About: PORTUGOESAS are the soprano Veronica Milagres da Silva and the mezzo-soprano Carolina Figueiredo, accompanied on piano by Carlos Garcia. PORTUGOESAS explore the traditional and classical Goan music, giving it an unique touch while respecting its roots Description Two singers, a soprano and a mezzo, decided to bring to life the music of Goa, a part of their cultural and ethnic heritage. This former Portuguese colony in India has a rich repertoire of traditional, classical and church music, yet to be disclosed. It is this blending of Western and Eastern cultures, with Portuguese and Indian themes, that gives it variety and uniqueness. The research conducted by Veronica Milagres da Silva and Carolina Figueiredo on this subject brought about a repertoire covering their own interpretations of traditional Goan songs, transmitted mainly through oral tradition, such as the mando, the dulpod and the dekni, among others. This study includes compositions of religious nature and tries to make known to the public classical pieces composed by Goan musicians, such as an unpublished mass in Konkani. I have read what Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão has written in response to Aires' latest post. I agree with Dr. Falcão. I will ignore # 4 and 5 supra. Not only are they gratuitous, they are also quite ignorant and offensive examples of exuberant crap. I will also ignore #1 supra. It smacks of rank prejudice against and unreasonableness towards CM Parrikar. wrt #3: IMHO, Aires is NO shining example of an exponent of the 'equal protection' provided by Art 14 of the Indian Constitution. (Will expand if needed.) Hence, #3 also ignored. Aires may be right wrt #2. There, indeed, might be protection for civil servants including doctors under existing law or perhaps .. NOT. Will try access a copy of the Bill/Act when available. There must be a reason why this Bill has been presented to the Legislature. ps: Seriously disappointed (but not surprised) as I am at the numerous U-turns that CM Parrikar has taken since his retaking the CM's chair, I know of NO ONE who is electable + elected + better than him for Goa at the moment. If someone including Aires knows of that someone .please advise. jc

[Goanet] CALVIM BRIDGE READY BUT THE TRAGEDY LINGERS
After the initial assurance that it would be completed in eight months and the various further extended deadlines, the Calvim bridge will finally be inaugurated today on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra. With the state coffers empty was there a need for this debt ridden government to release half page advertisements in today’s newspapers announcing this function? While we need to congratulate Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on being able to complete a first project initiated by his government we need to remind Manohar Parrikar that the mere inauguration of the bridge will not bring solace to the parents of those four young kids who continue to be distraught over a very tainted police investigation into the accident that led to the death of their little children. On 18th February 2012 in that horrific Calvim tragedy, six persons including four small school going children lost their lives, when a local bus plunged into the river overshooting the ferry ramp. Eye witnesses recall that Samarth Shirodkar the son of then President of Aldona BJP block Committee Mr. Shivanand Shirodkar was at the wheels of the 17 year old rickety bus. Locals say that Samarth who had been rusticated from the local school for misbehavior used to frequently steer the bus on a short joy ride till the ferry point while the driver alighted at the main junction. In a clear case of a cover up to save the real accused after a sloppy politically driven investigation, the police charge sheeted the bus owner Chandrakant Naik and his son Yogesh Naik who was wrongly named as the bus driver at the time of the accident. The police investigation has intentionally failed to fix responsibility on Samarth Shirodkar, the person really responsible for recklessly steering the bus into the river causing this avoidable tragedy. Everyone in the locality knows who the real culprit is except this government which has conveniently shielded him. The parents of those four young children are flustered that the real culprit after having driven their children to a watery grave is still at large. Will the Chief Minister who is also the Home Minister explain why the real culprit of this fatal accident has not been brought to book? Is this Government shielding the real culprit despite its vow of Zero tolerance, good governance and transparency. This government will have to face the wrath of those four angels now in heavenly abode and their grieving families who feel terribly let down. While the Calvim bridge today becomes a reality let us remember the victims of that tragedy. The four young girls Priyal Salgaonkar, Nagle Gracias and Elvina Dias along with her sister Diana Dias who lost their lives, not forgetting Dayanand Hoble and Josephine Dias who were also traveling in that fatal bus. The very bubbly 10 year old Priyal was the only hope for her widowed mother. Aires Rodrigues T1 - B30, Ribandar Retreat Ribandar - Goa - 403006 Mobile: 9822684372

