[Elecraft] 7182 buzz appears after K69XV installed
The PROBLEM Installed the K60XV and the old 7182 (7181 ->7184 ) Buzz appears. Just like a bad penny. Jack W4EFZ related to me that this was an old problem. The buzz is caused by the LO and Reference frequency being co-incident in the 12 Mhz range when the radio was tuned around 7182 and coupling back into the PLL. My K2 did not exhibit this problem until K60XV mods were made, Proper PLL voltages across all bands were also difficult to obtain. Investigation of the original fix raised some question about component values chosen for the PLL VCC filter (100uh and .001uf). Looking at the specs on 100uh molded inductors of the physical size used that are available from several manufactuers revealed that the self resonant frequencies were in the 12 to 14 Mhz range. As I recall an inductor at SRF and above has a low impedance (Atleast that's what I recall). It seems that this is just the opposite of what one would want to keep the LO frequency out of the PLL VCC supply pin How it was cured 1) After much thought, I decided that an inductor with an SRF above the highest LO frequency (about 25 Mhz) would be best... Also I wanted to shorten the lead length as much as possible. An SMT inductor was chosen with a value of 18uh and SRF of 27Mhz. Its foot print is a 1210 size (120mils x 100 mils) and fit perfectly between the VCC pin of the PLL chip and the VCC buss. 2) After a little more thought I decided to increase the bypass capacitance. I just picked a .033uf as it was the first one greater than .01uf and less than 0.1uf in the supply box that I came up with. It is in a 1206 size case and is just long enough to reach from the PLL chip VCC pin to the ground via originally used. 3) I also added a 0.1uf capacitor (0805 size) from the VCC buss to the same ground via. The solder resist will need to be removed from the VCC buss trace in order to install. The 0805 fit perfectly. 4) Reading the fix for the 7182 buzz, there were instructions to trim PLL chip leads an keep lead lengths short. The added 68 pf capacitor used had short leads,, but it looked like a big old lollipop antenna sitting there. It was replaced with a SMT 0805 68pf NPO capacitor. The 0805 fit nicely between the PLL chips' leads. 5) Looking at the two varicaps and 10k resistor added for 60 meter coverage, which were supplied with the K60XV, and again remembering something about shorts leads,,, They were replaced with SMT components. Two MMVL109 varicaps in SOD23 package and a 10K 1206 packaged resistor were used. The lead lengths were reduced considerably as a result, plus the components are now right down on the PWB surface. The payoff. 1) NO MORE 7182 BUZZ (PERIOD) 2) The PLL voltages on all bands came up considerably. After setting up the PLL (L30) on 160 and 80 meters, all other bands fell into place and WELL with the specified ranges with plenty of margin. No difficulties at all. Do not try this at home Unless you have a GOOD microscope (No, NOT the one your kid got with their biology set for Christamas last year), or EXTREMELY GOOD maginifier, or the eye of the 6 million dollar man, AND good soldering SKILLs, AND the proper soldering tools, I would not reccommend trying to make this change as oulined here. The parts are VERY SMALL. I used a 2 to 10x inspection microscope and soldering rework station at my work. Unless you ARE having the PLL problems outlined, I would not reccommend making this change. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you need this fix Get the proper tools, and have the proper skills, or find the proper experienced help. Changing the leaded conponent values to meet the criteria outlined above would probably suffice in the PLL VCC filter. Keep ALL leads on ALL changes made with the leaded components as SHORT as possible. Use a smaller 68pf leaded capacitor on the PLL. [Elecraft] Elecraft Net Report for May 15-16th, 2005
Good Evening, Once again the Elecraft net was not skunked. Conditions were rather weak but a few folks braved them and were recognized. I am sure there were others out there under the noise but I was not able to hear you. But this is not too bad a showing considering the CME which smacked the ionosphere last night. The pictures on http://www.prairiejournal.com/northern_lights/051505.htm are pretty spectacular. Maybe soon I'll be closer to the Magnetic North Pole and will be able to enjoy these sights in the night sky. Tom heard me on the first net and gathered in a new one for us. Both a new op and a new area. I am not sure but it appears KP4GL was in Puerto Rico! We'll see when all the dust settles; he may have been visiting the lower 48 instead. RE: [Elecraft] K2 current draw
Vic, There are only 2 things that have potential for causing higer drive requirements on 20 meters - the base K2 low pass filter and the base circuit of the KPA100. I have not noticed any problem with 20 meters on all the KPA100s that I have worked on (but I follow the manual recommendation to set CAL CUR to 3.5 Amps, and I look no further), so I suggest that you look carefully at the resistors and capacitors in the base circuit of the KPA100 and count the turns on the toroids for the 20/30 meter portion of the K2 LPF - my bet is that you can 'tweak' the windings in the K2 LPF to improve the situation - one extra turn on a toroid (L18, L19 or L20) can lower the frequency enough to reduce to power output per ampere (actually increse the current draw) from the base K2 on 20 meters, and not be noticable under any other conditions - the load presented by the KPA100 is not precisely 50 ohms on all bands, hence my suggestion to investigate the base circuit. OTOH, the KPA100 manual recommends that the CAL CUR be increased to 3.5 Amps when the KPA1000 is installed, so things are still within expectations, but with fine tuning, you may be able to do better than average. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > I just noticed an interesting thing about my K2/100: the current > drawn by the > low-power part of the K2 (that's the current measured when you > tap DISPLAY) is > extra high on one band: 20 meters. FW: [Elecraft] K2 Filter attenuation?
