Re: [gentoo-user] dual boot: XP installed last?

you just have to rerun grub setup.

On one portable, The windows XP was a pain so I nuked it and got gentoo
working first. Now I need to install XP on the portable, but do not
wish XP to rewrite he MBR or any other such nefarious acts against the
gentoo partitions.

Any suggestions as to best methods are most appreciated. Heres the part info:
/dev/hda2/boot reiserfsdefaults1 2
/dev/hda5noneswapsw 0 0
/dev/hda6/ reiserfsdefaults0 1
/dev/hda7 /usr/local reiserfsdefaults0 1

hda1 is reserved for XP

Here's the portion of grub.conf already set up for gentoo XP:

title= Linux 2.6.17-gentoo-r8
root(hd0,1)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.17-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/hda6

title=Possible Windows P1
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

So I thinking after installing XP in the first partition,
all I have to do is execute/copy something to set up
the MBR so it sees grub.conf again, whilst XP is booted
up?

suggestions?

James

I thinking I just need to copy this

Hi all on the list; thanks for attention. I need to use fake RAID
because of windows ( I had incresed in 80% the performance of windows
because of the fake raid :) ). I know linux software RAID is good, and
I had already used on a box running just linux, but I really need to
use dual boot on this box, and I don´t want to loose the performance
of windows.

I tryed to dmraid + 2.6.16 and all I got was that /dev/mapper/* was
empty ( just have control node ). I had try 2.6.15-r1 and /de/mapper
was populated but kernel panics when mounting root system, it says it
can not find linuxrc and /bin/bash

this is the situation, and is been like that for days.

That's not correct.

I have a 4 disks software raid (1 and 5 + LVM) setup. The motherboard
has an integrated Promise controller that thinks the two disks
attached are a single logical RAID0 disk.

If I ever had a windoze on those disks it would run as if it was on a
single striped disc, according to controller BIOS.

While I was building this computer I also tested the software array
phisically removing one of the striped discs, despite the dreadful
error messages (the computer refuses to boot without an human
intervention) at boot Linux booted flawlessly, just marking the array
as corrupted.

As I said before, to help OP we need more details about his setup.

Side note: I use LILO. MB: Asus A8V-deluxe, no GRUB nor Nvidia here, so
YMMV!.

Hmm, this sounds like maybe you just have some extra and unnecessary
options on your kernel command line. What does /boot/grub/menu.lst
contain? If you see things like real_root= or init=, you _might_ be
able to take those out, depending upon what the initrd/initramfs
script does.

I guess to help futher I need to know:

1. The contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst
2. Whether you are using an initramfs or an initrd. If you don't
know, try cpio --list /boot/your_initrd_or_initramfs.img. If that
lists a bunch of files, you are using an initramfs. If it gives an
error, it is an initrd.

[gentoo-user] Why ity has to be so frustrating !!!

2006-06-25 Thread Allan Spagnol Comar

Good afternoon list.

I am trying now for 8 days to make nvidia RAID works on gentoo
systems; I pass trhought all stages, I had difficult make live cd
works, then after it works I have to use the hard way to make grub
install after all that I thought it was every thing cool and I
would be allowed to run my gentoo, I was wrong.

I had tried genkernel and Hard way ( a script to genrate initrd ) on
kernel 2.6.16 and none of then work, always complaining that real_root
wasn´t there and I could run a shell and really there was just
/dev/mapper/control no raid device. So some wise guys said to me,
there is a bug on 2.6.16 that doesn´t work with RAID 0, so I emerged
2.6.15-r1 and tried again both ways, genkernel and the other ..
again none of them work, with a addin, my kernel panics at boot !

so were should I go now, just use windows because infortunilly
every single hardware fabricant just think of windows users.. I
can not erase my windows, and RAID on windows gives a real boost. So
what is left to me is keep trying make the louse nvidia fake raid work
on linux ..

