[ha-Safran]: Weine cataloging
Hi, Colleagues: I'm having a difficult time deciding where to put a new book, Sacred Treasure the Cairo Genizah, the amazing discoveries of forgotten Jewish History in an Egyptian synagogue attic, by Rabbi Mark Glickman. It could go in many places but using Weine classification, I think I've narrowed it down to maybe 933 archaeology or 962 Egypt. Was stuck in the 200s for awhile but have moved on. Any cataloging opinions out there? Thanks! Thank you to Debbie Stern for reminding everyone about checking the wiki for useful information. The co-administrators of the wiki are now Diane Romm, who originally set it up and added most of the original content, and Tina Weiss. I also encourage everyone to add your own ideas to this growing body of knowledge. Don't forget to toot your horn when you add something (it's easy - just click send notification and others will know about the new material you've put in.) [ha-Safran]: Weine or Elazar for Small Reform Synagogue
I've already replied personally to Michelle Sandler about this, but wanted to remind everyone of the usefulness of the AJL Wiki for these kinds of questions. There's a wonderful page with concise information and very helpful links about cataloging for synagogues and centers at http://ajlwiki.pbworks.com/Cataloging-for-Synagogue-and-Center-Libraries that answers many questions about this topic. The Wiki has lots more useful information. Link to it directly from the AJL home page. If you have great information to add to add to the Wiki, just use the Edit tab on the top of any page to submit permission to do so. Diane Romm and Joyce Levine are our wonderful chairs of this project. It was wonderful seeing so many of you at convention in Seattle and I add my thanks to the very hard-working convention committee that made it such a success! [ha-Safran]: Weine classification documents on the AJL website
I am pleased to announce that the Weine classification scheme documents are now available for free download to AJL members only on the AJL website. Weine is the classification and subject heading scheme developed in the 1960's by our late colleague Mae Weine for primarily small Judaic libraries, under 10,000 volumes. It is used by many AJL members. The documents are in Word format so that individuals may easily modify them to suit their own library's needs. Non-AJL members and others wishing to purchase the print versions may still do so using the AJL Publications order form, also available on the AJL web site at: http://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/publications/publications_order_form.pdfhttp://www.jewishlibraries.org/ajlweb/publications/publications_order_form.pdf In addition to the documents you will find a link on the same page to the Weine Users Discussion Group, hosted by Google. A Weine user's group has also been organized for AJL members. Email Joan Gremont, [EMAIL PROTECTED], for more information. [ha-Safran]: Weine
Dear Safranim: Does anyone know of or have access to a conversion chart created by Rita Frischer which converts Elazar classifications to Weine? It's fairly old... Thanks! [ha-Safran]: Weine question
I received the following question regarding the Weine Classification system. Can someone please answer Leora? Her email address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For this project, all I need to know is how closely Weine parallels Dewey. It's my understanding that she based it on Dewey, but is it just Dewey done Jewish, or has she changed it significanctly more than that? Thank you. [ha-Safran]: Weine Classification
Hello, I am a masters student at the Information School at UW and I have taken on the project of reorganizing the library at the new Hillel facility. Rabbi Dan Bridge gave me a bit of information about the last time the collection was cataloged and also the notebook of the last student who did it. She used the Weine Classification System, with which I am presently unfamiliar. The booklets she had were from 1995 - the 8th edition. Is there a newer addition? I appreciate any assistance you can give me in clarifying this project. Re: [ha-Safran]: Weine Correction
This typographical error in the Relative Index to Weine is a prime example of why one should always follow the instruction found on the opening page of the Directions for the Use of the Relative Index: Never classify solely from the index. The correct number is found in the actual Classification scheme. It is just too easy for this kind of number transposition to occur to totally trust an index. One should always check back in the Scheme itself before assigning a number. [ha-Safran]: Weine Correction
A day school librarian asked me today why Weine classified Mishnah as 323.1. This is obviously wrong so we checked. Mishnah is indeed given a 323.1 number in the Weine Relative Index, 3rd Ed. So change that number to 232.1 and check your shelves in case you made the same mistake my colleague made. Linda R. Silver, Librarian Jewish Education Center of Cleveland 2030 S. Taylor Rd.
