KR> Airventure Cup Race, OSH
NetHeads, Just an FYI, Jeff Lang has talked me into running the Airventure Cup again this year, probably to give himself some competition in the Sportsman category. The race starts at 10AM Sunday morning from Dayton's Wright Brothers Field, and ends near Fond du Lac. We'll be flying into OSH as a "mass arrival" Sunday afternoon, and my plane should end up parked in the "Racer's Square". Maybe this will get us a little recognition for the KRs and Corvair powered homebuilts, but if nothing else, it's good clean (although expensive) fun. My wife told me with a smile, "don't come home if you don't win", but what else could I expect from her? I hope to see many of you at the KR forum Monday afternoon at the usual time, 1:00 to 2:15 in Pavilion 2 (the GAMA Pavilion) in the Forum area. I'm out of here shortly... OK, it looks like my fuel tank is sealed up and doesn't leak, and the wings should go back on the plane late this weekend, so I should be able to make the Airventure Cup race. I was on the fence about this and my wife finally said "you only live once, you'll love it", so I'm in. At least Jeff Lange will have somebody to race in the Sportsman class this year. Judging by his previous speeds, it will be close! So for those folks who volunteered to help defray costs, you are welcome to throw it in my Paypal account (account name n5...@hiwaay.net ), or email me for my home address if you want to mail a check. It cost $275 to enter, and the fuel for the race alone will be another $75 or so. There's no pressure, and I don't expect anybody in particular to contribute, but if you'd like to, I won't turn it down. Thanks, Mark Langford n5...@hiwaay.net website www.n56ml.com

Mark, If you have Falcon insurance (Global), getting the waiver is easy. I emailed my broker and had it in my inbox the next day. If you are up for it, you could camp at the airport and save a few bucks. I usually fly out on Saturday, but this year I am going to go out on Thursday. Friday is when the public starts checking things out. Saturday is the mini airshow. It has the feel of a KR gathering, nice and relaxed. You can fly at any time and there is always something in the air (usually going really fast). Let me know if you have any questions. Mark, you are correct. Its one night of hotel ($80) and about 17 gallons of fuel for the race. Since I hanger in OSH anyway, I fly the course in reverse every year so that is another 17. I would like to see a KR in the AirVenture Cup Race this year. I think Mark Langford?s KR would be a good example to represent the KR group. I would like to kick in to help pay the $250.00 entry fee if we get entered before June 14th then $275. Is there anyone else in the group that would like to join in? We might check with the Corviar group to see if anyone there would like to join in. John Backer

For those of you that are interested in having a great time and putting your airplane to the test. The entry fee includes: -Dinner the night before the race in Dayton -Participation in the race -Mass arrival into Oshkosh (you don't have to fly the Ripon approach!) -WEEKLY AIRVENTURE PASS -After hours party Press Release AirVenture Cup Race Returns to Dayton For 2009 The 12th running of the AirVenture Cup Race is planned for Sunday, July 26, as nine classes of amateur-built category take off from Wright Brothers Airport (MGY) in Dayton, Ohio, in a beat-the-clock dash to AirVenture Oshkosh. Race Chairman Eric Whyte, EAA 357260, explained that the race began alternating between Mitchell, South Dakota and Dayton last year. "That mixes things up from year to year for the pilots," he said. "We were very well received in Mitchell, and plan to start from there in even years, and from Dayton during the odd years." Founded in 1998, the race is open to all private pilots of aircraft certificated in the amateur-built category. A current medical certificate is required. The race begins at MGY, and then heads to two pylon turns in Illinois; the first at Kankakee Airport (KKK), and the second at Freeport (FEP). For there it's on to the finish line at the Quad Graphics Airport in Lomira, Wisconsin, before re-assembling at Fond du Lac for a group flight to OSH. Whyte expects decent participation at this year's event. "We have a dedicated core group that will participate - people plan for this, plan to attend and participate in this event," he said. "The economy and fuel prices of course will play roles, but AirVenture and the AirVenture Cup seem to always be the last thing to get scratched off the 'can't-do' list." Whyte has been told that people in the City of Sterling Heights, Illinois (near Freeport) are attempting to organize spectators to visit the airport for aircraft fly-bys at the second pylon turn. The Sportsman/Sprint category this year will feature aircraft with VW and Corvair conversions and will be allowed a no-penalty pit stop There are currently no plans for new classes. (See all the categories on the AirVenture Cup Race website.) The registration forms for the 2009 AirVenture Cup Race will be hosted online at www.airventurecup.com. They are expected to be posted soon, so those planning to partake are asked to visit the website frequently in the coming weeks.
