[Elecraft] Noisy polling
Chris It is some sort of earth loop - I can't be more specific since it depends on your installation. I have heard the same when I put my headphone switcher in the same box as the controller I use for copying freq/mode between the two K2s here. I found mine by systematically disconnecting the variious control and audio cables and earth lines. 161 Bob G3PJT ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - NOISY POLLING
I got rid of the computer polling noise on both of my K2/100's by removing the right side panel and tucking the ribbon cable up as high as possible - away from the main board. Not that I would recommend doing it the way that I did it (with the power on and CTWin up and running), but I could hear the polling noise go away on each radio as I tucked the ribbon cable up as close to the top cover as I could get it. Again I would not recommend that you do it with power on unless you like living on the dangerous edge of life in the K2 lane!! 73HankK8DD Stewart Baker wrote: I guess that my setup is just plain awkward. I had a lot of computer noise until I connected the shield end at the computer as well as the K2 end. Can't explain why it worked, but it did...not a peep now. I have two K2/100s which both have the 160m, NB and DSP options and one has the SSB option. I am using N1MM Logger with an old desk-top (about 300MHz) computer under Windows 98 and when I listen to the SSB K2 on any band with the AF gain at minimum, I can hear a soft pulse every second or so. This does not increase as the AF Gain is advanced and normally the sound of signals, etc masks it, but it is slightly annoying when tuning on a very quiet band. -- 'Never argue with an idiot. [Elecraft] KX1 completion..
Hello all, Seems like many folks post to this mailing list announcing the arrival/ completion of their new baby. In keeping with this tradition KX1 ser# 1034 was completed last night and will be on the air in the backyard and adventure radioing. Am planning on building a K2 and decided this would be a good warm-up project. I had no problems during construction due to the wonderful manual quality and going nice and slow... Initial subjective listening test blows the Yaesu 817 away! Looking forward to some Elecraft to Elecraft contacts... RE: [Elecraft] K2 - NOISY POLLING
What could be more elegant than a neatly folded cable? G This discussion does re-inforce my opinion that anytime the KPA100 is installed, the right side panel be removed so the cables can be dressed properly and not interfere with the shield plate or the clips. It is also easier to remove/replace the KPA100 option if the left side panel is loosened to remove some of the pressure on the shield clip - failure to do that can bend the clips. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I've had the same polling noise and the S meter would flicker with each poll when using any logging program, not loud but still there. There is no iambic element. --- Interesting! I caught Tom's query and was very interested in the answer myself. I can't see the advantage to normal non-iambic keying though... When I send a C using an iambic keyer, I just squeeze, being sure to hit the dah side first. Two finger movements for one complete 'C' (plus letting go!) But it'd take four if the dashes repeated, the same as if I was using it in non-iambic mode. A Q on the iambic keyer takes two finger movements too. Hit the dah and during the second dash, tap the dit and I get a Q with the dit inserted after the second dah with logic-perfect precision. It sounds like the Ultimatic would require as many finger movements as a standard keyer. Am I missing something? (Probably. After 20 years on an Iambic keyer I went back to a Bug because it's more work and more satisfying. So don't ever expect me to be logical, Mr. Spock!) Re: [Elecraft] Ultimatic Keying.
There was a discussion about this just recently in the BrassPounders news group on Yahoo. The attractiveness of Ultimatic is not its effeciency - it is attractive to a number of cw operators because of its ineffeciency! That is, its forgiving coordination requirements. I bought a very nice iambic paddle - but just couldn't control it - all those unintentioned dits or dahs. So I got a single level paddle (vibrokeyer, Kent SP-1, etc.) and that worked okay. But moving an object left/right has a little more fatigue factor than just a squeeze. Someone brought up Ultimatic mode and mentioned the Jackson Harbor Keyer II - which provides Ultimatic. A cheer was raised in the news group. Now those of us who are timing challenged can use the same high quality, and plentiful, selection of iambic paddles. So we only squeeze the paddles, no side-to-side as with a single level paddle. And we get more predicable results. The four sound letters sometimes take more effort than iambic - but look at a P. squeeze and hold the dit, squeeze the dah to insert two dahs, release the dah for another dit. Not so bad. But again - it wasn't an argument about which is better or more efficient. It was just that some of us have struggled with the auto dit/dah of iambic and Ultimatic mode lets us use our iambic paddles but in a more relaxed manner. 73, Paul, K7NHB ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Calibration Standard
Well, I received my 5 volt calibration standard from Joe Geller at gellerlabs.com today. I upgraded to the KQ chip. The papers with it shows that it is calibrated to +/- 10 microvolts. On a 5 volt scale, that is +/- 2ppm. The initial calibration is then +/- 0.0002%! I connected it to my Alinco DM-330MV switching power supply locked at 13.8 volts. I then tested my Sears Craftsman 82002 autoranging multimeter. It displayed 5.04 volts. That is an error of 4 parts in 500, or 8 parts in 1000, or 0.8%. Next, I tested my HP 3466A bench-top DMM. It displayed 5.000 volts both autoranging and with the range manually set. I bought the HP meter used off of EBay for the purpose of aligning my K2. The K2 has always seemed to be dead on (or spot on as our British friends say), and I guess I now know why! The calibration standard from Joe Geller is a beautiful piece of work. Re: [Elecraft] Calibration Standard
A couple of general questions to the reflector regarding voltage meter calibration: 1) if the meter is spot-on on one scale, can one assume it is so on all scales (or all autoranges)? I suspect the answer is no, but am surely willing to hear the word of those who know. 2) if the meter reads, say, 5.05 when it is measuring 5 volts, giving an absolute error of .05 volts and a relative error of 1%, is it the absolute error or relative error that is relevant. That is, when measuring 100 actual volts, will one get 100.05 or 101 volts (modified, of course, by the issues entailed in question 1)? I suspect the answer is relative, but again, I would love to get the word from the experts. thanks, dave belsley, w1euy On Feb 18, 2005, at 10:41 PM, Dan Allen wrote: Well, I received my 5 volt calibration standard from Joe Geller at gellerlabs.com today.