I am amazed. Looks like jc has been having sleepless nights with the nagging feeling that he missed writing about his below point in his original croak about a spelling mistake in my post dated Oct 4 (Eastern). I thought this debate was over days ago even the Republicans have given up, fighting the original battle ... The EMTALA jc is referring to, is not getting money out of thin air. It is coming from federal tax we are all paying into. This provision is meant to prevent patient dumping with Emergency Medical Conditions (EMC), but it is being misused by people who do not wish to spend money purchasing health insurance. Because EMTALA is in place, it appears that jc is suggesting that we need not purchase health insurance. Am I correctly interpreting what jc is stating below? Anyway, not every hospital in the US have to follow EMTALA regulations. I can point to several people in New York who do not purchase health insurance whatsoever. Some may be having economic reasons, but there are countless more who deliberately DO NOT purchase insurance even when they can afford one. When they have a small Boo-Boo, they just show up at the ER, expecting to get free care. Please visit any of the NYC hospitals and evaluate the patients to see whether they all really have EMCs. I guarantee you 100% of folks with non-EMC conditions, show up at the ER because they expect to get free care. This is causing unnecessary clogging at the ER. These folks could very well directly make an appointment and visit a primary care physician or go to a walk-in clinic, but they wont - of course, that requires the patient to pay for the doctor's visit. So let me summarize my thoughts below: 1. Often times, good medicine tastes awful. My opinion is that Obamacare is good medicine for the runaway medical costs in the US. Over time, I expect the costs to come under control. 2. Obamacare is an affordable option for folks to get covered, who would otherwise be denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions. It has several good features, but the details are outside the scope of this discussion. 3. The Republicans initially tied their budget approval vote to de-funding Obamacare. Now there is no such talk anymore. So the original reasons for the government shutdown do not exist anymore. Which means the battle is already lost. 4. As a face saving measure for the Republicans, Obama may throw a bone or two in non-Obamacare areas. Republicans are widely expected to chew on the bones and move on. 5. In our old house in Goa (which was some 150 years old), there was no such thing as a guest bathroom. There was only one bathroom. However, I did demolish the whole house and rebuilt it. One of the reasons for the rebuild was that I did not like the bathroom we had in the old house! 6. Looks like jc's email (or his thoughts) got stranded for 7 days due to partial government shutdown in the US. My post originally appeared on GoaNet on Oct 4th Eastern. 7. The US government is unlikely to default on its debt. The biggest losers if that was to happen, would be the Republicans - both politically and financially. 8. Only fools keep doing the same thing over and over again, expecting to see different outcome! Republicans have been trying their stunts to eliminate Obamacare for some 40 times since its passing - it ain't going to happen. So just move on

[Goanet] Press Note from GFDO
