My setup ensures that a friend of mine can come home and plug in a usb key with say, a movie on it, and we can view it easily. So, he plugs it in and it shows up under 'external storage', and if he removes it, it disappears. Of course, I made sure the drive was mounted read-only, to insure nothing has to be synced. After all, freevo is for *viewing* the media, they don't even know linux is there behind the scenes doing all the hard work :P Benedikt > Evan signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- Open Source Business Conference (OSBC), March 24-25, 2009, San Francisco, CA -OSBC tackles the biggest issue in open source: Open Sourcing the Enterprise -Strategies to boost innovation and cut costs with open source participation -Receive a $600 discount off the registration fee with the source code: SFAD http://p.sf.net/sfu/XcvMzF8H___ Freevo-users mailing list Freevo-users@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freevo-users

Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo volume control question
Hey Duncan, Huge thanks for replying. The thing is I use irexec, but freevo does not monitor the volume change. For example, irexec sets the volume via amixer -or similar- but Freevo does not know about that. I'm, using 1.7.3. So, when I exit my game, Freevo still shows the same volume, but the actual volume is quite different, and when I then hit the volume button (which is then again controlled by Freevo), it sets the volume according to the value before starting the game. What I'm searching for is either: 1) That Freevo detects the change in alsamixer2, and adjusts itself (of course, this should be configurable), but I think this is not implemented yet or 2) Have a command executed by irexec that tells Freevo to change the volume e.g. freevo volume up or something. I don't know if this is implemented yet. or 3) Write this patch, and submit it ;) (If someone agrees with me that this is a good idea =P) Cheers, Benedikt On Wed, 2008-06-25 at 18:55 +0200, Duncan Webb wrote: > Benedikt Bär wrote: > > Anyone has any ideas about this? :( > > > > On Sat, 2008-06-21 at 01:09 +0200, Benedikt Bär wrote: > >> Hi list, > >> > >> I have spent the last month configuring my super-duper awesome media > >> center with Freevo :) > >> > >> However there's one problem left: I have configured Freevo to launch > >> various native Linux games, like Nexuiz, Tuxdroid, etc etc... . > >> > >> Now, I want to use my remote control to control the volume of the game > >> while playing. [Freevo-users] Freevo volume control question
Hi list, I have spent the last month configuring my super-duper awesome media center with Freevo :) However there's one problem left: I have configured Freevo to launch various native Linux games, like Nexuiz, Tuxdroid, etc etc... . Now, I want to use my remote control to control the volume of the game while playing. I thought of using irexec and a lircrc. With the amixer command to control the volume. This works fine, however, Freevo (using alsamixer2 plugin) doesn't seem to monitor volume changes, and so, once I exit the game the volume is totally off. Would it be possible to make Freevo monitor the volume changes, or better yet, does Freevo have a command to remotely send the volume event? I know Python, so I could probably come up with something hacky myself, but I thought I'd ask here, just to see if someone already implemented this, or thought of it. Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo using alsa
Hi Duncan, I just solved this by changing the alsamixer2 code. It's not very generic, but it works for my setup. Basically, what I did was changing the volume change function to iterate through the controls list, and applying the volume. Maybe in future releases it is possible to have some more configurations in alsamixer, to satisfy such set-ups. Also, an option to mute the channel by turning the volume 0 would be nice, as the "PCM" control on my card doesn't have a mute switch. I've also solved the problem with the idlebar volume plug-in, by changing the plugin.getbyname argument to "ALSAMIXER2" instead of "MIXER". Maybe the volume plug-in will be able to automatically detect this in the future. Thanks for all the help. - Benedikt This message is digitally signed by a PGP key, to verify it's authenticity. Hi again Andreas, I installed Freevo 1.7.8.1, and I'm using now the alsamixer2 plug-in. So far everything seems to work, except two things: 1) The idlebar.volume plug-in does not work with alsamixer2. Is there any workaround? 2) I have a separate input for my TV card, which loops into the 'Line' channel. I would like that alsamixer2 keeps PCM & Line at the same levels. Is this possible? Here's my current config: ALSAMIXER2_MAIN_CTRL = 'PCM' # ALSAMIXER2_MUTE_CTRL = 'Headphone' ALSAMIXER2_CTRLS = [ # (ctrl, card, default vol, min vol, max vol) ('PCM','hw:SB',90,0,100), ('Line', 'hw:SB', 90, 0, 100), ] When I remove the PCM line, alsamixer2 controls the Line volume, but not the PCM anymore :(. - Benedikt This message is digitally signed by a PGP key, to verify it's authenticity. Hi Andreas, I do have the all the 6 channel for the volume control. In addition, I also have the PCM control, which controls all 6 channels (like a general volume), so the sound card itself works fine in 6ch mode (I tested it with a DVD). However, the alsamixer plug-in does not control either of the 6 channels, nor the PCM volume. I'm interested in trying alsamixer2, but I can't find this plug-in when listing them in freevo. Re: [Freevo-users] Freevo using alsa
Hi Duncan, The Freevo box is directly connected to a 5.1 speaker system. When I open alsamixer on the terminal, I can control the global volume of the whole system with the "PCM" channel. However, when I'm on the main menu of Freevo, I can control the volume using the remote Vol+ and Vol- buttons. When I press one of these, the Freevo OSD will show that it's changing the volume, but no alsa line gets modified. I'm thinking that maybe the volume control is not using ALSA at all. Do I have to install some command line tool for this to work? [Freevo-users] Freevo using alsa
Hi all, I'm currently setting up my Freevo media center, version 1.7.3. I have everything working, except one thing: I have a lirc remote control, when I press Vol+ or Vol-, Freevo correctly displays the volume change. Same with the mute button. However, the actual system volume is never actually changed. I'm using alsa, and have activated the alsamixer plug-in. I have also set "PCM" (which is the correct channel, according to alsamixer) in /etc/freevo/local_conf_py (MAJOR_AUDIO_CTRL). This happens in the menu, as well as with mplayer, etc...
