 Hi all,
Installed 5.2.1 on a high load server - albeit not recommended - and
it was working perfectly with SMP support. It picked up 4 cpu's and
appeared to be using them all. (The box is a dual 2.4gig Xeon machine).
Anyway, the box was as I said under quite a bit of load, and would die
about once a day - just reboot. I looked into it a bit and found
whenever I put more load on (e.g. a make install in ports) it would
panic - vm_load_page or something like that - sorry about being so
vague. Anyway I took out SMP support, and now it boots with 2 cpu's -
one normal Xeon + HT for the second (no idea how to disable that - but I
don't need to)... its been running perfect for 4 days now and I put it
under SERIOUS load.. has anyone else had SMP problems on 5.2.1? I
couldn't find anything about it at first glimpse...

Have you shure this problem is with FreeBSD ?

First check your memory with some software like memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com/)

When I've this kind of problem, always it's because some error in RAM.

Yes of course, that's because in this directory there no many user, maybe
root, you,.

so it looks like only the one query is done by ls (i.e. it only looks up the

the output). How many directories are under /home? Unless we're talking

It does'nt appear to caching (repeating the ls a couple of seconds later

It's definitely the uid lookup? Not NFS /home or something

yes because :

FreeBSD 5.3 with openldap

2005-10-29 Thread Albert Shih
Hi all

I've some question about FreeBSD 5.3 using Openldap authentication server.

Everthing work fine, but it's very slow to do something like ls -l. For
each line there're a connection between the serveur and the Openldap
server.

On my Linux I can use some cache like nscd.

What can I do on my FreeBSD server to accelerate the basic operation by
using a cache system ?

Best regards.

Export snapshot

2005-11-05 Thread Albert Shih
Hi anyone,

I search some technic to exports a snapshot.

Let me explain little more. I've big nfs server (~1 To) to export by nfs to
my clients. Until now I've a second server too, on this server I run
something like rsnapshots (snapshot with rsync).
But now the time rsnapshots using for making every snapshot is very big.
For this reason I want to use ffs_snapshot, but I don't know how I can make
this snapshot accessible for my user (without sysadmin intervention).

Off course I can make a script to do (mdconfig, mount, export nfs etc...)
but when I need to turn the snapshot, if any client have mount the snapshot
I can umount and make mdconfig -d, event I can what's my client situation,
maybe I hang-up with NFS not responding

Anyone have a idea ?

I know that. What I ment was: as I'm going to recompile / reinstall java

Java-1.4 is older (more mature in fbsd patches). Can the same be said

On my server (use by students) I've install both of them (1.4 and 1.5) you

Re: Problems with upgrading 5.4 stable to 6.0 stable

I have been having repeated difficulties in upgrading from 5.4 to 6.0.
My problems start in the make buildworld step. The last successful
 compile step is:
 /usr/obj/usr/src/sbin/ipf/libipf created for ./usr/src/sbin/ipf/libipf

From that point I get a series of cascading errors. I tried ignoring
them, but could not successfully build the kernel. I have looked through
documentation at your site, but could not find a resolulution.

This is my only exposure to freebsd. I have several linux boxes at home
that I use with no problems. At work I am a unix (Solaris 8) and
 application programmer under windows.

 These are the cascading errors:

 === sbin/ipf/ipf(obj) mkdir; /usr/obj/usr/src/sbin/ipf/ipf: file exists
 *** Error code 1
 stop in /usr/src/sbin/ipf/ipf.
 *** Error code 1
 stop in /usr/src/sbin/ipf
 *** Error code 1
 stop in /usr/src/sbin
 *** Error code 1
 stop in /usr/src.
 *** Error code 1
 stop in /usr/src

Very easy to solve

cd /usr
rm -rf obj

That's work for me.

Sorry but I don't really known. I just find this because I buy a ML 350 for

I wonder what exactly you mean by 'format'.
We don't tend to use that word to mean making slices (fdisk),
partitions (disklabel/bsdlabel) or file systems (newfs).

Well the purpose is of course newfs.

Usually format refers to something done at the very low leval of
the drive and is normally only done at the manufacturer nowdays.
I expect you mean one or more of the others, but cannot say.

