[Flexradio] Delay on PTT with HRD.

2009-09-11 Thread Eddy Van de Velde
There is a known delay on PTT in HRD when PTT is controlled by CAT via a
virtual com port pair. No delay when PTT is controlled by a second virtual com
port pair and all other CAT control via the first pair.

It was thought that Vcom or com0com might be the problem. I have tried the
Eltima VSPD now and the PTT delay is exactly the same.

So, until a possible fix in HRD, I keep using two virtual serial com port pairs.

Re: [Flexradio] Anyone using HRD V 5.0

2009-08-01 Thread Eddy Van de Velde
Using HRD v5.0 with com0com and VAC on SDR-1000 here. So, the delay on PTT
is not an issue for the SDR-1000 only. The problem is not in the FlexRadio
hard- or software.

Simply use two Virtual Com ports for HRD-DM780. One Vcom port for CAT
control between PowerSDR and the second Vcom port for PTT control
configuration in DM780. No delay at all on PTT if configured this way.

I took the plunge and updated my version 4.0 HRD to version 5.0 and wanted
to see if anyone else running a Flex has done so and what sort of problems
they are having.

Problems I have encountered so far:

Long delay going into and out of Transmit HRD Bug was already open, so I
added a bit more for the Flex 3000 in use here.

I had a Blue Screen of Death before using an earlier version, current one
is 2277.

Have not entirely figured out the setup for waterfall settings, tricks and
tips appreciated.

Olivia operation seems to be somewhat improved, worked a ZL on 20 the
other night with a s/n of around -2 who was running Fldigi, which has been
slightly problematic in the past.

So anyone else running Version 5 of HRD?

Re: [Flexradio] HRD V 5

2009-07-05 Thread Eddy Van de Velde

I have HRD v5 running on my SDR-1000 using VAC and com0com.

There is still the few seconds delay when PTT goes via CAT control. No delay
when PTT control goes via second virtual Com port.

So, for HRD, I continue using CAT except for PTT. There is no such delay on
PTT with MixW nor with Multipsk.

Maybe this info can help others.

Re: [Flexradio] maybe someone has an idea why this happens

This is the same here with HRD-DM780 on SDR-1000. I use CAT with Com0Com
except for PTT control. HRD is configured for PTT control with an extra Vcom
port. I got this advise from someone on this reflector and it works perfect.

I never see this delay with MixW nor with Multipsk nor with Winwarbler. So,
I don't think it has anything to do with SDR soft- or hardware.

Occasionally the PTT doesn't work correctly for the digital modes.
A transmission start is delayed, a transmission stop is delayed.
The amount of time varies,
Where they should be immeadate, sometimes the start/stop is up to a 5
Mississippi.

It doesn't effect cw, which is darn near perfect.

But here is a clue.
Complete computer shutdown, with Flex5K shutdown and complete restart
cures the problem.

I can't make it do it, but at least I know how to stop it.
Sounds like rf problem but it's not often enough for me to get a clue.
And it only effects the AFSK modes, not phone or cw.

Any suggestion eagerly welcomed.

It has no function. The image rejection in ALL radios using the code,
softrock through Flex 5000, and using the test branch, are done
automatically and trained from on air signals. This is not true of
official releases and code in the trunk. What we are interested in is BUG

new code. It still needs further testing and refinement before it is
moved into the main body of the code.

Again, this note only addresses the test branch.

Chris,

Try John's N3WT solution. It worked fine for me to. No longer any PTT
latency with HRD and DM780 with John's setup. I never had this PTT latency
problem with MixW, Multipsk nor Winwarbler. So, it's a HRD issue only.

Good luck.

Eddy ON5UQ.

I notice the same latency with HRD, and only HRD. My solution is in
DM780 Options to click on PTT by Comport, rather than PTT by SW command.
Also activate and set PTT comport in PowerSDR to the correct virtual
comport. Then no PTT latency.

Also using Delta44 - Newest PowerSDR Software and Vac 4.09, Cat controlled
First there is no delay, but how more RX/TX or TX/RX I have in a qso
the delay increases up the 2 -3 seconds.
Some om's reported that already a year ago, but nobody payed much
attention to it.
I can reset the delay two ways, I go quick to STBY or click the VAC button
on the powersdr Desktop. Also not only a HRD problem.

