[Hornlist] alphorn dimensions
Does anyone know where I can find the dimensions for making an alphorn, key of F sharp of key of F. The length from the venturi of the mouthpiece to the flare of the bell? The diameter of the bell? The length of the bell? The thickness of the wall or sides of the main yube? Where would I find the working drawings and directions for making? I am thinking of making a standard size alphorn. I understand it takes around 82 hours. I have a completely equiped shop. I have already made a square alphorn 8 feet long. It sounds pretty good, a little on the muffled side, but all of the notes are there. I have been searching for this information but no luck. Thanks for any information. Re: [Hornlist] Horn Parts
I had a simular problem with the third valve slide on the Bb side of my Conn 8D. I purchased it from a pawn shop about fifteen years ago for a song and a dance. Valve slides were sticking, a string was broken, and the cosmetic condition was terrible. At that time I didn't what Conn 8D Constellation was, I just wanted to play a horn. (This was a series L horn.) Needless to say, I spent many hours dissembling slides, rotors, corks, strings, removing corrosion etc. To fix the problem slide I grasped the valve section with one hand and the part of bell showing scrape marks with the other hand and gently pulled and tested. When that didn't work I tried again with more force. I tried several more times, each time gently increasing force until the slide pulled freely. I took a chance and won. If there had been a loose strut or solder I might have cause more damage. My music teacher thought that some school kid had placed a book or too much music in the case. My horn is a fairly used Conn 8D, but I have a problem with the third valve slides. On the F side, the slide has become slightly twisted, and when I go to pull it off to snake it and grease it it rubs against the beginning of the bell (if you don't understand this let me know and I'll get a picture). On the Bb side, the slide is from a completely different horn and doesn't go in all the way (again, I can get a picture, not sure if I'm explaining properly). My question is, should I try to find matching parts, or wait until I have saved enough money for a new horn? -- Tim ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/ youngjim80%40bellsouth.net ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org

[Hornlist] My instrument is full of water
I am glad to see that that little gadget at the low place in the horn is called a water key instead of a spit valve. Spit valves are found on trumpets and trombones. Nobody has mentioned the variation in the amount of water. Obviously, the playing time is one cause. Playing in an air conditioned room will cause more condensation than a heated room. Playing outdoors in the winter time will keep you busy emptying water. I find that playing outdoors in very humid weather will produce more condensation. Back in September 1940, our national guard unit (Thirtieth Infantry Division) was activated into federal service. I was in a regimental band. One of our duties was to play revile parade - AT 0430 hrs. in the morning. We soon resigned ourselves to that duty. All went well until one late December morning we formed up in the street and began playing and marching. Talk about cold! Talk about condensation, it happened. Within a hundred feet the trombones stopped playing. Within fifty feet the trumpets stopped, then the horns stopped then the baritones then bass horns. The band continued down the street to the music of some very out of tune clarinets and the thump of loose drumheads. The colonel heard of our unusual music and not liking it cancelled revile parade. He had learned a lesson that many brass players learned for the first time. That is You can't empty frozen condensate through a water key.
