Nice computer. Kind of curious on why the Thermaltake case? Putting that
much gear in a case and do not get a case that will hide most of your
wiring. If you guys like I will take pictures of my current Gaming Computer.

The armor fully weighted (2 drives, 2 opticals, board, 2 GTX, etc.) is
66lbs. So, heavy so & so.

It's not really that much of a dust magnet. We sent one to NY a while back
that was a dead silent 8800GTX build; water cooled CPU; water cooled
SLI-8800GTX.

Bad thing about it: had to be Vista 64, and right now, Nvidia's driver
support for Vista, and especially Vista 64 SUCKS. Absolutely SUCKS.

It's just one of those things.. in XP, he gets full SLI. In Vista 64, Vista
only sees 1 card, and he gets way slower performance. The 680i chipset, for
all of it's pros, has some issues still. Asus came out with the P5N32-E
Plus, which is a hybrid chipset, the 650 northbridge and the AMD 590
southbridge.. so you get full x32 SLI, but it's so much more stable under
Vista 64 that it's sickening. Nothing wrong under Vista 32 or XP with the
680i, but under Vista 64, the P5N32-E just slices and dices everything out
there.

I'm going to try to take a lot of pictures today and post links, get this
list back on hardware. I checked the benches for what's being built and at
least I can get some good pics of an AMD Quad system, and a few other
oddballs I can get some pictures of to post and get some hardware discussion
going :)

FYI-

I am piling up in the backchannel and have now heard from 12 people who say
they can't post and keep getting bumped. Jim, my email to you bounces..
things OK?

Although, I have recently replaced my 2 nVidia 7900 GTX's with 1 8800 GTX

The Peripheral manufacturers need to work on their drivers for Vista. This
is the only problem. If you don't use a Soundblaster sound card or

I suggest you take a look on a computer demo at Best Buy or Fry's

I don't want to spend the time the new OS learning curve would
require only to have something prettier only to have an OS that costs
more, doesn't work any faster than the one I'm presently using. If
you'll examine MSFT's history every other OS has been troublesome.

I agree with Joe User. If you have to learn everything over you may
as well get an Apple. Remember the average end luser doesn't care
about hardware like we do as they just want the darned thing to run.
Vista has files & folders relocated via name space & extra links that
it makes it almost impossible to find the real files just like a Mac.

A Vista or Mac system for me, NO THANKS.

Slower? It is a bit slower on my Laptop, but on my Gaming machine it
actually works faster, especially in games. I think it because of the multi
cores.

Actually, It does not do much more than XP does. In fact I would not

It more than likely is a gateway router. Most are.

Easy to fix. Just use the Pop and SMPT information they use on Outlook to
the other programs. I use Outlook now because I put client/friends info and
make appointments within Outlook.

Most Internet providers do this. I have problems sending mail via my work
address. I just use my home address to send it with a reply-to my Work
Address.

All these Caps being damaged messages reminds to let you guys know that you
can drastically reduce the problem by actually buying high end Power
Supplies. If you spent $50.00 or less on a power supply, well may I say you
get what you paid for.

The power supply is the most important part of the whole computer, not the
CPU or RAM. If you get a power supply that sends bad voltage to the
motherboard and other components in the computer, you're going to have a
crappy computer. As you can see I am a big proponent of Quality Power
Supplies.

The current Tower I made uses a PC Power and Cooling power Supply

All I got to say is ROFLcopter. I was laughing my ass off.

BTW, I have had not one crash on my gaming machine with Vista Ultimate on it
since I installed it. Go figure eh? Also, only one Crash on my Laptop.

Now for using other Virus software you can. But you need to know how turn
off the Windows stuff. I use Norton 360, I know it is kind of lame, but it
was free and got it running on 3 computers which is in the license
agreement.

I agree the computer asking me if I am sure if I want to run this in admin
mode. I have a lot of Gaming stuff t hat needs to have it running in admin
mode in order to work. Gets annoying every time I turn the computer on or
reset the computer.

If you have a computer that was updated within a year or so of release of
Vista you should be ok. I do not recommend using it as an upgrade OS, but if
you buy a new computer you'll love it.

