Accidentally keyed rigs are an all-too-common experience, even when they are pumping 100 watts (or more) into an antenna. Then i use 2 diodes and SPDT (center off) switch to drop the voltage down to 14V (which is the maximum rating for the KX1) and this gives full output on transmit. The voltage goes up to 15V on receive but there is apparently no damage. i switch the diodes out of the circuit as the battery voltage and my power output drops. The 'Bat LO' feature on the KX1 can be used to detect the external battery dropping below 13.0 volts by setting the 'Bat LO' to 13.0V. When the external battery drops below 13.0 volts 'Bat LO' will be displayed on the LED and the battery can be switched back up to 14 volts. The 'Bat LO' is displayed every 5 minutes and when the KX1 is switched on. So i am using the battery low feature to keep the battery voltage above 13 volts. It also tells me that my internal NiCads are fully charged at turn on." __ FWIW, I participated in the NAQCC's 40/80m Sprint last night with my KX1 (at 3.5 watts) powered by a 3-cell, 450mAh LiPoly battery for about an hour and 15 minutes. The key-down voltage went from 12.3V at the beginning of the contest to 11.6V key-down after 75 minutes. I was either engaged in a contest exchange or calling CQ practically the whole time. Mike: Just curious, are you using any type of voltage cut off circuit between the battery and KX1? I use lithiums in my R/C planes and I set my speed controls for a cut off voltage of 3.0v per cell. I am not a lithium expert but if the batteries are discharged too low they will not take a charge. RE: [Elecraft] (no subject)
Michael, The diode voltage dropping trick sounds like a very 'safe' method to me. One can even switch out the diodes when the battery voltage falls. I have used this technique many times, but not with the particular batteries you are using - figure the number of series diodes that you need from the maximum charged battery terminal voltage and the diode forward voltage drops. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > I have been using a 3-cell 2100 milliamp Li-Poly with my KX1 > and am pretty > pleased with it, but would consider using a 4 cell if shown it is > safe (or a > way to do it safe...) Thats correct, David. We should ask Eric if it´s possible to provide us with an elecraft label to glue it on the MC43 :-) Lots of people would like it. It´s the same with the famous HexKey: I like it because it´s execellent, actually I changed my Schurr Professionals against it, but I know a couple of people who bought the HexKey because it´s Elecraft label allthough they did their last CW QSO during the lis examination. 72/3 de Peter, DL2FI www.qrpproject.de > -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- > Von: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Im Auftrag von David Pratt > Gesendet: Mittwoch, 12. Keith, Ist late in teh evening in Germany and I dont have the papers here at home, But you find the MC43 in the ssb Option manual. If you use it as it is, the jumpers on the jumperbank are stright forward, you may use the 2pin computer jumpers for the pins directly. The up and down keys of the microfon no can be used to switch VFO A/B. Re: AW: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 Microphones?
I sold my MH2 a while back as it seemed totally out of character with the K2 even with the Elecraft label. It was way too large, had PTT switch that took a lot of pressure to operate, and had too stiff a coiled cord. The K2 also allows for function buttons on the mic to switch VFOs. It would be nice to have a mic from Elecraft that exploited these functions and where the function buttons were correctly labeled. RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 Microphones?
Fred, As Eric indicated, the K2 microphone configuration header can be plugged/wired to work with most any microphone having an 8 pin mic plug. Obtaining a microphone is easy - if you want to go the inexpensive route, pick up a CB microphone, they are plentiful and if it doesn't come with an 8 pin plug, get one of those too - Radio Shack used to have them and the first page of a Google search for '8 pin microphone plug' yielded over 4 sources at various prices. If you must rewire the mic plug, you can choose whichever pinout that you wish and plug the mic configuration header accordingly (I recommend the Elecraft 'straight across' jumpering with or without the resistor on the mic jack). Speaking of the resistor the mic jack, it is needed for those mics containing an electret type mic element - if the mic element is dynamic, you should not install it. One inexpensive method of getting a good working mic is to find a non-functioning mic and install an electret mic element in the mic head - I have obtained mic elements from Marlin P Jones & Associates in the past www.mpja.com I have re-furbished several mics in that manner - I have a collection of dynamics and electret types that I use to test the K2s that I build - I can plug in the one that most closely matches the configuration my client wants installed - they all work just fine and most of them are from salvaged mic heads I have acquired inexpensively in various places. If you do not fancy doing your own microphone from a hamfest 'grabbox' collection, some folks have found the Ten-Tec mike to work fine, you can order a mic from Heil wired for Kenwood (similar to Elecraft wiring), or order a new mic for most any other transceiver on the amateur market - the KSB2 instructions will indicate how to wire the configuration header. 73, Don W3FPR > -Original Message- > > With Elecraft marketing a K2 w/SSB option - why would > they drop all desk & mobile MICROPHONES for this rig? > Doesn't make sense - am I missing something? Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 Microphones?
Hi Fred, The manufacturer of the MH2 microphone discontinued that model and we have been looking for a replacement. We are in discussions with another manufacturer now for a replacement hand mic, but it will be a couple of months before we can get it in. Fortunately we designed the K2 and KSB2 to use just about any of the current microphones from Yaesu/Icom/Kenwood. Our 8 pin microphone connector is the industry standard for most rigs and we provide a jumper block on the K2 front panel PCB to jumper the pin out of this connector to match each microphone. Check out the KSB2 manual on out manual download page for a description of how to set the jumpers. Re: [Elecraft] K2 and MacOS
Hi Robert, I have a MacMini - OSX 10.4.6 with dual Keyspan USB/serial ports and an older RIGblaster. I use MacLoggerDX on one serial port for logging and rig control and Cocoamodem/CocoaPTT on a separate port for PSK. MacLoggerDX is a fine piece of software -- It is versatile and full-featured, and author Don Agro gives it superb support. MLDX supports the native K2 command set -- it's plug and play. SignaLink is said to be a fine solution, but I've not used it. Alas, I fried my KIO2 this weekend doing something else, so I'm out of the rig control business until I fix it. No connection with the above-mentioned vendors x/c as a customer. 73, Ken K3VV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I'd prefer the "K3" to be a fully functioned base HF radio, dual receive, built in PSU-Amp-ATU, FSK etc etc. You could always have VHF as an optional extra ?? The RL line goes to the base of Q10, which is the switching transistor. It's possible that connecting MK to RL will cause Q10 to conduct and effectively earth RL-1 and switch it on. I think for safety's sake, I'll put a resistor between MK and RL: I don't want to blow Q10. Eathing MK (pin 4) will switch RL-1 on, too I'll have a trial run - MK to earth - and then see if I can do something with RL via COM1/CTS/RTS + optoisolator, which would be a much more elegant solution. 73 Bob 2M0KDZ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
