[gentoo-user] Why ity has to be so frustrating !!!
Good afternoon list. I am trying now for 8 days to make nvidia RAID works on gentoo systems; I pass trhought all stages, I had difficult make live cd works, then after it works I have to use the hard way to make grub install after all that I thought it was every thing cool and I would be allowed to run my gentoo, I was wrong. I had tried genkernel and Hard way ( a script to genrate initrd ) on kernel 2.6.16 and none of then work, always complaining that real_root wasn´t there and I could run a shell and really there was just /dev/mapper/control no raid device. So some wise guys said to me, there is a bug on 2.6.16 that doesn´t work with RAID 0, so I emerged 2.6.15-r1 and tried again both ways, genkernel and the other .. again none of them work, with a addin, my kernel panics at boot ! so were should I go now, just use windows because infortunilly every single hardware fabricant just think of windows users.. I can not erase my windows, and RAID on windows gives a real boost. So what is left to me is keep trying make the louse nvidia fake raid work on linux .. I pray for a wise guy that had done this before HELP ME ! I think I had tried everything I know and some things that I didn´t know either sorry for the large mail and the terrible english . but, could anyone help . thanks . Allan PS. The solution for me (so far) has been to run 2.6.15, at least until 2.6.17 goes Gentoo-stable. In other words, I have masked 2.6.16. I found the link which could be relevant and give further information to Google around: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=186842 The chief problem (at least in my case) was (taken from above link) is that 2.6.16 introduces the problem to this patch that limits dm-stripe to targets that are multiples of the chunk size. Depending on your RAID configuration, NVRAID could make use of dm-stripe, and thus you'll run into issues. -- An application asked: Requires Windows 9x, NT4 or better, so I´ve installed Linux -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

This is the same as asking: Will I have problems with the testing tree? And there's no real answers. I know at least a dozen people running ~arch with no problems AT ALL (I stick with the stable), but in the other hand we see everyday people complaining about problems with the testing tree and if you go to bugzilla you'll find out that testing is really for testing in some cases (but not all of them). If its still testing, its because there are issues OR it hasn't been tested long enough to declare it stable. So, its up to you decide wether you want it or not. I got Xorg 7 when it was still hard masked FOR A GOOD REASON (my chipset was better supported). But at work I use an nvidia card, and I'm still at the 6.8 series. Do you have good reasons? If not, wait for it to get stable, this MAY save you some trouble. The real question here is: If it ain't broke, why fix it? Re: [gentoo-user] Grub won't boot SATA WinXP disk
Hi, I have had a similar problem, and it was about the disk and partition numering. I have never had difficulty getting grub to play with Windows in the past, but that was always with PATA hardware. I have tried editing the grub configuration at boot time to see if grub doesn't like my drive number or something. I used the TAB autocompletion feature which lists three disks (hd0, hd1, and hd2). The former two are definitely my raid array based on the number of partitions they contain. The latter has only one partition (according to grub's TAB autocompletion) which is as it should be given that it is obviously the Windows disk. I'm at a loss here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I believe I am starting to understand this. I was seeing that ldap can authenticate in a lot of types, like , databases, files, and PAM do some things like that too or am I wrong ? as far as I know you are wrong. ldap is an authentication mechanism. it stores usernames, passwords, and much more. LDAP is *not* an authentication mechanism. LDAP stands for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, so LDAP is a protocol you use to access data stored in a structured way, called directory. An LDAP directory is a directory that may be accessed using LDAP. An LDAP server is a server that serves its data using LDAP. LDAP servers are used for a lot of things, and two of them may be single sign on or centralized authentication (they are different although related things). You are correct...I was attempting to highlight the distinction between a security storage mechanism (which is what I should have said) and a mechanism that does the actual authentication. To access data in a directory you may have to authenticate to access the data. This authentication can be done in several ways, and one of them is called simple bind: in this case you provide a path to locate an object in the directory and a password and the server compares the password provided with the password stored in the specified object. IIRC the PAM-LDAP module uses simple bind to authenticate an user trying to gain access to the system. This is, the PAM module takes the provided user and password and tries to authenticate itself against the LDAP server using the simple bind mechanism, translating the user into a path to locate the object representing that user in the directory. BIG WARNING: Don't do this unless you're using simple bind over SSL protected connections unless you want your passwords to travel (almost?) as clear text through the network. This MIGHT also not be a security risk if the ldap server and the service attempting to authenticate are on the same server. I usually did simple bind on the ldap server itself, and tls/ssl from all the other servers. I have seen xine and mplayer break multiple times or KDE loosing its themes, Yeah, but mplayer breaks if your breathe on it too hard, and Xine is not all that much better (though better than gstreamer, and overall the best in terms of stability). New releases of KDE often are so buggy that you 1) *have* to upgrade whatever is available to get the bugfixes and 2) can't really be certain that any breakage is related to library updates (or worse yet, only *partial* library updates, not all relevant libraries, because all relevant libraries don't necessarily have updates available at the same time), rather than just one of the bugs. 'Loosing its themes' I've never seen (but then again I try to avoid using KDE as much as possible), but of all the things that KDE might (and has, in my experience) lose after a full, partial, or deep upgrade, themes are about the last on my oh, no, I'm now hysterical list. But that's just me. because of qt updates or wesnoth. And that are the ones I remember without to much brain work. That is why I am healed from --deep updates OK. It's your box. In my opinion, it's impossible to avoid stuff breaking (on a Gentoo/source-based distro) box; libraries and applications depending on those libraries are *going* to be mis-matched at some point or another, sometimes quite often. It's usually temporary, and usually easy to fix: recompile the app against the updated library, as I did yesterday for Beagle, or run name_your_language.updater-- I just found there's an ocaml-updater script; who knew? or run the config utility for gcc, or java or whatever is the problem today. Or switch apps, which is a little-thought-of but often quite effective solution. Helps to be a bit flexible, though, of course, which everybody does not have the liberty to be. But if not, then just stick with stable and don't upgrade at all, --deep or otherwise. Holly -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