I am currently using:
Asus A8N-SLI
AMD FX55
4x512MB of Corsair XMS Low Latency DDR
Asus N6800GT
etc...
It seems to be running fairly well at this time. In fact in gaming it
appears to be running faster than my 3.2GHz E Pentium 4.

BTW, I am using Windows XP SP2 and not Windows XP 64-Bit edition. I
installed XP 64-bit and it did not seem to be working very well with WoW
and PlanetSide (My 2 favorite games.

The only lasting allegiance I have in this industry, where things
change too rapidly to have mass brand loyalty, is to Corsair. They
consistently have some of the best--if not THE best--memory around.
Their non-Value Series stuff is of top quality. This lends itself to
rock solid stability as well as good overclock characteristics, to
those that care about that (I don't). And I like Logitech mice and
Microsoft keyboards. :) All other loyalties are fluid.

I really do not care for the silence of a CPU at this point. Although,
I do not want it too loud.

I will post specs on the computer Soon. This computer is new and worked
well over the weekend as a burnin. Now I have just noticed the CPU

Hello all,
I am looking for a good CPU fan for my new AMD FX55 CPU. I curretly
have the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu and I am dissapointed in the performance of
the CPU. Last night while running PlanetSide the CPU reached a whoping 60c.

I am wondering if there is a CPU cooler you guys know about that I can
use for the AMS FX55.

Thanks,

because the XP-120 would not fit my Asus without bending caps.

Re: [H] 32bit PCI card in 64 bit slot?

2005-04-21 Thread Tim \"The Beave\" Lider
Harry good Explanation. Although, here is a story.
This is a story of a SuperMicro Board and the tale of 64-bit cards. The
SuperMicro board did run the cards (NIC/RAID controller) but not to the
fullest extent. After moving the Cards to a 32-bit PCI the cards ran
accordingly. Yes, it was a weird situation.

I wish the rule applied to all, but it does not :(
Harry McGregor wrote:
Ok,
Since none of the collective have really given you the true straight up
answer, here it is.
It is NOT the 32bit vs 64Bit that is an issue. The issue is one of
speed and voltage.
PCI v2.2 exists in the following forms (this does not include PCI-X or
PCI-E)
32bit 33MHz 5 Volt (this is the most common standard PCI)
32bit 66MHz 3.3 Volt (not very common slot wise, but a reasonable number
of cards can do it)
64bit 33MHz 5 Volt (A lot of Mac G4 computers used this)
64bit 66Mhz 3.3 Volt (most common server PCI bus, and has been extended
to higher speeds with PCI-X)
Older athlon MP boards used the 64bit 33MHz 5 volt (Tyan Tiger MP),
while newer ones used the 64 bit 66MHz 3.3 Volt (Tyan Tiger MPX).
It's all in the cutting of the card, and the blocks in the slot. If the
card physically fits, it will run (or the designer should be shot).
A 32bit card will run in a 64 bit slot, and 64 bit card will run in a 32
bit slot (I have a number of 3ware cards in 32 bit slots right now).
A lot of cards are 3.3volt and 5 volt tolerant, some are not. The
Digium quad T1 cards are a good example. The TE405P is 5 Volt ONLY, and
the TE410P is 3.3 Volt ONLY. We have a 32bit SCSI card that is 66MHz
and 3.3 volt capable, plugged into a 64Bit 66MHz slot on one server.
PCI is quite nice in that it's hard to screw up physically. The notches
in the card tell you what it can fit into and work with.
Slots come in either 3.3Volt or 5 volt. Cards can be cut to be either
universal or to be specific voltages
A 5 volt only 32bit card will have one notch about 1/2" from the back of
the slot (reverse of the back of the case)
A universal 32bit card will have two notches cut into it.
A universal 64bit card will have three notches cut into it.

A 3.3 volt only 64 bit card will have one notch 1/2" from the back of
the case, and one notch about 1.5" from the back of the cardslot.
A 5 volt only 64 bit card will have two notches separated by about 1/2"
Digium has a good page that shows it:
