RE: [IceHorses] Sensation Hybrid treeless saddle
>>> That is funny. I am in love with the trail model Judy let me try. Carla has a cool one that is Western. The western ones are the only ones I haven't tried, but I suspect they would sit a lot like the Hybrids. (Heck, compared to most saddles, I think all of my Sensations feel a good bit alike.) I think I know the saddle you tried - I think it was probably the first Sensation English Trail model I bought. I sold it to Judy when I bought one of the Hybrids. We still have one English Trail model - it's my husband's favorite. I usually ride in the dressage model or in one of the Hybrids, but there's not a LOT of difference in comfort to me. Re: [IceHorses] Sensation Hybrid treeless saddle
I'm new to the group, and looking for a saddle to fit my Icelandic gelding. Any feedback from the group on Sensation treeless saddles? Thanks, Hi Dorothy, and welcome to the list. Was it you who asked about the durability of the Sensations on the treeless list? I got my first one about four years ago I think it was, and they've become our favorites. All of my horses do well in them - doesn't mean that EVERY Icelandic will do well with them, but a lot do. I sold my first couple to upgrade to newer models, but they seem to hold up well. And, they have a neat modular design - you can replace the felt inner panels or the seats independently, should you ever have any wear and you sure can't do that with many saddles. We currently have five - two Hybrids, one dressage and one English trail. I've never met a Sensation that I didn't like. :) Karen Thomas, NC

RE: [IceHorses] sensation hybrid ? for Karen
Hello Karen, Why do you think the hybrid does not work as well on Melnir? Is he built a lot different from your other horses, shorter back?? Renee He's built differently. First, he's smaller, but what I suspect is the bigger issue is that he has pretty laid-back shoulders - not upright, but angled back. He also has a rather long humerus bone, one that is more parallel to the ground as opposed to some of the more show-type Icelandic's. For instance, I'd count Runa as my most "show-type" Icelandic. She has a rather upright shoulder with more sloped angle to her humerus. In other words, Runa has the conformation for nice gait in her rear end, but her front end conformation makes it easy for her to do a true rack, with some "lift and fold" to her front legs. Melnir is more of a long, flat mover - he's built to foxtrot and/or runwalk, although he can saddle rack. All that said, I CAN use a Hybrid on Melnir. It was really the 17" Torsion that didn't work well on him - it "walked back" on him. My particular Hybrids are the extended seat models, so I suspect the shorter, standard seat versions would be fine. My Hybrids will work, with a breastcollar. But, since he's a smaller horse anyway, I just use my standard-seat Sensation dressage model on him - it's more attractive with his smaller proportions and it works like a charm. To put this in perspective, four years ago I would have been VERY happy to have any of these "problems" with Sina. None of these are serious issues, especially compared to what I went through with her, but since I do have options now, I use them. Susan in NV(who's NOT telling hubby I'm considering another saddle!!!) I'm no help there since I've never seen a western model. I've never met a Sensation that I didn't like, but I'd be hard-pressed to like any saddle more than I like my Hybrids. She includes the stirrup tubes with her saddles, but I also add the sheepskin car seat belt covers in the summer for extra cushioning. My fear with the western would be that I might not be able to adjust the fenders short enough for my legs, although Dana can typically customize pretty well. Karen Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED]

>>> What a great idea - I think it will really catch on. Laree I think so...but for the record, I should probably clarify for anyone new on the list. It was only four years ago that I'd get so depressed, afraid that I had my ideal horse in Sina, but that I might not find ANY saddle to work for her. At that time, I probably would have been thrilled to have found ANY saddle that fit, even it had only been available in fuchsia/orange/chartreuse plaid! Now, thanks to treeless saddles, Sensations especially, not only do I have options in which saddles I can put on my horses, but - whoda thunkit - I can actually be picky about something as superficial as COLORS! Ah, how far we've come! This is a luxury I certainly didn't foresee just a few years ago. Many thanks for Judy, Robyn, my good friend and local saddle fitter, and all the folks who were investigating treeless saddles before I got desperate, and many thanks to Dana for her innovation with the Sensation design, and to Kaaren Jordan, for her creativity and good service... :) Karen Thomas, NC -- No virus found in this outgoing message. >>> Then we went out on the trail. She rode her mellower Friesian and I rode a Fjord. I took my hybrid Sensation and tried it on the Fjord. It fit him great and Kim tried it and loved it. Sounds like fun - are these people pretty close to you? I've had three people in the past week take their first ride on an Icelandic horse here. I had my Sensation Hybrid on the horse for them. Everyone of them loved the horse I put them on, and loved the saddle. The first lady actually said, "I can't tell if I just love this horse, or if I love the saddle, or if I love them both." She likes color too and when I told her she could get the saddle in different colors or just have the seat in different colors, she was sold. I thought it would be cool with my chocolate and black saddle to have a purple seat and a turquoise seat to interchange! I think it's a great idea too - I think it was Kaaren Jordan who actually came up with this idea of making the seat, stirrup leather tubes, and grab strap tubes, so that you don't have to have any "color" on the basic saddle, but still have a good dash of color. So, if you get sick of a particular color, or if you want to use the saddle on a horse on a horse of a different color, you aren't stuck. Karen Thomas, NC -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Sounds like a cool idea! I