I checked mine, and also got zero attenuation. Then, I remembered to turn off the AGC. Results were much more believable, but still decent. My filters had much steeper skirts, tho, if memory serves (it usually doesn't). BTW, I'm running 2456's supplied crystals, and haven't looked at the toroids since they were installed. Let me check "sent items", I know I said something last year. ... Found it! Do overs! What I really proved is that the AGC circuit works really well. Nobody spotted the error in my Setup, I.E., AGC OFF not specified. I just reran the test with AGC off. Results are still excellent, but not as perfect as I reported yesterday. Bandwidth Setting Peak 0.00 -41 0.10 -35 0.20 -34 0.30 -31 0.40 -30 0.50 -29 0.60 -29 0.70 -29 0.80 -30 0.90 -31 1.00 -30 1.25 -32 1.50 -32 1.75 -33 2.00 -34 2.25 -32 2.49 -33 OP1 -36 My perception of "No Attenuation" comes from my standard practice of cycling between 0.90, 0.50 and 0.20 (-31, -29 and -34 respectively) plus the AGC working made me think it was flatter than it is. However, 5db isn't too bad if the S9+ interfering signal disappears. Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 It looks fine, although I would move the two wider filters a bit to the right. There looks like about 6-8 db difference in attenuation between the widest and narrowest filters, which is probably on the high side of normal (although this tends to vary). ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Vic The bandpass filter alignment merely assures you have adequate drive to the PA. The LPF will have more effect on the PA current, as it determines whether you have a match between the load the and PA. 73, Bob N6WG -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Vic Rosenthal Sent: Sunday, May 15, 2005 3:39 PM To: Elecraft Reflector Cc: Gary Surrency Subject: [Elecraft] K2 current draw I just noticed an interesting thing about my K2/100: the current drawn by the low-power part of the K2 (that's the current measured when you tap DISPLAY) is extra high on one band: 20 meters. [Elecraft] 12m alignment failure, C44 &/or C46 dirty wipers? Oops
Oops, after I sent this I realized variable caps don't have wipers like a pot does. Oh well, still wondering why it suddenly started to function. From: Paul [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, May 15, 2005 11:46 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject:12m alignment failure, C44 &/or C46 dirty wipers? Everything was going fantastic with the final alignment until 12m then nothing. Only 0.2 indicated no matter how I adjust C44 or C46. Quick search of the archives and a look at the schematics points to soldering, C44, C45, C46, soldering, K6, VCO or soldering as potential causes. Pulled off the bottom plate, got out the magnifying headgear and scrutinized every joint. Beautiful joints, nice smooth fillets on both sides, even got out the alcohol and cleaned 'em up a bit more. Checked TP1 at 24890 and got 19975.75 so the VCO is fine. Set to 24900, hit TUNE, still 0.2, tweak C44 a bit then BAM 4.6, a few more iterations between C46, C44 and she's peaked at 2.1 as requested by the power setting. So hu, could the wiper on C44 have been dirty or something? I know I twisted both the full range when it first failed. Interesting but happy ending. Hope this tid-bit may prove useful to someone else. 73, Paul KI4BIO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] kx1 and single-lever paddles?