October 11, 2013 PRESS STATEMENT GFDO expressed disappointment that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had completed the land acquisition started by the previous regime for Mopa. It is surprising that even though the Environment Impact Assessment for the second airport in Goa has not yet been done, both the erstwhile Congress as well the present BJP dispensations have assumed that the EIA will be favourable for the setting up of the second airport in an environmentally sensitive region. GFDO stated that Chief Minister Parrikar should realise that the time for blaming the previous government for every problem faced by Goa is now over. Goans are well aware of what has been done in the past. The moot question is, what is being done now! GFDO pointed out that the people of Goa had done their part when they voted out the previous government and strengthened Mr. Parrikar’s hands by giving him a clear majority. Since that day of much hope and potential, the people of Goa seem to be waiting in vain for the Chief Minister and his government to do their part. Mr. Parrikar will therefore surely understand why the people of Goa are so distressed that he has chosen to blatantly continue going along with anti people policies of the past that have been categorically rejected by Goans. He continues to go against his own people by acquiring their land and displacing them for the construction of a totally unwarranted second airport for the state. The people of Goa have a right to know why Mr. Parrikar feels the need to traumatise his own people by acquiring their land and disrupting their way of life, even before the Environment Impact Assessment that would throw light upon the very feasibility of this project has been conducted. His unwillingness to justify his government’s eagerness to construct this second airport, is certainly grounds for suspicion as to its motives in this regard. If Mr. Parrikar insists on going against the interest of Goa and Goans, then the people of Goa will be compelled to make their decision known in the near future as to the wisdom and merit of a government policy that is more concerned about fulfilling the profit motive of vested interests even at the cost of destruction of lives and livelihoods of Goans. GFDO said that it is now absolutely certain that the Mopa project is only in winter hibernation as long as the status quo is maintained for the land acquired for it from poor, helpless Goans. Until this land is returned to its rightful owners, the people are well aware that the shadow of Mopa is only “in deep slumber” to arise and torment Goans all over again once election season is over. Therefore, GFDO will not rest until the land snatched so callously from the people is returned to its rightful owners. Fr. Eremito Rebello Convenor
[Goanet] Pope Francis to consecrate World on Feast of Our Lady of Fatima
Pope Francis speaks about the Faith of Mary (Vatican Radio) A Marian prayer vigil was held on Saturday evening in St. Peter's Square, with a special catechesis by Pope Francis. The statue of Our Lady of Fatima from the Portuguese shrine was flown to Rome for the event. The Pope was scheduled to consecrate the world to Our Lady during a Mass on Sunday. *His prepared catechesis is re-produced below.* *Catechesis of the Holy Father* *“The Faith of Mary”* *Marian Vigil* *(Saturday, 12 October 2013)* Dear Brothers and Sisters, We are all gathered for this event of the Year of Faith devoted to Mary, Mother of Christ and of the Church, our Mother. The statue of Our Lady, which has come from Fatima, helps us to feel her presence in our midst. Mary always brings us to Jesus. She is a woman of faith, a true believer. What was Mary’s faith like? 1. The first aspect of her faith is this: Mary’s faith unties the knot of sin (cf. Lumen Gentium, 56). What does that mean? The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council took up a phrase of Saint Irenaeus, who states that “the knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary; what the virgin Eve bound by her unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosened by her faith” (Adversus Haereses, III, 22, 4). The “knot” of disobedience, the “knot” of unbelief. When children disobey their parents, we can say that a little “knot” is created. This happens if the child acts with an awareness of what he or she is doing, especially if there is a lie involved. At that moment, they break trust with their parents. How often does this happen! Then the relationship with their parents needs to be purified of this fault; the child has to ask forgiveness so that harmony and trust can be restored. Something of the same sort happens in our relationship with God. When we do not listen to him, when we do not follow his will, we do concrete things that demonstrate our lack of trust in him – for that is what sin is – and a kind of knot is created deep within us. These knots take away our peace and serenity. They are dangerous, since many knots can form a tangle which gets more and more painful and difficult to undo. But nothing is impossible for God’s mercy! Even the most tangled knots are loosened by his grace. And Mary, whose “yes” opened the door for God to undo the knot of the ancient disobedience, is the Mother who patiently and lovingly brings us to God, so that he can untangle the knots of our soul by his fatherly mercy. We might ask ourselves: What knots do I have in my life? Do I ask Mary to help me trust in God’s mercy, in order to change? 