Aging-horses and people!
This message is from: bkfjo...@aol.com Hi folks, Just thought I would join in here in Michigan on the 'oldies, but goodies' ! Anyway, we have two 22 year olds, two 24 year olds, one of which is a rescue we recently acquired, two six year olds, one of which is the other rescue and one five year old. They all get ridden except the 24 year olds. All are Fjords of course! We too have lost beloved Fjords and it sure is hard to make that final decision, but knowing it is for their own relief, is a comfort. Our first Fjords came 22 years ago and we have had many hours of fun. As a child, I rode my Dad's draft horses and purchased my first riding horse at age eleven, and here I am, still at it at 74. In fact, I ably showed my mare at a show last weekend and received a first in Walk/Trot Pleasure!!! Sometimes the days get long and the arthritis gets hurting, but I'm doing what I love. So, you youngsters out there--don't give up!! This message is from: bkfjo...@aol.com Regarding recent posts on Bozals; Yes, Karen is right on about Bozals! The one I bought about 40 years ago, came with a fijador, but I eventually took it off, as it was just a thin 'rope', which in time got stiff. Without it, we find that the headstall comes too close to the horses eyes, so we use a shoe string to tie it back to the throatlatch. Not a perfect situation for sure. But, it gets almost daily use on one of Sven's 'kids'. Bernie Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords In a message dated 9/8/2009 7:39:20 P.M. This message is from: bkfjo...@aol.com Hello, Our Circus friends performed in the Circus at Milwaukee and came here afterward for a one week stay. Their two girls had a great time brushing and riding our Fjords. And brushing and riding!!! Anyway, they said that due to lack of volunteers, the Circus Wagons rode in semis and flatbeds this year in place of trains. A disappointment to many, I am sure. I attended the parade three years ago, and there were many different breeds of horses represented. BTW, I still have my Sierokoski Wagonette for sale!!! Re: fjordhorse-digest V2008 #107fly allergies
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello fellow Fjord owners, Here at Nottawa Crossing Fjords, we are familiar with the fly allergies! Many years ago I had a Fjord mare that was allergic to them and I had to make her the neck and chest cover, as they were not readily available. Her pasture time was just in the early morning in hot weather. I tried the 'Spot-On' with her, but heard so much talk against it, that I discontinued using it. She did outgrow the allergies as she got older. However, her half brother is a different story! He wears the neck cover, fly 'blanket' and leggings, as well as only being out in the early morning on pasture. Night time turnout on dry lot is okay. Tried many other remedies that I do not remember, and being 17 now, he has not outgrown it. I've tried a couple of different flax feeds, with some results. Now I am feeding Omega Horseshine, as it is less expensive and easier to obtain. Also have tried the garlic supplement, with NO results. Our horses are out on pasture one and a half hours or so, depending on the moisture. The rest of the day, they are on dry lot, with hay. In the summer they are kept in during the day to minimize flies, as well as keeping their coats nice. One is never on pasture. It is a continuous job of checking hoof temperature, as well as ankle pulse to keep ahead of founder. Some of the horses, I can tell when I ride them, that they are 'off' and are sore, and they need to be cut back on time out on grass. Fjords do live to eat. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Regarding Horse Show Ribbons! Sherrie, I see someone sent you the web site that describes making items out of ribbons-the thing is, people having horses don't have the time to dedicate to that!! LOL However, I have some of ours hung on a curtain rod-works great and you can mount it anywhere you have room. And hubby made me some 'ribbon hangers' that are probably 1/2 inch wide, that are hung with screws with a spacer, so ribbons can fit over them-these can be made any length. These work great for the ribbons that have the strings on-just slip the string over the hanger. AND, something I just discovered, is the chain that some lamps are hung on-works great for ribbons too. Oh, and Karen McKarthy-I cannot imagine you having to discard ribbons How awful!! I have our ribbons since the 1950's!! HOWEVER, I did just recently have to box some up, but I can still get at them. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Fjord owner listers, FWIW, I have a couple of comments/suggestions regarding the overweight Fjords. Definitely do the Magnesium/Oxide. Limit their feed intake and go to four or more feedings a day to keep them more occupied. I have not heard of dry lot harming a horse! My farrier does this also. Perhaps when they are acclimated, you could 'pony' them, for more exercise. Discuss with your Vet, care taking management. Just my humble opinion. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Everyone, And yes, Jerry, we can agree to disagree! Such great discussions on the hoof trimming-should get more folks to thinking about what they want for their horses hooves! Anyway, as to the 'pinched hooves', this comes from very knowledgeable people, that, when the hoof is raised, it becomes smaller. Then, when put down, it spreads out, so, when a shoe is nailed on, the hoof is up (smaller) and when it is put down with the shoe on, it spreads and walla, a pinched hoof. Believe it or not. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Re-barefoot trimming: I am sorry Jerry, but I disagree with you on this one! (Usually you are right on!) My trimmer is one of the best, having 'studied' under Strasser and Redding and now has her own well tried signature trim. Some horses may have to adapt for a 'try out' period, but then are fine. Granted, the ground cover may be a factor-such as rocky or stony. But even so, they eventually travel fine, with better attitude, coats, and overall improved condition. The lack of blood flow makes a great deal of difference-without blood circulating, how could any animal be expected to 'work' happily and comfortably? How would you feel, if your foot was in a pinched condition continually? Yes, there are times when hooves have to be protected. We have used the plastic shoes with success when a horse was showing some soreness due to too much grass. And if the case need be, I would use boots as an option. As someone said, each horse is different. And, you will have to discuss with your trimmer, as to what they are doing, if the horse is not happy in his work, move on to a more knowledgeable person. Re: Natural Selection of Stallions -
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Listers, and CAROL, Honest to goodness Carol, ONLY someone with either a lot of time or money (or both) can come up with the ideas you do!!! LOL Yes, yes, this is an EXPENSIVE idea! WE are in not in Holland, where distances are 'relatively' short. How many trainers that are familiar with Fjords, are there in the US so that it would be possible to find one nearby to do the training, even if $1,000. was a reasonable price for 90 days? Ah, granted, just one $1,000. fee would pay for it! Perhaps we don't all want to be that 'aggressive' in this business! (I'm sure that will get a comment!) Our Evaluations are even not that easily available for some of us, so I agree with those that suggest we show 'all' that the Fjord can do. That is why we take our horses to exhibits-to show people a different breed and what they can do. AND, that is why we show at all breed shows-to show what the Fjord can do and that we have fun doing it. Just a Fjord being visible at Parades, Shows, Plow Days, etc. can say a lot. How many of these have you participated in Carol? I have been to a couple of the farms where they have the Sport Horse keurings, and believe me, they are out of my class, and I think if something like this was instituted, only the 'rich and famous' could afford it. Well, flame suit will be ready! Regards, Bernie Karns Michigan

