Well there isn't much of one except the word Mum. Just an obtuse, Friday, friendly music recommendation:) I'm not trying to be clever or catch anyone out. Tenuous though the link was, I got it and wholeheartedly agree with the recommendation Damian, as do my kids (aged 12, 15 and 18), proving Mumford & Sons appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners. Indeed, it was my 15 year-old son that passed on the recommendation to me in the first place. I was fortunate enough to catch a couple of buskers (one on guitar and vocals, the other playing percussion a tea crate) doing a cover of 'Little Lion Man' in Dublin last month - a real crate-thumping crowd-pleaser! I would guess that Ubuntu uses this too. They have a list of supported scanners. http://www.sane-project.org/ The last time I looked at this I had great difficulty finding a model on sale which was supported by SANE. Most supported scanners in the list are either obsolete or very rare. However, most Epson scanners (at least the last time I looked) are supported by Avasys drivers. This is probably you best chance at getting support for a current model. http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver/ Although they have their own tool (Image Scan!) I use it with xsane. Installation depends on distro - I haven't used it with Ubuntu. There are deb files and a pdf document on the site. -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --

Almost any HP network or USB printer will install with minimal intervention on a modern Linux distro. Also Epson are very well supported. However, in general I'd recommend checking out support for specific models before you buy at: http://www.openprinting.org/printers Also look at the cost of ink/toner replacements before you look only at the cost of the printer! This can make a massive difference to the running costs. Good luck. Now I've realised I answered a question you didn't ask, duhh, apologies for that. Now let's try to answer the one you did ask. The scanner equivalent of the above pages is at: http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html If you want something portable and for less frequent use, I use a Plustek M12 OpticSlim M12 A4 USB Scanner which fits in my laptop bag, very handy for taking onto client sites where I don't have use of a scanner. If you want something with a sheet feeder it's probably worth considering a multifunction device such as the HP officejet range. Or Trust make a pretty nice slim flatbed model which a guy I know in work uses with Ubuntu. Next time I'll try to remember to read the question properly before launching into an answer ;^) -- Please post to: Hampshire@mailman.lug.org.uk Web Interface: https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hampshire LUG URL: http://www.hantslug.org.uk --

I ended up with an HP Photosmart C4580 wireless printer/copier/scanner that cost a lot less than the last dedicated scanner I bought and provides a lot more functionality. It plays nice with Ubuntu plus xsane, and the wireless function means that everyone can use it from anywhere in the house. We have even had a bit of use out of the copier recently. I use an Epson Perfection V200. This machine is no longer available but I do know that Epson supply Linux drivers for most of their scanners. Either their own or third-party.
