Re: [Fink-users] python and tkinter...
Tkinter comes with all Python distributions by default since 1.5 or so. So, just try to import it by doing: from Tkinter import * or import Tkinter if you don't like namespace pollution. REMARK: Tkinter is configured for X Window System only, not for Aqua. Actually, there's no Tkinter for Aqua available for pre-2.3 versions of Python, AFAIK. For Python 2.3a1 or higher, there is. I only needed to add the following lines to my ~/.emacs file. ;; ess (emacs-speak-statistics) (load "/Users/MyHomeDirectory/ess-5.1.24/lisp/ess-site") I hope this helps. The postgresql makefile hacks I made basically decide whether to make a dylib or bundle depending on the file extension (easiest way to do it without rewriting large bits of their make system :P) So now that it's making a dylib, it's not adding undefined suppress and flat_namespace. I'll have to figure out how to make it play nicely. The problem is it appears most of the settings in the postgresql makefile don't do anything, because tclConfig.sh has it's own link line that doesn't end up including postgresql's flags. --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: ValueWeb:Dedicated Hosting for just $79/mo with 500 GB of bandwidth! No other company gives more support or power for your dedicated server http://click.atdmt.com/AFF/go/sdnxxaff00300020aff/direct/01/ ___ Fink-users mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/fink-users --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: ValueWeb: Dedicated Hosting for just $79/mo with 500 GB of bandwidth! Re: [Fink-users] success compiling and using KDE 3.1-16 packages
If you mean KDE failures on X11 beta 1, it's pretty likely that they were caused by bugs of X11. More specifically, your comment reminds me of a beta 1's bug related to color depth. KDE apps crashed on the 16 bit (thousands) color mode, whereas they run smoothly on the 24 bit (millions) color mode. X11 beta 2 fixed this problem. I would suggest a try to do "fink remove bundle-kde bundle-koffice" or "fink remove bundle-kde-ssl" if you have SSL-enabled version. With dpkg, exactly what you need to remove isn't clear, but the tip is this: 1. first try "dpkg -r kdebase3" or whatever you like without "--ignore-depends" option. This gives you a lot of dependency warnings 2. Add all the packages to kdebase3. This should eventually exhaust the list. Good luck Kow On Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at 04:42 PM, C. (Thanks, Michèle ;-)) But it turnd out today that there is a problem with this setting that probably evidences a piece of incompatitbility between the two systems. The symptom is this: 1. On X11, many apps crash in "thousands of colors" mode for monitor setting. Notably, WindowMaker and virtually everthing in KDE. They run just fine in "millions of colors" mode 2. In "millions" mode, though, XDarwin (rooted mode) crashes when I switch to Aqua. XDarwin runs just fine in "thousands" mode. Re: [Fink-users] Compiling on 10.2.3 with path = /usr/local
Since Fink saw many imoprtant chnages drastically, I'm afraid if my knowledge about this issue isn't outdated. That said, let me try to help you a little bit. First, how did you try to install your stuff into /usr/local? When I tried the same thing, I couldn't install Fink into /usr/local for base pacakges. The installer didn't follow the symlink /sw --> /usr/local I set up beforehand. After installation of base packages, I renamed /sw to /usr/local and everything went right thereafter. For now, it is planned that you can choose an installation directory other than /sw at setup stage. It's not availabel yet, but you'll see it in a future release. BTW, do you *REALLY* need to install Fink into /usr/local? If your concern is library export and sharing (/sw/lib, /sw/include), you can set it up manually with Fink in /sw. For example, here are bash exports that enable such interaction: export CFLAGS="-I/sw/include" export LDFLAGS="-I/sw/lib" export CXXFLAGS=$CFLAGS export CPPFLAGS=$CXXFLAGS Fink web page has an instruction for this. Again, the question: What's a 'segmentation fault'? And is there a way around it? You've got an answer from Mono Toy. So, I won't repeat it. This happens to me enough that I suspect