National Show and Regions
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello folks, Here is MHO on the National Show discussion: Several years ago when I was on the BOD, it was suggested that we have a Fjord Expo. The idea was not widely accepted on the BOD, most thought it was not the time, nor were there enough people to do the work. I am not sure the membership is ready for it now. An event such as this is fun to talk about, but would be a tremendous amount of work. For whom? Volunteers! I have been in charge of horse shows and the thought of something on this scope scares me. Volunteers are hard to come by and the fact that they would have to come from all over would be a lot to ask. How many people can contribute the MONEYand TIME this would take? If the idea is to have more people see Fjords, how about an effort to have more participation in Expos? The suggested idea of Regions makes sense to me mainly due to the fact that distances would not be so prohibitive for folks to participate. Regards, Bernadine Karns Michigan Ride and Drive Safe

Re:
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Sue-Regarding feeding Fjords. Our young ones get more 'grain' than the older ones. We feed whole oats, with supplements. And when they are on good pasture, the amount is cut down. Sweet feed is not good for their teeth! I learned at a recent Seminar on Hoof Care which I attended, that horses do not need grain at all. Veggies would be much better, and whole oats are much, much better to feed. We feed a little pelletted grain to some of the Fjords, but it was cautioned at the Seminar about feeding pellets, as they are made from the 'fines' , or poorer grain. Hope this helps. Re: neckreining
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello List, Yes, I can attest to the neck rings-have two sizes, plus the rigid lariat. I feel the neck rings work the best for teaching neck reining. I had one mare that didn't take to cantering well, so I used a neck ring, and she learned quickly. The horses can balance themselves better without a bridle. This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For Ruthie, We have a King Harold granddaughter also-she is out of Sveisa, by Hjalmar. She was foaled in 1984. She is on the small side-13.2, but her willingness to work makes up for her size. She is a real sweetheart and the one that visitors love to ride. Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords Marshall, MI
Re: Any of Jensina's baby's out there?
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Michele, We have a gelding out of Jensina, foaled in 1986. His name is EARL. He does tricks, jumps, rides and drives, but his conformation is not Fjord. We love him anyway! Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords Marshall, MI