But, anyway, that is what you need to do - in that order.
   fdisk, disk/abel/bsdlabel, newfs

So, try and explain what you have done using these utilities if
you have and if you haven't, then check them out and see if
that helps. If you really did a format under XP, then I think
you can just start over with fdisk, but I haven't tried that on
a hard disk much less a firewire device.

You need to rebuild *all* your ports after performing major upgrades
(despite both being in the 5.x branch, 5.2.1 to 5.3 was such a major
 upgrade).

 portupgrade -af

OK.

 Kris

P.S. Why are you using an old version like 5.3 though? It's not
 recommended.

No I prefere make upgrade from 5.2.1 to 5.3 before 5.4, step by step
5.2.1 -- 5.3
5.3 -- 5.4
5.4 -- 5.5

;-)

Thanks for your answer.

Well, if you're just trying to upgrade to 5.5, there's no need to
upgrade all your ports in between, and you'll save a lot of time that
way. Quickest of all is to do a binary upgrade direct to 5.5, of
 course.

That's strange

And it's true for 5.4 ? Because in this time I can't upgrade directly to
5.5, it's virtual server running with vmware and I don't known if my
version of vmware can running a vm with 5.5 (But I known it's true with
5.4).

Lots of thanks.

I'd be extremely surprised if you couldn't run 5.5 in vmware.

Now I can tell you. But the first time I've install FreeBSD 5.4 on a vmware
he workvery bad.

When I start the FreeBSD VM Machine the load of my host (the server running

I use many time to find the solution : Put kern.hz=100 in

disk mapping

Hi all

I've question about freebsd disk name.

Actually I've a server to be change, but I don't change the disk array
(external)

On my new server I've install a FreeBSD 5.4 (without the disk array because
it's on production). When I try to switch the old server by the new one,
the kernel don't boot because the disk is re-map. When I've install the
FreeBSD the / is on /dev/da0(s*) (this is without the disk array). But
after I plug the disk array and reboot this is the disk array to have
/dev/da0. And of course the kernel don't find the /.

How can I fix this ?. I don't have the possibility to make many test or
install with the disk array plug (because it's on production).

For advance thanks

Xorg 6.9.0 xkb problem

Option XkbRules xfree86
Option XkbModel pc105
Option XkbSymbolsfr
Option XkbLayout us_intl
EndSection

and when I want type é I just need to type '+e,
and when I really need ' I need to use '+_space_

Well after my upgrade from 6.8 to 6.9 this thing don't work. I've try many
combinaison with all (not all of course) files in

I've don't find elegant solution. I solve this problem by reinstalling the
old directory
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb

in the new installation.

I've similary message on [EMAIL PROTECTED] but I don't know if
that's problem is on the ports or on the new release. Or maybe it's not a
problem but only a new kind of configuration.

Anyone can help me ?

 Hi all,

I'm planning on getting a HP ProLiant ML350 G4p server
(p for the iLO). Apparently this machine has a
Smart Array 641 controller for the SCSI HDDs.

I'd like to set up a RAID1 volume for the OS and
a RAID 5 volume for the data.

I assume the RAID volumes can be set up via
the RAID controller interface during the POST,
I think it's called RBSU or something like that.

I want to slice the RAID 1 volume for the OS
 with /, swap, /var, /tmp, /home and
the RAID 5 volume with a /data slice.

 No gvinum or soft-RAID.

I want to keep it as KISS as possible.

Does FreeBSD recognize the two volumes as
 two disks and behave accordingly?

Has anyone on this list successfully deployed
a system in such a way?

Or do you have any suggestion to improve on this idea of setup?

Sorry my english is not very good. I don't understand you problem.

If you want have two raid volume under you Smart Array there are no problem
to FreeBSD to use it.

Don't forget with a scsi card (raid or not) it's the scsi controller to
inform the OS what disk you have. It's not the OS. Then if you OS (like
FreeBSD) have right driver to use your SmartArray there no problem.

But don't forget if you use FreeBSD under ML serie (like me) you can not
use the HP linux software to manage (and watching) your hardware.

I prefer Courier-imap because it uses Maildir storage while Cyrus
uses something similar in that it stores each message in a file,
but Cyrus also maintains index files which can get corrupted.

