I was referring to the palomino. I can't find the video link now. I
 must have pressed delete.

He does have long toes, and pads I think - and he's not quite four. Poor
baby. The poor Peruvian in the Feldman video had long toes and weighted
boots too. did you see the comments about him? This one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEXbSiZRm0Ufeature=related One comment was:
it isn't a monster and if you don't know anything about gaiting horses then
be quiet... we all put those bell boots onto the feet because a) sometimes
they walk their shoes off without them b) some need them to gait nicely and
in a good rythm. that is just for training and just look at all of those
icelandic horses they've all got those boots on to so they lift their legs
higher for better results! excuse my english, I'm german

Interesting that the commenter didn't make any denials about the boots being
only for protection. And, really sad that she points out Icelandic's as
the prime example of using boots for action.

[IceHorses] Nanna sweated on our ride today!

2008-03-13 Thread kim shumaker
I took Nanna up the mountain today armed with
thermometer, alcohol soaked cotten pads (for cleaning
the thermometer) and notepad. (I successfully attached
my new Stowaway pack to the saddle, too) I got off
and walked her up the steepest part of the road, like
I did last week and took her temp when I got to the
top. It was 100.5 and it was 99.7 before we left the
house. Nanna was also sweating some, but, still not as
much as the other Icy. I took the other Icy's temp and
it was 100.0. We kept going and the terrain was up and
down and flat, but, not nearly as steep as that first
hill. I took her temp a few more times and the highest
it got was 101.4. She also got more sweaty and was
sweating on her neck and chest. The outdoor temp was
around 70 degrees and sunny. So, I feel very hopeful
that she's going to be alright. I'll continue to
monitor her on our rides and I'm going to hold off
giving her the One AC unless it becomes more apparent
that she needs it. Just wanted to let you guys know
how things were going.

Karen, You gave me alot to think about. I mostly walk
but they walk pretty fast. We leave quarter horses in
the dust at a walk. Which isn't hard. I can feel a
hint of gait in Scooter. I just need to practice
sitting different. I sat a certain way on my MFT and
he gaited. But Scooter is such a good Scout. He is a
momma's boy. I love him.

The first thing to try, though, is to run in
 hand or pony the horse
along side a horse that IS gaiting, on a hard
surface or next to a wall
so the gaiting horse's footfalls can be heard.
 Again, the horse will
often get it from the sound.

I can't run very long because of my knees. And I
don't have a gaited horse to pony off of. Oh well. It
doesn't matter. But after I saw Carla's horse tolt I
wished mine could do that. She said she couldn't get
a tolt out of Dagur. And she knows alot about
Icelandics. She worked with him for a while.

OK, I remember seeing that one, but that horse is no more a Peruvian
than my colt Sol Arabe (http://www.silcom.com/~lkinsky/Arabe/): the
title says its a cross (Paso Peruano x Töltender Traber) -- whatever a
Toltender Traber is. It shows its Peruvian ancestry with the scorpion
tail and might actually gait without all the gimmics. Good looking
horse.

  loosen
(or drop entirely) the reins and let your hands
 rest on the withers or
neck, or even come entirely into half-seat.

Why would I loosen the reins. I thought you were
supposed to have some tention on the reins while
pushing him forward.

They are moving and sweating like crazy while going
nowwhere fast. I don't get it myself.

Glad Nanna is doing better. When I took my boys out
last week they were sweating like pigs. They are
still quite hairy. And it was in the high 70's.
