Replacing the OS because you can't get a program to work is terribly Microsoftish. The fact that you can get VNC to show a gray screen means that VNC is not at fault, your Window Manager is (or at least how you're starting the WM is). Try running something simple, such as an xterm, from withing the vncstartup. Then, try using "startkde" instead. Re: [expert] VNC Gray Screen on Mandrake 9.1
Why replace the whole OS to fix one relatively minor subsystem? A safer way to the same result might be this one-liner: for i in `rpm -qa | grep vnc`; do rpm -qc $i; done Then go look at the files that are listed -- particularly looking for *.rpmnew or *.~. Another option is to urpme all your vnc packages, rename or delete any vnc config in /etc or your home directory, then urpmi the vnc packages you want. As a workaround, you should be able to set your DISPLAY to the VNC display i.e. "typeset -x DISPLAY=:1" and launch an xterm. From there you can start your window manager i.e startgnome, starticewm, etc. -Mark -- Mark Belanger LTX Corporation Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [expert] VNC & KDE...
I don't get it. First, you refer to different window managers, then getting the java client to work. I'll try to help on both: As for window managers, you simply specify in the config file what to use. quote from the docs ( http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/docs.html ): "The script ~/.vnc/xstartup is executed after the server starts. If you want to change the window manager used in your VNC desktop, for example, this is where you should do it." As for the java client, read the docs, here is an exerpt: "Because Java applets can only make connections back to the machine from which they were served, each of the VNC servers actually incorporates a small web server. This runs on port 58xx, where xx is the display number, and will only serve the Java applet classes and an HTML page which contains them. This means that you should be able to point any Java-capable browser at, for example: http://snoopy:5802/ and you should, after a short pause, be able to connect to your VNC session. If you are using the X-based VNC server, you may need to specify the directory which contains the class files in the vncserver script. The Win32 server has the classes embedded in the server itself. Java implementations seem to vary widely both in how fast they can read from the network and how fast they can draw to the screen. It's worth using the Options dialog to experiment with different encoding schemes for any given network and browser. " I think the confusion may come from the fact that the Window Manager is not controled by the client, but by the server. RE: [expert] VNC & KDE...
I'm using VNC with KDE without problems... And yes, the java client is working. Try ./Xvnc -httpd dir_of_classes -httpport port Then try to connect your browser to the specified port. You should change /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers to add a line for a vnc server... Your line should look like: :1 local /usr/bin/vnx/Xvnc :1 -httpd dir_of_vnc_classes -httpport 5801 -geometry :1024x768 -depth 32 Since the java client is slow, you should use instead a plateform specific client... -Original Message- From: Vincent A.Primavera [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, August 28, 2001 8:22 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Balaji Ramani Subject: Re: [expert] VNC & KDE... Re: [expert] VNC
I remember not being very succesful with getting desktop environments to work(like gnome or kde) It was very easy to get the enlightenment window manager to work but not with some environment running on top of it. I pretty much just stuck with fvwm2. not as good as gnome but it looks a hell of a lot better than twm. Sam. Re: [expert] VNC with just gray screen - Resolved
You're right. I didn't need .Xresources. My problem was that the machine name that VNC was using to invoke the vncserver was not resolving to 127.0.0.1. I corrected /etc/host and it works now. Thanks for all your help. you need to look in ~/.vnc/xstartup. there, an xterm should be started and the twm window manager will be started. Hi Werner, I had a lot of problems with the VNC RPM on the Mandrake 6.1 disk. I was VNCing from work (latest version, 3.3.3 R2) to the VNC server at home. It had a lot of problems, and I finally just downloaded the binaries from the source and it works like a champ. Paul "Werner E. It is a "missing" file, but an unimportant one. First, this missing file has nothing to do with your VNC problem. Next, if the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop contains the word "GNOME", and you have Gnome installed, then that will be your default desktop environment. If it says "KDE", and you have KDE installed, that will be your default desktop environment. If that file does not exist, and you have both KDE and GNOME, it will default to KDE (bah!). If you do not have KDE or GNOME installed, and that file does not exist, it tries to run AnotherLevel. If that fails, it tries FVWM2. See the file /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients for the exact script I'm talking about. Regarding the VNC problem, try restarting your Windows box...? --Derek

That is a really good program. I remember embedding it on a Linux satellite router so people could use the X-based configuration tool... all they had to do is point a browser at http://10.0.0.1:5800 and the nice VNC java applet would start in the browser. What's even more interesting, it works on about any platform, and it's open source. Jean-Michel Dault [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Wed, 30 Jun 1999, James J. Yes, this is a great program for whatever operating system you use. I use it to access several machine that I need to use at work NT Server, win95 system, win98 system, linux mandrake system, mac, that way I can sit at one place and do support calls for almost any operating system problem our customer can come up with. we have a customer ( a water treatment plant) that has a winCE device, they are using it and a rf network card to access another computer that controlles all the valves and has all the line monitors for the whole plant, with this they can be in a remote building with the winCE device and change the operation and see the results onscreen as they work. they used to have a person at the computer and one that was going thru the buildings looking at gauges etc. then he would radio back to change a valve setting - it took several calls and they sometimes misunderstood before they would get a valve adjusted corectly.