SDR-1000 and Delta44 sound card and using MixW, Multipsk, Winwarbler and

With HRD only, I notice up to 3 seconds latency between clicking TX or RX

This never happens with the other three programs.

Does anyone know a fix for this, or is it inherent to the combination

I would love to hear an answer to this question also. I have stopped

Re: [Flexradio] TX in Digital Mode

2008-10-31 Thread Eddy Van de Velde

Tim and Brian,

Thank you both for this interesting operating tip and the clear explanation
of it.

I usually check my psk signal with KF6VSG's pskmeter that says my signal is
ok with SDR-1000 and Delta44 soundcard. Drive set at 30 Watts and TX Audio
Gain at 0.

Now I have checked with your procedure and found Mic level to be little over
0dB. So, that is at, or just over the very limit for clipping.

New settings are now Drive 100 Watts and TX Audio Gain at -5dB for 30 Watts
output. Mic level is now -5dB. So, no risk at all for clipping. The PSK31
IMD measured on a second receiver is -29 to -30dB.

Again, thanks a lot and 73.

I use to set the Drive to 30 Watts in PSK on my SDR-1000 and leave the
TX Audio Gain unchanged. I understand this is not the best way, is it ?

What Tim told you is correct but I haven't seen anyone tell you why so I
thought I would chime in.

In the olden days, the mic gain was how you controlled power output from
your radio so to those of us who grew up with older radios, this approach
seems natural. You would just advance the mic gain until just below the
level where you actuated the ALC (onset of clipping) and you were all
done. If you wanted less power you just turned down the mic gain. Now
most radios have a separate output level control so newer hams are used
to using this control to set power output.

What typically happens is that people set the mic gain control a bit too
high and then compensate by turning down the drive level. The result is
clipping at an early stage within the radio. Most analog radios can
tolerate a bit of clipping at an early stage. The result is minor
compression of the peaks and a minor increase in distortion. In fact, for
SSB operation this might even provide just a bit more punch to the
signal.

In the case of an SDR, the clipping is hard flat-topping, usually from
exceeding the range of the A:D converter at the audio input. The rise in
distortion is very rapid. So in order to ensure that all the stages are
operating linearly, one must be sure to keep the input level below that
which produces any clipping at all. Fortunately for us the Flex radios
have an indicator of input level. If that is indicating less than 0dB,
you are not clipping the signal in the radio. With the input signal at
0dB and the drive level set for 100, the output is 100W. If you want to
reduce the output and still make sure you have some headroom to prevent
clipping, it is easier to turn down the input level. Setting the input
to -3dB will produce 50W output. Reducing the input to -6dB will reduce
the output to 25W.

BTW, if you are operating PSK you need to realize that PSK31 is not pure
PSK but has envelope shaping in order to minimize the sidebands. This
means that there is amplitude variation along with the phase shift in the
carrier. It is a good idea to include some headroom so that the amplitude
peaks are not clipping. Setting the input to something less than -3dB is
probably safe but that does limit your average power output to 50W.

I hope this helps.

Virtual Audio Cable 2 for audio in, as it is for MixW and HRD and
Winwarbler.

WSPR settings are Audio in 0 and Audio out 0. Don't forget to keep your
system clock synchronised to a time server.

Subject: [Flexradio] WSPR

Does anyone have WSPR set up on the SDR1000 running? I can't seem to get
 it working.

Any config on WSPR and VAC that you can share would be helpful.

 Thanks
 Scott

[Flexradio] WIFI takes a lot of CPU.

2008-03-13 Thread Eddy Van de Velde
This my be off topic but there may be someone who had the same problem and be
able to help.

Until today, I never had any problem with PowerSDR on my computer P4 and
Windows XP SP2. CPU usage was never more than 20%. Even with antivirus and
other software running.

Today my ISP replaced the network cable with a WIFI with D-LINK DWL-G700AP and
D-LINK wireless USB adapter DWL-G122.

CPU usage is now 80% and more. PSDR and other software is very slow and hardly
usable.

Disconnecting the WIFI and using the network cable again, returns everything to
normal.

[Flexradio] Audio Balance Test OK.

2008-03-05 Thread Eddy Van de Velde
SDR1000 with Audio Delta 44 sound card.

Happy to report that the Audio Balance Test is working again from SVN 2047.

I had sent this problem to the bug list only a couple of days ago.

Thanks a lot to all the hard working Flex people !
