[JAWS-Users] Folder List View and Folder Details View and Outlook Question
Dear List: I have windows ten and have started to use Jaws. First, within folders, how do I change the view to either list view or detail view? Second, sometimes, not always, when composing a message in Outlook 2016, if I want to review the message, the main arrow keys do not speak what I just wrote. Thanks for any thoughts on these questions. Regards: Ted Larson For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Hi, Adrian, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio. I've been quite successful with update issue resolution as well as solving other internet issues by downloading a program called complete internet repair and it's quite accessible with jaws. It's certainly worth checking out. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. I'm also using windows 7 right now. I'll eventually be upgrading to windows ten but will probably end up getting a new laptop as my experience at work with windows ten has shown me that there's far less problems with the caviat that I'm having to use a proprietary version of windows ten developed for the Department of Defense. I've just found that there isn't enough attention paid to sound and video drivers when the department of defense just upgrades machines from windows 7 to windows ten. That's my $0.02 worth, grin! My windows 7 lapotp here is an HP Zbook z17 which is a business laptop but I'm far more able to do driver updates successfully with Dell as once you have your dell service tag you can then just go to support.dell.com and put in your service tag and the operating system you're using and get any drivers you need. The HP support application s somewhat useable but not nearly as user friendly as Dell. The first time Windows update failed to install, I had to hire someone who knew what he was doing to manually install the update. I'd first contacted MS Accessibility. After an hour, they gave up and escalated. However, I didn't get any follow-up until this past Sunday, more than a month later. By then, the initial failure had been resolved. However, it's just happened again. I haven't decided what to do. In the past, MS Accessibility was going to solve another problem by reinstalling windows, which seemed to me much to dramatic. In that case, too, I turned instead to an expert who made the fix without trauma to my system, although some to my bank account. I wish I had more confidence in MS Accessibility. For certain relatively minor things, I'm guessing they're fine, but for anything complex, you really need to monitor what they're up to. In addition, letting a month elapse before acting on an escalated matter, especially when security is involved, was unconscionable. The short answer is that I have no idea how to solve this recurring Windows update failure by myself. I think the web addresses are the same. Neither opens directly for me from the email, but both work when copied and pasted into the browser, Chrome, in my case. I'd copied the address from the website and pasted it into my message. It did not stay nicely on one line, as Adrian's did. Perhaps the improvement of Outlook 2016 over my 2010? LOL. But if looked at letter by letter, so to speak, they're both the same. But choose the neater version! Ah yes. I forgot about the differences with the spell-check. It's minor but threw me off at first. Now it doesn't really matter I suppose, particularly with regards to this list and its topics, but the "we" (not just in Office, but Windows as well) always bugs me. Who the hell's "we" then? The reason that Word now says "we" is to make the language (a) more readable for people with lower IQs and those who are less technologically literate, and (b) to make Word seem more "friendly", a trend that has taken hold with technology recently. I personally like it as it makes Word seem tailored more for individual users. On 2/28/18, Adrian Sprattwrote: > Hi, Rebecca. I've been using Office 2016 for only two weeks. Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 vs. 2016 vs. 365
The reason for the spell-check not working as it used to is that, rather than spell-check appearing as a dialog box on top of the regular Word window, it now appears in a pane on the right-hand side of the screen, just like for some other Word features. Fernando, thanks also from me for your thoughts here. Helpful information. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fernando Gregoire Sent: Wednesday, February 28, 2018 2:46 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 vs. 2016 vs. 365 Hi Reveca, I use Office 2016 on all of my computers. Ultimately Microsoft is making a lot of accessibility improvements and even step-by-step tutorials on how to accomplish specific tasks by using a screen reader that are based in Office 2016 programs running together with JAWS or the Windows 10 Narrator. Besides accessibility, it only makes sense to upgrade to Office 2016 if you often work with files stored in cloud services like OneDrive and/or need to edit or copy data from PDF files to Word documents and, although it is less common from witting Word, if you use Word to read books, because Office 2013 introduced the capability to resume reading from where you left. I personally found upgrading useful, because the support for saving files to OneDrive from witting Office programs and have recently used documents synchronized is drastically enhanced over the limited and unstable support available for this in Office 2010. If you use Outlook as your e-mail client, it is easier to attach recently used files of any type without having to search in the folder structure, since Outlook 2016 by defaults shows a list of the last files used, which in Windows 10 is consistent with the Quick Access folder in File Explorer. Of course there are more specific things you may find useful or not depending on programs you use and the purposes you use these for, but I think the ones I mentioned are the most notable additions regarding daily use for a home user. Not that we're speaking about Office 2016, how well does the new Word feature that provides writing suggestions besides traditional spelling and grammar that was introduced some time ago in Office 365 works? It is not available for Spanish yet and I'm not a native English speaker, so I can't accurately judge suggestions quality myself. Hope it helps! -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Rebecca Lineberger Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2018 7:08 PM To: jaws user's listSubject: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 vs. 2016 vs. 365 I'm running Windows 10, Fall Creator update, 1709. I've been reading a bit about 2016 and 365 from books on each downloaded from Bookshare. Does anyone have any thoughts about either? It seems these days that screen readers are always playing catch-up as Microsoft constantly introduces changes. Since my computer is behaving and I don't need a new one, the upgrade to a later version of Office would be a choice and not a necessity. Just wondering about others' experiences. Thoughts would be appreciated. [JAWS-Users] Office Versions
Thank you to all those who responded with their thoughts and experiences. In an ideal world, there would be a way to use a new program for long enough to really learn and assess it, and then be able to revert back to the older version if the new one did not suit. Perhaps if there are screen reader issues, they could be reported to FS and they could be addressed. Sometimes small annoyances can be a deal-breaker for using or not using a program. I too use the f8 for quick selection. In Word 2010, JAWS does a great job. In 2010 too, the spell-checker with f7 works really well, speaking everything. Insert-f7 repeats the information; insert-c reads the context and alt-c corrects the spelling (when I remember to press it instead of enter). LOL. To me, enter seems more intuitive to confirm a choice, and alt-i makes more logical sense to ignore. Smile. With Window-Eyes, I used alt-f7, which I sometimes do with JAWS as well. I do use Window-Eyes still in Word for playing Sudoku. The table mode works really well, giving only column and row numbers without trying to read headings. This lets me know instantly where I am when trying to figure out what number would go where. I don't know if Window-Eyes works with Word 2016, and I've not found a way to make tables work well for me with JAWS for Sudoku. There are always gains and losses when updating technology, for us, doubly so, since the screen has to be mediated, and screen readers do the best they can. Perhaps all the tech wizards everywhere could try turning off their monitors and do their testing with a screen reader.? Smile. Thanks again for all the thoughts.
