Re: [Flexradio] 1500 and THP HL45B

2013-09-03 Thread bearcreekcattery
Using the HL45B as an IPA to drive a PA works well. Consideration must
be given to hard line keying both amps. The HL45B requires making up a
keying line with a proprietary pin out (not a phono plug). If you are
"soldering iron challenged," Array Solutions will make one up for you.

[Flexradio] Amplifier for 1500

2013-06-22 Thread bearcreekcattery
Jim: If you would settle for 3db less power output, the THL 45B works
well in this application with the 1500. Cost around $450 new at HRO.
Array Solutions will build the keying cable, plug and play, if you elect
to farm that task out. I used one as an IPA to drive a pair of 3-500Zs
on 6 meters with a 1500.5 watts input1000 + output with this
train. The THL 45B is a sturdy little beast, as is all their gear!

[Flexradio] broad band noise

2013-05-29 Thread bearcreekcattery
Query: My 3000 has "phantom audio" issues, for lack of a better way to
verbalize, especially noted when pre amp is on and a strong cw signal is
received on an adjacent frequency, as far as 100 Khz off center freq!
Turning preamp off helps, but is not a cure. I operate this rig mainly
on 6 meters, for what it's worth, although band selection shouldn't be a
factor. This cw "splatter condition" is strong enough to be copied 100
Khz +/- above and below freq on which it is actually transmitted.

[Flexradio] 5000 discontinued (Cont'd)

2013-05-18 Thread bearcreekcattery
As I understand it, comparing the 3000 to the 5000, the 3000 has better
receive sensitivity on 6 meters which is important to me. Some of us
flex-a-holics contend that they may have tried to cram too many modules
into the small 5000 box. I am sure that there are those who will argue
this point. I have owned a 3000 and a 1500. I would like to see
multiple SO-239 RF outputs on the 3000, but other than that, it's the
most bang for the buck out there IMHO. It could be a mistake to
discontinue the 3000. I understand the marketing behind deleting the
5000 from the line. I wonder what that will do to the used secondary
5000 market? We shall soon see!

With reference to the Apache, with all due respect: "Be Americanbuy
American!" Tentec, Elecraft, Flex are the big 3 to me.

This is IMHO of course. Tubes are actually on their way back "in" with

My only issue with Flexmaking things work that are complicated. This
could explain why we see 3000's and 5000's for sale on ebay and QTH! I
figure that I will solve this little problem by buying a Tentec to use as
a back up when my flex is hosed up. The Flex will still be #1. Consumer
loyalty or slightly demented? Not sure which.

[Flexradio] Fw: 2.6.4 issue

2013-05-02 Thread bearcreekcattery
Not firewire drivers but just as quirky. 2.6.4 works now as it should
since I uninstalled virtual serial port emulator! Some sort of conflict
with these two programs, even though the emulator was shut down. Touchy
little thing.

[Flexradio] 2.6.4 issue

2013-05-01 Thread bearcreekcattery
I had been running 2.5.3 until my hard drive crashed. Made sense to me
to install 2.6.4 at this juncture. It seemed like the download went as
it should have and my 3000 is recognized. When I attempt to run the
program, a see a pop up window that tells me I need to update my firmware
to continue. That's curiousI have the latest 3000 firmware
installed. When the update option is selected, I receive a message
saying it's complete and that I should restart Power SDR. It just keeps
"looping around itself" repeating the same updated needed message, never
allowing me to go beyond that point. No joy! What's the workaround for
this?

Re: [Flexradio] Legacy Radios?

2013-04-17 Thread bearcreekcattery
I wouldn't imagine that the 3000 would not be declared "legacy" in the
near future. They say that the 5000's receiver is slightly more
sensitive and it can be lashed up with an assortment of modules. My 3000
does everything I want it to do, with the possible exception of its
potential to overdrive an rf amplifier w/o tieing it to an ALC circuit.
Some of the Tokyo Hy Power Labs linear amps come with a printed warning,
stating not to use them with SDR's w/o ALC. The SDR's have quite a few
interconnects that increase the possibility for induction of problematic
proximity static electricity.

I am looking for a back up for my 3000 and I just might select another
3000 to be kept in an shielded box under the bed as lightning tends to
find my rigs quite often here in Florida, just off the Gulf of Mexico.
Moving forward, I am hopeful that Flex will not follow in Microsoft's
footsteps, keying on knowledge gained after their introduction of Windows
8 which seems to be influenced by too much touch screen.

Re: [Flexradio] Microphone recommendations for 5000?

2012-11-10 Thread bearcreekcattery
If you want to go all the way to the top, look at the specs on the Heil
Pro 40. Adaptors are available for those who want "plug and play"
compatibility with their flex rigs. I know, many will say that this mic
is an overkill. For me, it was a good investment since I wanted
broadcast quality, durability and bragging rights. Available new on ebay
for about $275then, there is always the cost of the adaptors and the
PTT devise (hand trigger or foot switch). You will need an inexpensive
mic stand or a more expensive mic boom with or without a shock mount. A
"Pop Filter" is available which actually works! Very cool.

Re: [Flexradio] New 5000a Owner Panic

2012-10-12 Thread bearcreekcattery
RFI can occur when there is an impedance mismatch betweeen the
transceiver and the antenna. Coax acts like it's actually three
conductorsthe center, inter shield and outer shield. Ofter, RF
voltage feedback travels into the transceiver on the outer shield.
Straight out of the ARRL handbook. Usually more noticable on 10 meters
than on 80. Solution.tweek the antenna for less that 1.5:1 VSWR.
When computers are added to the equasion, RFI can be reduced with proper
groundinng and toroid cores.

Re: [Flexradio] Game changing

2012-05-23 Thread bearcreekcattery
Let's see it this post makes it, or winds up on the "cutting room
floor." My dealings with Flex Radio's Tim Ellison have come to a
screaming halt! He quoted me a firm price for a new 5000A with ATU and
second receiver option, $2998. I asked Tim Ellison 3 times to "check his
numbers" and he led me to believe that this price was firm. Well,
yesterday, I received an email from him saying that he had made a mistake
and the transceiver package price was $3499! He said that he made an
"honest mistake!" Where I come from, if a supplier or individual quotes a
price and the buyer accepts it, that's a contract. The arrogance of Flex
has turned me off for their gear. This is a real disappointment, as I
just sold/traded my IC756 Pro III and my Yaesu FT-897D package to amass
funds to finance the new Flex. Bottom linebe careful with companies
who zoom up to the top, as sometimes they move too fast causing customer
service to suffer. If I should buy another Flex, it would be a used one
from an individual, not from Flex Radio. I have waisted much time and I
am very frustrated.

Re: [Flexradio] the cost

2012-05-19 Thread bearcreekcattery
Observations from a big cat wranglerfor me, the only thing more
exciting than working with one of our big cats here at BCFC, a 501(c)(3)
non profit feline sanctuary, is taking a break between tours to sneak off
and work 6 meters on my little Flex 1500! Now here's the big news: for
many of us who are unable to plunk down 6K for a 6000, the introduction
of this new radio may drive the Flex 5000 market down to the point where
we may see, for the first time, these great 5000's available on the used
market as flex-a-holics trade up. As I spoke to Tim at Flex yesterday,
he communicated to me that there may be a few used 5000's available
directly through Flex, under full warranty, at price points that we have
never seen before. Not to shabby!
