Hi Kevin/all,Thanks for the reply. Sadly I don't seem to have received a zipped
attachment recently, though I received the edge tutorial's page ages ago.
Anyway, if there were an attachment, maybe, a list member might forward it
again. Otherwise I shall look for it on the web, as I have bookmarked the
relevant page.

This is a tutorial originally written by David More on how to use Edge with
NVDA and Narrator, I just modified it to include usage with jaws. I tested it
and it works according to the tutorial. This is a second post of it because I
didn’t do it correctly the first time!

Afternoon all.

I just downloaded several zipped files for braille lessons. However, when I
went to the context menu i.e. Shift F10, there was no option for unzipping the
file. I am using JAWS 2018 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop. Any
thoughts/ideas/suggestions will be deeply appreciated.

turn off the automatic notification of web page positions in Microsoft Edge
with the following steps.

1. Open the Microsoft Edge browser.
2. Press Insert+6, (the 6 on the alphabetic keypad’s number row), to open
the “JAWS Settings Center”.
3. Press the down arrow, and then press the letter “s” to go to the Speech
Verbosity tree view item, and press the right arrow to open it.
4. Press the down arrow once, and note which verbosity level you are
using.
5. Press the down arrow again to “Configure Verbosity Levels”, and press
the right arrow to open it.
6. Press the down arrow until you reach the verbosity level you are using
and press the Spacebar to open the “Preferences” dialog box.
7. Press the down arrow until you reach the “Position Information”
setting, press the Spacebar to uncheck it, and press Enter to close the dialog
box.
8. Press the Enter key again to save the setting and close the “Setting

I still had a 52.X ESR installer on my system. SO I just uninstalled V60,
ran the 52.X installer and updated to the most current one capable with the
older version and am now am on Firefox Version 52.8.0. The same one I was on
before trying the Quantum or whatever it's called.
The other issue I was having with Firefox 60 and Jaws on The Old Reader:
This is what I sent VFO:
I am noticing with the latest Firefox 60 (ESR and standard version) when
browsing down my list of RSS posts. Be it in a particular feed’s entries, a
folder created by me or even in the all posts view, when I click enter or
press the spacebar to expand that particular entry to show the summary (this
is in list view. Not full view) and then later wish to do the same for
another RSS entry, Jaws doesn’t appear to be able to accomplish this second
task.
I’ve tried using the Jaws cursor, maximizing the window and then pressing
enter or spacebar, tabbing to be sure Jaws focus isn’t somewhere else, but
nothing seems to work. It’s basically pick one RSS entry and that’s it. The
only thing I can do to be able to select another RSS entry to view is do an
entire page refresh. Which isn’t a solution as once the refresh occurs, all
previously unread posts are marked as read.
In my case, The Older Reader is marked as my home page and I refer to it all
the time. So this one bug is proving to be quite disruptive. I don’t know if
it has something to do with a virtual buffer focus or some other element,
but I am not able to figure it out on my end. To be clear, this particular
behavior is not present in prior versions of Firefox. I have been using the
V 52.x ESR version before upgrading to v60 without this issue present.
So anyway, in the same email response I pasted below, I got this note from
the same tech:
Also, I did see your other e-mail in which you mentioned a specific Web
site. I did look at that Web site, but I found that it requires signing up
for an account to see the issues. If you could provide us with a site with
these issues that does not require signing up for an account, that would be
very helpful.

Ok... but as I specifically mentioned this website, it kind of defeats the
purpose...
Again, probably one of those things I'd have to call in to better
demonstrate the exact problem, but I'm busy throughout the day and always on
the phone, doubt I'd be able to do it any time soon.
This is why I figured in part to just go back to V 52 and maybe wait for
another Jaws or Firefox release with hopefully some more improvements. I've
waited a few months, what's a couple of more weeks...
As long as you don't mess with your profile on your system, then
uninstalling and reinstalling any version of Firefox shouldn't be a big
deal. That said, standard caveats of backing up and all that apply. Also, I
do have a Firefox account for easier b

Hi Kevin,

You need to have the error reporting feature turned on. Below are the steps
to get to the settings for this.

Try the following:

1. Open the Settings Center with the keystroke, Insert / Jaws Key + 6, on
the number row, now press, Control, Shift, + D, to open the Settings Center
default all applications.

