Sorry, not being one of the programmers I have no idea how the preview

Brian, I think they are talking about the preview. If you select preview, it
gives you what looks to be an rtf-type rendering. It is after the preview
that you select "create", so it appears that it is not a pdf file. Perhaps
you could clarify.

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering children when unknown which of the 2 spouses are the parent

2006-08-11 Thread Cathy

Hi Beth,
Using the Child-Parent relationship, is a great idea. You can add
other categories like "Unproven" to the default list.

However, for major lines in my tree, I like to add something to the
name so it's obvious on the Family View that the relationships aren't proven.
If you don't want your addition to the name to print in reports, you
can put it in privacy brackets.

name the wife without given her relationship to the children.

Using Legacy 6.0 & 20 Jan 2006 Build

When I and a number of other users reported this problem several years
ago it was put on the "to be fixed list," but the anomaly is still in
existence. I searched the list archives but did not find anything on the
resolution of this issue.

Whenever I enter information in parentheses at the end of a source detail
statement Legacy inserts a period after the statement and before the
parentheses. For example I enter : Samuel Alden, register number 251
(1889). What I get in the source preview screen and in print is: Samuel
Alden, register number 251.(1889). I don't get the unwanted period if I
use brackets rather than parentheses; however, brackets have an entirely
different connotation in genealogy.

I have many sources similar to the above where there are no page numbers.
The data is set out by register numbers within a one-year period. I
prefer to have the year set off by parentheses for clarity and emphasis.
There are times when I wish to enter other data in parentheses at the end
of the statement as well.

Is there something I should be doing differently to eliminate the
superfluous period (other than a redo of hundreds of source detail
sentences)?

Thanks!

RE: [LegacyUG] Pocket PCs aka PDA

I use Pocket Genealogist Advanced and like
it.   It isn’t as easy to work in as Legacy on a laptop or
desktop simply because of the screen size.   But it’s a good
way to take all of your info with you.  And with two way syncing you can
add info that is synced with Legacy when you return home.  I don’t
use it a lot but am glad to have it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Pocket PCs aka PDA

2006-08-11 Thread KevinRPhillips
Jane,

Correct, ActiveSync must first be installed in order to do a Pocket
Genealogist install. ActiveSync is also involved when it comes to database
synchronization.

You'll want the "Advanced" version of Pocket Genealogist because it will
read Legacy databases directly, plus allow you to make changes on the device
and update the changes directly back into Legacy as well. You never need
to use GEDCOM.

The latest Version of Pocket Genealogist also added GPS support. (Of course
you need a GPS device in order to use it)

RE: [LegacyUG] PDFs and RTFs

2006-08-11 Thread genealogist
Brian, I think they are talking about the preview. If you select preview, it
gives you what looks to be an rtf-type rendering. It is after the preview
that you select "create", so it appears that it is not a pdf file. Perhaps
you could clarify.

Thanks

Judie

2006-08-11 Thread Cary
Pocket Genealogist has its own synchronizing window in which you select
which Legacy file(s) to synchronize. That worked fine for me at a time I
had a (McAfee induced) problem with Activesynch.

Jane,

I have a Palm OS. Maybe someone else in the group who's using Pocket

Pocket Genealogist may answer. I believe he's on the LUG list.

Re: [LegacyUG] PDFs and RTFs

2006-08-11 Thread Susan Daily

Alistair,
I have tried to recreate this, but I don't seem to see what you see.

I go to, for example, Descendant Book Report. On the right, I select
PDF file. Now I click on the icon Create. I type in a filename
("test") and click Save. After two seconds where not much is happening
(except page numbers are counting up underneath the printer image on
the right), the Preview screen pops up and so does a dialog box that
states "The ...test.pdf file has been created. Would you like to view
the PDF file?"

I don't see a temporary RTF anywhere in this process. Is my computer
so fast, that it doesn't show? Do you have an old computer?

1. How far in advance did you put the reminder date?

2. On the Home Tab click the Options Button and select Options from the

What is your reminder date?  From Help "Legacy Home

of.  These reminders are displayed on the day you specify in the to-do item

We seem to have a rather curious situation as regards report printing
from Legacy.

If I print to Legacy pdf, an RTF is first created that looks terrific,
which one glimpses on its way to the pdf; all is formatted correctly -
title page, contents, pictures properly aligned, captions as they
should be. BUT one cannot then of course edit it to get rid of the
'unknowns' and other grammatical glitches, and the PDF is not
compatible with modern standards.

If I print to rtf, intending to print to an Acrobat printer, the RTF
is not at all the same as that created in the above para - most but
not all pictures are left justified, captions read [caption John Doe],
section headings are different etc. Loads of editing needed.

Is there a way to get hold of the RTF created by Legacy on the way to
a PDF? or to get a more modern PDF converter installed?

I do have Acrobat 6 Professional on my computer, but it can only work
with what it's given

Warm regards :-)

Alastair Lack

Can't Adobe Reader version 7 be downloaded free?? I've got it and I've
certainly not paid for it.

Subject: [LegacyUG] PDFs and RTFs

Sounds great -- Will the new videos explain the differences bewtween the
formats and the advantages and disadvantages of them?

I am really excited about the new videos coming out! I have learned so
much from the ones I have and I look forward to learning even more to get
the most out of Legacy.

Nancy

P.S. Will there be a package deal?

Arnold,

The soon-to-be-released training video, "Picturing your Legacy: a Video
Guide to Working with Digital Pictures in Legacy" explains these
situations

in detail. Basically there are 2 rules when digitizing pictures/documents:
1) scan at a higher resolution, which it seems that you are and 2) save as
an archival-type image format. This would include .tif and .bmp. I
wouldn't

suggest .gifs if you're wanting to retail all the image data.

The following training CDs will be available hopefully early next week:

- Picturing your Legacy: a Video Guide to Working with Digital Pictures in
Legacy
- Creating and Sharing Perfect Reports
- Insider's Guide to Legacy: Tips & Tricks

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] PDFs and RTFs

2006-08-11 Thread Alastair Lack

If you look under the big printer icon, you will see various options -
the default being screen (whence the print preview), but also text,
html, rtf and pdf.

That's the origin of the iffy rtf file; however if you select there
pdf, you get a good rtf shown briefly before the pdf conversion is
performed.

I want either to interrupt that pdf creation process to obtain the
good rtf, or to update the pdf creator.

[LegacyUG] To-Do-List

2006-08-11 Thread Renee Zamora

I just added a to-do item to someone in my database and I put a reminder
date on it.  I looked on Legacy home page and it's not showing up.  It
there some kind of problem with the To-Do-Items list on Legacy Home Page.
My last to-do item is dated  11 Jun 2006.  I'm not sure if I
added anyone since then or not.  Suggestions?