Yes this is I known, but many «voice» tel me the Cyrus imap is for very

Several people have reported problems like this, all of them use

Very very slow

2004-09-24 Thread Albert Shih
Hi

I've very strange problem:

On a bi-pro Xeon 2.4 Ghz, 2 Go Ram, 36 SCSI-3 disk.

With Linux RH 9 everything work fine. But with FreeBSD 5.2.1 the server is
very very very slow. For example make buildworld use ~10 hours

I've another server with approx same hardware (same motherboard but with
integrated scsi chipset) on FreeBSD 5.2.1 and everthing work fine.

Anyone have a idea ?

I don't believe that, unless you already have all of /usr/src in

You need the new version of openssl, for do that you can upgrade your

make your src update (something like cvsup kernel.cvs)
cd /usr/src
make -DNOGAMES -DNOPROFILE buildworld
make buildkernel (with KERNCONF=your_kernel_config_name if you don't use
generic kernel)
make installkernel (with KERNCONF)
make -DNOGAMES -DNOPROFILE installworld (well in fact the FreeBSD-pro tell
you need reboot after installkernel and pass to single-user to do the
installworld)

After that you have a new and fresh version of openssl.

But you can also use a port for install a newversion of openssl.

As is detailed in the operational information below, snapshots

PATH problem

Hi all

I've PATH problem with a perl package (I don't knwon anything about

I run rt (3.8) under apache22 + mod_perl2 and on some p5 librairie I've got
message like

Command 'dot' not found in /bin, /usr/bin at
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/GraphViz.pm

and yes «dot» is not in /bin or /usr/bin but it's in

/usr/local/bin

So...how can I tell who ?(maybe www) to try to find «dot» in

OK.

Maybe my question is not very clear

The p5 package work in shell, because the PATH is in the shell.

But when I use the application throught the web it's not working. But I

And I don't want to change the perl package because that's mean on every

can be broken if my collegue make a update.

Thanks for your help

Check the shell script /usr/local/sbin/envvars. In short, any file
in /usr/local/etc/apache22/envvars.d is sourced into the start up environment
of apache, through /usr/local/etc/rc.d/apache22 start up script. Unless a
module or script explicitly cleans the environment before forking an external
program, the variabels set at start up are preserved.

The following should work for you:
 echo export PATH=$PATH /usr/local/etc/apache22/envvars.d/PATH

You may want to clean out the path a bit more, pending your security policies.

Sh.t it's not working.

Event I put

PATH.env

it's not working.

I'm going to do something very bad ;-)

ln -s /usr/local/bin/dot /usr/bin

If you're using mod_perl2, then Apache will default to setting up the
environment perl sees as if perl was running as a separate CGI script.
 See:

 http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user/config/config.html#C_SetupEnv_

 (defaults to 'On')

You can modify the perl environment from httpd.conf using PerlSetEnv
 or PerlPassEnv. See:

 http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user/config/config.html#C_PerlSetEnv_
 http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user/config/config.html#C_PerlPassEnv_

Assuming you do mean $PATH -- the executable search path -- that should
be sufficient to fix your problem. If you're really after $PERL5INC --
the path to search for perl modules -- while you can use PerlSetEnv to
set that, it's special-cased not to be passed through when running in
 taint-checking mode. It's generally cleaner to have a startup.pl
 script you require from the Apache conf, and that can have a BEGIN { }
block where you modify @INC before loading modules. See

 http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user/config/config.html#C_PerlConfigRequire_

 or (preferably):

 http://perl.apache.org/docs/2.0/user/config/config.html#C_PerlPostConfigRequire_

which does much the same thing as a perl 'require' statement -- the
difference between the two being that PerlPostConfigRequire happens
somewhat later in the configuration process.

YE.

It's working.

Lots of thanks.

Hi,

Hmmm, that's a bit bad. Is `Fn+F2' the key that turns wireless OFF/ON
for this laptop? Maybe the driver is crashing because the device
detaches and re-attaches while the driver is stuck somewhere :(

If you think you can grab a kernel dump from this, maybe it's going to
be useful to debug the problem.

OK I find the problem (and solve-it ;-).

In the bios there some (very strange for me) configuration for the wifi
card, it seem it's same card to handle wifi and bluetooth. And when I pres
Fn+F2 he switch to bluetooth and my laptop crash...

So because I don't have any bluetooth device I don't use it. After
disabling bluetooth in the bios everything work fine.