I pray for a wise guy that had done this before HELP ME ! I
think I had tried everything I know and some things that I didn´t know
either

sorry for the large mail and the terrible english . but, could
anyone help .

thanks . Allan

PS. ( for more explanations on what happened on my system there is a

I found the issue lay with Linux kernel 2.6.16 - I read a post
somewhere (which I have since lost track of) that hinted a bug/feature
of 2.6.16 meant some partitioning schemes would fail to be detected
correctly under NVRaid. The solution for me (so far) has been to run
2.6.15, at least until 2.6.17 goes Gentoo-stable. In other words, I
 have masked 2.6.16.

I found the link which could be relevant and give further information to
Google around:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=186842

The chief problem (at least in my case) was (taken from above link) is
that 2.6.16 introduces the problem to this patch that limits dm-stripe
to targets that are multiples of the chunk size. Depending on your RAID
configuration, NVRAID could make use of dm-stripe, and thus you'll run
into issues.

I was succeeded on installing gentoo base system and grub :-), but,

I had try the hard way, open a shell when it ask for real_root and on
/dev/mapper is just control.

I had try with genkernel and on the same situation on /dev/mapper/ has
control and my disk, but none of the partitions.

I am so close of making this work, but is really frustrating get stuck

Assume you're also using an initrd (with genkernel ... --dmraid ...).

You can set a password in the fstab.
I use this:

user,uid=smash,gid=users,password= 0 0

Works fine here.

I do not think you need \\ here. You only need this when running on
the command line since bash interprets '\' as an escape character, so
you need '\\' to get a single '\;. In fstab, try commodity\allan

Remember:

# echo \\

Also, cifs is better to use unless you are trying to mount something from Win95.

Among other things, it supports files 2G (or is it 4G?).

From /usr/src/linux/Documentation/filesystems/cifs.txt:

This is the client VFS module for the Common Internet File System
(CIFS) protocol which is the successor to the Server Message Block
(SMB) protocol, the native file sharing mechanism for most early
PC operating systems. CIFS is fully supported by current network
file servers such as Windows 2000, Windows 2003 (including
Windows XP) as well by Samba (which provides excellent CIFS
server support for Linux and many other operating systems)
  snip
The intent of this module is to provide the most advanced network
file system function for CIFS compliant servers, including better
POSIX compliance, secure per-user session establishment, high
performance safe distributed caching (oplock), optional packet
signing, large files, Unicode support and other internationalization
  improvements.

In fact I read on lwn.net that smbfs may be officially deprecated
soon...possibly in 2.6.18.

/etc/sysconfig is a RedHat invention. That's where they keep their
distro specific configuration and config files for system
configuration that RedHat has specifically built (G)UIs for.

One of the things I love so much about Gentoo is that it is so
transparent. There is no distro-level abstraction for system config
files. There are config files for daemons in /etc/conf.d, and for
various other housekeeping you would expect the distro to take care
of, there's eselect.

here is my question, I got a ATI radeon x300 video board on a fast AMD
processor with 1GB of RAM, should I install 7.0 from begin or should I
put 6.8 first and wait to 7.0 go stable ?

This is the same as asking: Will I have problems with the testing
tree? And there's no real answers. I know at least a dozen people
running ~arch with no problems AT ALL (I stick with the stable), but
in the other hand we see everyday people complaining about problems
with the testing tree and if you go to bugzilla you'll find out that
testing is really for testing in some cases (but not all of them).

If its still testing, its because there are issues OR it hasn't been
tested long enough to declare it stable. So, its up to you decide
wether you want it or not. I got Xorg 7 when it was still hard masked
FOR A GOOD REASON (my chipset was better supported). But at work I use
an nvidia card, and I'm still at the 6.8 series. Do you have good
reasons? If not, wait for it to get stable, this MAY save you some
trouble. The real question here is: If it ain't broke, why fix it?
Specially cause the fix may break it... ;)

Anyway, It's just MHO.

Re: [gentoo-user] Grub won't boot SATA WinXP disk

Hi, I have had a similar problem, and it was about the disk and

disk was disk 0, but when botting it was disk 1, I saw you try some
combination of numbers, but, you are sure about partition number ? it
was in fack at first partition your windows system ? I will try
something that way, I could help more if you print a fdisk -l here.

holpe it helps, Allan

but when I tell grub to boot this item, I get an otherwise blank screen with
 the text:

 rootnoverify (hd2,0)
 makeactive
 chainloader +1

 and nothing else happens.