2. A second aspect is that Mary’s faith gave human flesh to Jesus. As the Council says: “Through her faith and obedience, she gave birth on earth to the very Son of the Father, without knowing man but by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit” (Lumen Gentium, 63). This was a point on which the Fathers of the Church greatly insisted: Mary first conceived Jesus in faith and then in the flesh, when she said “yes” to the message God gave her through the angel. What does this mean? It means that God did not want to become man by ignoring our freedom; he wanted to pass through Mary’s free assent, her “yes”. But what took place most singularly in the Virgin Mary also takes place within us, spiritually, when we receive the word of God with a good and sincere heart and put it into practice. It is as if God takes flesh within us; he comes to dwell in us, for he dwells in all who love him and keep his word. Let us ask ourselves: Do we think about this? Or do we think that Jesus’ incarnation is simply a past event which has nothing to do with us personally? Believing in Jesus means giving him our flesh with the humility and courage of Mary, so that he can continue to dwell in our midst. It means giving him our hands, to caress the little ones and the poor; our feet, to go forth and meet our brothers and sisters; our arms, to hold up the weak and to work in the Lord’s vineyard, our minds, to think and act in the light of the Gospel; and especially our hearts, to love and to make choices in accordance with God’s will. All this happens thanks to the working of the Holy Spirit. Let us be led by him! 3. The third aspect is Mary’s faith as a journey. The Council says that Mary “advanced in her pilgrimage of faith” (Lumen Gentium, 58). In this way she precedes us on this pilgrimage, she accompanies and sustains us. How was Mary’s faith a journey? In the sense that her entire life was to follow her Son: he is the way, he is the path! To press forward in faith, to advance in the spiritual pilgrimage which is faith, is nothing other than to follow Jesus; to listen to him and be guided by his words; to see how he acts and to follow in his footsteps; to have his same sentiments of humility, mercy, closeness to others, but also his firm rejection of hypocrisy, duplicity and idolatry. The way of Jesus is the way of a love which is faithful to the end, even unto

[Goanet] Sunday Column: What happened to the Goan Community who served in East Africa? By Mervyn Maciel
Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter of 13 Oct. 2013 at www.goanvoice.org.uk (For obvious reasons, this account is written more from a personal angle) Most of the Goans who, like me, came to the U.K. after Kenya's Independence in the mid and late sixties, encountered no difficulty in finding jobs either in the Civil Service or private sector. Some like Francis da Lima, M.B.E. from the Provincial Administration worked for the Customs Excise; the late Abe Almeida was with the Metropolitan Police at Scotland Yard and Caje Simoes found a job in that much-hated of government departments -the Income Tax department! Having worked for 20 odd years in the Kenya Civil Service, I didn't want to go back to a government job, and decided instead to enter the Private sector. After working in central London for a few months, and finding commuting and especially travelling like sardines in the overcrowded Tube cumbersome, I decided to move closer home and joined the South Eastern Gas Board (Segas) in Croydon, Surrey. Latterly, I moved to an International company within the Construction industry, again in Surrey. Some Goans quickly found jobs at the Crown Agents in London, and they must have proved such dependable and honest workers that the Establishment soon became an unofficial Goan Recruiting Agency. The one thing I found very irritating when registering with an Agency was the rather irrelevant question one was always asked, Have you any London experience? I had to remind them that I had only just arrived in the country and as such could not be expected to have any London experience. Those Goans who were in the teaching profession, and whose qualifications were recognised, found employment at various schools. Others who were not so lucky had to settle for clerical jobs. While in Colonial Kenya it would be unthinkable for a Goan to have control over European (White) staff, I