2. Now arrow down to, Miscellaneous Closed, it's #24 of 25, & right arrow to
open.

3. Arrow down to, Error Reporting, it's #13 of 13. Use the spacebar to
toggle through the 3 settings. The 3 settings are
1. Ask me if I want to send error reports to Freedom Scientific each time.
This is the default.
2. Always send error reports to Freedom Scientific.
3. Never send error reports to Freedom Scientific.

4. If you make a change tab to, Okay, press enter to save your change &

the one which is never to be updated?
or are you talking about the windows mail app, with windows 10.
if it's the windows live mail,
the autofill will never work, because there's no jaws scripting, so, even
the NVDA doesn't autofill.
if your talking about the windows 10 mail app, again there's no jaws

To be honest I don't use any keystrokes for controlling volume. I run 2

sound override problems. I should have tested the steps I posted, but
assuming they would work correctly if assigned was a poor assumption from
what Net bat states. On second thought, when I get some time I'll play
around since Net bat is running Widows 10, and I'm running Widows 7, to see

Hi net bat66 and Mike,

Does this procedure works when using Eloquence? In current JAWS versions
there is no Volume slider when setting a voice profile with Eloquence,
unlike with other synths like SAPI 5 or any Vocalizer variant.
As I remember from older JAWS versions, this control when using Eloquence
was simply a read-only edit box which said “Use your system's volume.”

Hi Fernando,

To be honest I don't use any keystrokes for controlling volume. I run 2
soundcards, 1 for system sounds & 1 for Jaws. This way I don't run into
sound override problems. I should have tested the steps I posted, but
assuming they would work correctly if assigned was a poor assumption from
what Net bat states. On second thought, when I get some time I'll play
around since Net bat is running Widows 10, and I'm running Widows 7, to see
if volume keystroke assignment might work differently with Widows 7.

Thanks in advance!

forwarded from mike bee on the main jaws list.
1. Open Keyboard Manager without any applications / programs open to make
sure you land on, Default, when you open Keyboard Manager. Do this by
pressing, Jaws key + F2, press the letter, K, until you have Keyboard
Manager highlighted, & press enter. If you don't have, Default, highlighted
when opening the keyboard manager press the letter, D, until you do.

2. Find the following to assign keystrokes to them:
DecreaseVoiceVolume, None
Decrease system volume, None
IncreaseVoiceVolume, None
Increase system Volume, None
*Note: None, means that there is not a keystroke assigned to these
functions
/ tasks.

3. On each of these functions / tasks press, Control + h, to open an edit
field to insert the keystroke you would like to use for this particular
function / task. *Note: Make sure not to press any other keys other than
the keystroke you want!
4. After entering your desired keystroke tab one time, and there's a
checkbox for assigning this keystroke to desktop keys only, usually people
will uncheck this.

5. Tab to, Okay, Press ENTER, and choose OK in the confirmation dialog which
appears.

6. You'll be returned to the list view of scripts. Use the same steps with
the other functions / tasks listed above.

7. Close Keyboard Manager with, Alt + F4.

We used to have three site options for Amazon: The main site, a really

been taken away now. I think it's patronizing to automatically be sent to a

prefer the supposedly more accessible sites, but others not. And we as
users should be in control of which to use. Smile. JMO.

I went back to Amazon this morning. My friend had gone all down the Your

no Account Options.
She'd also had JAWS, as did I last night, search for the word Options.
JAWS said it was not there.
This morning, after having read several List responses, I had JAWS search
for the word Payment, And again, that was not there.
My friend does not have
Amazon Prime.
Nor do I.
There was a link for managing one's Prime Account, but this brought me no
joy as a roundabout way of getting to Account or Payment Options Since I was
told immediately that I did not have Amazon Prime.
Here is what I see when I go to the

Several people said they could reach the Payment Options Link using IE11,
JAWS 2010 and Windows 10. This is what my friend is using.
But to test, this morning, I loaded IE11 and went back to Amazon. For me,
it made no difference. I got the same page with the information copied
above.
I've gone to Amazon from the link on my desktop, as well as from a Google
search, just in case that made a difference. It doesn't..
I wonder why some can access this and others of us cannot.
Since email addresses change, and the expiration numbers on credit cards
change every couple of years, or shipping addresses may change, we need
access to the account information page.
Admittedly it's got to be frustrating if results can differ, even when the
operating system, browser and screen reader version are the same, but this
is why I put this out on the JAWS Users' List to see if the problem my
friend and I are having could be replicated.
Thanks to those who responded, but if anyone is having similar issues, I'd
like to know, and Amazon needs to be alerted so that they know how
widespread the problem is.