This is a simple conversion of the KX1 iambic paddle (KXPD1) to a single lever paddle. i never was able to convert over to iambic keying since i learned to send CW with a regular Vibroplex bug. i have always been able to send faster and with fewer errors on a single lever paddle. When i have to use any iambic paddle i must keep my fingers spaced really far apart. The conversion uses an exoskeleton plastic case over the KXPD1 iambic levers. The exoskeleton case prevents the operation of both levers at the same time. i found an old 9 Volt NiCad battery (Eveready type CH22, really 7.2V, that has the 2 snap clips on the top), i took all the NiCad cells out and the case fits right over the iambic paddles. This case is made of a one piece plastic shell. You must remove the KXPD1 rubber boots and shorten the plastic battery case a little. Fine spacing adjustments can be made by taping thin pieces of postage stamp size cardboard (3x5 card stock) inside the plastic case. Now the last task is to hold the case in place and to get the case to pivot around the levers. i placed a long uninsulated terminal lug under the top left paddle PCB screw and formed it up to the top of the key. This made a little peg for the case to pivot on. Then i epoxied an Exacto knife to the top of the case. The hole in the Exacto blade fits over the peg. The case can now easily be attached for single lever operation or taken off for iambic operation. (You could drill and tap a small hole in the aluminum block and put in a small screw to make the pivot but it isn't as adjustable as the lug). The plastic case doesn't fall off when you are walking around Pedestrian Mobile either... i have a photo of the final paddle conversion in the W0RW photo section of HFPack2. Try this link http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/hfpack2/vwp?.dir=/W0RW+-+Paul&.dnm=KXPD1+Mod.jpg&.src=gr&.view=t&.hires=t The photo makes the conversion very easy to understand. [Elecraft] Handedness Survey
Just a reminder ... 2359Z 05/15/2005 is the deadline for inclusion in this lighthearted romp through CW, ham radio operators, and which hands they use. They're still trickling in. All I need are the following data: Basic Handedness (right, left, either) Writing Handedness Straight Key Handedness (right, left, either, never used) Bug Handedness Iambic Keyer Handedness PTT Switch Handedness (for phone-only ops) Age Years Licensed Comments "Basic handedness" is your own assessment of your dominant side. People often switch off hands for various tasks, but most folks consider themself right or left handed. I will take your word for it, no questions asked, and you don't need to justify it. And for the record, in case I misstated it, "Iambic Keyer" means how you handle any keyer, regardless of whether or not you have mastered true Iambic keying. I'll publish a summary of the results to the NCCC and Elecraft reflectors and post the data and analysis to my web site sometime on Tue, 5/17/05. A number of folks have commented that a set of "voluntary" responses is not a true random sample for statistical purposes. Rest assured, you are quite right, and in fact, this little survey could easily be a poster child for "How Not To Design An Experiment," as there are many, many more biases (some of which I'll cover in the analysis). On the other hand, life is way too short to take it seriously all the time. 73, Fred K6DGW Auburn CA CM98lw PS: Congrats to Chip and Ken on their Tonight Show debut. I suggest you begin writing your acceptance speeches for the Emmys now. Great job!! ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] kx1 and single-lever paddles?
The KX1 would never know that you connected a single-lever paddle vs. a dual-lever paddle. Dual-lever paddles are not necessarily "normal". They are just more common. BTW, you suggested you were having a little trouble with iambic keying. Don't feel bad. I did a little informal survey at the last club meeting among the known cw ops there. Out of an even dozen of us, all used a dual-paddle paddle. Only two used either iambic mode. One of those using iambic was relatively new to ham radio, the other had been a cw op for 30 years. The rest of us had been cw ops for 20-48 (me) years. Frankly, iambic keying seems to take an awful lot of effort to learn just to send 4 letters with less energy. If you're having problems with it, don't worry about it. Concentrate on well-formed Morse with whatever you are comfortable with. The important thing is to get on the air and built experience. [Elecraft] kx1 and single-lever paddles?
Hello. Right now I am happily using a straight key with my KX1 as I can't seem to get the hang of paddles (that and the fact that pounding brass feels good ;-) Since I found a single-lever paddle that may be used as a "cootie-key" of sorts (see here: http://www.mtechnologies.com/cootie.htm), I was wondering if I could catch two birds with the proverbial one stone: -with the KX1 in straight key mode, paddle used as "cootie-key" (jumpering the two posts together) -with the KX1 in paddle mode, paddle used normally, for example to enter data in keyer memory or maybe one day for real 8-) Question is, does the KX1 internal keyer really care about the paddle being a normal dual-lever model or a single non-iambic one? [Elecraft] Photo correction suggestion.