myself, and no doubt other Goans in a managerial capacity had white employees working under them. Most Goans were quick to secure mortgages and move into their own homes, settling in the London and outer London areas initially, and later moving on to other areas of the country. My own Bank Manager was worried whether Kenyatta would renege on his promises, but when assured that my pension had been guaranteed by the British government, my overdraft was promptly approved! It was for the education of their children that most Goans moved to the U.K., and it is heartening to record that on the whole, the children of Goans who moved here from Kenya, have excelled at British Universities and many are now professionals in their own right. Socialising is very much part of our makeup, and even in those early days, when most of us had never experienced an English winter, we used to organise Christmas and New Year Eve dances at various London venues including Alexandra Palace. A clubhouse and grounds which we had bought in 1983 from the Times Group of Newspapers, and where we held many of our sports and social events, was sadly to fall victim to an arson attack, when it was burnt to the ground in 1998. A sad blow, but the Goan Association (UK) remains undaunted and continues to flourish. In addition, the Goans are also active in cyberspace; we have our own daily newsletter (Goan Voice UK), ably edited by Eddie Fernandes, while social networking continues via goanet. All in all, the GOAN DREAM has turned out to be a success story, and we continue to play our part as law-abiding citizens in our adopted homeland. Mervyn Maciel traces his paternal roots to the village of Salvador-do-Mundo and spent most of his working life in Kenya. For a brief bio go to http://bit.ly/17GMOV6

In the good older days every village had a doctor who was known as gaumcho voiz and paid by the government. Other doctors charged a nominal fee of I think two or three or may be five rupees. In case of cold and fever the medicine given was a mixture and the prescription could be read only by someone in the pharmacy. The medicine did not go well inside and lot of fuss had to be made and lot of beatings would be given and a force had to be used. By the time the bottle with paper markings got over the disease left your body and you are fine and fit. Many of the old were recommended to put leaches, cut veins, (xiro marop) ventos, sangri shake, etc. These doctors came on cycle, and sometimes walking. Most of the doctors were from rich homes and the profession was more of a hobby than money. Today aprofession has become a private limited factory. In my neighbourhood there is an elderly lady in her late seventies. Her daughter had come from australia and took her out for late night dinner, weddings etc she had lot of cold beer and ice cream for many days at the end of which she got some problems. A severe pain the abdomen. She was taken to the doctor who checked her and sent her for a blood test. Hundred and one blood tests were done, then ultra sound, ecg, chest and abodomen x ray and finally the most difficult one was endoscopy. All tests were negative, bank balance was minus and then the pain also dissappeared before the doctor's prescribed medicine was given to her. How did she get well ? her neighbour came and gave a peg of good caju feni for two days. all the cold dissappeared.

[Goanet] The IMB/IVG judgement...

I wonder if a judgement which says, inter alia, that the State shall make all attempts to preserve Portuguese culture for future generation could be binding on the authorities? FN

Mogal Ana Maria, There was an interesting vignette in your post. Part of what you state, surely, is true, and part conjecture, probably related to understandable non-information. Put yourself in the position of the doctor who was consulted. What would you do, esp with a patient you had never seen before but who had now presented with severe abdominal pain? That too in a small place within Goawith the ghuspott which follows every mishap (avoidable or not) As you probably have guessed, I am trying out the 'doutorbab doutorbab' snippets. You have just given me one scenario to incorporate (perhaps two) At this point, I'd say this to you: It is not easy to be a good doctor; neither educationally nor in practice. Besides, there are all kinds of (possibly wannabe doutors but couldn't) who spout (even partisan) nonsense about healthcare They are the ones, I submit, who are driving up the complexity and cost of healthcare for the doentes. And then there is amcho Fidelis who wanted to control the doutors without understanding doutorponn. There is no shortage of modern day Fidelises among our Goencars. More on another day Thank you once again jc On 13 October 2013 07:50, Ana Maria Fernandes amferns_n...