I have revised the instructions to make them a bit more thorough and
complete. Note that these instructions will work with IE. They may or may
not work with other browsers that do not already support the extension
version of Rumola, but the specifics will vary.
1. Go to the main Rumola website here,
http://skipinput.com/
2. Highlight the link labeled
.. RUMOLA
with the Tab key (not the Arrow keys). It is important to use the Tab key
since the Arrow keys may or may not properly highlight the link.
3. Note that pressing Enter on the link before this next step may possibly
make it more effective, but it is not strictly necessary. In either case,
after you have highlighted the link with the Tab key and possibly pressed
Enter, press the Applications key and choose
"Add to favorites..."
from the context menu.
4. In the
"Create in"
combo box, select
"Favorites Bar"

Hi,
I've been looking for Rumola for Internet Explorer, and I haven't found it.
I installed the add-on for Chrome, but IE is my main browser.
Thank you if anyone can send me a link for it if it is up-to-date for IE.
FYI, Rumola is a captcha solver, for those web pages that ask us to enter
the letters in the window.
Even if they were legible, they aren't accessible.
There are times I'd pay a couple bucks to have someone read the captcha for
me.
Looks like it's available for FF, but I'm not ready to go back to FF yet.

Hi Kevin,

Hi Sandy,

Jaws has 3 modes of operation. Beginner, Intermediate, & Advanced. The
higher the level you select to run, the less Jaws will speak as you use the
program, & this means all across the board. So, if you're running Beginner
you will hear much more of Jaws as you do your work, email, web serfing,
etc...

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 vs. 2016 vs. 365

2018-02-27 Thread Kevin Lee
Really Microsoft didn’t add much features in 2016 the 365 just can be a
subscription software.
The only changes are security stuff. You could actually use 2003 and it
wouldn’t make much difference. The only major move was office 2001from the
standard menus to office 2003 ribbon menus.

I'm running Windows 10, Fall Creator update, 1709. But I'm still using
Office 2010. I hesitate to update since on the list at least, and probably
naturally enough, I see more problems than benefits. I've been reading a
bit about 2016 and 365 from books on each downloaded from Bookshare. Does
anyone have any thoughts about either? It seems these days that screen
readers are always playing catch-up as Microsoft constantly introduces
changes. Since my computer is behaving and I don't need a new one, the
upgrade to a later version of Office would be a choice and not a necessity.

Just wondering about others' experiences.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello all!
I installed the new JAWS 2018 update on both of my laptops, and many issues in
windows 10 are fixed.
The mail app is almost working perfectly.
I get no repeats of words, and the new message I bring up reads right away.
JAWS works great now, in the One note app. Also, in Edge, JAWS can now list the
form fields, headings, and links. That helps a lot with Edge. You still cannot
select text with the virtual PC cursor in Edge.
JAWS 2018, with this update, works very well in the Windows Defender security
center window. It is very snappy and it reads the information concerning the
scan. I have noticed that action center works much better with JAWS as well,
with this update.
If you have any questions, please ask.
Yes, I almost forgot.
JAWS now works the best in Google Docs in Google Chrome browser. You do not
need to use Firefox anymore to use Google Docs, sheets, and so on.
Google Drive and docs are very snappy with this new update.
Have a great one!

Hello Inamuddin, I was hopeful that the latest 2018 update would solve the
Windows Mail troubles as well but was disappointed in the results as noted by
you and others.
With little to lose, I did a repair on this new version earlier today. The
repair took about 4 times longer than the initial successful install but since
doing this, the Windows 10 Mail program is almost working properly. On
occasion I have to unload and reload both JAWS and Windows Mail and, for some
reason, that seems to restore proper behavior on this Dell Desktop of recent
manufacture.
I would be interested if others with Windows 10 Mail issues find a repair of
the latest update results in improvement. Thanks, Mitch

Perhaps you can do a search for Destenno games. They were originally written
for DOS but were ported to Windows. The suite includes a great blackjack
game as well as craps, a slot machine, and a few other games.

What I did was run CCleaner while the message is still player, when you run

When I've received those, it is a browser pop-up window.

I shut down the computer and ran several scans with different anti-virus
programs, and it never detected anything.