that some others are also seeing these. Without specific information, I'm guessing that the set of problems you're experiencing are caused by: 1) older version of packages 2) mixture of programs built against threaded and unthreaded version of X Window libraries As for 2, X11 from Apple is more susceptible to it than XDarwin, because it is not thread-safe. Even if you use the same program, or more exactly the same "code", the resulting binaries built on Linux and Mac OS are very likely to be different in nontrivial ways. So, if problems of this sort arises, the most likely source of problems is in your environment, specifically X Window libraries, in your case. Check out if your environment is reasonablly updated. If not, updated it *after* bakcing up all of your crucial stuff and data. This is specifically recommended to researchers who tend to rely heavily on their data. Apple's X11: Advantage: released by Apple Disadvantage: released by Apple Joking aside, Apple's X11 is a beta release, and hosts a lot of bugs and problems, in particular those related to international key layout, though it is claimed to run faster than XDarwin (due to QuartzExtreme and OpenGL support?, but in my place, the effect is hardly noticeable, partly because my machine, PowerBook G3 256MHz is pretty old and slow, perhaps.) XDarwin is way stable and reliable and free from most bugs and problems that daunts X11 now, though it can be slower than Apple's X11. Everything else in wmaker seems to work fine. Has anyone else had this problem since they switched to Apple's X11? X11's Application Menu works just fine, but there are quite a few more things on the wmaker Application Menu besides applications. My .xintrc file has the following: source /sw/bin/init.sh exec wmaker On X11, WindowMaker crashes as soon as I touch on the bar. So, I can't help with this. 2) I tried to set up bash. I downloaded Fink's bash package and installed it. I then followed the directions in the README file for setting up config files, but I can not get the Terminal app to change to bash. So, do you want to get bash to be your login shell, right? If so, the rigth way to go is edit your user profile with NetInfo Manger. OS X is very different on this shell setup. Caveat: any modification to NetInfo can be UTTERLY FATAL. There is a great risk to screw up your system instantly. Beware. Also, I can not get chsh to work from the command line either in Terminal.app or in xterm or rxvt when running the X11 server. What do you mean? You can't get it to work even by typing "csh"? I tried changing the Terminal preferences from executing the /usr/bin/login to /sw/bin/bash or /sw/bin/init.sh, but neither did anything but hang the Terminal.app. Are you on 10.2.x? or 10.1.x? On 10.2.x, you have /bin/bash, /bin/zsh, /bin/csh = /bin/tcsh, and set your Preference to /bin/bash, etc. (But it seems you need to hit return in the entry of path-to-shell to get Terminal to recognize the change you made.) Re: [Fink-users] xfree86-base fail (Sanjay Connare)
The current version of xfree86-base is 4.2.1.1-4. So, you'll need to update fink with "fink selfupdate" or "fink selfupdate-cvs" if you're accessing CVS tree. If you want to Apple's X11, follow instructions on Fink web page carefully. In particular, you need to install BOTH Users AND SKD packages. Apple's X11 is a public beta, and unfortunatley it's suffering from a number of problems that XDarwin has already solved, especially keymapping problems with international keyboards. If you value stability and predictability more than performance -- yes, it runs very fast, with OpenGL, Quartz Extreme support --, XDarwin would be a better choice. Hope this helps. Re: [Fink-users] Bluefish, Apple X11, and xfree86-threaded?
An update: This method revives XDarwin, but there can be deeper problems with Xquartz (= Apple's X11). If you have compiled tools/programs like Qt 3.1, KDE 3.1 against the threaded version of XDarwin, some, if not all, of them (or hopefully just their shared libraries) need to be rebuilt against threadless version if you want to run on Xquartz. Currently, I'm checking out what tools need to be rebuild. Kow On Wednesday, January 8, 2003, at 10:27 PM, Douglas Theobald wrote: Bonjour Michèle, Easy.