@hotmail.comwrote: In the good older days every village had a doctor who was known as gaumcho voiz and paid by the government. The recent assault on Ms Deepti Ghosal, RTI Activist and Student of Mira Road is a cause for serious concern. As you are aware, the effective implementation of RTI Act depends among other things on giving adequate protection to whistle blowers/ RTI activists who expose the vested interests and corruption in Public Authorities. Unfortunately, Govt has so far not taken effective and adequate steps in the matter. I would like to bring to your notice , a resolution passed in the meeting of the Central Information Commission held on 13.9.2011 chaired by the then Chief Information Commissioner, Shri Satyananda Mishra The Central Information Commission expresses regret and takes note of the reported killings of and assault on the RTI users across the country. The Commission underlines the need to take urgent steps by the respective Governments for the safety and protection of the RTI users. The Commission strongly believes that it is the duty and responsibility of the respective Governments to safeguard the life and liberty of the RTI users for which purpose they should invoke the relevant penal provisions for the prevention and detection of such heinous crimes.. This commission therefore requests the state govt to take urgent steps in the matter by issuing suitable instructions to Director General of Police, Maharashtra as well as to all Commissioners of Police to take proactive and effective steps to give protection to RTI Activists in the state. [Goanet] Swiss of Goan origin comes searching for his roots
Swiss of Goan origin comes searching for his roots October 13, 2013 TEAM HERALD teamher...@herald-goa.com PANJIM: While few foster children would actually care to trace their roots, a Swiss of Goan origin is down in Goa to locate his biological parents. Manuel Aloysius Frick, 25, who was adopted as a tiny one year old by a Swiss couple is looking for his parents after 24 years. Manuel, presently working as a team leader with a multinational company in Switzerland, has visited every authority in Goa and is in constant touch with the private clinic where he was born, to gather details. Luckily he identified the names of his biological parents whom he has identified as Constantino Joaquim Afonso and Maria Santana and that they lived in Chorao. However, beyond this, his three-week-stay in Goa has not yielded any results. “I neither have any other information about them nor updates. I approached an adoption institution here which asked me to get records from a local Church but I couldn’t. The clinic where I was born has sought time to give details,” Manuel told Herald. With just a fortnight to fly back to Switzerland, where he has to resume work, Manuel says he will come back in search of them if this trip turns futile. “My search will not be complete till I find my real parents,” he resolved. Manual recalled that it was at the age of seven years that his foster family disclosed to him that he was adopted from a Goan couple. Since then Manuel made a firm decision to locate his biological parents. “I realized that I looked different from my other family members. We would go to a restaurant and all eyes would be on us. In the beginning it was not a good feeling but then I began ignoring people,” he added. His foster parents and the two siblings who are also adopted, have showered all their love and care on Manual of Goan parentage. “I owe everything to my foster family. They have given me everything in life,” he said while also claiming that the urge to see his biological parents will always bring him to India.

You forget about the chief minister and the land. For so many years non goans have occupiwed communidade land and have built their homes. Every communidade has members called joneros and then there are share holders and then the committee and then govt appointed bodies. Each time there is jon paid every one will assemble to collect the same but when general body meeting is called no one comes. what were the gaunkars who collect jon every year doing sleep all these years ? what was the committee doing sleeping or have they received something in return ? I know one communidade attorny who demanded money from the opponent for not attending court case so that the case goes in favour of the opponnent (tennant) lets not talk about it. if you have got guts file a case in the supreme court.