I think it is a phishing scam to try to get you to call their number for

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 2018 losing virtual cursor position in virtual

I've noticed that if I load a document into the virtual viewer (e.g., from
Adobe Reader or OCR results), then switch to another application (e.g.,
Microsoft Word), write some text, and finally switch with Alt+Tab back to
the virtual viewer, the virtual cursor is placed at the start of the
document rather than at the point where it was before. Editing/reading text
in another application seems to result in loss of the virtual cursor
position in the virtual viewer. This is more than mildly inconvenient when
trying to take notes from a document, for example.

Have others seen this, and is there a known solution?

I'm running JAWS 2018 1712.10 under Windows 10 1709 with the latest
Microsoft updates applied.

Hi Kevin,

I am not sure if this will transfer your settings or not, but it will move
all of your accounts and messages, as well as any calendars and the like
that you might have. To do this you need to have the app data folder showing
in your Users folder, the one named Kevin or whatever. open the Kevin
folder, then App Data, now select and open Local, and do the same fowith the
Microsoft folder. Now, scroll down and find the folder labeled Windows Live
Mail, and either copy the entire folder, or open it and copy all of the
contents from it, and paste this onto a flash drive or an external hard
drive or something. When you get WLM set up on your new computer, just cop y
any single files into the same folder on the new computer, and for any file
folders that you copied, just copy the contents of these folders into the
corresponding folders on the new computer, The folder names may vary
slightly from one computer to the other, but they will be similar enough
that you will be able to relate one to the other.

AS for how your messages are displayed, you can always go into the View tab
on the ribbon, and see how everything is set and make notes on this to be
able to set the new computer up the same way.

[JAWS-Users] setting user as Administrator

2015-07-23 Thread kevin lee
I fixed the problem of no system sounds on my desktop by just creating a new
profile, but now I don’t have administrator rights. how can I set a user as
the admin? when I’m using the profile with system sounds and I go into manage
users all I see is standard user radio button checked and cancel.when I go to
manage all users all that’s displayed is the profile with the system sounds and
guest the profile without system sounds is not shown! I want to delete the
existing profile which is the admin and make the one with sound the admin. is
this possible to do without sighted help?

[JAWS-Users] third party antivirus

2015-07-23 Thread Kevin Lee
I’m still alittle unsure, but after upgrading to windows 10 will a third party
antivirus be needed?
I did read somewhere since windows 8.1 windows has covered the spyware problem
would that be true in win 10
or will a third party antivirus be needed for email and internet protection?

I believe you need to install the java access bridge to access the java
console. The access bridge is included in the latest version of java but it
needs to be turned on. I have not done this myself for a long time and I do
not recall all the details. You can google it or maybe some one on the list

You are supposed to be able to go the control panel in Windows 7/8 and then
to java and security where you can add a trusted site.
Unfortunately, when I go in to the JAVA control panel, JAWS won't read
anything, is there any way to get around this?
I have tried searching on the web and creating an exception.site file in

Hi folks,
could someone please give me an assist on how to edit contact info, or more
specifically, an email address in WLM?

Here is what I’ve tried and it has been to no abail..
I’ve gone to contact list with control+3 and the list came up.
I’ve arrowed to the name of the person I need to edit and hit enter.
It then just says, “edit contact” and repeats the persons name.
I cannot edit the info here.
No matter if I arrow, or tab, I only hear the same list of items such as,
summary tab, contact tab, personal tab, and so on. I tried to hit enter on
these fields and nothing happens.

I am using JAWS16, Win7, WLM 15.4.3

What steps might I be missing?
Any suggestions?
Thanks

hi,

you do realise since win8 you no longer require third party av.
microsoft have re-designed the built in security from start to end. for
example, enabling enhanced protection mode in internet explorer creates a
sandbox around the os. many articles have tested this statement and explain
that the core intergrated security is more powerful and effective in av
protection than the third party counter parts.when you install third party
av these disable the built in security features.

i have been running win8 for over 2years without third party av and touch
wood no viruses and windows is running much faster and quiter.

the biggest hurdle the average user has to overcome is the notion that
having no third party av does not mean your pc is more vulnerable to
attacks. microsofts intergrated security provides protection in the
background, heck they don’t even place the defender icon in the system tray
anymore.