Newspaper article!
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello list and particularly members of the Great Lakes Fjordhest Club! Exciting News! Today I was contacted by the Detroit Free Press regarding coming to our club's Fun Day on October 2nd, to do an article on the Norwegian Fjord horse. This is a great opportunity to show what FUN our horses are. Hope to see many of you there! Regards, Bernadine Karns Marshall, Michigan
Re: Stallions, line breeding and Circus
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Karen and Misha, Well, I can't resist replying to this one! (No advertising intended!) I go along with the idea of a teeter-toter, as I use one in my 'Dog and Pony Act.' The horse seems to enjoy getting it 'just right' and hearing the oohs and aahs. He also does bowing, kneeling, crossing front legs, standing on a pedestal with just front feet, standing on pedestal with all four feet and playing 'rocking horse,' on a specially made rocker. This horse also puts hind feet on a round pedestal, this took some time to teach, as a horse cannot see where he places hind feet. Another horse does the circus bow, rolls a barrel and also does the pedestal stands. This is my way of quietly promoting Fjords for all of you! Dog does a few tricks, including jumping from horse to horse. As youngsters, these horses went through the TTEAM ground 'obstacle' training. (The one horse has been known to disappear into our arena and do the pedestal stands on his own!) Regards, Bernadine Karns

Re: Wolf Teeth/Sedation
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Margaret, Your comments on teeth were well put! We do the same with our horses. They must be comfortable in order to do their 'jobs'! Sorry, but I won't be at Blue Earth this year! Have a good time! Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords Marshall, Michigan

Happy Mother's Day/Horse Prayer
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello List Members! Just wanted to wish all the Mothers on the list a 'Happy Mother's Day'! Perhaps the Horse Prayer has been on before, but I thought it is a good one to include on the list. May Joy and Peace be with all of you on this special day! Regards, Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords Marshall, Michigan yer/title table width=100% align=righttrtd basefont size=4/header centerThe Horse's Prayer To thee, my master, I offer my prayer. Feed me, water and care for me, and, when the day's work is done, provide me with shelter, a clean, dry bed and stall wide enough for me to lie down in comfort. Always be kind to me. Your voice often means as much to me as the reins. Pet me sometimes, that I may serve you the more gladly and learn to love you. Do not jerk the reins, and do not whip me when going uphill. Never strike, beat, or kick me when I do not understand what you want, but give me a chance to understand you. Watch me, and if I fail to do your bidding, see if something is not wrong with my harness or feet. Do not check me so that I cannot have free use of my head. If you insist that I wear blinders, so that I cannot see behind me as it was intended I should, I pray you be careful that the blinders stand well out of my eyes. Do not overload me, or hitch me where water will drip on me. Keep me well shod. Examine my teeth when I do not eat; I may have an ulcerated tooth, and that, you know, is very painful. Do not tie my head in an unnatural position, or take away my best defense against flies and mosquitoes by cutting off my tail. I cannot tell you when I am thirsty, so give me clean, cool water often. Save me, by all means in your power from that fatal disease - the glanders. I cannot tell you in words when I am sick, so watch me, that by signs you may know my condition. Give me all possible shelter from the hot sun, and put a blanket on me, not when I am working, but when I am standing in the cold. Never put a frosty bit in my mouth; first warm it by holding it a moment in your hands. I try to carry you and your burden without a murmur, and wait patiently for you long hours of the day or night. Without the power to choose my shoes or path, I sometimes fall on hard pavement which I have often prayed might not be of wood but of such a nature as to give me safe and sure footing. Remember that I must be ready at any moment to lose my life in your service. And finally, OH MY MASTER, when my useful strength is gone, do not turn me out to starve or freeze, or sell me to some cruel owner, to be slowly tortured and starved to death; but do thou, My Master, take my life in the kindest way, and your God will reward you here and hereafter. You will not consider me irreverent if I ask this in the name of Him who was born in a stable. AMEN Author Unknown