No driver (and of course not working)

  NetXtreme BCM5756ME Gigabit Ethernet PCIe

I don't see `BCM5756' or `5756' anywhere in the manpages or the source
of the kernel in of 8.0-CURRENT either. I think this is not supported :(

So that answer my question about change to current...

  usable memory = 4278091776 (4079 MB)
  avail memory = 4124418048 (3933 MB)

Heh, nice. I see you are running an amd64 build of FreeBSD, and there
are *lots* of memory on this laptop :)

Yes I known ;-)

One of the tests you can run, to find out what is broken in wpi(4), is
to build a kernel with DDB/KDB support, and grab a kernel dump when the
 wpi(4) interface stops working.

The ``Developer's Handbook'' can help you build a debugging kernel:

 http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/developers-handbook/kerneldebug.html

Using DDB to trace through the `live' kernel while it is stuck is a bit
tricky, but if you manage to grab some of the DDB output (i.e. with a
serial console or even just a photograph with a camera), then we can
mail the developers of wpi(4) and ask them for more help :)

OK. When I've some time I going to do this.

Best Regards.

Re: Disenchanted with ZFS; alternatives?

I have ZFS on my 7.1-PRERELEASE system, and while it does some spiffy things,
in general I'm a bit underwhelmed.

 PROS:

Adding new filesystems on a whim is really nice.

It has a lot of really cool other features that I will probably never need.

 CONS:

I have nearly 3GB of wired RAM, but it doesn't seem to be all that fast.
For example, starting an Amanda backup on a UFS2 filesystem would get through
the estimate phase almost instantly on a system that had been up for
 several
days because of cached filesystem data. On ZFS, it still limps along even if
 I
just finished the last backup a few minutes earlier.

Other than saying I'm using ZFS, I don't seem to have much to show for it.

 WTF:

Raidz and top-level vdevs cannot be removed from a pool.

At this point, I'm almost ready to go back to good ol' UFS2, but I'd hate to
give up that easy addition of new filesystems. I *could* have a single 700GB
root FS but that just doesn't seem right. Are there any good, tested GEOM-
based ways of getting that functionality, perhaps along the lines of using
something like gvirstor and growfs as needed?

Maybe my message is little in the wrong mailing-list

I'm have choosing ZFSunder Solaris because for some special purpose I
need a big space (~30To). So I've two Sun X4500 with Solaris x86-64

After one year I can say ZFS is fantastic file system for (IMHO) those
reason :

Don't have fsck (for 30To is very very useful)

Snapshots is instantly make.

You can put any number files in on directory (of course depend you
context but it's useful for me)

Very very rock solid.

For the last item, I can say that because they are «big» bug in the kernel
of Solaris when I start to using it. The effect is the server ... reboot
when it's heavy load on SATA controller. So I've many reboot (~30) in very
short time. Event that I never lost any bits of information on my FS.

To come back to FreeBSD, I'm using FreeBSD since 10 years, UFS is very
slow, and when UFS2 is release I'm very happy to switch to UFS2.

Now FreeBSD have ZFS, and I'm using it inmy scracth because I don't
really need ZFS on my server when they are ~ 100-1024Go disk. I'm using ZFS
only on my personnal computer (more because to make test and send bug
reports than because I'm really use ZFS)

Of course when ZFS is fully integrated and very solid under FreeBSD, I'm
going to very happy and use it. But at this moment for production and for
«small» FS I'm not really need ZFS.

I think ZFS become indispensable when the FS continue to growing ... a fsck
on 4 To is very very long.

When ZFS is stable

ZFS UFS2 ext3 UFS1

at this moment

UFS2 ZFS ext3 UFS1

Regards.

Nagios Jail

2008-12-17 Thread Albert Shih
Hi all.

I'm trying to install a nagios server in a jail.

I've a problem with check_ping.

[r...@]# /usr/local/libexec/nagios/check_ping -H some_host -w 3000.0,80% -c
5000.0,100% -p 5
CRITICAL - You need more args!!!
Could not open pipe:

So I think it's become the «ping problem». So I put

sysctl -w security.jail.allow_raw_sockets=1

in the host-jail-server.

In the jail I can make a ping but the nagios check_ping don't work.

Anyone have succefully install a nagios server in a jail ?