[Goanet] Article: Cyclone Phailin hits. Results
Good work India. Consider the fact 10,000 were killed during a similar storm. Mitigating factor: New technology and channels of communication leading to faster and higher level of cooperation in areas of planing, preparation and response... --- Cyclone Phailin hits 90 lakh people; 23 dead, lakhs of homes damaged PTI | Oct 13, 2013, 09.54 PM IST GOPALPUR/SRIKAKULAM: Cyclone Phailin on Sunday left a trail of destruction knocking down lakhs of homes affecting nearly 90 lakh people and destroying paddy crops worth about Rs 2,400 crore, but Odisha and Andhra Pradesh escaped from widespread loss of life. As the largest evacuation efforts in the country's recent history helped keep casualties to the minimum, reports from the two states tonight said that 23 people died, all but two of them in Odisha. Most of the casualties were caused by wall collapse, uprooted trees and in floods. Communication links were vastly disrupted by the strong winds that went upto a speed of 220 kmph when the very severe cyclonic storm crossed the coast near Gopalpur last night and weakened before turning into a depression. Ganjam district in Odisha bore the brunt of the storm. According to IMD tonight, Phailin weakened further turning into deep depression with wind speed of 45-55 kmph and currently lay over northern Chhattisgarh, parts of Orissa and Jharkhand. According to M Mohapatra, scientist (Cyclone Warning Division) of the meteorology department, the cyclonic storm has now turned to deep depression with the wind speed of 45-55 kmph. It currently lays over northern Chhattisgarh, parts of Orissa and Jharkhand. It is expected to weaken further late tonight, he said. A Panama-registered cargoship M V Bingo carrying iron ore was reported to have sunk in rough seas in the impact of the cyclone off the coast of West Bengal, but the crew were spotted in a lifeboat by a Coast Guard Dornier aircraft. Authorities in Odisha evacuated nearly nine lakh people, the largest in recent history, ahead of the storm to cyclone shelters and public buildings like schools to avoid a repeat of the monstrous 1999 super cyclone in which nearly 10,000 people were killed. We are on the whole quite satisfied with the type of evacuation that was done, Vice chairman of National Disaster Management Authority M Shashidhar Reddy said. In Gopalpur, where the storm struck first, almost 90-95% people had been evacuated. Defence and paramilitary personnel were deployed to carry out relief and rehabilitation measures and restoring infrastructure badly affected by the storm. The IMD earlier in the day said Phailin has weakened into a cyclonic storm with wind speed between 60 and 70 kmph. Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik said the primary aim was to minimize loss of human lives and they have successfully managed to do so. Property to the tune of several crores has been damaged...Rehabilitation will now be done. Giving details of the devastation, Odisha revenue minister S N Patro said 14,514 villages in 12 districts have been affected, hitting a population of 80,53,620. Over 2.34 lakh houses have been damaged and more than 8.73 lakh people evacuated. Over five lakh hectares of standing crops have been destroyed by the gushing waters causing an estimated loss of Rs 2,400 crore, he said. Power situation under control: Power ministry There were some disturbances in electricity transmission due to cyclone Phailin which struck Odisha and Andhra Pradesh last night, but were attended to in time, the power ministry said. Required load and generation were managed in a balanced manner so as to secure stable transmission frequency, it said in a statement. In Andhra Pradesh, the load was reduced to about 9,000 megawatt (MW) against normal demand of 10,000MW and in Odisha, it was 600MW against the normal demand of 2800MW. Based on IMD information, extensive prior preparations were undertaken to tackle the effects of cyclone Phailin in the context of power requirements, it said. Advance preparations were made to manage generation and load balance for unhindered and secure grid operation. Power stations in the region were also monitored, it further added. As required load and generation were managed in a balanced manner so as to secure stable transmission frequency. Also three Emergency Restoration Systems (ERS) of PGCIL were put on standby readiness in AP and Odisha for quick deployment in the event of damage. The National Load Dispatch Centre under the control of POSOCO was operating 24 hrs and in touch with the regional dispatch centres of POSOCO and the state load dispatch centre (SLDC). A high level team headed by additional secretary in the ministry was coordinating all the steps required including 2 hourly reports to all concerned, the statement further added. -- Albert Peres afpe...@3129.ca 416.660.0847 cell

My queries: 1: What is Ventos? Are you absolutely sure that 2: the child was fully cured after 2 days of antibiotics? If you know 3: What was the stated cause of death of the child eg TB etc? jc

[Goanet] Conversion and Citizenry: Goa 1510 to 1610