I have never had difficulty getting grub to play with Windows in the past, but
that was always with PATA hardware.

I have tried editing the grub configuration at boot time to see if grub
doesn't like my drive number or something. I used the TAB autocompletion
feature which lists three disks (hd0, hd1, and hd2). The former two are
definitely my raid array based on the number of partitions they contain. The
latter has only one partition (according to grub's TAB autocompletion) which
is as it should be given that it is obviously the Windows disk.

I'm at a loss here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm afraid I have
to use my BIOS to switch boot disks until I resolve this.

To reiterate: There are some masked versions in portage. To see
all current versions available in portage I find eix is good:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ eix lilypond
 * media-sound/lilypond
  Available versions: 2.0.3 ~2.2.4 ~2.2.6 ~2.4.2 ~2.5.2
  Installed: no
  Homepage:http://lilypond.org/
  Description: GNU Music Typesetter

you can see from that that there are 4 masked versions in portage. If
you want a masked package you need to put the following in
 /etc/portage/package.keywords.

 media-sound/lilypond ~x86

If you want one of the later ebuilds from the bugs site you need to set
up a portage overlay, which is covered in the gentoo wiki, as pointed to
 elsewhere in this thread.

I knew there was likely some configuration issues to be dealt with, but
I noticed that the version of Apache on this box also didn't match the

After emerging this version of Apache, I now am unable to get any
response from the server at all: i.e. I can start and stop apache, and
there are no errors at all, but when I try to browse to a page on the

based on the page source (i.e. I tried first with a complex php app, but

 Any ideas?

You'll need to change some settings in /etc/sensors.conf for your sensor chip.
Your output seems a lot like mine with a default config so I'll paste the
relevant part of my config, I have a Asus A8N SLI-Deluxe with a
 it8712-isa-0290.

After you've modified /etc/sensors.conf you need to run `sensors -s` for the
changes to take effect. You also need to run `sensors -s` after a reboot.
Unless you use the sensors init.d script you can add that command
 to /etc/conf.d/local.start

[gentoo-user] ATI X300 problem

2006-02-13 Thread Allan Spagnol Comar
Hi all, I am running my box on a AMD64 with an ATI X300 pci express video board.

I don´t know if here is the place to ask for it but my problem is with
the video board module distributed by ATI, when I use the module the
xorg works correctly but if I change to text mode I can not return to
graphic mode if I try the system got stalled.

Anyone can help me with that ?

Thanks, Allan

what kernel are you using, and what version of ati-drivers? I had
similar issues, which are now gone with 2.6.15 and ati-drivers-8.22.5

as far as I know you are wrong. ldap is an authentication
mechanism. it stores usernames, passwords, and much more.

LDAP is *not* an authentication mechanism. LDAP stands for Lightweight
Directory Access Protocol, so LDAP is a protocol you use to access data
stored in a structured way, called directory. An LDAP directory is a
directory that may be accessed using LDAP. An LDAP server is a server that
serves its data using LDAP. LDAP servers are used for a lot of things, and
two of them may be single sign on or centralized authentication (they are
 different although related things).
You are correct...I was attempting to highlight the distinction between a
security storage mechanism (which is what I should have said) and a
mechanism that does the actual authentication.

To access data in a directory you may have to authenticate to access the
data. This authentication can be done in several ways, and one of them is
called simple bind: in this case you provide a path to locate an object in
the directory and a password and the server compares the password provided
with the password stored in the specified object. IIRC the PAM-LDAP module
uses simple bind to authenticate an user trying to gain access to the
system. This is, the PAM module takes the provided user and password and
tries to authenticate itself against the LDAP server using the simple bind
mechanism, translating the user into a path to locate the object
representing that user in the directory.

BIG WARNING: Don't do this unless you're using simple bind over SSL
protected connections unless you want your passwords to travel (almost?) as
 clear text through the network.

This MIGHT also not be a security risk if the ldap server and the service
attempting to authenticate are on the same server. I usually did simple
bind on the ldap server itself, and tls/ssl from all the other servers.

  Jose

Look at emege man page. Partiularly `emerge -s'

But you might like `esearch' better. Its on the portage tree at:
 app-portage/esearch (/usr/bin/esearch).