I am now building the K2 (Nr 4875) and KSB2 ssb module. I notice that the pictures shown on the Elecraft web site are not up to date and according to the instructions. For example, they show R11 mounted on the component side and the instructions say to mount it on the other side. The construction pictures taken by PA3CEV are of an older version of the K2. I strongly suggest that Elecraft put up to date pictures on the web site. That surely would help builders of the otherwise fine products! Re: Re: [Elecraft] K2 Almost Ready
Hi Leigh: I have built one of these and use it with my FT-817. However, I wanted something a bit more powerful than the 38 W I get out of that particular linear that I could put into a matching K2 case. Now, before all the flames start licking up around my privates, let me assure you that I have no real intention of using this amp on a regular basis. However, having said that, I have always wanted to undertake a medium power HF linear project (around the 200 W range) based upon transistor designs found in the Motorola RF book. Communications Concepts sells several different board designs based upon the MFR-454/455 devices that will go up past 300W. I just think that it would be nice to have something around the 150/180 W range sitting next to the K2 in a matching enclosure. However, she is the one who "sold" the producers that the skit could work. She also did a VERY credible job of explaining Morse telegraphy and the radio code and its uses. (You all might think to send her a thanks too as without her, this would never have happened [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) When they contacted me later that afternoon, I explained that my wife was correct, I am a competent CW and Morse operator. Your point is interesting in that they did try and get the fastest text messengers they could fly in. I did however explain that if the Tonight Show folks had been able to get the equivalent world record holder in CW to do this, it would have been at almost TRIPLE the speed we were going at. The reason, as I have explained before, that we worked at about 28 or so wpm is that this is the fastest speed that I can make nice readable copy with a pencil as they did not have the ability to let me use a typewriter for copy (and I thought they were going to do a camera shot of my copy for verification). Also, since we did not have the time to set up headphones, I just added some extra volume for me, had the stage folks cut my mike (to prevent feedback and overload) and copied off of the speaker. To re-emphasize the point, I'm just an average CW op who occasionally operates the CW SS QRP, whith my K2 of course, and really enjoys CW, and traffic handling. Re: [Elecraft] More Clarifications on the Tonight Show - from K6CTW
Ken, Cool, really, really cool! Great job. Those guys text messaging mentioned that they set the record by sending about 160 characters in just under a minute. That comes to about 32 wpm, not counting wherever it goes to get relayed around. Here is site that has a file of the segment...forwarded to me by Jeff WB5GWB in our local group. Thanks agn. Water is an environmentally friendly solvent (at least for now :-) It does an excellent job of cleaning the surfaces to be soldered. It cleans well (as long as you do it quickly!), so joints can be inspected. It is (or was) not considered hazardous. It acts like soap - you get suds as you wash/scrub the board. It is not recommended for kit building because of the dangers of corrosion. In automated work, the boards are exposed to the flux, then a wave of molten solder, over a period of some few to tens of seconds. It is then rinsed thoroughly. The organic cored solder was probably intended mostly for touch-up and rework. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] 12m alignment failure, C44 &/or C46 dirty wipers?
[Elecraft] Rosin
Rosin is extracted from pine sap and has a characteristic pine odor...It is "organic", but is not water soluble, as anyone who has gotten pin sap on their hands can testify to...Hot water and soap will not easily remove it from your hands, a solvent is needed...I have never seen solder with water soluble flux referred to as having "water-soluble ROSIN", only a "water soluble flux core"... The purpose of any flux is to chemically clean the joint of oxides and impurities...With some fluxes the chemical reaction will continue if it is not cleaned off, spurred on by atmospheric humidity... It is very risky using acetone to clean up PCB's since acetone dissolves many plastics and can ruin relays, connector headers, jacks, and some capacitors...Acetone is often used as a cement because it softens some plastics allowing "welding" of the parts... If one MUST remove rosin flux, the safest solvent is isopropyl alcohol...It best to clean as you go and not wait until the board is finished and then try to clean the whole thing at once...Using an acid brush, it cleans off easier while the joint is still warm...99% isopropyl is best, but you can use the drug store stuff if you take the time to wipe/dab the joint dry with a soft cotton cloth, which I always do anyway...Letting it air dry will leave a residue... It is definitely a feature! --- There is another SMS alert in there as well: 'Connecting people', at least it has been there in all the Nokia phones that I have had.