went riding yesterday with a lady I met on the Fjord group. First we rode her Friesians in the coverall arena. I've never ridden a Friesian-man do they have a huge trot! I had to refresh my posting skills. It felt so weird compared to riding my little ponies. I didn't think they were that comfortable a ride, but boy are they beautiful. Then we went out on the trail. She rode her mellower Friesian and I rode a Fjord. I took my hybrid Sensation and tried it on the Fjord. It fit him great and Kim tried it and loved it. Hi Raven, >yes...when you use the hard use set-up there is a gap in the stirrups >nylons. i myself feel this is a hazard. That is what I thought when I first saw it - I was trying to Velcro the straps together but then it makes the hard use really restrictive. I talked to Dana about it and she has never had or heard of a problem and once your feet are in the stirrups I don't think it would be a problem. I ride some saddles with the free swing attachment and others the hard use - I like it both ways and think it is a matter of personal preference and just trying new things. I should know better than to take the laptop to bed and post when I can't sleep. ;) Way back when I was a dealer for an endurance tack company what I was told is that you needed the plastic pipe (the ones I have left are 1/2" inside diameter) to protect the stirrup leathers. The plastic pipe I have is identical to what came on the 'old' EZ Rides, that way I could change the sizes for people if they wanted me to. Something about the leathers being stressed too much if they rest on just the bolt, that it has to be covered. I doubt if you or I would have a problem with it since we're both small, but it's always been my opinion that EZ Rides were designed for a giant. Steph -- "Brutality begins where skill ends." RE: [IceHorses] Sensation Hybrid
I've also just cut the loop off the end of the webbers, threaded that through the stirrup ring on the saddle and put a hole in the webbers on each side of the stirrup ring and attached the webbers to a large conway buckle. That way you don't run out of holes if you need to make the stirrups really short. Oh no, we're not back to Conway buckles! That was the whole reason I changed to Webbers to start with. Dana's original stirrups all depended on Conway buckles (so did the Freeform saddle stirrup leathers) and for those of us who share saddles with other people, that is a real PITA! I probably never would have tried the Webbers to begin with had it not been for Conway buckles. :) Karen Thomas, NC, hoping Mr. Conway has been severely punished for his horrible little invention! RE: [IceHorses] Sensation Hybrid
You should use the grey high pressure outdoor PVC pipe, the other stuff isn't strong enough and could shatter or break. I don't think I see your point here...? The plastic piping is well under $1 per foot (maybe under $.50 - can't remember) and it only took an inch per stirrup. (Two inches if you use the wider, western-neck stirrups - but I don't think the Sensations can use western stirrups.) It's simply a cover over the bolt - it's not even needed. If it breaks I'll splurge another $.04 and replace it. The bolt was, and still is, what carries the burden structurally. I've been using one for over a year, and it's still fine. And, btw, I don't think you can find any PVC pipe that is small enough on the OD, yet big enough on the ID to go over the bolt. And if you did, it wouldn't have any "springiness" of the softer tubing. That's the only reason I tried the tubing - the bolt alone should have been fine. Canadian Trail House sells replacement tops for the EZ Rides. She sold them so you could have one set of EZ Rides and use them for different sized leathers. And none of the tops work with Webbers, unless you take the rubber cover off and just use the bolt - which was the reason I posted this, so people can use Webbers if they prefer. Regular stirrups work just fine though, without any modifications. Karen Thomas, NC -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. I believe I still have 6 or 8 sets of replacement tops that I could bring when we ever get together. I don't think the pipe breaking is going to cause a fall or anything like that since the bolt will hold, but it could potentially injure the horse. RE: [IceHorses] Sensation Hybrid
>>>Did you mean in your last statement that you use Webbers or regular leathers? Or did you mean regular stirrups as in iron stirrups? Sorry I wasn't clear. I use EZ-ride type stirrups on all my saddles now, with either Webbers or regular stirrups leathers. When the Sensation leathers are replaced with Webbers or "normal" leathers, do I just loop them around the top of the EZ Rides? I remember you saying something about having to unscrew the bolts on the EZ Rides to put regular leathers on? Webbers are made to slide onto a safety stirrup bar on a treed saddle. The Sensations (and about all the treeless saddles) have a closed ring, instead of a bar, so you can't slide the Webbers on. So, what you can do instead is turn the Webbers upside down if you use the EZ rides. Unbolt the top of the EZ rides, and slide he Webber loop that normally slides onto the stirrup bar through the bolt and replace the bolt. Then, slide the top part of the webber that has the t-buckle through the stirrup loop on the saddle. I've been riding in Sensations with my Webbers upside-down for over a year. The newer EZ-rides have a fat slightly springy cover over the bolt that is supposed to add still more shock absorption. The loop of the Webber won't fit over that. What I tried this last time is sliding the bolt through a piece of 1/2" (I think that's the size) plastic tubing (like they sell for fish tank pumps - they carry it at Lowe's). The plastic tubing will fit through the loop in the Webbers. This isn't necessary if you use normal stirrup leathers. If you want a cheap but effective thing to hold the extra piece of the regular stirrup leathers (not Webbers) so that they don't flop in the breeze, you can use a short piece of the Velcro One-Wrap. I love that stuff - I get that at Lowe's too. (I'm sure Home Depot carries it too.) Gee...I've been making saddle pad covers. Now I'm giving helpful hints on stirrup riggings.
