[Elecraft] KX3 BC Breakthrough
After being QRT for a number of years I'm returning to the air with a new call and location. I am seriously considering buying a KX3 (I have a K2 and a K1), but I'm a little concerned by reports of AM breakthrough (or whatever the right word is). I know this is because of the direct conversion architecture of the rig. I also understand that the IK can be shifted to 8KHz, which should solve the problem, but in doing so makes the narrower roofing filters and dual watch inoperable. How many owners are having problems with AM BC breakthrough. I guess it's mainly an EU problem. Re: [Elecraft] Loop antenna's
Good discussions. No silver bullet. I am trying to decide what to do when travling, often by bike and overseas. My current strategy is close to half wave vertical. But shooting with a slingshot takes time. A small fiberglass pole (2 .5 folded', 22' unfolded) may help when trees are not around. Also, sometimes the performance is not that good because of poor soil conductivity or lack of higher angle of radiation. I am tempted to have a dipole with TV line but it is an extra hassle. Also good performance is not be there until half a wave high. I had best luck with long wire, which can also be described as a form of inv L. But it needs a second support. 73, Ignacy, NO9E On Thu, Aug 15, 2013 at 12:10 PM, N5GE [via Elecraft] ml-node+s365791n757774...@n2.nabble.com wrote: Here is a good antennae discussion reflector email address, which is more appropriate than the Elecraft list: [hidden email]http://user/SendEmail.jtp?type=nodenode=7577741i=0. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 BC Breakthrough
Hi Paul, The vast majority of KX3 users don't have any issues with strong AM broadcast stations. However, for those who do, we provide RX SHFT settings as well as control over preamp gain. These are the same signal-management strategies used by other companies using this receiver architecture. Typically, dropping preamp gain from 20 dB to 10 dB will do the trick, or you can use the 8-kHz shift setting. In either case, you only need to do this on affected bands. Shifting the I.F. does bypass the roofing filter module, if applicable. However, this only changes the close-in dynamic range of the receiver by 8-10 dB, which still leaves the KX3 in the top 10 of all radios tested by Sherwood, etc. I still hope to provide a smaller shift that allows the use of FL2 (1500 Hz roofing filter) in narrowband operating modes. The K3 uses a different architecture (superhet), which is inherently immune to narrowband AM IP2. But the KX3's primary application is as an ultraportable field radio, and we elected to keep it small and lightweight by using a quadrature-DC architecture. 73, Wayne N6KR On Aug 15, 2013, at 3:52 AM, Paul Barlow paul.bar...@upcmail.ie wrote: After being QRT for a number of years I'm returning to the air with a new call and location. If turning the Preamp off fixes the problem, that would be my first choice as long as I can hear the noise level drop when I disconnect the antenna. If removing the antenna doesn't cause the noise level to drop, then the preamp is likely useful for hearing weaker signals. In a QSO I'd still turn the preamp off to see if it affects my ability to hear the other station. If the interference is from a single station, you can use a wave trap. This is a series-tuned resonant circuit across the transmission line that shorts out that frequency. [Elecraft] P3 Double-humped Noise Monster
I am really happy I added the P3 to my K3. It is my window on the band. I can't imagine operating without it. I have had the P3 for six months now, but just recently it has started to display two big ugly humps of noise that drift across the display. This happens on all bands, but it might not appear for 20 minutes after switch-on. The double-humped noise monster is 30-40Khz wide and about -100 dBm level. When the antenna is disconnected the signals disappear but not the double-humped monster. There is no sound in the K3, so it looks like the noise monster is being generated within the P3. The frequency of the noise monster is incredibly sensitive to almost anything I do in the shack. It even shifts frequency if I put a few sheets of paper on top of the P3. If I put a book on top of the P3, the noise monster shifts completely off the screen (even with a 200KHz width). But it will drift back again later, whereupon I can remove the book and shift it again. This is a bit inconve nient, so can anybody tell me what is going on here? 73 Roger, VK4YB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Double-humped Noise Monster
Hi Roger, summer here, winter there I guess ... When I first got my P3, I had a similar observation. Periodically, but with no specific periodicity, the baseline would drift upward. Putting my hand on the top of the case sent it down. At some point, I had the scan at 200 KHz and realized it was some sort of noise that drifted through and with smaller scan ranges, it looked like the drifting baseline. My neighbor has a plasma TV, and at small scan ranges, it looks like noise. At 200 KHz, I can clearly see the spectrum and see it change as the picture changes. That's coming in through the K3 of course. I finally took my P3 apart, carefully sanded the contact points [some paint overspray there], and along the edges that were painted, put a drop of DeOxit on each contact pad, and reassembled it, making sure ALL the screws were truly tight. Haven't had the problem since. I think the P3 is a very high gain receiver, and is easily susceptible to extraneous signals.Making sure the case was electrically intact made a huge difference. I had some signals I couldn't tune to [they moved as I tuned], Elecraft sent me a new cable with the condition that I cut the old one up into small pieces in the trash. That solved that one. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org On 8/15/2013 4:55 PM, Roger Crofts wrote: I am really happy I added the P3 to my K3. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

A lot of the later D-104's were manufactured with ceramic elements instead. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Brian Denley Sent: Thursday, August 15, 2013 7:23 PM To: Brian North Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Astatic D104 amplified mic Brian: Is that with the crystal element or did you replace it? Re: [Elecraft] P3 Double-humped Noise Monster
Hi Roger, I had something similar with my P3. After cleaning the internal metal to metal contact points on the case, my problem disappeared. Good bonding (and tight screws) on all enclosure panels is essential. I also had another problem with wandering spikes on the display. It turns out my BNC lead was faulty. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 production firmware version updated to 1.41
My KAT utility and the web site still show firmware version 1.32 as production. Has there been a problem with 1.41 that I've missed? Thanks. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 production firmware version updated to 1.41
Between us, the problem is that we've boxed a number of kits with 1.32 installed and our practice is not to ship kits with back level firmware. That's all that's holding it up. 1.41 is fine. 73 de Dick,K6KR On Aug 15, 2013, at 9:13 PM, Gary Ferdinand alapa...@taconic.net wrote: My KAT utility and the web site still show firmware version 1.32 as production. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KX3 after market PTO knobs
I cannot speak for the wear and tear, as I've only had mine a short time - around 6 months. I can, however, clearly state that the feel is fantastic. I have never had a radio with such a solid feeling VFO. From time to time, they appear on the used market which makes them less pricey. Alan K2ACK Sent from my mobile device.