Re: fjords foaming at the mouth
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello list, Regarding the foaming at the mouth.I have one mare that does this in anticipation of getting her hay! And our stallion does this foam/drool all over the bit when driving. At one show, we were advised that we should get him looked at, because he must be sick!! So you see, there are others out there that do the same thing. Regards, Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords, Michigan
Re: Stubborness
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Lynn, Thought we may have mentioned that-yes, they can be stubborn! But you just be patient, and they will come around. Re: More dog stories
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello List Members, THINK SPRING! Regarding dog stories; A friend of ours that used to raise sheep says they practiced the three 's' routine-shoot, shovel and shut up. A neighbors little dog used to run out to the road to bark at our draft horses, until one day when he 'overshot' and went right under them and out the other side. He never bothered us again! Its starting to be shedding time here in Michigan, to be followed by much brushing. Regards, Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords
Misc.
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello, Just wanted to say Hello to all the recent newcomers!! Regarding salt blocks; I was told that cattle are not lickers, so that explained why the salt blocks-mineral or white-never decreased in their pen. Loose salt sprinkled on their grain took care of that and increased water consumption, which in turn increased weight gain. CAROL: You recently stated that I can't imagine a Fjord with a Warmblood size head. Well, we have two of them! And one was even 'inspected' by Bob vonBon. The other is still growing. And yes, they each are truly All-Purpose equines. Regards, Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords Marshall, Michigan
Re: Round pen work + other stuff
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Niki, Thanks for bringing up about running the lunge line thru the bit, up an over the head and back down to the bit. I learned this many years ago, and although it takes a little longer to prepare the horse for a direction change, it works quite well and the horse is much more comfortable. Also, yes, the lunging caveson is a great help for starting a horse. Sometimes they can be found and purchased reasonably at Tack Sales. Also, I use cut up inner tubing for side lines-cheaper than buying! Regards, Bernadine Karns, in frozen Michigan.
Re: Norway trip
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello List, Just getting time to read some of the last months postings! Carol, I can do you one better than standing around at Horse Shows getting rained on by Cherynobil. We were in Germany at the time-on a three day Carriage Trip, just within a few miles of the stables, when the sky opened up with a thunder/lightning storm complete with hail! And then to find out that it was the 'fallout' from the explosion. What an unforgettable trip!! Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords Marshall, Michigan USA

Re: mouthing
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Susan, I'll jump in on the spur issue. Yes, yes, we do use spurs on one or two of our horses, otherwise, they ignore your leg. There was no adverse reaction, just oh, you REALLY do want me to do something. We have found spurs work better than a crop for negative reactions. And, on the Dentist, ours charges $40. Any teeth removal is additional. He does not tranquilize, but uses a type of 'stallion' halter he devised. The halter has a long rope attached which goes down between the horses front legs and around the belly and back to form a loop in the end, which he tucks in his belt. We feel we have diverted many problems by having him come twice a year. Regards, Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords Marshall, Michigan U.S. A.

Re: safety concerns
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Regarding Riding Helmets, We use them here for riding and driving. Three years ago when my husband had a heart valve replaced, his Dr. said this man must have no accidents!. Since then, we insist that persons that come to ride, wear helmets (we have extras). We take our Fjords to a friends ranch to roundup cattle and the helmets go there too, even is it does look silly, however, the ranch owner wears hers also! Haven't worn mine at an ADS show yet, but I have been assured that they are permitted. Regards, Bernadine Karns Nottawa Crossing Fjords Michigan

This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Meredith, Thank you for calling 'Fjord Quest' one of you favorite sites!!! That belongs to me-Bernadine Karns. I get discouraged, as I ask folks when they list with me to PLEASE let me know when their horses are sold, but they often do not, sooo, some of the listings are old. I will send the address to you, and if 'allowed', also put it on the list. Regards, Bernadine Karns, in Michigan

Re: Equitana
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cynthia, Good comments on Equitana! I have realized that for many years that even though a sale is not made at an 'Expo', or even at your farm, folks have seen the breed and eventually will buy from some breeder or individual. So this proves we all 'should' work together. It is a proven fact, as others have stated here that people will keep your card and refer to it one day. We assisted Nancy Roemer at the Columbus, Ohio Equineaffaire last April and even without the Registries help-their information material had been previously spoken for-we had a Fjord on display and supplied flyers in a booth shared by other 'small horse' breeds. Although attendance was down somewhat due to the show being on Easter weekend, the Fjord breed was seen and welcomed. Regards, drive/ride safe, Bernadine Karns

Re: HELLO FROM ROGER AND KAREN CABIC
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Roger and Karen, Good to hear from you folks! I was on the board when 'the suit' was ongoing and there certainly was no high volume of money then. It was a struggle to keep things going, so I have to applaud the BOD since then, to get back on track and be able to accumulate funds. Regards, Bernadine Karns Ride and Drive Safe
Re: new defense against flies and ticks, animal blessing
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Saskia, There is a Catholic church near us that has a 'Animal Mass' outside in the spring, where people can take their animals to be blessed. I took our Corgi last year. There were cats, dogs, birds, goats, turtles and rabbits. I couldn't go this year, but I understand there were horses as well as all the other critters. It was fun. Regards, Bernadine Karns