I don't nkow what ASN.1 or snacc is but if its a fill inside a package
you can't find it on portage.

One way to do it is find it on one of the distros that list files
inside there packages like rpm does. Find it on google and see what
package its in. There is a good chance the same package name or close
will be true for gentoo too.

  /erik

 as you see here:

 [ebuild N] app-editors/emacs-21.4-r1 +X -Xaw3d +gnome -leim

emacs has X and gnome as use flags. you could either put -X and -gnome
in your use flag list in /etc/make.conf, or you could use this command:

 # echo app-editors/emacs -X -gnome /etc/portage/package.use

 and then emerge emacs :)

Re: [gentoo-user] How do I emerge a masked package?

2005-10-28 Thread Allan Spagnol Comar
Hi Jules; there is a lot of documentation about masked packages on
gentoo.wiki.com and on gentoo-handbook but if you want to unmask this
package you can edit the file /etc/portage/package.keywords and insert
the line
=media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.10 ~x86

if x86 is your machine arch ...

good luck.

I should add that I tried to add it to package.unmask, but that didn't

Yeah, but mplayer breaks if your breathe on it too hard, and Xine is not
all that much better (though better than gstreamer, and overall the best
 in terms of stability).

New releases of KDE often are so buggy that you 1) *have* to upgrade
whatever is available to get the bugfixes and 2) can't really be certain
that any breakage is related to library updates (or worse yet, only
*partial* library updates, not all relevant libraries, because all
relevant libraries don't necessarily have updates available at the same
time), rather than just one of the bugs.

'Loosing its themes' I've never seen (but then again I try to avoid
using KDE as much as possible), but of all the things that KDE might
(and has, in my experience) lose after a full, partial, or deep upgrade,
themes are about the last on my oh, no, I'm now hysterical list. But
 that's just me.

because of qt updates or wesnoth. And that are the ones I remember
without to much brain work. That is why I am healed from --deep
  updates

 OK. It's your box.

In my opinion, it's impossible to avoid stuff breaking (on a
Gentoo/source-based distro) box; libraries and applications depending on
those libraries are *going* to be mis-matched at some point or another,
sometimes quite often. It's usually temporary, and usually easy to fix:
recompile the app against the updated library, as I did yesterday for
Beagle, or run name_your_language.updater-- I just found there's an
ocaml-updater script; who knew? or run the config utility for gcc, or
java or whatever is the problem today. Or switch apps, which is a
little-thought-of but often quite effective solution. Helps to be a bit
flexible, though, of course, which everybody does not have the liberty
to be. But if not, then just stick with stable and don't upgrade at all,
 --deep or otherwise.

Perhaps if you can tell us more about what you did, what got updated,
what went wrong, what was supposed to happen, etc., we could figure out
 how to fix it.

 Always a good idea to dispatch-conf, revdep-rebuild, revdep-rebuild.

So far I haven't hosed it bad enough to need a reinstall...

MySQL upgrade was painful, but the upgrade guide given

Not so painless on my end...

Revdep-rebuild failed to identify that postfix and dspam were (somehow)
linked against missing mysql 4 libs. Had to re-emerge them manually
(after realizing that the mail server was not receiving mail most of the
day), but after that things seem to be fine wrt the latest batch of

sorry by the way I put it Jeff I got to angry when All my services
stop working after an ( what should be simple ) update .

this update had stop all services I got on this box, that was an web
server for nagios and mantis, and dns server for private net the
database to nagios and mantis...

the first thing was the udev that stop working and I could not boot my
machine, it got a sgmentation fault at boot... got my gentoo install
disk and downgrade udev it got back to work.

then after some fight and gentoo doc I got mysql back. after that was
apache time, all configuration has changed and I got to go as crasy to
find where it was...

if isn´t that enough the named service was running and not responding

this was really a tought upgrade ( snip ) sorry again to pass
information incomplete to the list and overreact but I was trully in
panic after 2 hours trying to got the system back.

Yeah thats the way portage and emerge works. I'm guessing that the devs
decided it was the only safe way to guarantee a sane build, rather than
trying to restart the process half way through.
