendly
multimedia format that is available: (1)Win98-compatible, (2)open-source
or freeware? Is 2.0 final expected to have Flash improvements over
118? I can wait a little if that is the case.

Any advice or constructive suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks-
David Miller

[discuss] Page numbering

2005-08-01 Thread J. Robert Lennon

Hi there--

Just wanted to drop a suggestion regarding the upcoming version of
OpenOffice... I LOVE this program, especially writer, and regard it as
superior to MS Word...except in one instance: page numbering. I want to
be able to insert page numbers in a document OUTSIDE the margin
formatting, and I want to be able to start at any number, not just 1.
Unfortunately the offset command doesn't seem to work, the footer steals
page space from the main body, and all of this takes half a dozen
commands to execute. I have to load things into Word just to print,
because I often print separate chapters of a large document-in-progress
(in my case, a novel). Please provide an easy page number insertion
command in the next version!

RE: [discuss] Page numbering

2005-08-01 Thread Justin Fitzgibbon
Have you considered writing a macro ? Just use the
macro recorder to record a typical page number insert
then if needed change the critical values to variables
And prompt the user for the value, you can then assign the
Macro to a toolbar.
e.g.
Dim Pageoffset as Integer
Pageoffset = InputBox( Please enter the page offset: )

Microsoft knowledge base does not know anything about this function. I
searched with :

It is in the help system on my daughters MAC for Excel dated 2001.