I have a phone can't get rid of it without dumping my internet, and I have a
cell phone, however, I dislike trying to get customer service to do
anything. I watch my cousin and her husband grab a phone call and spend
more than 30 minutes just getting directed to the correct person, I could do
a lot of things in that same period of time, read a book, clean, walk, write
20 or more e-mail, shop and buy on the internet. It absolutely annoys me to
listen to someone telling the same story to five different people listen to
that horrid stuff they call music and it isn't in my book, and then maybe
get your issue solved to your satisfaction. I avoid it whenever possible
and sit here tense and ready to toss anything at anything else when I must
do it. Due to a hearing problem, hard to listen to something else while
waiting. I feel like I am wasting time, even though I am now no longer
working, and can waste time, I dislike doing it on something I dislike so
much.
Friends may call me, I may talk for hours on the phone, not all that often,
but, I hate customer service phone calls. My time is as valuable as
theirs.

Sorry, this is definitely a hot button for me. I have had to make some of
these calls since my husband passed last year to change utilities to my name
... and I usually end up angry or depressed after I have had to sit for
hours and, some phone conversations have lasted more than an hour and a half
trying to accomplish something that should have taken no more than 15
minutes. People tell me it is the way it is, but it does not make me like
it.

and customer service chat is not good because chat crashes my computer.
they promptly refunded my payment so they are good about returns, maybe
they'll email you a return form along with a post paid mail label you can
print out!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] trying to return an item to Amazon

I got an item from Amazon which is defective. I want to return it. I got on
the site, looked up my order, went to the return portion. It asked Why are
you returning this? Then it said there is a pop-up menu. I cannot get Jaws
to read the menu; thus, I cannot fill out the form. Any suggestions would be
welcome. Thank you.

I use windows 7 with jaws sixteen and IE 10. So, I keep getting this
message, Notification bar requires response. Press alt N. What is this
trying to tell me? When I press alt N I don't seem to get any choices
except to close.

[JAWS-Users] sophos virus removal tool

2015-07-16 Thread Kevin Lee
I tested this out I guess it’s good, it found no threats on my computer don’t
know if I had any. just wanted to take this piece of software for a spin.
it’s best used with the jaws cursor but you may need to flip flop to the
virtual pc cursor at times.
it’s best uninstalled with Revo
when uninstalling with revo you need to force uninstall. after I uninstalled
it , the start menu shortcut was left behind that can be deleted manually.

Gary Ray here.

I went to the page and looked this over.

My question is whether or not this works on 64 bit systems. The stuff on
the page sorta leads me to believe it is only for 32 bit systems.

Help me understand.

Thanx!

Hi. My Vipre apparently ran out. I will deal with them early Monday
morning. Now, my problem is to know if I still need to be sure to try to
keep the 2014 or if the 2015 has been made JAWS friendly by now? I am not
extremely savvy when it comes to using and configuring antivirus programs.
Should I be getting the whole antispyware suite or just the anti-virus for
best results? I need the best protection possible.

It seems to me that Vipre Tech Support should be able to make sure all is
configured okay. Any advice or suggestions about this adventure would be
greatly appreciated.

Hi Kevin,

You need to tab passed several tabs you will hear, Search Box edit, then
the, Turn Windows Firewall on or off link, will be about 4 tabs. Or, after
pressing enter on the, Windows Firewall link, shift + tab, around 7 times,
you will find it. Whatever the case might be the, Turn Windows Firewall on
or off link, is there just keep tabbing. I'm running Windows 7 Pro so, if
you're running a different OS I can't say how your OS will display the
options.
Take care.

[JAWS-Users] windows security center cannot be started

2015-07-09 Thread Kevin Lee
I think I got hit with a virus, it first started by zapping my jaws 16jaws
could not start the icon was on the desktop.. I had to reinstall jaws 15 and
then I ran a vipre virus scan.
all seemed well except my windows security center won’t turn on. vipre doesn’t
even show in the action center. defender doesn’t show either.
I went to my windows update and executed it and jaws announced updates cannot
be run. do I need to reinstall, I have a healthy system image on a removable
harddrive. but isn’t the restore process unaccessible to jaws users.?

restore is accessible but I already tried that to restore to yesterday,
but the restore failed. I was talking about a system image. windows
doesn't recognize the system image as a restore point I think you must
restore an image in safe mode
the techs do not recommend modifying the regerstry for safe mode to use
sound so I'm guessing it’s a no go for jaws users.

available restores it requires the use of JAWS cursor, but been a while
