flowchart n.: [techspeak] An archaic form of visual control-flow
specification employing arrows and 'speech balloons' of various shapes.
Hackers never use flowcharts, consider them extremely silly, and associate
them with COBOL programmers, card wallopers, and other lower forms of life.
This attitude follows from the observations that flowcharts (at least from a
hacker's point of view) are no easier to read than code, are less precise,
and tend to fall out of sync with the code (so that they either obfuscate it
rather than explaining it, or require extra maintenance effort that doesn't
improve the code). See also PDL, sense 1.

Panther and the forgetful Personal File Sharing

2004-02-20 Thread Clark Martin
I've got four machines that are running Panther with the same
problem. Three are PowerBooks and one is a Tower (which is why I'm
crossposting to the GX list). The all work well with one exception.
The setting for Personal File Sharing in the File Sharing system
preference doesn't stick. I'll turn it on then do a restart and
poof, it's off.

Two of the machines are brand new and very clean (little or no third
party stuff). The other two had OS X recently installed and are
likewise clean.

I can vaguely recall hearing something about this but of course
that's about all I can recall about it, hearing of it. File Sharing
works fine and it starts up manually okay following a restart but
that's not good.

All four are on either on a wireless or wired connection to a router
(they are on two distinct networks). I've set this up on OS X.2 with
no problems.

Does anyone know about this?

TIA

CD burning question: G4 iBook

2004-02-20 Thread Michael Shaw
Very simple I'm sure but I have never had to do this

All of my previous experience with burning CDs using Macs has involved
VST or LaCie USB external burners using Toast.

I just got a G4 iBook which has a CD burner / DVD player installed in
it.

Can someone point me towards a simple procedure or write-up about how
to copy CDs using a Mac like this one with an internal CD writer and
Panzer.

How can it be done without spending $90 for Toast 6? I just bought a 12

Wouldn't you just copy the disc to a folder, then put in the blank, tell
your application
that you want to make a disc of the cd copy in the folder, or drag and
drop the saved copy
to the burning application.

To copy a CD: (note this is from memory, because my Panther system is
at work I've got Jag at home)

Insert the CD
Start Disk Utility.
Select the CD Volume you want to copy.
Select File New Image from device
Let it go do it's thing.
Kick out CD.
Select File Burn From Image, select the image and burn,
Burning from the Finder is easier:

Stick in blank CD
Drag content to disk
Drag disk to Trash, which turns into a Radiation symbol.
Done.

Basilisk II in panther

2004-02-20 Thread Justin Petersen
Has anyone succeeded in getting Basilisk II to run in Panther. I copied
the ROM off of my LC 580 and the program seems to start to work, but
all I get is a black screen, and that's where it stays. I followed the
how to, but I never get more than a black screen. Any suggestions would
be great. Is that computers ROM just not supported. If you don't know
what Basilisk II is it's a 68k emulator for OS X.

Thanks,
Justin

FS: 12 PBG4 1gHz 768/40/Combo/Airport Extreme

2004-02-20 Thread Hal
I don't think I've used my once a year personal sale post to the
list, so here goes. I also posted this to the swap-list, but not
everyone here is on that list...

If you've already seen this listing there, please accept my apologies.

I'm selling my 12 Powerbook G4, and thought I'd hit the list before I
hit eBay. It looks brand new and has never had any problems. I still
have all the original accessories, CDs, manuals, paperwork, etc. It was
purchased new in September 2003, so it's still under the original
warranty and eligible for Applecare. I will include a copy of the
original receipt for the Powerbook (dated 9/30/03), so you can have it
for warranty purposes. The RAM and Airport Card were purchased
separately, but I can't find the receipt for them.

Here are the specs:
Powerbook G4 12 1gHz (DVI)
768MB ram (256MB base, 512MB in expansion slot)
40GB internal hard drive
Slot-loading combo (DVD/CDRW) drive
Apple Airport Extreme card installed.
Currently Running MacOS 10.3.2 (Panther)
It has all the usual specs of this machine (2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 Firewire
port, 10/100 ethernet, mini-DVI video out, internal 56k modem, etc.)
You can check Apple's website for the details. This is the current
model. The display is clear, bright and sharp with no keyboard scuff
marks on it. I used the Pixel Check LCD screen test software and could
not find any bad/stuck/dark pixels. The display is perfect.

It is in excellent cosmetic and functional condition. I've only rarely
travelled with it, so there are no cosmetic blemishes and the battery
holds a full charge.

I will ship the Powerbook in the original double-box, complete with all
accessories, manuals, CDs and packing materials. I'll need a couple
days to back up my data, and I can ship it as-configured or with the
original factory software configuration, if the buyer wishes.

This Powerbook is currently $1599 at the Apple Store, plus $$ for the
Airport Extreme card and memory (plus sales tax).
I'm asking $1600 plus shipping or best reasonable offer. I'll also
throw in a sleeve-case (Mar-ware, I think), to keep it nice and safe.
:-)

Basically you're getting $250 worth of upgrades in exchange for a 5
month shorter warranty with no sales tax.

Please email me off-list if interested.