I am reading a book by Delio de Mendonca, a Jesuit and former Director of Xavier Centre of Historical Research at Alto Porvorim Goa, published in Delhi in 2002. This is a serious and unbiased treatise, of which many passages had me in splits and will have a similar effect on those who see the humorous side of everything. Of special interest to readers who have a fondness for history, this subject will evoke much surprise and bring in question many myths like that of Francis Xavier in his travels to Goa, preaching the Christian religion and Hindus in their thousands lining up to convert or perhaps another in which a sword was held at the throat to make people convert to the new religion. Here is an excerpt, words in parentheses and italics mine, for context, emphasis or an aside: Some months before the arrival of the ships from Portugal (of the new administration, since the governor's position was for a period of 3 years after which he and his retinue returned to Portugal), the Hindus used to go to the firm land to consult their sorcerers and astrologers to find out about the number of ships and the kind of new government that would follow. Some gaunkars or local residents believed that their situation could change or improve with the arrival of another viceroy or governor, but others expressed strong views on the subject, namely, that the civil authority was not responsible for conversions, but the priests of the Society of Jesus or the Jesuits. The locals argued that this religious group and others would always remain among them. Therefore sooner or later they would have to become Christians. However the religious orders were not always powerful as they wished to be, or as the locals believed them to be. Each religious order had its moments of prosperity and decadence, and they functioned accordingly. The Portuguese missionary activity was intense and extremely aggressive in the middle of the sixteenth century. The religious orders were engaged in competitive conversion activity, resulting in conflicts among themselves, since the royal financial assistance to each religious order depended on the number of conversions they reported. They were missionaries who were out to convert everything and everybody for the militant church. The Jesuits spoke often of missionaries with a 'vocation for India', meaning zealous persons with a proselytizing mentality, having great zeal and enthusiasm to instruct and convert Hindus. Intellectual talents were not demanded from them. But some missionaries overseas had complained that many religious men sent to India lacked learning. Fr. Nicolau Lanciloto, a Jesuit, wrote in 1545 against sending ignorant missionaries to Goa, because there were already many here. But it seems he was referring to the lack of skilled administrators to govern the Society of Jesus, and not so much to the missionaries directly involved in the work of conversion, for in this field anybody would be useful. Nevertheless, a good number of missionaries sent to India were the best that Europe could provide. Francis Xavier demanded from a candidate who claimed to have a 'vocation for India' the following profile: he should not be a young man but between 30 and 40 years of age possessing all virtues, but especially the virtue of chastity, since occasions to sin against it presented themselves everywhere. The heat and the licentious life in Goa, offered sensual temptations not only to the European layman but to the religious person alike (perhaps contemporaries are only following the old model). The climate of India being unfavourable to the observance of chastity imposed a heavy burden on the spirit. This requirement might have been strongly present in other religious orders too. Some Franciscan missionaries turned up as solders and captains in time of war and after war several soldiers entered religious orders, and strangely even during peace time some missionaries went about the town exhibiting their weapons. Five religious with the cross in one hand and a sword in the other accompanied the captain of Bardez, some religious men went about with arms in Goa in 1557, to the extent of making the Hindus remark that the bottos (Hindu priests) of the Portuguese made good soldiers. No wonder, then that the monasteries needed to have a prison for their in-disciplined clergy. The constitutions of the Archdiocese of Goa (1568) decided against the priests carrying weapons, settling disputes by use of arms, and threatening or hurting anyone with such objects. Some members of these religious orders said masses for six or seven years without being dutifully ordained priests. Soldiers who fought in wars offered themselves as candidates for religious life, despite the canonical impediment involved. It is probable that they entered religious life not for the priesthood but rather for brotherhood, for which there was no canonical impediment. Francisco
Re: [Goanet] A simple request to Joe uk bab
Vivian, Valmiki, Udaybab, any other generous soul resident in Goa, please invite Ana Maria for a good seafood lunch which will perhaps lessen her tirades on doctors and Catholic priests on Goanet. No chance of the Bishop doing it since he is usually accused of taking her hard-earned money. If AM were here in Toronto, I would have had the pleasure of presenting her with as much Barramundi (sea perch or Chonak) as she could eat. Chinese markets in my 'hood sell it for an extremely good price considering it is a high quality fish. Ok AM I am ready for your sharp tongue. Roland.