Re: misc. thoughts
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Duane, Know the feeling on folks just looking at us!! Glad to hear of someone else suggesting recognition for non-show participation. I posed this in the Harold some time ago, and did not receive any answers !! I feel that many folks can not do (or do not want to do) the shows, but the ones that participate in Parades, Exhibitions, etc. should also have recognition. I think I have also seen that one-strap 'show' outfit-quite eye catching, to say the least, huh. Some of the Halflinger drivers have 'interesting' outfits also. We also, find it difficult attending shows out of state. Seems there is always something left undone and always lots of chores other people have to do for you!! Perhaps regional clubs would be the way to go? The ADS has the country devided into regions, with representatives appointed. Lets have more discussion on this. Regards, Bernadine Karns

Re: Blue Earth Show and Evaluation
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Welcome Nancy to the list! Regarding the Evaluation: I would like to suggest that the following is included in the show information-owners name and address, sire and dam of all horses shown (listed with each individual horse) and a different numbering system used-it was very confusing to have one number on the program and a different number on the exhibitor. Also, a public address system! Concerning the Blue Earth Show-We attended in l989, and couldn't stay for the show this year (went to view the Evaluation), but obviously the show has grown and is not something to be ashamed of. Just wish it was closer. My thoughts are that a Turnout Class would be too much of a progression-why not try the class with the added trots, such as was suggested at the meeting? It would be a good place for folks to see what is required at an ADS show. Bernadine Karns, in Michigan
Letter of 9/22-Carol
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello Carol, Trying to digest your long dissertation, and want you to know that I strongly disagree with what you said regarding the other accredited judges. At least two of the judges, would be qualified to judge any of my horses at an Evaluation!!! You should know of each ones background before you make a statement such as that. Many good thoughts included, but lets not be hasty in making too many changes- the entire membership should have the chance for a say, not just those lucky enough to have access to computers. Regards, Bernadine Karns, in Michigan ( a former BOD)
Re: Fjords in costume
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This reply is in regards to the Viking Costume. If you can sew, go to the fabric store and buy a pattern for a viking costume- I made one for my daughter and it is very simple. I used fake fur for most of it. For the sword, we cut one out of cardboard and painted aluminum, to match the 'round thingie' which they carried on their arm for protection-that was just an old feed storage cover. Ended up looking great and she usually wins first place. For the hat you could also make that out of cardboard, but we had bought a plastic one at a costume store. Hope this helps. Regards, Bernadine Karns, in Michigan where the horses are also randomly getting winter coats.

Re: re-discovering how beautiful your horses are
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Julie, Our horses go through the 'rope grabbing stage' also-some outgrow it and some do not! I have thought about just letting them catch it when they grab and see if they would eventually tire of the game. But, on the downside, the ropes do get wet and nasty to handle!! Our one gelding is fed in one of the shallow rubber pans and his game last winter was to every day, neatly arange it on top of his water pail. He is one of our Fjords that I have taught tricks to, so I wasn't too surprised. We have tried the 'play-ball' also, and find that the geldings will amuse themselves with it, as well as the foals. Our colt last year would try laying on it-what a riot!! Regards, Bernadine Karns

Re: Blue Earth
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Steve, Well, I guess I did not meet all of the members which you listed!! Darn. It would have been nice if we could have stayed longer. Weather certainly was better than when we were there nine years ago!! Glad your Grandaughter did so well. ( They were nice, polite 'kids'.) It was great meeting you Steve and the other 'listers' I did meet. Will look forward to seeing the class results. Sorry I missed out on the Dairy Queen visit Regards, Bernadine
Re: dressage and bits
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] dtrupi and list, Agree with you completely on the Dressage Instructors-the one we used to have come here, couldn't say enough about them and stated that someday she is going to have a barn full on which to give lessons. I think that says it all!! I find that with some of the Fjords, it just takes a little longer, or more work on different things. Mine love to bend their necks-Dave style!! They think it is a game!! Bernadine Karns from Michigan-off on our Clubs Wagon Train this morning!! Our County Fair is celebrating their 150th year and the 'Train' is observing that with a week long Wagon Train. I'm just going one day at a time, as my back is giving me fits.
Re: Blue Earth, etc.
This message is from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cynthia, Love the button idea-but don't count on me to suggest a logo, as I am not good at that!! How about just a Fjord head and a heart, with person's name, and perhaps state they are from? I have found that teaching Fjords dressage is super for their balance, manuerability, mental outlook, etc. But, for some it is much easier to 'come round' and it doesn't seem to matter how big the neck is, they either catch on faster or they don't. (They will get it eventually). It takes lots of leg- ugh. Found out that there are camper hook-ups at the Fairgrounds, so looks like we will be bringing our camper. Hope the spots are not too far from the show ring-this old gal likes walking less and less!! Regards, Bernadine Karns
